Ossies Fish Bar in Canterbury

We live no where near the sea, but can get much better fish and chips locally here. The fish was thin, oily and smelly. Asked for a large cod and chips, and received two pieces of fish, one which was a small piece of haddock. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be many other fish and chips locally. Disappointing.

Not dog friendly as per last review ,had to walk 30mins to your other branch . Wasn't impressed as it was hot and dog was stressed by the long walk

Quite simply the bag of chips I’ve had in years. Quality potato’s, clean oil and great service. Excellent price too. Beautiful beach close by to eat on too.

Excellent takeaway fish & chips. The team are super efficient & a really friendly bunch. The food is delicious. Bit of confusion in method of payment, the sign on the window as you walk in states Cash Only. We went to a cashpoint up the road as we all had cards, only to see other customers paying electronically 🤷‍♀️ That aside, the food & service are top notch.

We were looking for fish and chips on a recent trip to Kent and found this place. On arrival, it was packed, but there was one free table, so we sat down. We both ordered the cod and chips from a friendly waiter. It came pretty fast considering the number of people in there and those queuing for takeaways. It was delicious and fresh, and everything fish and chips should be. The portions were generous and reasonably priced. I'd definitely come here again.

The food is good but i don't like that is ver y greasy but the local was cosy and it was clean and smell greasy

Hello everyone.This is the Best fish and chips in town. highly recommended . Haddock and chips was amazing!

We just spent £56.00 and returned home with watery peas meant to be mushy, my large haddock was smaller than my sons cod and all the chips are grey and black making most the meal inedible. We are so disappointed!

Cheap and friendly, chips not great but there were loads. Lots of bad/bruised bits, little soggy too. Nice fishcake.

The seating area was clean, and none of the tables were cluttered. The young man who took our order was polite and friendly. We ordered cod and chips and tea for 2, and he told us how long we would have to wait, as the fish was cooked fresh. The tea came in nice big mugs, and was served while we waited for the food. The cod and chips, with tartare sauce, was beautifully cooked, and totally delicious. I would definitely recommend this place if visiting Whitstable.

The take away fish 'n chips was very nice but there was a hair in my portion! Very offputting! I wish the staff would wear hair nets to prevent this from happening. There was also a hair in the box of wooden forks!

Due to reviews my daughter and I travelled to here from Canterbury on Sat 24 Sep - first alarm bells ‘cash only’ …. Who does that?????? (Why not offer card payments unless … makes you think)… We went to find an atm and came back to order - guy serving (est 6pm) was awful - 1 cod and chips - 1 of sausage and chips - with curry sauce - £19.40!!! Snatched my £20 note and was as miserable as could be. Got the food and not generous portions - but cod and chips nice - but curry sauce was so runny we just put it in the bin. We were so disappointed as made the effort to go there but would definitely not recommend it. Service so poor and he was soooo miserable …. And what chippy can’t make a good curry sauce or more importantly are a registered business to take card payments to pay HMRC?

Loved this fish & chips shop. One of 2 in whitstable. The queue outside speaks for itself in how popular it is. Friends enjoyed their generous portioned fish & chips. They accommodated my gluten intolerance by going off menu & preparing unbattered fish with lemon & pepper. It was delicious.

Lovely freshly cooked fish and chips 🍟. We ate in restaurant but there was a lot of takeaways going out. We had 2 cod chips and one plaice and 🍟 musey peas and curry sauce must have 🍵 highly recommended 👌

I always enjoy the fish and chips here, but sadly on the last two visits the fish has been overcooked. The last time , so much so that if we hadn't walked so far down the beach I would have returned them . Watch it Ossies there are far more fish takeaways in the sea.

We were looking forward to fresh fish and chips on our day out by the sea so popped in whilst passing. We were promptly seated and our order was taken. After about 25 mins of waiting we asked if it was going to be much longer as we had a train to catch. The waitress then arrived with them immediately as they had been sitting behind the counter! (Not sure how long they had been there). The fish was very fresh and we both enjoyed our meal although we had to eat fast as not to miss our train. The only other down side of our experience was the fact that they charged £5 for 2 cans of coke which must be around 25p wholesale. This we thought was an extortionate mark up and I note others have also mentioned this in previous reviews.

Ossie’s must have had a bad day the day we called in for takeaway fish and chips. The chips were not cooked enough, some were quite hard, the batter on the fish was stodgy. Shame we were looking forward to our fish and chips by the sea but the seagulls enjoyed it!!

Called in here today for fish and chips. Had haddock, which was a very good sized portion and well cooked. Chips, golden brown and delicious! Small portion of tartar sauce and lemon wedge accompanied the meal. Most enjoyable. Staff friendly.

Got there 20mins before it closed on a Thursday night. The chips were amazing but the fish lacked something. I ordered plaice and was disappointed to be honest. They also forgot to give us our order of mushy peas that we paid for.

my friends and i really enjoyed the food we got from ossies, good portion sizes for what you pay. there are some vegetarian options too, so something for everyone. due to it's location it does build quite the line of people outside at peak times so be aware of that, especially in summer.

Had fish a chips on 1/10 , chips ok but fish had really strong fishy odour , may have been IQF ( Icelandic frozen ) unfortunately £19 for 2 fish & chips a little overpriced as half went in the bin

Fancied a traditional chippy rather than the famous Whitstable oysters and that is definitely what you get with Ossies. Went for jumbo battered sausage rather than the traditional fish. It was all very tasty and not at all greasy. It was payment by cash only which seemed a bit strange in the current circumstances but otherwise it was sensible queuing arrangements for the times and they were only serving one customer at a time. Hope to return when can sit in the restaurant.

despite the pandemic they were using common sense on taking and accepting cash for orders whereas other establishments were using apps and credit card payment for a bag of chips???

After standing and waiting patiently for 45 minutes being may i add the 5th person in the queue i was finally served so i placed my order then was told to wait outside which i did, i then wanted to add another item to my order so i went inside to do this and i was greeted with such rudeness that the worker started making up my order to get rid of me he charged me for what i had ordered previously, which is fine then when he was confirming what food was inside i then tried to tell him that i had ordered more than what was inside he started getting very irate and pointing at me rolling his eyes at me and in the end i just left without my full order, that i had paid for i am not one to stand and make a fuss at all so i swallowed losing my money to the rude man, and went to the seafront to feed my children and i went without what disgusting service i was not an awkward customer at all. Maybe if they wasnt taking telephone orders and then making those orders up inbetween serving the queue outside they would be able to serve thier paying customers with a bit more clarity and respect. The worker behind the counter was flustered in a state of a panic, and totally messed up i will definetely not be returing.

Visited Whitstable with my partner today. We both ordered sausage and chips. Chips were freshly cooked. Battered Sausage was very nice, the only slight disappointment was the savaloy as felt it had sat around for some time. Also would be nice to have option to pay by card. However overall this would not prevent me visiting again next time we come to Whitstable. Very nice 8/10

Whitstable is all about seafood, so it makes sense that you’ll find excellent fish and chips somewhere here. The four of us decided on Ossies and it was quality!We shared a large serving of chips between us and then had a fillet of haddock each. In reality, we probably could’ve shared 2 fillets of haddock between us.But god, it was delicious! The thick cut chips were perfect! The right amount of salt and vinegar added, not too greasy, not too hot. The batter on the fish was a bit heavy, but not too oily or greasy either. It’s a hard balance to keep it clean and not get fish and chips too greasy, but at Ossies they get it right!

If this is the best . . . I wasn't' t impressed I'm afraid. The fish was ok but the chips were soggy and clumped together. We only walked five minutes to the seafront to eat them, so they must have started off that way!

Judging by the reviews and the queue outside the door at the weekend, you would have thought this place was the go-to chip shop. I've had better elsewhere. The chips from Ossie's were...limp, maybe the oil needs changing ? And looked as if they were from old potatoes.Fish was ok but nothing to write home about. Been there, got the t shirt type thing, i would return to Whitstable again as its a quirky place to visit but would choose another chippie.

Our meal looked ok but the fish was very dry as if it had been in the heater for too long. The chips were a bit cold. Overall very under par, paticularly as the price was a bit on the high side at £9 for Cod and chips. Not a patch on Pams Kitchen in Hastings.

Disappointed with our visit today. The fish was full of oil. My piece was inedible where overcooked so shared my husbands. The curry sauce was thrown straight out as it was inedible. Will definitely not return

Reliably good fish & chips etc. Usually much better chips than their Tankerton sister restaurant a mile east. Eat in or take away.

Really wanted to eat the fish and chips on the beach but sadly the weather wasn’t having none of it. Ended up driving and finding a space and eating it in the car, so nearly the beach. Lovely fish and chips!

Really disappointed today when i went with my baby and visiting family. We wanted to sit in but no space so got takeout, then a space appeared and we were told we couldnt sit down, despite having a young baby that needed breastfeeding. One kind staff member let us sit down but we felt very uncomfortable. Have previously enjoyed this place and we spend alot of money here when we have visitors. Would have appreciated an apology for their rudeness. We shall not be returning and will switch to a new local next time.

Just enjoyed a great meal with family. Service especially catering for 3 and 7 year old was fantastic. The lollipops at the end a real winner ! We enjoyed cod, haddock and scampi. Nice and fresh and great chips ! (Sorry no.pics taken - too busy scoffing the food ! )

Small queue for takeaway. Decided to eat in. Basic order for chips and mushy peas for 4. In the meantime queue for takeaway got very big and that was prioritised rather than those in the eat in area. We were just ignored. 35 mins later no sign of food but assured it was 3 mins away. Another 10 mins later we said if it wasnt ready in the next few minutes we would leave as very hungry. Told leave then. Shocking customer service. Why ignore sit in customers.

Went in for a sit down meal with my family after a bracing New Year's Day walk along the sea front. Have been there a number of times and have never been disappointed.

We popped in last Friday for lunch the fish & the scampi were hot & generous portions with very good flavour But the chips weren't hot & there was lots of skin & eyes on them But we'd go back

In a town known for its fishing boats and fresh caught fish, sits this little gem. There is a wait (15mins or so) as fish is fried as you order. Reasonable prices, friendly staff. A real gem

First the positives: the staff were really pleasant and friendly. Yes, we had to wait, but I'm always happy to at a fish bar, and we were given some chips to munch while waiting. The chips were pretty good, but the fish fillets were too thin, which meant that there was more batter than fish. I like to feel that I would still have a substantial fish meal without the batter, but this left me disappointed. I'd like to have given 4 stars, and hopefully next time I will.
