Popped in here while waiting for our train, we just happened to be working to the engine sheds when we spotted the cafe and stopped there instead. This is a converted school and it is quite quirky inside. There is plenty of seats outside giving a great view of the trains, but we chose to sit inside. We ordered a fruit scone with jam and cream and a cheese scone with butter, you could have chilli jam but I did not want it, we also ordered a coke and cappuccino all for £11. No where is cheap to eat these days but I have to say the scones were the best I have tasted, they were really deep, I was able to cut my cheese scone into 3 slices and butter each one. Both of agreed they were really nice. The cafe did food but I did not really take much notice of what they did, I saw customers getting bacon sandwiches, sausage sandwiches and a breakfast. The three members of staff were all friendly and brought our food to our table, It was not particularly busy but I can imagine it can get busy, The path to the cafe is neatly kept and there is a small seating area near to the station that is nice to seat in and people or train watch. Would recommend this place and would definitely recommend the scones.

To be fair this is a lovely building in a great setting that serves decent food and drink at reasonable prices. That said, the welcome is questionable. On reflection the number of instruction based signs should have been a warning. I visited with my 2 year old grandson who was initially expected to choose his ice cream from the freezer with glass covered over by a blanket to protect the contents from the sun, it was a cloudy day with no sun! The most bizarre behaviour was when we came back from the toilet to find our table cleared away and somebody else sat at it with my rucksack and our coats still on one of the chairs, we had finished but not the point.

Really rude member of staff who needs to work on communication skills. We’d been happily waiting, in the queue, for about ten minutes on bank holiday Sunday with family and small child. Male member of staff came out and said it would be a 30 minute wait - we were happy to wait. Got to the front of the queue to be told we are not taking orders till 2pm - another 25 minutes! Totally get when places are busy but he needs to be much clearer. A 30 minute wait is different to not taking any orders for another 30 minutes. The two ladies serving were pleasant and said ‘he confuses us as well’. We left as other members of the party were not happy with the service (two of whom both work in the same industry in Whitby).

Never felt so unwelcome in anywhere before! Got told to "sit over there" when I said a table for 2 please, menus were virtually thrown at us and waitress not friendly and then had to listen to who I think was the owner, telling someone rudely to "shut the door" Awful coffee (although cake and shortbread we nice) After being recommended to this place by the ticket man on train I wish id read the reviews first and saved myself £12! We spent 3 days in the area and this is the only bad review, everywhere else was really welcoming.

We love Grosmont and have visited the Old School Coffee Shop on several different occasions over the last few years. The setting and the food are beautiful. Regrettably the service was very mixed on our recent visit. We were welcomed warmly with a friendly smile by one member of staff when we arrived which was lovely. We were sitting outside and went in to order lunch. I was asked what my table number was, but I had forgotten to make a note of it. Bearing in mind we were the only people outside at this point and there was one gentleman behind me who had just come to order. I asked my son to get our table number; a 10 second job if that. However I was asked to leave the one deep queue to go and get my table number by a different straight faced lady who was serving. and then rejoin the queue. I actually felt like I was at school. Appropriate really, bearing in mind the coffee shop is based in an old school. Really guys? I returned to the queue to be met by the friendly server who said she knew where I was sat. The fact that this lady was pleasant meant I ordered coffee and cake. I took my money elsewhere for lunch. Such a shame and very disappointed. Customer service can make or break a business regardless of how good the food or coffee are.

Lovely quirky coffee shop. Lovely food. Great coffee. But not very nice when there’s you, the owners, and another customer who they’re friendly with, and they’re having a loud conversation across the room. Which has happened to us the last two or three visits; better therefore when it’s busier with a general hubbub. Would have been back for lunch today were it not for this.

What a lovely building! Outside a bucket full of soapy water and soft bristled brush for cleaning muddy boots a nice touch. Neat, clearly written signs, friendly welcome, lovely spacious indoors with a log burning stove warming the room. The freshly made Hummingbird Cake was delightfully moist and had wonderful flavour, strongly recommended!! Owners were so helpful when we asked about walks to take with our dog to see local waterfalls. Gave us tips to avoid congested areas and told us the best places to park too. Cant beat local knowledge! We loved our visit to the Old School Coffee Shop. Very welcoming, great quality food and drinks available, clean, spacious but cosy premises. Thank you for your welcome and advice for the walk to the Falling Foss.

Cafe is a short distance off the high street - between the level crossing and the engine sheds. Inside and outside seating and the interior design is a bit quirky but in a good way. Had two wonderful bacon butties and a good pot of tea. Let down by a very burnt Latte and perception was that the coffee was of a lower quality than say Botham's or Mr Coopers Coffee house in Whiby. No staff issues.

After walking here from nearby Egton Bridge, we stopped here for a well earned rest and drink. Having been here in the summer, and just having a drink, we opted for drinks and cakes. Lovely location, great views of the railway and passing steam trains, we sat outside in the autumn sunshine and enjoyed a slice of coffee and walnut cake and carrot cake, with coffee for husband and pink lemonade for me. Friendly staff, great food and drinks and good views.

This place is great entertainment if you want to watch the proprietor abusing his customers. Don't queue where the board is saying wait here to be seated, you'll get a right earful. Don't spend too long eating or drinking, you'll be evicted, don't ask how much something costs, you'll get a tirade on what margins are made.... I enjoyed the banter, eat people like him for breakfast, but if you're of a nervous disposition try any other cafe or fasting. 😅

Nice food but very unpleasant staff and not child friendly at all which is a shame as why shouldn’t children experience the beauty of the area and the railway. The rude man made a comment about ‘the mess this child had left!’. There was little mess as I had got down on my hands and knees to clean up the few crumbs my toddler had made. Also my little boy has dietary needs so I bring a packed lunch for him and yes we had brought food from the establishment so not like we hadn’t bought anything from there. My little boy had a couple of little snack custard pots which he had eaten and I left the couple of small empty pots on my plate when we had finished so hardly a mess at but clearly was an issue. Definitely avoid if you have children! Not child friendly at all and not that pleasant to the adults either!

Our food was fine and average price so I'll skip that part. It was the facilities that were sadly lacking.Only one safely working highchair available and a unisex toilet which is fine in itself, however, no baby change space available. The toilet was mucky with a wet floor all over. No mat, table, chair or paper towels were provided so my baby had to lie on the dirty cold floor while I changed her (she can't fit on my knee anymore and I had to kneel on the dirty floor myself). The only bin said 'No nappies. Thanks' and had there been anywhere else to change my baby I would have but it was cold and I couldn't do it outside.I should not have to make excuses for needing to safely change my baby, it is pretty basic to expect somewhere you can change your baby while you're eating out. It is not always possible or fair to make your child wait in a dirty nappy while you finish up your food and go somewhere else, especially when everyone else in the family's toileting needs are catered for by a cafe.Had I known it would be like that I would not have gone in the cafe. I've rarely felt so unwelcome.

We visited this charming cafe for lunch, seating outside and in. The sandwiches were terrific and can strongly recommend this place.

How does this coffee shop survive with such rude and unpleasant staff? We stopped for coffee and cake and what a mistake we made. The chap was aggressive and insulting, the woman deeply unpleasant. Not a nice place

Glad someone on the station told us about the Old School as I don’t think we would have found it otherwise and what a disappointment that would have been. 2 bacon rolls, I ham sandwich and 1 huge bowl of Thai courgette, pea and coconut soup, all 5*. Head towards the tunnel and the sheds and you will find it on the left just before the tunnel. Don’t miss it if in Grosmont, you will not be disappointed.

Interesting room with lots to look at, boxes of Trivia Questions on the tables to keep you entertained. Not a wide range of food but what there was was very good. We had tea/coffee and cakes. Would certainly go back.

A great little find at the end of the Beck Hole to Grosmont walk. Kids loved the little quizzes on the table. Great food and friendly staff. Location was great for kids and adults to see the trains.

It would have been nice after a long walk to be greeted at this establishment with warm smiles and quality drink and food. Unfortunately we were greeted with hostility, an irritable manager and average drinks. Hopefully others does not experience this Salty service.

We visited as we were staying in Grosmont walking the Coast2coast. The interior is well designed and decorated tastefully, with character. The owners, both former award winning restauranteur's know what they are about and the cooking and baking are both excellent. The seating area outside is ideal for train spotting whilst we took advantage of the wood burning stove inside as it was a cool day. Very happy to recommend and will visit again soon.

We have been coming up to the NYMR for several years, but for some reason never really noticed the coffee house before! So glad we did this time.

Went today with my wife mother in law and father in law for mother’s day lunch. Had walked from Goathland and we were ready for lunch. My father in law ordered for him and mother in law paid no problem. We were ordering separately next in line when a blonde fiftyish woman barked from the back no more savoury food. My wife explained to the very pleasant waitress that half our party had ordered and this would split us up. But fifty something woman just barked go to the pub. Not for instance I’m so sorry but Just go to the pub. When I said this is disgraceful she answered I’m not a magician. I’m sure you had a bad day. I don’t know why you did what you did but you upset my wife who felt she had been unable to deliver a nice mothers day to her mum. So we had a nice lunch in the pub with our parents eating in your garden. I do this walk a lot. Would not spend any money in your establishment now. You didn’t explain that there was a problem just go to the pub. I Hope you’re proud.

We arrived here after a long walk and were warmly greeted. we ordered tea and Victoria sponge which was as light as a feather, very tasty and full of fresh fruit as well as jam and just enough butter icing to hold it together. It was a very generous portion and I enjoyed every mouthful. I am a big fan of Victoria sponge and have eaten a great deal of it in my 67 years but this was the best ever by a long chalk.

An amazing find after a long walk, the Old School Coffee shop offered beautiful coffee, a wonderful selection of homemade cakes and slices and savoury dishes to tempt any hungry soul! Its been a while since I visited this cafe but it appears to have undergone a complete transformation and is well worth a visit - so glad I found it once again!!

Fantastic little cafe, great looking food and a perfect setting. I had a black coffee which was lovely and my fiancée some tea. The carrot cake is absolutely unbelievable, I would go back purely for this!

First visit. First impression delightful location. Extremely poor / processed quality food (not uncommon with many cafes/tea shops). Very small slice of cake and eclair with equally small dollop ice cream, cup of tea and mug coffee cost £12.70. As with the venue people seem nice. Accept dogs (which is great). Suggest review and improve quality of food and presentation. Leaving a used cigarette ashtray on table not indicative of professional service.

We are staying locally a d wish we had found this pub earlier in the week. A warm welcome a d great food. My husband had chicken pie and i had the sea bass. Good portions, well cooked and piping hot. We had bread and butter pudding and rice pudding afterwards. Again both excellent 👌.

My wife uses a walker. We had never been to the Deli before so were unsure how to proceed. The staff completely ignored us. It was as if we were not there, or invisible. Even as we walked out of the Deli, no staff member offered any acknowledgement of us!

Gorgeous place to come to and is always on our list as a ' must go to'when we are in Filey. Beautiful setting and everything here is really delicious. The lemon meringue tart and coffee cake are to die for. It's lovely sitting outside and enjoying the sunshine. Sadly it was raining today and as we have a dog we couldn't go in, there was some seating under a canopy for the ice creams but sadly for us just a bit too chilly to sit out. It is cash only so that is something to always remember when visiting.

I booked this venue for my son's 40th birthday. Nothing was too much trouble, and they even offered to step in when we didn't think the disco was going to come! Lovey and clean, excellent room.
