Very grubby restaurant. Owner is lovely and kind. This is popular with the older clients who like the homely feel. Thick layer of dust on some surfaces and picture frames. Poor food hygiene practices witnessed. Tea cup had dust in it. Thick grime on cream and milk jugs - I suspect they don’t have a dishwasher or are reusing them repeatedly. Looked on council website - food hygiene rating 1.

Fillet of plaice perfectly cooked with fresh veg, as much as I wanted as silver service. Lucky find and seem to only allow in enough customers so that the chef can cook without a long wait. Not your usual cafe/restaurant and do not take card payment. I will go again next time I am in Sidmouth.

Not sure how this place got the ranking it has. Its Hyacinth Bucket aspirations were wiped out by the very grubby feel to the place and the sticky table. It was raining, so we stayed. Service was very friendly. The food was very school-canteen-ish, but was adequate and the price reflected that. The loo (not for clients, I guess, or public, but offered on request) is a disgrace and If I were the proprietor I would do something about it as an urgent priority - it was shocking - I wouldn’t have eaten there had I used it before the meal. I will not return

Some Very Good News for Sidmouth, Osborne's Coffee Shop has reopened as Kate is now feeling better. We visited this Retro Restaurant today and our Service, Coffee and Food were excellent as usual. The varied Menu changes frequently and is shown on the Blackboard outside, it's very reasonably priced, but it's not for everyone, as it is the style of home-cooking practiced by my Mum and Grandma, and the decor features ancient Movie Stars. If you are from the Generation who like Meals with plenty of Veggies and Gravy, and Traditional Deserts with Custard, this is the place for you, think of it as Culinary Time Travel. We had Mains of Lasagne and Steak & Onion Pie. Our Deserts were Treacle Tart and Marmalade Bread & Butter Pudding (with Custard of course.) Our Meal was faultless, friendly and very filling, and we are already looking forward to our next visit!

The centre of Sidmouth was full of tourists and everywhere was full for lunch. We went a little further out of the centre and found this place. Looking through the door, it looked full as well but a young lady saw me and came over. She informed me that a table would be free very shortly. We waited about 2 mins and were then led to a very nice table with comfortable bench seats. The service was swift but our order was a little slow in coming. Apparently the toaster in the kitchen (I think the conveyor type) had thrown a wobbly and was not cooperating. Anyway after a further short wait, out came our order. It was a good size but my wife could not finish hers, so being my birthday and feeling generous, I scoffed what remained on her plate. This place is super clean and great effort was made to keep it that way whilst we were there. Everything in the loo was hands free, soap delivery, tap operation and of course a powerful drier that nearly blew you out of the room. As for the bill, talk about value for money. The staff were very helpful and friendly and we were given a cheery farewell as we left. Brilliant!

Luckily we had booked a table for lunch as we have been here before so knew how busy it can be. My husband had the roast lamb which came with fresh vegetables and looked very nice. I wanted the cottage pie but after ordering the lady was very apologetic because it had sold out. I changed to have the lasagne and it was an excellent choice. Both meals were beautifully cooked and presented. Also a lovely pot of tea, not a teabag thrown in a mug! Lovely lady serving as well, but would advise you book to be sure of a table. Highly recommend if you like fresh cooked meals.

Visited for the first time for ‘lunch’ and was not disappointed. I had the special of roast lamb that came with new /baked potatoes and mix vegetables- absolutely delicious. Meat really tender and served with a good thick gravy. The others had home made steak pie with chips and gammon with all the trimmings. Everything served lovely and hot and deserts of apple crumble with custard finished us off. Highly recommend and will definitely go again.

We were shunted off to the back of the restaurant where the front part was completely vacant apart from one table, which we didn’t think much of at first. We ordered two dishes between the three of us as we are not big eaters - when we mentioned this sharing we were given a look by the manager, and napkins were slammed on the table in front of us. When the food came, we were told that we could just place the plates in the centre of the table to share - when we asked for an extra plate, we were told there was an extra charge. The garden vegetable soup of the day bears an uncanny resemblance to the ‘cup a soup’ cream of vegetable version (including funny croutons and the lumps you get when you don’t mix in the powder properly) - added carrots and the ends of string beans do not seem to distract from this. We found it hard to catch someone’s attention to get the bill (our location not helping whatsoever). Overall we found our experience at this restaurant disappointing with its sour service and food one makes when there’s nothing else left in the fridge or cupboards.

My wife loves crab served in any way and on our recent visit to Sidmouth it was essential to find a place to satisfy her taste buds.We saw Osbornes on the main street looked at the chalkboard menu by the door and thought this looks good. We went inside and were welcomed graciously and shown to a small table at the back of the Restaurant. The food arrived promptly and was delicious and tea was served in the best China. We loved the decor of 40/50/60's stars of film and entertainment and the ambience of the place. Lastly a special thank you to the lady in charge for preserving "old fashioned service". We enjoyed our visit so much that we made a second visit later in the week.

We arrived here on a cold misty January day so understandably Sidmouth was quiet and there was only one other person in the cafe. The cafe is dated with pictures on the walls from the 1950s and 60s of film stars and celebrities, accompanied by music of the same era, Andy Williams was playing at the time. Therefore it may not suit some people but we were more interested in the food. We liked the look of the menu and ordered scrambled eggs on toast and a beef and horseradish toastie. The tea was served in a lovely china teapot with bone china cups and saucers. The food arrived quite quickly and we really enjoyed it.

Osborne's is not our only port of call in Sidmouth but it is always our first port of call, and we always enjoy it. We have been coming here for 30 years. Osborne is a small restaurant with few tables but cozy for that. It's not a place to rely on to drop in unannounced unless you really do drop lucky in passing. We popped into here for a light lunch and found it to be nice, There was one waitress who did not stop singing to the 1950 music, which was quirky but pleasant. The food was wholesome and plentiful. The liver was a bit overcooked for my liking but the mash was soft and tasty. The whole atmosphere made you think of the 1950 and 1960 where you sat down and were served your food. The food had non of the frills and twists of modern cooking but just good filling food. The were a lot of older people in here getting a dinner, and it was just right for them, a good meal, hot and well cooked for under a tenner. I hope I can find somewhere like this when I am of that age. The place was well kept, clean and tidy and caters for the older generation, and also a great find for a lunch if its cold.

We visited last week on a day trip to Sidmouth during our holiday. Last year we had found this place but unfortunately we had not booked and the empty tables were reserved. This year on arriving at Sidmouth the first thing we did was to go and have a coffee and reserve a table for lunchtime. Food was excellent , all home cooked and fresh vegetables. I understand the reason to book, some locals go there regularly so have their table reserved and are well know to the owner. As a local I have tried most restaurants in Sidmouth and without doubt this is the worst. The food is prepared with so little thought as to be practically inedible. The potato with cheese was definitely inedible, rock hard potato and do little cheese that you had to try real hard to taste it. Complaining does no good as the woman who manages this place is so rude and try's to make you feel bad for complaining. Never any apologies. Whilst we were there she turned a family away because they had a very young child! This is supposed to be a seaside restaurant, and even the older people in Sidmouth have grandchildren. Have since spoken to others and all agree how bad this place is. Which I had asked before I visited.

Really wanting only a sandwich we were taken by surprise when we were told the menu was on a board outside and then the woman reeled off the dinner menu. However my wife and I had not eaten any substantial fish for a while so we decided to have the plaice instead of a sandwich. Well the plaice was delicious even better than the last time I had some a while ago which I thought then was the best I ever had. The chips were delicious not the oven variety, and the broccoli the tastiest I have ever had. Carrots and peas were the other vegetables, tinned sliced ones and the peas of the frozen variety, tasty though. Altogether a very tasty meal. What an experience - Faulty Towers has nothing on this place ! We arrived for lunch asked for a table for 4. We were asked by the lady if we required a main meal or a light snack. We stated we planned to have a main meal but would like to see menu. My partner and his daughter chose, the soup (apparently Carrot and Coriander) £4.75, I had a prawn cocktail £6.75 and my partner's son chose the lasagne £9.95. What a farce, the soup was watery without any flavour. The prawn cocktail was definitely not worth £6.95 and the lasagne was the size of a saucer ! As we waited for the meal to come out, we noted that every table had reserved on them and depending how this lady felt and whether you answered her questions correctly and she liked what you said, she would remove one to allow people to sit. A lovely elderly couple came in - do you do teacakes they asked yes she said, they sat ordered a hot drink and requested teacakes to be told she was only doing lunches !?!?!??! Another lady came in on her own sat down at a table asked for a coffee which she was given, she asked for a slice of cake and was told they didn't serve cake but it was too late for this lady she had already got her coffee - she actually told her to go down the road to another place if she wanted cake! This woman's constant humming/singing had my partner's kids in fits of stifled giggles - it was horrible. Seriously how this woman has a busy god only knows - very expensive if not hilarious visit - we will dine out on this for years to come - bad service, bad food and very BAD MANNERS

I should have heeded the mixed reviews on Tripadvisor but we had been here years ago and enjoyed our meal so thought we would give it a try when we thought it had not changed. Still the photos of past celebrities on the wall and the same lady owner/manager. The carpet was rather shabby and there was not much room at the table. We had booked a table as it was folk week. I ordered pan fried chicken with tarragon sauce as I love tarragon. The table of three next to us was asked if everything was alright for both of them. Seemingly she had taken a dislike to one member of the party. Our meals came but mine was poached chicken covered with parsley sauce when I tasted it. I pointed this out and was told that 'the base is parsley sauce with tarragon added!' There was no tarragon in it. She walked off and came back to say that 'he would make some more'. So I nibbled my veg and sauté potatoes which were fine while I waited. She brought a small jug of sauce and when I said I did not want more sauce on the parsley sauce I already had, she snatched the plate away and grabbed my knife and fork off me and said, 'Don't have it then'. The people on the next table left and said we should leave without paying. We are not like that, so waited a while and nothing was forthcoming so we left £15 on the table to cover one meal and drinks and went. Her humming/singing is false jollity.

The food was fine although I don't think the waitress liked me by the way she pointed out the lasagne was home made, yes thank you, I do understand what home made is, I cook from scratch for each meal. On giving me my meal I was then told it was hot as cooked to order, hmmm ok. The humming was very quaint, the pictures I feel will give me nightmares for a fair while.

A lady at the council recommended Osbornes. A bit old fashioned but we didn't mind and loved the old photos. The owner admitted the place would be getting a makeover. A bit pricey but a dessert is included! A massive lunch and nice pudding I think we kept them past closing time! Hope to eat there again :o)

A small restaurant in the main street next to Boots the Chemist. Freshly prepared food, great back ground music without being intrusive and accompanied by the owners lovely voice. Always friendly and obliging, prompt service and nearly always full. I usually book a table to be on the safe side.

Had mid morning coffee and cake here. Staff very helpful and friendly. Not an extensiove choice onthe menu but more than adequate. Interesting photos of bygone stars of stage and screen on the walls. Very entertaining trying to work out who some of them were!

We had friends down from Derby for the week and they wanted to treat us to a meal. You choose they said, so we thought we would try somewhere we had not been before. It was a mistake. We booked a table for 7.30 and when we arrived and seated it was a small table, cosy to say the least. Room for the plates, wine and condiments only (just)We were not asked or offered Starters when we questioned the menu - the owner/manager just abruptly pointed to the wall with a menu on. I could barely read it and gave up having my friend tell me what was on offer. We ordered a btl of wine and awaited our meal. Before it arrived we did ask for water for all four. The food duly arrived and the vegetables were served to the 2 ladies (that answered my question - where would they be put on the table) Us guys had ordered Rib Eye and chips arrived in a separate dish, the owner arrived with them and announced "chips" Hmmm we were not offered an option and I would much rather of had a healthy option ie boiled new potatoes as the ladies had. The chips might just as well have arrived on the plate with the steak!!!We were offered mustard (no options) and my friend said yes please. It arrived when he was half way through his meal!! At this point the owner said Oh you asked for water and rushed (well walked away) we presume to get it. However it never arrived. The steaks were Ok however certainly not cooked Medium as requested more like well done. We declined dessert as there was not anything inspiring. The single toilet is right by the kitchen and I had to paddle (glad I am a man and stand up) when I told the ladies they decided to wait until we had left before going. The continual loud humming by the owner was annoying and 2 of us looked at each other and exclaimed faulty towers. All in all not the best experience and not one to be repeated. Our friends had been to the Black Horse 2 nights previous and waited almost an hour only to have only 1 meal turn up. They commented that this restaurant was a little better as a t least they both got fed!!!Give it a miss

We called in on a whim and enjoyed the experience. Styled on a 40s/50s stage door establishment with pictures of stars from that era on the wall. Service mildly quirky and unintentionally entertaining and added to the atmosphere. Plenty of regulars greeted by name and food good traditional fare... If you want trendy go elsewhere! Its only a small place so at peak times don't accommodate sandwich eaters ... Fair enough they have a living to make!

My friend and I wanted a light lunch of a sandwich with a salad garnish as we were eating later, but after finding a table and being asked what we wanted were promptly told that they were only serving proper lunches not sandwiches and rudely told us to go and try 'Shauls' as they did sandwiches. Needless to say we didn't stay and headed up the road to another eatery where we had a great light lunch without any fuss!

On looking at the lunch as it was delivered to the table it looked very good. The chops were excellent and cooked well. However the vegetables were tasteless. The carrots,in my opinion, had been reheated from a previous day. The peas were of poor quality. The chips were I feel out of a packet and were oven heated. Cooked for convenience not quality. We have been in this establishment before, some years ago, and the meal was excellent. We are sorry we will not go in again. I paid £9.50 for my meal so it wasn't cheap!

Hadn't booked a table for lunch and all the tables had reserved on them but the owner let us have a table. They were very busy mainly with regulars but the service was efficient and cheerful. Apparently several staff were off so there were just 2 people working, one front of house and 1 in the kitchen. I had the roast lamb which was very tasty and my husband had salmon which he enjoyed. Good choice of puddings included in the price of the main meal. With a tea and a coffee the bill came to less than £21. Very good value for money. Best to book to make sure of getting a table at busy times.

We have eaten here on many occasions and have always had lovely food. We drive to Sidmouth go for lunch and then go for a walk. We normally have the roast of the day which comes with a pudding and is excellent value. Service is good with friendly welcoming staff and Kate, the owner, is always chatty and efficient. It's a very quirky place and a step back in time with all the old photos on the wall depicting theatre stars of yesteryear. I don't understand the negative reviews here at all. If you want lovely home cooked food and value for money then try it, you won't be disappointed!

What an enjoyable experience!!..Very 1940's music hall, with music of the era playing and film star photos over the walls. The proprietor sang along as she went about her business, lots of interesting, eccentric characters coming in and out. Had a very nice beef and horseradish sandwich which came with a little side salad ( with dressing!! ) which was very tasty indeed!. Maybe a bit pricey but nevertheless very enjoyable.

Had lunch during the week - absolutely packed fortunately had booked a table. Food was tasty and attractively presented. Not enough staff serving - had to wait rather a long time to be served and for the food to arrive. Didn't have a menu available waitress instead recounted the dishes served for lunchtime (I didn't have any idea how much each dish cost). Also had no idea the place did not accept debit cards and had no cash on me. Subsequently felt very stupid when I was told they do not accept any bank cards. I was asked to leave a bank card as security while I got cash out from a nearby machine. Pointed out to Kate that the coffee house window did not indicate that they only took cash. She informed me that there were no bank cards displayed so I should know they didn't accept them not a very pleasant attitude to have towards customers. Never found out how much each dish cost I was just given a total of the meal that I had ordered.

I have never had to write a bad review before (see any of my other reviews), but I feel compelled to share my experience. From the outside, it looked quite inviting, so we popped in - just requiring a light lunchtime snack, as we had planned to eat out in the evening. We were greeted by a lady who asked us if we were dining, and were shown to a table at the back of the room. Ok, so far. She asked if we wanted a main meal or a snack. As we were eating out later also, we said we'd just like a snack. It wasn't that we wanted to spend less - and this wasn't a problem - the sandwiches and snacks were more or less the same cost as the main meals! She (a little loudly, in my opinion) humphed, and more or less threw the snack menu at me. But I caught it(!), and we I ordered two jacket potatoes - one with prawns and one with cheese, and a latte and a soft drink. This is where things started to go horribly wrong! The drinks took about ten minutes to arrive. When they did, the coke arrived in a chipped glass. I thought "ok, this will do", but then our potatoes arrived... oh dear...Generally, when I order a potato with cheese, it's generally grated cheese on top. This one had the smallest amount of cheese, but had been put under a grill to melt what had been sparsely sprinkled over the top of the potato, an an attempt to make it look more. It didn't work though, so a little disappointing. However, the real problem was the wife's potato. She found a solid black lump in the top of it, which upon further investigation, went through the whole potato. It had most definitely gone bad!I tried to attract the attention of the lady serving, who proceeded to mill past our table until I physically stood up and in her way. I showed her the state of the food, and she said "oh, you can't see them in the kitchen". Are they cooking in the dark???!!She took the plate away and arrived back within a couple of minutes with a new one.Ok - so that was two things... But what I find the absolute worst was the fact that she didn't even offer an apology. A sorry doesn't always make things better, but it goes a long way, in my opinion! It was at the end that things *really* annoyed us. We stood up to go to the counter. The lady that had served us was stood there with her back to us. Because of the size of the counter and the chairs in the room, we had to stand at the end of the counter where she could walk out from behind of. Without looking she turned and banged straight in to me. Now the first thing that you'd expect would be an "oh I'm so sorry" from her. Oh no.. after the food experience, I wasn't really expecting it. Instead, we received a glare and a "whats the matter with you - I didn't do it on purpose". Again - no sign of an apology. So that sums it up, really. Bad (literally) food. Poor service. Terrible attitude. This is not a Michelin star restaurant. We weren't expecting a gourmet experience, and this place didn't disappoint with that. But poor food that wasn't checked before being brought to the table, along with service with a scowl, has ensured that we will never be going back there again! As I said at the start of this review - I have never written a poor review of a restaurant, but this restaurant really has an issue with its' staff and the way it operates.Avoid!

Show me hake on a menu and I am there! We walked in to this small and quirky café/restaurant and had a very nice meal! The food was freshly cooked and we enjoyed hake and sweet chiili with traditional veg.! Puds were good Lemon Torte and a great crumble and custard. The coffee was topped up without asking. Background music was 60's and showy with the owner singing along!

We managed to get a table for 5 on a Saturday night during a very busy folk week & enjoyed a well presented & reasonably priced meal of crab salad staters & either duck confit or chicken chasseur. The food was plentiful & well cooked, service with a smile from tired & busy staff & excellent atmosphere. Will return.

We have eaten at Osborne's before several years ago so we hoped it was as good as we remembered. Thankfully it was, good food reasonably priced, very pleasant atmosphere and excellent service. We found the staff very attentive but not obsequious .We did not want a full bottle of wine so bought by the glass, and very good wine it was too.( much better than the usual plonk) so we left feeling very relaxed and surprised at the equitable tariff. The restaurant is within 2 minutes walk of "The Esplanade" so we rounded off the evening with a stroll in the setting sun, perfect!

We popped into Osbornes yesterday for a sandwich & a coffee. From the outside it looked lovely, with a good selection of food on the menu board outside. The decor was in keeping with Sidmouth, very olde worlde. We ordered 2 coffees, which took 15 minutes to arrive & a cheese & onion toastie and a prawn sandwich, which arrived nearly 10 minutes later. It wasnt cheap (£6.95 for my prawn sandwich) and £6 ish for the cheese & onion toastie. The Cheese & onion toastie was adequate except for several pieces of onion skin that had to be removed as they were indigestable, it came with a few crisps & side salad. My prawn sandwich was just that - a few prawns & a bit of butter between 2 slices of white bread, a few crisps & a limp prepacked side salad. No mayonnaise or rose marie sauce. A dry prawn sandwich. For £6.95!!!The service was slow & we had to repeat what we wanted several times.Certainly not worth the wait. Certainly not worth the £19!Dont waste your money - there are plenty more nicer coffee shops up the road.

Good "home cooked" food, good coffee, friendly, lots of local people eat and have coffee there. Will reserve seats for meals. If you want to know what is going on in Sidmouth this is the place to go and chat with other customers. If you want to be by yourself Kate will find you a quiet table.

This coffee house is a ‘must’ for fans of 1940s and 50s film and music hall. It has an impressive period collection of signed artiste’s photos and, if you ask them, the proprietors have interesting stories to tell from living in a theatre boarding house. The coffee is worth stopping by for as well at this delightful spot close by the sea front.

My wife and I have various food allergies, so it was so good to be told that they can adapt the meals to meet our needs. And they did, GF, veg instead of potatoes, you name it, it was done. The food itself was excellent, all four of us had brilliant meals. Well worth a visit

We enjoyed our night at this well run, clean and friendly hotel. The three course evening meal was freshly prepared and delicious. Our room was spotless and well presented. We both are surprised this is only a two star rated hotel, as our experience exceeded many four stars we’ve stayed in. Our breakfast was again delicious. The staff are all attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. It has ample parking and a beautiful rear garden with seating. If we are in the region again, we would wholeheartedly head for The Tumbling Weir, Thank~you

Great venue for lunch, always busy, good food at reasonable prices. Until today, prices have risen, the place was half empty, the food still good but not exceptional so why the price hike? My breaded plaice with chips, peas and tartare sauce was £16.99! It was nice enough, not outstanding and available elsewhere in Sidmouth for a lot less. If they want more profit and less customers I think this approach will work, we will think twice before returning as there are many other places to eat locally that offer better value for similar food.
