We were guests at the hotel and enjoyed our final night with dinner at The Rise. We were early diners and the number staff outnumbered the folks dining. Hostess Emma was happy and enthusiastic making feel at home. The wait staff were pleasant and friendly. My wife ordered the Sea Trout while I tried the Shepard Pie both were perfectly prepared and presented…and absolutely delicious! We topped off a superb meal with decaf coffee and dessert. The Milk and Honey dish and the Black Forest Gateau. We highly recommend The Rose for dinner.

The staff were really lovely and made you feel very welcome. The lady at the seating desk was a little ray of sunshine. The building was beautiful. The afternoon tea itself however, was a little disappointing. Ive done quite a few and this one was one of the most expensive I've ever done yet it had the least amount of food. We both left hungry and I feel they could have added a couple more sandwiches or pastries to the tray. (Picture below is what is served for 2 people) The scones however were absolutely delicious and so was the clotted cream.

We went there specifically for the Grand Beef Wellington and we were not disappointed. The food was great and the value was fair given the quality. It is a somewhat fancy place but it did not feel intimidating. Service was prompt and professional, and the open kitchen provides a good amount of entertainment as we waited for our food.

This is the more informal dining option at the lovely Grand Hotel. My main dish of duck was perfectly cooked and the portion size was just right. Delicious afternoon tea - the best gluten free afternoon tea I have ever had . Went with a friend and we had individual stands , both thought all the food and drink was exceptional . Extensive tea menu. The concierge was so lovely and professional as he wheeled by bike to store it for me whilst we ate. All the staff were lovely as we arrived and were shown to the restaurant. The staff waiting on could be a little more attentive and look out for signs that guests require attention, bit of a wait for tea replenishment etc …..so I have given four stars only because of that . Food exceptional

One of the best afternoon teas with fizz we've had! My daughter treated me to AT at the Grand for Mother's Day and it didn't disappoint ! Each little savoury/sandwich was amazing tasting not one we didn't like. The best small scones which where warm and light (hate it when you get served big chunky scones on AT) two fruit, 2 plain with fresh jam and clotted cream in dishes not served up in a cloda commercial package pot like one we had last year. Well as for the patisseries, wow amazing and Big compliments to the chef. Our waitress Lola was lovely and attentive but not too much. All the staff we met couldn't be friendlier enough. We have been to many AT's including London and this one was up there with the best.

The first two courses were excellent but the ginger banoffee desert had no taste of ginger at all and was pretty bland. The wine list was very limited with little choice when it came to price or quality. One of us had a limoncello at the end of the meal and was shocked to find it on the bill as £13 for a small shot glass - a total rip off. It is things like this that make you leave the restaurant feeling you have been taken for a ride. Given the range of restaurants in York I doubt we will return. A real shame.

The hotel looks amazing. Afternoon tea looked amazing but the sandwiches were far too 'fancy'. Would have prefered ham, cheese or chicken. My wife and I came to York for a short break and are staying at the Grand. We visited last year and were impressed with the food. Tonight, Valentines Day, we again booked to eat at The Rise. The food was exceptional. We had the whipped goats cheese nibble to wet our appetite. Superb. Followed by the smoked salmon starter, again superb. I then went for stonebass and my wife had the burger. Both were brilliant. Of course we also squeezed in some deserts… and coffee. Faultless. Our waitresses were attentive, and knowledgable, answering any of our questions. All in all, a lovely evening. We will come back to York, just to eat here again. Well done.

We were able to enjoy some drinks from the 1906 bar prior to dining and what a great selection, we were then seated and what a great selection of food to choose from! The staff were generally attentive although for what seemed like a relatively quiet Friday night, the bar did seem quite slow to serve drinks. The starters were nice and my only criticism 2as that the cinnamon waffle seemed to have been sat for a while on the side. All three mains ordered were stunning and the desert and desert cocktail went down a treat. Would definitely recommend.

We were really excited for dinner at the Rise and the food didn't disappoint, the scallops and pork belly is an amazing starter with fantastic flavours and textures, The steaks were well cooked and seasoned beautifully but unfortunately the service let the entire experience down, all of the waiting team seemed quite disinterested in serving and like they didn't really want to be there, we sat with dirty plates until just before our mains came and then again until we asked for the bill. Although the restaurant was quiet and 4 staff were on the front of house we struggled to get a member of staff or anything from ordering our drinks to asking for the bill. We had couples sitting on tables on either side of us and both of them made similar comments regarding the front of house staff. It was a real shame because the food was genuinely fantastic and the restaurant is beautifully decorated.

We went out as a couple. Atmosphere was good. Nice to see the kitchen prep from the table. I had a starter of belly pork and scallops. Very good but far too much of the bitter passionfruit jam/reduction. We both had ribeye steaks rare which were very well cooked. They were both far too seasoned. The French fries were also far too salty as was the peppercorn sauce. All together it was unpleasant. Even without alcohol I woke in the night with salt thirst. The steaks also came with a nduja aioli which was a complete mismatch to the veg and peppercorn sauce.

Was very disappointed with this restaurant, we was staying in the hotel so had high hopes as breakfast was lovely. Our server was a young lad who had no idea, your paying for five star service but never got it. He missed one of the starters off the order, he poured our wine to the very top of the glass from a great height spilling it every where. We ordered a cocktail which didn’t arrive, so I asked him where it was he went to the bar where it was sitting on the bar waiting to be collected, the ice had already started melting! And they had the cheek to put £47.00 service charge on the bill. Our table was at 7.45 I wanted roast potatoes but they had none left. All in all a very disappointed evening.

Honestly one of the best experiences I’ve had. Service was attentive but not pushy, the atmosphere was welcoming and relaxing but not overwhelming, and the food was absolutely incredible. Even the simple things like the bread and butter was so elevated and so beautiful, and the mains were perfection. One of the best carbonaras I’ve ever had, and my partner had one of the best steaks he’s had. Everything about it was stunning, and the pricing felt incredibly accurate. Normally at the end of a meal, we walk out feeling a little deflated after enjoying ourselves and having to pay such high amounts, however here we were more than happy to pay and even put an extra tip on top of the service charge, and left feeling so elevated. Ordered the asparagus salad and the chicken liver parfait for starter. Unfortunately the egg white of the poached egg on the salad was undercooked and had to be returned to be cooked more. The staff was very professional and apologised a few times, so that was good. The chicken liver parfait was very nice. For mains we had the pork belly with a side of truffle mash, and the vegetarian burger. All very tasty, the pork belly had a perfect crispy crackling on top. This experience was very surprising in itself! The floor was half empty and they were aware of the time crunch but still took their time, so was not the most ideal of places to be but we were able to book a few hours beforehand. The only reason why I gave them 2 starts and not 1 was due to the food tasting decent (aside from the lack of filling, and the macroons being undercooked). Hopefully when they see this review, they'll take the feedback onboard.

From starters to main to dessert, all the food was cooked to perfection, and all the dishes we ordered were had lovely presentation. Ned looked after us really well. We will definitely go again the next time we visit York. 100 percent 5 star!

Afternoon tea was good, but the service was pretty poor after a promising start.

A wonderful meal— very welcoming atmosphere and each dish we ordered was excellent and crafted with care. Of note was the Milk and Honey dessert: none of us had ever tasted anything like it before so it was a special revelation.

I've been to Rise twice and have loved it both times. The food is top class and so tasty. We did need to queue for a short time but it's worth it. The place is constantly full as it's so impressive. I'd recommend the Turkish Eggs. Great service too.

I had seen some mixed reviews before coming, which made me slightly apprehensive. However, I have to say I was impressed. The service was attentive and friendly, the food plentiful and tasty, and the restaurant has a warm, inviting atmosphere with a nice ambience. I enjoyed watching the chefs work in the open kitchen, and they took great care over the food. Being in a 5* hotel it is towards the upper price point, however given the quality of the food and service I was a happy customer. I would recommend a visit.

Very slow service on drinks from bar, very fast service on pre-made afternoon tea. Food was good, but savouries went too fast, didn’t really stretch to two people, so as with Betty’s, The Ritz, Fortnums or anywhere selling afternoon tea, we asked for a sandwich refresh. Embarrassed waitress muttered about going to find out but then ignored subject for the rest of the afternoon. Poor training and lack of supervision and management evident for £250 for 4 people. To be picky, but honest, first drink spilt on table by waitress, who focused on replacing it rather than cleaning up which we did. Drinks never arrived together always 10 minutes apart in batches. Asked for a Champagne Cocktail, which is a recognised drink, but got a cocktail made with champagne. Rainy day, large restaurant filled up in the end and one free standing coat rack (December) was teetering and very difficult to find your coat four layers down without taking everyone else’s off. Five star experience? Adjourned to the main bar of five star hotel with 40 minutes to go before taxi, yet waited over 20 minutes for drink to arrive, very slow, understaffed and not five star at all. General lack of supervision and oversight, does not warrant five star claim or prices without attention to detail on everything.

During our stay at The Grand, York, we enjoyed an exceptional dinner at The Rise Restaurant. It boasts stylish and modern decor, with the ability to see into the kitchen and watch your food being prepared. This is a lovely addition to the dining experience. The food was delicious, highly priced but definitely worth it. The waiters can’t do enough for you and are so welcoming, the wait times are short, the utensils and other table decor is impeccably clean and it has a great atmosphere to it. We will absolutely be returning and encourage others to do the same.

What a waste of time and money! At £70 per head for a three course meal in a nice setting we certainly expected more. The food was mediocre at best. 45 minutes between courses is too long and to cap it off 40mins waiting to be able to get the bill pay and leave is taking the p*ss! The staff apologised but turned and laughed to each other immediately after.. oh and the £100 voucher we had taken from us on entry had been misplaced. The restaurant is a walk through for the people at the bar across the hall so they can smoke on the balcony. What was the £15 service charge for? We didn’t have any water etc and we’re not in Italy? The parking is at the NCP multi-storey across the road so you get to navigate the swarm of drunks on the way out and pay your £11 for 3 hours. Nice little finisher to the wasted night.

I took my husband here as a birthday treat and he loved it. The food was incredible and the service was fantastic. The staff couldn’t do enough. We were given breads with oil and special butter to nibble before the starters arrived. I ordered the scotch egg. At the end of the main course we were both stuffed but we forced ourselves to split a dessert because it was too good of an experience to not. We ordered a dessert called something like “milk and honey” and it was brilliant. 10/10. Would definitely recommend this for someone wanting a fine dining experience. We cannot wait to go back.

Best Brunch Evah! We sat down straight away at the bar I had poached egg and avo on toast (poached eggs were just perfect, not too runny) and the avo was nicely seasoned. Husband had the Wild mushrooms, which were so delicious I had to insist we shared plates. We both had lattes - really really good coffee. Tissy served us and was really helpful and chatty. It's the second time we've been, and we'll be back!

Coming with high expectations set by my fellow reviewers we where rather disappointed. Not so much of the kitchen - it is what you would expect from a restaurant, yet by the service. Likely not enough trained, the management should more care about skills and experience of its staff. Standards like opening/tasting a bottle of wine should be known. I had to return my espresso 2 out of 3 times because it was cold. It simply stood at the bar for just to long not being served. Organisation mattes - and this is what management is responsible for.

Food was 10/10. Barman service was a 10/10. He checked on me & my wife to ensure we were enjoying our meals. Always a nice touch in restaurants. Barman was also very happy to substitute items in our meal. Chef was very skilled in cooking - food was extremely delicious & lovely presentation on the plate. Seating area was well laid out & comfy seats. Noticed there was also a pool table in a seperate large area right next to the bar, far enough away from those dining which is perfect. Very good value for money as well. Paid £45 including tip for 2 meals & 2 drinks, one of which meals was a Sirloin steak. So very good price. Only disappointment was the gents toilets. I’m sure the light in the cubicle was not working. Other than that minor inconvenience. Great restaurant, and would definitely return when in the area.

The food was very sub par. Waitress needs to get another job as she either was having a bad day or hates her job.

Until you stop adding service charges to bills then you will only get one star. This isn’t America. We pay the menu price and a tip is optional. Service charges are just ridiculous and a cheap way to inflate the bill. The food was mediocre anyway so am not planning on returning.

Lovely place with plenty of room between tables. The menu is great and the food does not disappoint. The pheasant was beautiful and the portions are generous. The staff are attentive and they allow dogs. Well worth a visit. The owners are fairly new and I wish them good luck - they deserve it!

Very busy when we were there. Plenty of seats inside, out the front and back. A lovely traditional pub
