Ossies Fish & Chips in Croydon

Got a ton of fries for just £2.50, couldn’t get a better deal anywhere!!

While staying on the line two customers in front of me asked for ketchup and mayonnaise on the side , when my turn came I've asked only for mayonnaise... I was surprised to see that I've been asked for 30pence while the customers in front of me haven't been asked to pay for their sauce.... I had £1.50 ready for tips.... so I gave him that and I felt stupid I was supposed to ask for mayonnaise for all the tip instead.... Only some customers need to pay for sauces ? What makes the difference? I paid £11.50 for my meal while the ones in front paid £6 for a fishburger.... It's free sauce for fishburger ? But not for cod ?

Even outside of standard dining hours, the standard of food is excellent. Beautiful, soft , flaky cod, crispy batter, perfect chips, and GENEROUS portions. Thanks for keeping your standards so high.

Great place, Fish is always fresh and so is chips. Not the most comfortable if you want to sit there and eat, but great for take-away! Probably one of the best Fish&Chips places for quality of the food in South London! Stuff is also very polite and helpful. If it was bit more comfortable for seating - it would have been 5-stars. Still ... 4-stars and Thumbs up!

Dont do the ribs no more so wont be going back there again

Had 2 regular cod and medium chips delivered Saturday night for the first time. Chips were OK but fish was gross the batter was just a soggy mush. I don't know if we were unlucky or if this was as good as it gets in Croydon.

Gone down hill, fish was cooked fresh and was nice, chips were not nice been sitting in heated cabinet for a while. Meal was also expensive for what it was. the atmosphere was dismal.

Good quality fish...as for the large chips, large is perhaps an understatement.

This is our Saturday night treat. Compared to other chippys in area very well priced and food well cooked and always fresh.

Good food portions. The cod is very meaty (just a bit great but can always dab that off!). Great sized curry sauce, more than you need! Chips are nice and crispy. Would recommend for the price!

Great traditional chippy with lots of character. The portions are enormous so maybe consider sharing.

Truly mediocre. Rubbish chips, dry battered sausage. I'm sure the food is reheated. Nothing special here at all.

Ordered a large cod and chips and a battered sausage. The guy who took my order waited until I paid before preparing the food, once payment was complete he then told me it would by 15 mins. My order came up to £15, when I got home I noticed the fish was freshly prepared, as it was piping hot, the chips and the sausage were not as fresh. The chips were warm/cold and the sausage was stiff. I’ve given a 4 because I don’t live far and the chips could’ve held their heat longer if they were fresh.

I went to this chips shop based on the previous operators reputation of good quality. The present operators production of good is not the same standards. Spare Ribs used to be good here, not any more, the barbecue flavours used now is not of good quality, and they told me its fresh today when it was clearly not, previous days ribs, that is dishonest in my book.

Update - Adding back previously docked stars for improved recent customer service. One staff member so no phone ordering possible. Prices through the roof. Certainly the best fish and chips in Croydon, probably, the world. Consistently excellent. Busy on a Friday. Recent change of those running the shop has, regrettably, allowed the service to deteriorate; phone often left off the hook precluding orders in advance, and the face-to-face experience could certainly be improved. Food still good. In the last 6-12 months; Phone unanswered and left off the hook so cannot order ahead; if ordering ahead it is still necessary to wait up to 30 minutes in the shop for no reason when the food is cooked, ready and unallocated but they just are not managing customer orders properly, no matter how simple. In the last 3 months orders on the phone taken, fufilled and met expectations, so restoring 2 more stars.

Really good food and such a kind owner!! He offered a workshop to our students and taught them to prepare the fish and the potatoes. That is something their parents will love! And he is a funny person. The students loved the experience.

We've been using Ozzies now for many years, almost every Saturday . The food is very nice and I've always found the staff to be great. In fact, the guys working there now are always welcoming and look after their customers so well.

I have been here a few times and food had been good. The last visit, chips tasted like it had been there for a while. I am now looking for a new chip shop to take my future customs.

This was one of my favourite fish and chips shops but then the people who run the shop changed (2020) and it just doesn't taste the same as the before. Probably it's the way they fry or some technique or the quality of the product something which gave that good taste before, the current (3rd one after 2020) and previous one who run the shop doesn't know... Hopefully they'll get better by experience... It is still a good place to have some good fish and chips... Those who are regulars and had before 2020 would know the difference...

Fresh and tasty fish n chips with reasonable prices ( large Cod & chips =£11).

Not from the area, but needed some fuel en route home. Glad we stopped here, great value for money and great food too.

I visited this place and was sold old reheated chips, they were disgusting and made me feel sick.. Upon realising this when I got home, I called them to tell them that the chips they sold me was reheated old chips. The guy on the phone was rude and shouty and was basically telling me that I was lying, no apology no offer of a refund. I then told him I coming back to the shop, I live 5 minutes away.. Back at the shop, I placed the chips on the counter and showed him the old disgusting chips and asked him “do these look fresh to you?” He then insinuated that I bought them an hour ago!! When I bought them 10 minutes ago.. I asked why would I go to the trouble of coming out of my house to return the chips if they were fresh?? He offered a partial refund for the chips.. After a shouty exchange the other guy who works there walked in and wanted to argue telling me I bought them TWO HOURS ago! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.. I said just give me back ALL of my money.. He gave me back a full refund and told me not to come back lol Like I’d come back to be sold old chips.. They knowingly sold me those old chips and instead of putting things right.. They wanted to argue, safe to say I will NEVER come back here.. They’re not to be trusted with the FRESHNESS of their food.

Everyone is raving about this place,so thought I would try it for the first time,although you get great portion size,which you would expect for the price,it all repeated on me after I ate it,and it defo wasn't as nice as my regular place I eat,the curry sauce was just like a green watery liquid with not much flavour,so safe to say,I won't be using them again

Over priced fish and chips that are ok, but not outstanding. It has been a while since I had fish and chips from this place abd feel that it has gone down somewhat which is a bit of a shame.

I never buy fish and chips on a Friday... but this Friday was a special Friday... and so glad I went there and got my Chips and Sauasages. There service was lovely. I didn't have to wait for ages for the chips The chips were softly cooked. Over all, happy with my Chips and Sausages, so we're the children. 🥳

Great fish and chips, and a very good curry sauce. As with all places that don't always cook to order, it's best to order something they don't have ready if you want it extra fresh!

Used to be the best chip shop in the area, especially for their ribs but since 2 of the brothers moved to another shop on the coast the quality has gone down. The ribs don't have as much meat on them as they used to and the seasoning isn't as good. Chips sizes and quality are very inconsistent, you used to be assured of the same style chips ever time but alas not now. I've gone back to the chip shop I left, Mr Chippy, to come here and they're really consistent now, no ribs but the fish and chips are delicious 😋 Sorry Ossies, I really miss the decent ribs 😣

Such a shame the original owners have left The quality and service have plummeted. The chips can only be described as bloody awful I will never go there again.

Was the best but after change of management it's quite poor now. Many chips inedible, fish oily. Won't go here again, unless stuck.

I normally use another shop, but was pleasantly pleased with my first visit. They have recently changed ownership. The only negative is that their portions need to be consistent, but give a go.

My husband has a beautiful piece of fresh cod delivered to heron view carehome twice a week 85 year old .with 24 hr care best meal he has eaten well done making him happy he HAS PSP THANK YOU

Looks like management/ownership has changed? We've been going here for 8 years and unfortunately it wasn't as great as before. The Chips were OK, but the fish was very greasy and did not look like the cod we have gotten on many occasions. Such a shame!

I have always used ossies for my ribs. I went today and got a portion with chips chips were lovely but ribs were awful. They were under cooked had no flavour. When I spend that amount I expect cooked and flavour food. I threw 80 percent away I won't waste my time again. Its ashame because it was one of my favourite takeaway.

WAITED HOUR AND A HALF AFTER BEING TOLD LASTEST WOULD BE 45 MINUTES. NOT IMPRESSED. TGE COD BATTER WAS HARD AND OVERCOOKED

For the 1st time we we're disappointed with our chips they were really soggy and we couldn't finish our meal the main owner was at another shop so maybe the staff weren't on the ball

Unpleasant staff and food not fresh

Order last night a large cod, haddock and small chips. They took an hour, and delivered two massive packages of chips, no fish and charged me 25£, unacceptable.

Have been waited more than 30 mins to order from uber with two big portion of cod and haddock but the order were totally wrong. They didnt put any fish and it comes up with a big portion of chips only. Tried to call and ask but the restaurant didnt answer the phone. Horrible experiences, i will stop ordering from this place

I have frequented the shop as a local for the past 7 years and have always given five stars for the food as well as service. However, today's experience has not been great. Food was tasty. However the order was wrong as we ordered a large and got a small. We were charged correctly but the order size was wrong. It was too busy to correct it. The service was not the same as it was with the usual owners.

Yes I have to agree with David (previous comment). the new owners just can't manage the demand of orders like the previous owner did. We used to be customers of Ossies for some 15 years, no more. The food and service has gone downhill. I might try them in a years time when they get their act together.

This is my local fish & chip shop and I have frequented it for over 22 years. My previous reviews have been nothing but positive because the food and service was always spot on. Sadly I had to witness the new owner/manager arguing with a dissatisfied customer, who had brought back a bag of scraggy chips he had bought the previous evening. I want to stress that I was already seated waiting for my order so I witnessed the entire interaction. The owner (or whoever he is) kept saying "I can't do nothing about it" and "I don't give customers chips like this" which is like accusing the customer of lying. Anyway, this is nothing like customer satisfaction so I cancelled my order and I will now take my money elsewhere. It's a shame the brothers moved on. Good luck guys.

Update! This place has gone downhill since Ossie left! The food is greasy and stale and customer service is so poor.

Fishy tasting chips! Wish I knew sooner that they no longer keep everything separate. Going to really miss Ossie and his family. The food isn’t the same since having new owners. Need to find a new chippy now

Me and my family absolutely love Ossies. The best fresh fish and chips ever, my son loves their chicken burgers they are quality 😁 Very happy customer's and would recommend anyone who hasn't tried them to do so.

This chip shop now has new owners. They no longer cook their chips separately from the fish or meat. I unfortunately did not know this and ended up very unwell. Beware anyone with food allergies or vegetarians.

Love it! Best fish and chips, and let's not forget the ribs. A friendly and polite greeting all the times seal's the deal.
