Excellent roast dinner. Really good quality and plenty of it. Great service and really lovely warm and inviting atmosphere. They also accept dogs. It was great to find somewhere so good where we can bring our little dog too. Will definitely return.

The hotel says that visitors will find a warm welcome and that is exactly what we recieved. The room was clean, comfortable with a lovely en-suite and coffee/tea making facilities. But the real pleasure was the excellent quality of the food in very comfortable surroundings. A very wide and interesting choice well presented and tasting delicious and they also have little and unexpected extras which makes the whole experience very special. Breakfast included plenty of choice and good quality ingredients, my full English was one of tge best I have had. I recommend this hotel to anyone, you won't be disappointed.

Do not be put off by the title "Ale House": this is an excellent restaurant (but also a great bar). We were there for Sunday lunch; one of us had a traditional Sunday roast, and one a vegetarian choice from the main menu and both were stunning. The menu was very imaginative, everything having a slight twist, extremely well cooked and delivered hot on warmed plates. Portions were on the large side but not huge: we both ate everything on the plate and had a pudding as well. Unlike many places the puddings were also really good, not just of-the-shelf stuff. The atmosphere in Palmers was really good: clean, tidy and stylish, and the staff were friendly and very helpful. They took care to ensure that we had the table we needed and all was done in a timely manner with a smile. All I need now is an excuse to come again. If you're passing on the A17 it is worth a detour through Long Sutton to visit Palmers - and it's quite a nice little town to visit anyway!

From the lack of white wine ie no choice to the slow drinks service we were very disappointed with overall experience. The food was sub standard. Presentation of quarter cabbage on the vegetarian dish was unappealing and inedible. Overcooked fish. Undercooked stuffed pepper. Struggling to find positive feedback about the food but the only redeeming feature was the friendliness of the staff. Would Not recommend and will not be going back.

The hotel room was very spacious. It was clean, fluffy towels, comfortable bed, hairdryer, tea and coffee and en suite. Unfortunately the blind was pointless and definitely needed darker curtains. The stairs up to the rooms could have been friendlier. The food in the pub was good as was the breakfast. All staff were extremely friendly and would do anything to help. A very nice village to look around too.

Having enjoyed this place pre covid ,we were pleased that they could seat us at short notice for Sunday lunch. Oh dear. Place was empty which surprised us. Anyway the girls were excellent and we decided to stay for Sunday lunch. I chose the roast beef(£17)As I do not like rare meat I asked for it to be cooked so that there was no pink,or blood. When it arrived it was not rare but was not a good piece of beef.It was sliced with the grain and was almost Impossible to cut on the plate. My mistake...should have sent it back but soldered on until could not manage any more. When the waitress cleared the plate I told her of my disappointment and she went to tell the chef. She came back saying they would reduce the bill by £5 which I felt was a bit insulting. The chef then came out and was quite aggressive telling me that I had asked for the well done beef so that was my fault. She then stomped of back to her kitchen. Never again to this place(good luck to the waitresses )

We stayed for two nights in a lovely spotlessly clean room with a Kings size bed. Full English breakfast was very good. But the chef excelled with the evening meals. Superb food and large sized portions which were reasonably priced for the high quality. Good selection of Ale's and Cider's. Staff were chatty and friendly. We will definitely stay again.

Having pre-booked a table of eight for mother’s day, we arrived only to be told that they had been caught out by the sheer number of people, which was causing a few delays. Odd really, seeing as they took the bookings in the first place. Having felt like vultures waiting around for other people to leave the table, we were eventually seated some 30 minutes late. Things could only get better right? Wrong. The starters took about 45 minutes to arrive, followed by a long wait for the main course. When it arrived, the food was disappointing. The lamb was extremely fatty, and if you were unfortunate enough to have ordered the chicken, the three rather dry strips provided were just about sufficient to feed a large hamster. The roast potatoes were dry and barely recognisable as a roastie. The broccoli was just weird, not overcooked or undercooked, just so chewy that it was even hard to cut with a knife. The mashed potato was…well let’s just say that at least it wasn’t chewy. Having complained after the main course, they did offer to knock a few pounds off the bill, which was appreciated. Against our better judgement, we decided to try the sweet (perhaps an opportune time for redemption for them?). Nope, another long wait before we even saw a sweet menu. A Mother’s Day to forget I’m afraid, suffice to say we will not be going back to Palmers.

Went as a family of 6 for Mothering Sunday booked at 1.30 pm,waited over one and a half hours for menu to be brought to table. Food arrived 3/4 hour after that. Kids were so hungry that the oldest was given a packet of crisps free of charge and we were offered and accepted a free round of drinks for the wait. When food did arrive meat was chewy (beef) brocolli was hard and bitter, gravy P*ss thin and roast potatoes chewy. Desserts were okay. Defo not worth the £26.00 per head for two courses.

We stopped at Palmers for lunch following a visit to the local market on a Friday. The service was amazing, the young lady who looked after us was very friendly and smiley, took orders promptly and answered any questions we had. There’s a great selection of games available to play whilst you are there and we grabbed a rummikub game to enjoy whilst we waited for our food. Three of us dined and ordered egg and chips, BLT sandwich and a chicken and bacon wrap with a side of sweet potato fries. The food was tasty, brought out in a timely manner. Two diners followed their main with a dessert, which was a homemade berries and crumble - delicious. And two diners had drinks, larger shandy and a lemonade. The only down fall was the cost, for all the above it was nearly £60! We would go back, but probably only for special occasions.

Nice pub with a good section of drinks. We stopped for lunch on our wedding anniversary as we had been here previously and enjoyed it. I do wonder if it has changed management/ownership since our last visit though. Our starters were lovely. Potato & Chorizo fritters and the Bodicea Gin Cured Salmon. We both had the palmers burger to follow and this is where things went very downhill. The burgers were so small and shrunken that they only filled the middle of the bun. It was missing the cheese too and when we mentioned this we were bought a plate of cheese to add ourselves. Hardly the same! Very disappointing service. Yes, we should have complained at the time but as it was our anniversary, we didn't want to ruin our day out and just decided that we wouldn't return.

Picked Palmers Ale House as a half way point to meet friends for lunch. The young waitress who greeted us was bubbly and welcoming and remained so throughout our lunch. The menu was extensive and varied but as the day was foggy and temperature below zero our group all decided on comforting staples; burgers, fish and chips and halloumi burger. We were all more than satisfied with the quality of the food though for us the portions were too large which led to us not eating all that was on the plate and we hate waste. Maybe portions could be scaled back a little. Two of our party had desserts which they reported as being very good. Would definitely recommend and will return.

Visited palmers today for Sunday lunch, we were greeted by very smart and welcoming staff and shown to our table, menus were provided and we ordered leg of lamb with the accompanying veg and Yorkshire, there was a short wait as the veg are freshly cooked, on arrival perfectly presented with lashings of meat, the food was superb and plates and veg dishes completely cleared, we were feeling rather full but could not resist the strawberry cheesecake which on arrival was a huge portion and superb, overall palmers proved . to be five star, we have visited many times over the past ten years and it is back to its best ever. the landlady Tennant introduced herself and I am sure she will continue the same high standard.

We were fortunate enough when we phoned to book a table that they had a cancellation for the exact time we wanted. This set the tone for what was to come. We were told when we arrived that it was a new menu and all it looked yum. COVID rules and regulations were in place and the room was buzzing. Decor and ambience were great and the service was excellent. Order taken promptly and drinks arrived. Starter came and I totally recommend the confit duck. My sister had the smoked mackerel bon Bon’s and requested them without the horse radish. Nothing was too much trouble and we all enjoyed the starters. My brother in law had the Camembert which was lush. We were totally chilled and waited for own mains. This was the only thing I guess you could say if it bothers you could let it down. Mains were ages arriving but we were kept informed the whole time by friendly very hard working girls. The kitchen seemed to be struggling with getting to grips with the new menu and the amount of people waiting for their dinner but I’m sure this is not the norm and things will run smoothly moving forward. As I say we were having such a good time we weren’t bothered but if you were in a hurry or really hungry you might be bothered by it. The mains when they arrived were totally worth waiting for. I had the fish and chips. The others had the seared tuna steak and rump steak. All was hot fresh really flavoursome and cooked to perfection. Whilst we were there the manger had to deal with an obnoxious customer but in no way did she let it affect the service or the atmosphere. We would definitely and will return.

Another lovely meal at Palmers this time for their carvery, which we’ve had before but the quality is always so consistently good they need to be highly praised. Apart from the superb happy and helpful staff, and the very obvious quality of the produce, the choice of the perfectly cooked veg are really worthy of praise. Also the fact that they are still booked up for early weekday meals, without the draw of the ‘eat out to help out’ incentive, is in itself testament to the quality of this first class eatery. My advice, would be book in advance or you may be disappointed.

Booked Sunday lunch on a recommendation for 5 people.Unfortunately the chef seems to get carried away with over cooking Yorkshire puddings! Two trays came out inedible and burnt and I said to the owner who was filling up the tray “not more burnt ones”?It obviously didn’t register with her or she would have sorted kitchen out and tell them to stop sending out burnt inedible Yorkshire puddings!I even told waitress ,they were disgusting and unbelievably burnt ,one tray after the other .Obviously the chef has not a clue of what a Yorkshire puddings texture colour or consistency should be like. The Roulade portion was ridiculous ( so small) also the choice of desserts very limited ,try a good treacle pudding and custard or good apple pie would be nice.Something more substantial rather than creamy desserts.I won’t be returning as if your chef can’t do a basic what is he like with something more complex?

Firstly have to say that the 2 waitresses working today were wonderful. It’s not their fault that they were the only people working and the kitchen was understaffed, presumably due to ill health as nobody would plan that chaos. Table booked for 1pm, took 15mins to be given menus and asked for drinks, a further hour to get our starters and finally our main courses after 3pm. Unfortunately after all that wait 2 of our party were given burnt, dried out fish and the plates went back, so 2 of us ate whilst 2 of us watched. Such a shame as it came recommended by a friend and we were expecting good things.

Myself and my wife decided to travel up from biggleswade and treat her father to a suprise sunday lunch as he has recently recovered from a period of hospitalisation. Living in long sutton for the majority of his life he has always remained loyal to the local industries and local restaurants, so we duly booked into Palmers (massive mistake) from the time of arrival til departure, nothing I observed or tasted would lure me back. The apparent chef and three other staff members where to interested in gossiping and using their mobile phones or sitting down in the restaurant in full view of the customers eating their meals. The carvery itself tasted disgusting, beef rare and tough, gammon massively over salted, vegetables either over cooked or like the parsnips and carrots almost raw, rock hard and inedible, gravey strangely lumpy and cheese sauce split, greasy and strange in colour. Yorkshire puddings resembled biscuits and everything remained on servery throughout service and just covered in aluminium foil. Oh and the staff unsure how to make two americano coffees! Had it not been for causing embaressment to my father in law I would have refused payment but didnt feel confrontation would have resolved an apparent issue that was clearly excepted by others although aside from us 4 dining and a couple drinking at the bar this should have been an indication of what we where about to receive. I have heard of warming plates but expecting a pensioner to hold a scalding hot plate is of the scale. Never before have I observed a chef wearing yellow marigold gloves whilst ferrying food stuffs from the kitchen. Health and Safety eat your hearts out, normal diners leave well alone

We stayed at Palmers a couple of years ago whilst visiting family in the area and were happy with our stay so didn’t hesitate to book again for a 2 night stayOn arrival we were told that they couldn’t take any cards for some reason, cash only so my husband had to go and find a cash point to pay for the 2 nights up front. We then asked to book a table for supper but were told they weren’t doing food that weekend due to a problem with the electrics but that they would provide a continental breakfast in the morning. I understand that these things happen and are often beyond control of the owners/management but a phone call to alert us of these issues would have been appreciated. We decided that we would only stay 1 night instead of 2 and let the manageress know this a little later in the evening. She said that was fine and she would refund us for 1 night before we left in the morning. Just after 9am on the Saturday we went down to the bar for our continental breakfast only to be told that breakfast finished at 8.30 and the chef would not do anything more. (We did at least get a coffee but had to ask for it) No times for breakfast had been mentioned the night before so we were really not impressed, even less so when the couple at the table next to us were then served with toast etc. We had obviously upset the management! All in all, a very unprofessional outfit. We certainly will not be returning and would not recommend Palmers as a place to stay

A friend booked to go to here, so thought I would give it one more chance after a terrible birthday meal last year. I didn't think it could get any worse, but it has. Shocking service, the rudest manageress ever, and there doesn't seem to be an actual chef! If you want oven chips from the shop, you might as well nip across to the Co-op and go home and cook them yourself. If I could give it a zero rating, I would. We left and went to the Ship down the road instead.

Nightmare dont go change managment gone very rapidly down hill ..We booked a room and a meal We arrived at 5pm only to be told that the Kitchen was closed no cooking no warning...and to go else were for food. So we set out on a wet cold Saturday night looking for a meal. We found one ,,on returing to the Plams our room was via the fire escape and the music was so loud in the bar you could not sleep or hear the TV in the room this went on till 1am were told it was 4:30am the night before... the room was very dark with no main light and the 5 lights in the bathroom only 2 worked... the room had a old shower screen stored in it... not very nice the ...bed was very worn and the mattress collapsed so you were on the bed base.... painful. All in all it was a Very Grim Experience for just under £100. Will we go again..... you dont need to ask ...do you..

I booked a table on 8 January for 4 people on 26 January 2019, leaving a contact number. It was explained to me that the menu would have changed by then and it would be more ‘pub food’ but they took my booking and said we would still have a lovely meal. Turned up today for our booking to be told there was no food as the chef was sick. No one had rang to cancel the booking and let us know we wouldn’t be able to eat there. When we went round the corner to the Graineries to try to eat there instead they said Palmers hadn’t been serving food for some time. We couldn’t get in anywhere else and had to drive back to Kings Lynn to eat. Our friends had driven from Newark. Really unimpressed that Palmers didn’t let us know they couldn’t honour our booking.

Visited many times before and the atmosphere and food have always been brilliant. Decided to go for a special occasion on a Friday evening, had looked at the menu on the website and was really looking forward to a tasty meal. Arrived at 7:30 and barely anyone in there, didn’t feel overly welcome and they said we hadn’t booked, which we had. Sat down to be given a chalk board menu which only contained omlette, baguettes, salads or jacket potatoes, not what I was expecting considering I had checked the menu. When we asked the waitress she said it was pub grub, I don’t mind pub grub but there wasn’t even fish and chips or a burger on the menu. We didn’t finish our drinks and left. I think they should let you know if there is a limited menu when you book. The menu looks great for lunchtime but not what you expect for a Friday evening or a special occasion.

Called in last night hoping to eat and managed to get a table. Lovely atmosphere with jazz music playing in background. Waitress showed us their new Christmas menu and the options available and the specials for the night. We opted for two courses, duck pate for starter and braised blade of beef for mains.

We booked Palmer's as we've been many times before and the service and staff had always been outstanding and very attentive and the food was always amazing. However since changing management it has unfortunately gone massively downhill, to the point of which we will not be returning again. We went on a Sunday evening not realising the only food option was a carvery (when booking they didn't make this known). The food had obviously been left out all day as the potatoes and veg were soggy and the meat was going dry. We went back to our table to find it was wet and sticky and we had to get our own cutlery. Upon finishing our meal, we witnessed many staff and the manageress walk past us, not one offered to take our plates away, even after having been sat with empty plates for half an hour, but instead went outside for a cigarette or were stood drinking and socialising. We decided we'd had enough waiting, so we didn't ask about deserts, paid the bill and left. This is an extreme disappointment to what was a very popular restaurant.

Booked a table for a family meal. We tried to order rose wine and was told that they’d run out the night before! We were handed a handwritten menu on an A4 piece of paper which was not even laminated. Ordered a burger and chips, salmon penne pasta and smoked haddock for our mains. The haddock was the only meal we were happy with as the burger arrived without the advertised onion rings and it was hunt the salmon in the pasta sauce! When the waitress later returned to clear our plates, she asked if we enjoyed our meals. When we replied that there was a few problems she informed us she’d forward our comments to the chef. Surely the manageress, who was sitting at the bar drinking, could have dealt with the problem there and then. We were then promptly asked if we wanted any desserts! There was no offer of any complimentary coffees/desserts and when the bill arrived, no reduction was given. Customer service is obviously not high on their agenda......we suggest more training should be given when dealing with customer complaints.

Stayed for three nights and when we arrived were given the key to room 5 up a very dodgy “fire escape style” metal staircase! To say the room was small would be an understatement!, There was a double bed with headboard against the wall and approx 15 inches of space on the other three sides. If it had been a 3 foot single there wouldn’t of been much room, no where to store our accompanying suitcases except for in the en-suite shower room. No windows other than a very dirty looking overhead velux unit - so very claustrophobic! We asked if other rooms were available and were shown to a downstairs room in the “garden” which had some self catering facilities but had to pay almost double for this room! The room itself was clean but the floor in the Wet Room style en-suite never completely dried out, maybe because the filter was full of long black hairs. Shower head was dirty (black) and the whole room needed a deep clean! The new manageress greeted us for the very early breakfast (finished at 8.30am) dressed in her Jim jams covered by a long cardigan - not very professionally! However, the breakfast waitress Jane was much more presentable and obviously worked hard. She provided us with a very nice freshly cooked breakfast over the three days although we did seem to be the only clients - perhaps to early for other guests. We also had a meal in the pub bar on our first evening, my wife’s sea bass and my smoked salmon tagliatelle were both good sized portions and tasty. So my rating of two stars mainly relates to the accomodation, we booked on Hotels.com and the room photos shown on the website were NOT those of the accomodation on offer, plus the room we upgraded to had easily rectifiable faults. Shame because Long Sutton is a nice small town with an hourly chiming church clock and Friday market - either of which, along with the lack of on-site parking may affect your stay!!

I took four generations of family there for what was supposed to be a celebratory birthday meal. In the past it has always been very pleasant, but it has new management (and I use the term very loosely). The staff couldn't be bothered, the manageress was only interested in going outside and talking on her phone and constantly having a fag. She was rude, couldn't be bothered and the food was inedible. There was a grubby chalk board with four menu choices, all of which belonged in a transport cafe. The ham and eggs consisted of slices of wet ham from the co-op round the corner, topped with two fried eggs which were burned underneath and completely solid. The fish which arrived twenty minutes after the ham meals, was greasy and cold, and the hand cut chips were packets of fries which had also been purchased from the co-op because I watched the manageress bringing them back in through the pub. We didn't stay for a dessert, None of us could eat the food and we went for an Indian meal instead. DIABOLICAL. We will never go there again

Stopped there on a business trip on 29th November. The welcome was very friendly and professional. Unfortunately they informed me that they had a problem with the hot water. Quick splash and a warm up with a nice tipple and good hearty meal. Piping hot shower in the morning and away to meeting well refreshed. Will certainly be back in the future

The owners need to realise they are in the hospitality business. We were not advised of a boiler fault when we checked in and had no hot running water in the evening or the following morning. There was no one around to take responsibility, and the overall staff attitude unfriendly and confrontational.

Booked for one night Saturday 20 0ctober as visited the outlet shopping at Spalding, this accommodation was only short drive away. The website was misleading regarding parking inferred private however limited parking was referring to on street parking free from 6pm and advised of further small public car park short distance away. Staff on arrival very pleasant shown to room which was up a steep set of metal stairs so not suitable for people with limited mobility. The room was very small more suited to a single than a double, only window was a velux quite high up which some people could find claustiphobic. The shower was not very clean there was black mould in shower and the shower heads not very pleasant, the large overhead was filthy and the smaller head was not much better but still looked like it could do with some attention I do not think they had ever been cleaned which unfortunately resulted in a subsequent ear infection for me. ☹️ The vent in the ensuite also could have received some cleaning attention as did the ledge of the velux window, thankfully it was only for one night. I did raise issues of room cleanliness with lady who served our breakfast in the morning, she did say she would raise with manager so possibly will/ has been resolved, I sincerely hope so! We ate in the pub in the evening , food was nice though chips portion small (child size), was surprised the menu was limited but we enjoyed what we ordered. Only awarded 2 star as cleanliness of room really let the premises down.

We had high hopes for Palmer on our venture to find the perfect Sunday dinner, but with our deepest regrets we are sorry for your loss. The Roast Potatoes was an abomination to mankind our quest for a crispy roast potato continues, however the gravy was outstanding, for the price you pay compared to the amount of meat given is saddening. The selection of desert are weak. Service was also disappointing. Will not be returning. Yours sincerely The Three Musketeers!

I have visited this restaurant 3 times in the last year. The bar itself is lovely and the staff very attentive and polite. My main complaint is that there is only one choice on the menu for a vegetarian and it has never changed. Goats cheese tart. I am not particularly fond of goats cheese but hey ho that's all there is. On Tuesday I ordered the tart yet again - the pastry was hard and I couldn't eat it. The accompaniment chips salad and pickles were very good though. Please can you look at your menu and give it a shake up. An alternative would be great. I heard other people ordering tart on the night so I am not the only vegetarian in town. If there were more imaginative options and choice I would visit more often because it is a lovely bar.

We've been here a couple of times before and it's been great, however our latest visit was not a great experience. Portions were small, presentation wasn't anything special, looked like meals I could of in nocked up myself as a quick tea at home, nothing special at all, certainly didn't look like a restaurant dining experience. Also, never come across a restaurant that stipulates on the menu if you want steak they need 48 hours notice! And even if they do, they should tell people when they book in as we had 2 of our party very disappointed on the night. The whole dining experience was also ruined by a group of loud, drunk locals sitting in the dining area and talking and swearing at the top of their voices so we couldn't even hear ourselves having a conversation. If people have paid for a dining experience no matter how bad that was, they should not have to put up with a table full of loud, swearing locals who were just there for the drink, keep the two things separate! Really dark and dingy in the restaurant, we struggled to read the menu due to how badly lit it was. The waitress started the evening by telling us what wasn't available off the menu, which in itself seemed odd at the beginning of the weekend to of already run out of so much. Needless to say this one bad experience overshadows previous good ones, it looks like the place has gone down hill, we won't be back! Must say though this is by no means a reflection of the staff they were lovely, it's on the owners!
