The food was fantastic but the best part if our dining was Sir our waitress,she was an absolute delight. She couldn’t have done much for us.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Rise Restaurant in York, and I can honestly say it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The food was absolutely amazing—every dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. You can tell a lot of care goes into both the preparation and the sourcing of ingredients. The service was equally impressive. The staff were attentive, friendly, and made us feel truly welcomed without being overbearing. It’s clear they take pride in creating a memorable dining experience. Whether you’re visiting York or live locally, The Rise is definitely a spot I’d highly recommend. A perfect combination of great food, lovely ambiance, and top-notch service.

Always a lovely evening dining here and one of my favorite places in York. The food is always perfection and the service is exceptionally friendly and professional. My latest visit would not have been nearly so enjoyable were it not for the efforts of Weronika, Chanel and Rob who bent over backwards to make our evening as smooth as possible.

Mi marido fue regalado cena con vino para 2 y también champán té de la tarde para 2 así que nos registramos en otro hotel y cenamos en The Rise en una noche seguido por el té de la tarde al día siguiente. Tuvimos un G&T muy caro (£ 32. 06 ) en el bar antes de entrar a cenar. Un buen toque fue la tarjeta de felicitación de Feliz Cumpleaños que estaba esperando a mi marido en nuestra mesa. El servidor vino y tomó nuestro pedido, 3 platos con una botella de vino de la casa y el primer plato de queso de cabra para mí y langostinos para él llegó bastante rápido y también lo hizo la botella de vino blanco, pero por desgracia esto no se enfrió, así que tuvo que permanecer en el cubo de hielo hasta que llegó nuestro plato principal. Pedí el tagliatelle con langostinos en una bisquetería de langosta y este estaba delicioso mientras mi esposo tenía un plato de pollo que también disfrutaba. Mientras tanto, el vino todavía no estaba bien refrigerado y el servidor siguió viniendo a tratar de verterlo por nosotros. En realidad, no le preocupaba que la botella hubiera llegado a la mesa sin beber. Los postres fueron pedidos y los dos tuvimos el pegajoso budín de toffee, la presentación fue bonita pero el plato le faltaba sabor. My only complaint is we had afternoon tea with 'Champagne' but I never saw this being poured so could have been anything and the glasses are just horrible cheapest things going which can be to the detriment of a good wine or Champagne. Afternoon tea was excellent including the gluten free one. Would book again but might have to take some decent glasses to match the rest of the afternoon

Really nice room for afternoon tea. Everyone is extremely polite and customer service is top notch. The afternoon tea was lovely. The only thing I would pick up is that you can tell the sandwiches were made a long time before being plated as the bread felt a bit old and dry. But we still had a lovely time.

A beautiful afternoon tea spent with a friend today! The service was attentive throughout and the team couldn’t do enough for us! The food itself was delicious and beautifully presented! We enjoyed unlimited tea/coffee; they even brought us their monthly special tea of Elderflower and lemon. We loved the sample so much that we ordered a teapot of it! We didn’t feel rushed and enjoyed the soothing jazz music in the background! We have been here numerous times in the last few years, and can’t wait to return again!!

Excelente restaurante, parece caro pero la calidad hace que valga la pena. En nuestra estancia de 3 noches en el Grand cenamos una vez, esto fue excepcional en todos los cursos. En particular las Hamburguesas eran excepcionales, mi esposa y yo no podemos recordar haber tomado una hamburguesa tan buena como servía. También se utiliza para el desayuno que es de £ 25 por persona cada uno. Una vez más la calidad era muy fuerte e incluye inglés completo, así como huevos florentine y Benedict. Es un servicio buffet, amplia selección de cereales, cruasanes muesli, etc.

The Rise has a lot going for it—good service, friendly and attentive staff, and a stylish setting. The presentation of the food is impressive, and everything looks well-prepared. However, while the dishes were enjoyable, they could have done with a bit more flavour to really stand out. There is a slight corporate feel to the atmosphere, which makes it lack a bit of character, but overall, it’s a solid choice for a meal in York. Would happily return, but with a few tweaks, it could be even better!

Having pre-booked and made specific birthday requests, we were excited to indulge in what promised to be a luxurious experience. We were particularly charmed by the limited edition Lunar New Year menu, a thoughtful and festive touch. Overall, we enjoyed our afternoon. The ambiance of The Rise is undeniably grand, and the food itself was a treat. As a first-timer, I found the selection of delicate sandwiches, pastries, and scones to be both beautiful and delicious. However, while the experience had many high points, some minor shortcomings prevented it from reaching its full potential. While some staff members were wonderfully attentive and helpful, others seemed less engaged, which slightly dampened the overall atmosphere. For such a prestigious establishment, consistency in service is key. Additionally, while our birthday requests were noted, some of the finer details were unfortunately overlooked. These small oversights, while not detrimental, did detract from the feeling of being truly pampered on such a special day. Despite these minor disappointments, we left The Grand having enjoyed our afternoon tea. The setting is undeniably impressive, the food was good, and the occasion itself was memorable. With a little more attention to detail and a more consistent level of service, The Rise could truly live up to its five-star rating and create an even more exceptional experience for its guests. I would recommend The Grand for a special occasion, but with the caveat that it's worth double-checking all the details of your booking to ensure a truly flawless celebration.

I liked the service and the food. The soup was very good. The Sheperds pie was actually lamb, as is the traditional recipe but I found it a little dry and had to add all the gravy.

We went for our anniversary and was a fantastic dining experience. We were a little early and so had a drink in the 1609 bar down the corridor first. We went for dinner around 6pm, and was welcomed by staff, and a lovely postcard. it was a little quiet at first bit picked up throughout the time we were there. Staff were very nice and helpful, waited on us perfectly. We had the Beef Wellington, which was perfectly cooked and presented. We then had a sticky toffee pudding, which was again perfect. I would suggest that a good dining experience costs around £70 per person, but worth it! We would definitely return for our next celebration.

Having booked Dinner at the Rise for my Mother’s 80th birthday along with a couple of nights in the Grand, WOW. From arriving to being seated the service was exemplary. They had even wrote a birthday card out and left it on the table. Our waitress, Vera was so helpful, attentive and friendly and made our night. The food was amazing and the whole team went out of their way to make the night special. I really can’t recommend this place enough. Thanks to everyone for helping us make special memories.

Festive afternoon tea at The Rise at The Grand was fantastic. The atmosphere is amazing and service superb. Allergies were well catered for and we had a fantastic experience. I would certainly recommend this experience when in York.

We booked in advance for a 30th birthday celebration of Afternoon tea. I forgot to book one vegetarian but they were still able to accommodate. We were served by Alyssa who was very attentive and knowledgeable about the food items served. Food was very tasty, a mix of sweet, savory items. I would say there aren't enough sandwiches, I had one cheese sandwich, the rest was other savory items like a small tart, pasty, and Spanish style bun along with a wrap. I questioned more sandwich's but was told I wouldn't be able to eat them as I'd be full after everything else. They offered me their side menu of chips etc... missing my point entirely.

Amazing food (insane tiramisu), great staff and nice atmosphere.

We were guests at the hotel and enjoyed our final night with dinner at The Rise. We were early diners and the number staff outnumbered the folks dining. Hostess Emma was happy and enthusiastic making feel at home. The wait staff were pleasant and friendly. My wife ordered the Sea Trout while I tried the Shepard Pie both were perfectly prepared and presented…and absolutely delicious! We topped off a superb meal with decaf coffee and dessert. The Milk and Honey dish and the Black Forest Gateau. We highly recommend The Rose for dinner.

We ordered our first beef Wellington at a restaurant, and we were not disappointed. Natasha made great suggestions for sides and provided excellent service. We also got to meet the hostess, Emma, and Rob, the supervisor, who also were wonderful and welcoming. Great team all around and great food!

The staff were really lovely and made you feel very welcome. The lady at the seating desk was a little ray of sunshine. The building was beautiful. The afternoon tea itself however, was a little disappointing. Ive done quite a few and this one was one of the most expensive I've ever done yet it had the least amount of food. We both left hungry and I feel they could have added a couple more sandwiches or pastries to the tray. (Picture below is what is served for 2 people) The scones however were absolutely delicious and so was the clotted cream.

charged me twice more after the afternoon tea, so I paid £100 more than I was supposed to edit: they have responded and issued a refund and have made steps to prevent this from occurring in the future.

We visited for afternoon tea for our wedding anniversary. The staff made it so special from start to finish. The vegetarian menu was lovely and not an afterthought like a lot of places. The food was gorgeous, both meat and veggie. The service was excellent throughout and they even gave us a lovely anniversary card. Thank you for such a lovely experience.

Excellent service from the friendly doorman, to the bubbly hostess and the lovely waitress. The food was delicious, honestly the best garlic bread and cottage pie we have ever had. Nothing was too much trouble. Thankyou all for making it so special.

We had an amazing afternoon tea here. We were a large group (20+) with different dietary needs and accessibility requirements (including a guest in a wheelchair) and everything was handled really well. We were made to feel so welcome and the food was delicious. Many thanks.

We went there specifically for the Grand Beef Wellington and we were not disappointed. The food was great and the value was fair given the quality. It is a somewhat fancy place but it did not feel intimidating. Service was prompt and professional, and the open kitchen provides a good amount of entertainment as we waited for our food.

After eating here for breakfast on our first day in York we decided we must return. The choice and presentation of the food is excellent. We came back later for lunch and, such is the popularity of the place, had to wait around ten minutes for a table.

This is the more informal dining option at the lovely Grand Hotel. My main dish of duck was perfectly cooked and the portion size was just right. This was followed by a delightful and unusual milk & honey dessert, combining several different textures. Presentation is impeccable. The restaurant is bright and relaxed with an upbeat atmosphere. Service is excellent too.

Delicious afternoon tea - the best gluten free afternoon tea I have ever had . Went with a friend and we had individual stands , both thought all the food and drink was exceptional . Extensive tea menu. The concierge was so lovely and professional as he wheeled by bike to store it for me whilst we ate. All the staff were lovely as we arrived and were shown to the restaurant. The staff waiting on could be a little more attentive and look out for signs that guests require attention, bit of a wait for tea replenishment etc …..so I have given four stars only because of that . Food exceptional

One of the best afternoon teas with fizz we've had! My daughter treated me to AT at the Grand for Mother's Day and it didn't disappoint ! Each little savoury/sandwich was amazing tasting not one we didn't like.The best small scones which where warm and light (hate it when you get served big chunky scones on AT) two fruit, 2 plain with fresh jam and clotted cream in dishes not served up in a cloda commercial package pot like one we had last year. Well as for the patisseries, wow amazing and Big compliments to the chef. Our waitress Lola was lovely and attentive but not too much. All the staff we met couldn't be friendlier enough. We have been to many AT's including London and this one was up there with the best.

Under average so surprised to read it was awarded best tea in York, staff admitted afternoon tea sandwiches were prepared at 6am so bread already hard. Scones and pastries were ok.

The first two courses were excellent but the ginger banoffee desert had no taste of ginger at all and was pretty bland. The wine list was very limited with little choice when it came to price or quality. One of us had a limoncello at the end of the meal and was shocked to find it on the bill as £13 for a small shot glass - a total rip off. It is things like this that make you leave the restaurant feeling you have been taken for a ride. Given the range of restaurants in York I doubt we will return. A real shame.

Lovely visit again to the Grand for a gin afternoon tea. The food was good (generous with the clotted cream), drinks excellent and service wonderful. We were able to stay and relax for the whole afternoon (we brought cross-stitch) Thanks a lot!

Took my mum for afternoon tea on Mothering Sunday. The service was excellent. The staff were so lovey, very attentive. There was even a nice personalised card for my mum waiting on the table. The food was simply perfect. Beautifully presented and tasted unbelievably. The range of teas was impressive. Not since my afternoon tea at Fortnum’s have I had such a selection. I would highly recommend the gunpowder green tea. Smoky and refreshing.

The hotel looks amazing. Afternoon tea looked amazing but the sandwiches were far too 'fancy'. Would have prefered ham, cheese or chicken. Love cauliflower but not in a sandwich; don't like beetroot cream and apple in a sandwich either. Disappointing that the 'sausage' roll was made with black pudding and not sausage.

My wife and I came to York for a short break and are staying at the Grand. We visited last year and were impressed with the food. Tonight, Valentines Day, we again booked to eat at The Rise. The food was exceptional. We had the whipped goats cheese nibble to wet our appetite. Superb. Followed by the smoked salmon starter, again superb. I then went for stonebass and my wife had the burger. Both were brilliant. Of course we also squeezed in some deserts… and coffee. Faultless. Our waitresses were attentive, and knowledgable, answering any of our questions. All in all, a lovely evening. We will come back to York, just to eat here again. Well done.

We were really excited for dinner at the Rise and the food didn't disappoint, the scallops and pork belly is an amazing starter with fantastic flavours and textures, The steaks were well cooked and seasoned beautifully but unfortunately the service let the entire experience down, all of the waiting team seemed quite disinterested in serving and like they didn't really want to be there, we sat with dirty plates until just before our mains came and then again until we asked for the bill. Although the restaurant was quiet and 4 staff were on the front of house we struggled to get a member of staff or anything from ordering our drinks to asking for the bill. We had couples sitting on tables on either side of us and both of them made similar comments regarding the front of house staff. It was a real shame because the food was genuinely fantastic and the restaurant is beautifully decorated.

We were able to enjoy some drinks from the 1906 bar prior to dining and what a great selection, we were then seated and what a great selection of food to choose from! The staff were generally attentive although for what seemed like a relatively quiet Friday night, the bar did seem quite slow to serve drinks. The starters were nice and my only criticism 2as that the cinnamon waffle seemed to have been sat for a while on the side. All three mains ordered were stunning and the desert and desert cocktail went down a treat. Would definitely recommend.

Hostess was super polite I was able to find a spot without reservation thankfully waiter was attentive Filet was very tender but didn’t have much flavor too it was kind of bland and was well over cooked asked for medium mashed potatoes weren’t all that great either but the roasted potatoes were

Excellent. We had a birthday dinner here and the food was exceptional! Couldn’t fault it. We had the parfait; scallops and belly pork and beef Wellington. Portion size on the Wellington is huge. Definitely worth a visit.

They have the best breakfast 🥞 in York . Another thing they have the best dessert 🍨 in York too . Also the restaurant has lovely atmosphere. Lastly, the people who work here are very nice .

Lovely for a special occasion which it was for us

Was very disappointed with this restaurant, we was staying in the hotel so had high hopes as breakfast was lovely. Our server was a young lad who had no idea, your paying for five star service but never got it. He missed one of the starters off the order, he poured our wine to the very top of the glass from a great height spilling it every where. We ordered a cocktail which didn’t arrive, so I asked him where it was he went to the bar where it was sitting on the bar waiting to be collected, the ice had already started melting! And they had the cheek to put £47.00 service charge on the bill. Our table was at 7.45 I wanted roast potatoes but they had none left. All in all a very disappointed evening.

We went out as a couple. Atmosphere was good. Nice to see the kitchen prep from the table. I had a starter of belly pork and scallops. Very good but far too much of the bitter passionfruit jam/reduction. We both had ribeye steaks rare which were very well cooked. They were both far too seasoned. The French fries were also far too salty as was the peppercorn sauce. All together it was unpleasant. Even without alcohol I woke in the night with salt thirst. The steaks also came with a nduja aioli which was a complete mismatch to the veg and peppercorn sauce.

We had the excellent festive afternoon tea. Our waiter was attentive, friendly & made time to chat, making us feel welcome. The food was well presented, tasty & abundant. We will definitely return & would recommend The Rise to anyone visiting York.

We had planned to visit for some time and are so pleased we did. What an amazing venue and after great service in the bar and a couple of cocktails we headed through to the Rise. The staff here are superb and provide great and friendly service with personality thrown in. After a warm and welcoming greeting we were looked after by Chanel who was excellent and attentive. Food wise we were pleasantly surprised and realised why they had just won an award. It was interesting and truly delicious. We ended up having 3 course and that is very rare. The atmosphere is lovely and while they seemed pretty busy there were ample staff present. Its definitely somewhere we'd recommend to others for an occasion meal and hope to return soon.

My wife and I visited the Rise restaurant in the Grand for afternoon tea. It is an excellent place for traditional English afternoon tea. Beautiful food in opulent surroundings. Excellent service from immaculately presented staff. If you're visiting York, it's well worth a visit.

We got married this week in York and my parents bought us an evening meal voucher for The Rise Restaurant. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and very welcoming and attentive staff, the menu was quite varied, and to be honest, we expected quite small portions being 5 stars, so we opted for 3 courses, how wrong can you be! From nibbles to starters right through to mains, the dishes were well presented, utterly delicious, and plentiful. Well done all, I can't wait to come back and try something else off the menu!

A lovely buffet breakfast is offered and separate egg menu items like Eggs Benedict can be ordered from the kitchen. Very nice selection and very fresh products all served by friendly staff.

I am only reviewing the breakfast portion of the restaurant. Overall, they offer a great breakfast selection of buffet and ordered food. The buffet is well placed with hot, cold, and breads. It offers a nice selection of coffees and teas.

Visited as part of a business lunch. Really great surroundings, pleasant and helpful staff, food nicely presented (though average and in small quantities). The real fly in the ointment was the drinks prices: £16 for a glass of Malbec and a colleague was stung for nearly £14 for what was effectively a soft-drink (no alcohol G&T). I think I'll be dining elsewhere in future...

Honestly one of the best experiences I’ve had. Service was attentive but not pushy, the atmosphere was welcoming and relaxing but not overwhelming, and the food was absolutely incredible. Even the simple things like the bread and butter was so elevated and so beautiful, and the mains were perfection. One of the best carbonaras I’ve ever had, and my partner had one of the best steaks he’s had. Everything about it was stunning, and the pricing felt incredibly accurate. Normally at the end of a meal, we walk out feeling a little deflated after enjoying ourselves and having to pay such high amounts, however here we were more than happy to pay and even put an extra tip on top of the service charge, and left feeling so elevated. I can’t find a single fault in our experience last night. Thank you to all the staff, you made such a pleasant experience.

The Rise Restaurant is located at the Grand Hotel York. They also have another restaurant which offers a tasting menu, this one is more casual offering à la carte menu. There was plenty of options. Ordered the asparagus salad and the chicken liver parfait for starter. Unfortunately the egg white of the poached egg on the salad was undercooked and had to be returned to be cooked more. The staff was very professional and apologised a few times, so that was good. The chicken liver parfait was very nice. For mains we had the pork belly with a side of truffle mash, and the vegetarian burger. All very tasty, the pork belly had a perfect crispy crackling on top. The vegetarian burger had a falafel patty and fries and salad on the side. Very tasty. The desserts were delicious as well, especially the milk and honey one. There is plenty of drinks options. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, offering drinks and anything else we might need. Overall very nice experience, maybe a little overpriced for the food you get.
