Really nice find, a step up from other places around. Great food, cosy atmosphere and nice service. Had a fab beer garden too which would be great in nicer weather. Had the duck leg dish and the pork belly dish with a kids meal too. Duck was nicely cooked and the dauphinaise potatoes yummy. Pork belly again was fantastic. Wanted to try more! Would definitely recommend and would definately return if we were ever in the area again.

The staff advised of the pub busy due to it being Good Friday. However, very accommodating by letting us come in without booking in such short notice. Arrived at 1700, with our little boy and wanting to order straight away. The staff could not do more for us, coming over to our table promptly, polite friendly, and very fast service. The food was absolutely delicious I have not tasted food like that for a long time in a pub. The atmosphere was very nice with candles on and music playing. Overall brilliant service. Thank you! Keep up the good work it does not go unnoticed.

Pleasantly surprised to see some lights on in a pub on Monday lunchtime at this time of year, decided to call in for a drink and to enjoy a log fire as I remember it. Oh dear, warm enough but the fire was not lit. A couple sitting near the bar obviously doing the pubs admin and a barmaid that had presumably started work there that day. She had no idea about the local beers, served a hot chocolate that consisted of something brown mixed with milk line cleaning fluid, and following our complaint replaced it with a cup of hot milk sans chocolate. There’s a Wetherspoons twenty minutes away, use that, and get what you order at a fraction of the price 24/7 is my advice.

Table for 2, supper after a long journey to Seaton. Ordered the calamari for starter, bit oily and overcooked. My wife liked her goats cheese starter. My main was the hake special which lacked taste and the side order of mixed vegetables were incredibly bland, and lacked seasoning. The room was quite canteen like, and lacked atmosphere.

My husband and I were visiting my MIL over the weekend and came here for lunch. It's been a few years since our last visit during COVID so it was good to visit during normal times again. As I understand it, it's a family run business and it does have a nice, warm family vibe to it. The menu at The Ship is extensive, the food robust and plentiful. My MIL had the cod & chips and my husband had the sausage and mash. What I loved most from this restaurant is that they also offer a 'small bites' menu, for those who don't have a large appetite, like myself. In the past, I've been banned from ordering from the kid's menu and I can't eat a full meal, so I've had to resort to ordering starters as a main as I hate wasting food and I'm not always in the position to doggybag the leftovers. Slowly, I'm beginning to see more and more restaurants do this as establishments recognise that different people have different appetites. I had the smaller version of the breaded chicken escalopes with rosemary & lemon crust. My only minor criticism is that there wasn't enough of that lovely sauce, otherwise it was a gorgeous meal. All in all, great food, great family vibe and great staff. And to the lovely young lady that served us yesterday, thanks for the tip on your jeans from UO, I've found them and ordered a pair.😊

We have used this pub restaurant many times over many years but the decline in service and general organisation needs to be urgently addressed. Firstly, and after 45 mins, two meals arrived but didn’t look quite right, but assured they were correct but when we started to taste them they got taken away as we were now told they were not ours? Secondly - after 1 hour, the correct meals arrived or so we thought - the steak and kidney pie was topped with pastry that looked like a white microwaved lump of soggy pastry, So we asked twice to talk to the. Manager but no one arrived so we asked for the plate to be taken away. The pork chop was ordered with fries but arrived with potatoes instead , No big stuff until we were told everything comes as it says and alternatives arrive separately ??? My wife dislikes boiled potatoes so why put them on the plate ?? All other meals were nice but it took two reminders to bring any cutlery and now over 1 hour wait ! Being familiar with managing staff we told each waitress it is not your fault but please can you etc etc. We now went to pay the bill and instead of expecting an apology from the red headed “manageress” we were told WE were rude to the staff ! We asked which member so that we could apologise but the manageress conveniently could not remember! This was the last straw, eventually a “ proper “ manager arrived., the chef we think, who we believe it the owners son. He removed a bottle of wine from the bill as a gesture to our complaints. All in all, this left a.very bad taste and if only a proper manager had arrived when we asked to speak to one all the complaints could have been avoided. The waitress staff and the guy behind the bar were very apologetic and very pleasant but you can tell when things are not right behind the scenes! The red headed manageress has a very poor customer attitude and cannot handle complaints. The staff maybe new but although willing to please and hard to retain, need to be better trained. As stated previously, we have eaten here many times before but this event has put us off for a very long time. July 24

We had booked a table and so glad we had, as at 7.30 on a Wednesday night the place was busy. But we were served quickly, ordered drinks and then food. We had the garlic mushrooms and prawn cocktail and they were delicious (although they should give out spoons for the creamy garlic sauce). For mains we had a range of dishes, chicken with leek sauce (swapping out the mash for chips), a chicken burger and scampi. All we're piping hot and full of flavour. We'd seen the dessert menu, but we were just too full! Wouldn't hesitate to go back, just make sure you book! Lovely.

Very busy and recommend booking at the weekend The pub is dog friendly, with a beer garden as well. We had to wait for 15 mins after the waitress took our drinks order, then had to ask another member of staff to chase it up, not very good. But the food made up for this, the chicken escalope was delicious, plenty of fries and the creamy leek sauce was amazing, you don't see many pubs putting liver and onions on their menu, so I was pleased it was available, the liver was cooked to perfection, and the smokey bacon just right, the mash was so creamy . The plaice with tiny cold water prawns was one of the freshest and best I've ever had and the accompanying chips the best ever - crunchy and golden on the outside and fluffy inside. We had 'garden' burger which was served on a dry bun with a bit of 'green', the absolute tiniest piece of gherkin and one slice of tomato (not sure if the bread bun was vegan?) ... the guy behind the bar was sympathetic but, even though we're locals, we won't be returning. Every time I ask for this to be done I am given another date by which it will definitely be done and then that date passes. I am one of many who are still fighting to get a refund. I strongly advise NOT to book any events as these will be cancelled and you will not receive your money back.

Came here for a sunday roast as a party of 4, not booked in advance and they accomodated us without batting an eyelid. Great service and absolutely incredible roast. One of the best pub roasts i've had the opportunity of eating. Pork, lamb, beef, gammon served moist with a lovely selection of veg, cauliflower cheese, a giant yorkshire pudding and lashings of gravy. Real "home cooked" vibe, this wasn't your typical deli sliced cold meats served with veg and gravy, you can tell this was cooked with care and everything was served piping hot. Top stuff, will definitely be coming here again.

Four of us made the mistake of booking Sunday lunch at The Redwing Inn. We understood that the Inn is under new ownership and still “transitioning” – in preparation for “relaunching” later in the year. So we were prepared for some disruption – but not for chaos. It started with the wine. No, we couldn’t see their wine list – they didn’t have one. But the waitress said she could tell us what they had. Only, she couldn’t. She went off to check and returned with a scrap of paper with a few wines listed she could read out to us. We picked one, but she had to go off again to check the price. Problems continued with the menu. The main course offerings were beef, turkey or pork – all with Sunday roast trimmings. But nothing else. No fish alternative and no vegetarian option. The waitress – one of the young, personable but clueless staff (not their fault they needed training) – explained that they would have had a vegetarian offering, but their supplier of it had let them down. But, they could substitute extra vegetables for the meat. Two of our party chose the beef. Two of us were slightly luckier in choosing turkey. Four plates arrived quite promptly – with everything piled onto them. No serving dishes to enable us to select what trimmings we wanted – just a plateful each of mushy cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, watery green beans, baked potatoes, a whole carrot, a parsnip, a Yorkshire pudding and a rock-solid ball of stuffing. Two plate-loads topped off with thick wedges of beef and two with equally thick slices of turkey. All swimming in the same flavoured gravy. The turkey was just about edible for a bird of its age – the beef was as tough as the sole of a hiking boot. The request for horseradish sauce resulted in a fruitless search through all their fridges and cupboards. They did, though, eventually manage to find the jar of cranberry sauce. Clearing the plates, the waitress was careful not to ask if everything had been okay – studiously ignoring the pile of hacked at beef left on two of them. With hindsight, our mistake was in not walking out when we saw the menu or, failing that, when the food arrived. Fortunately, we will never have to return to The Redwing. The reality is that the new owners had no business opening the restaurant before it was ready to offer a proper service. With that attitude of mind, they deserve to have no business.
