Just had a really enjoyable pre-Christmas festive lunch with family and friends. Menu was varied and the food well cooked and tasty. Particularly good vegetarian option which is not always the case in local restaurants. Each member of our group had a good time as the setting is relaxed and comfortable and the service excellent thanks to Mary and Oscar. Great value and we shall be coming next year for more of the same.

This is no ordinary garden centre cafe. The food is superb whether it's a cake to accompany your coffee, a lunchtime bagutte, afternoon tea or a three course Christmas dinner. We regularly visit with friends and are never disappointed. Our three course Christmas lunch from a varied menu was divine. The fish starter and the pate were top notch and served swiftly with a smile. Followed by 2 beef wellingtons which melted in the mouth and two delicious turkey roasts served with lots of vegetables. Our deserts were a trio of delicious brandy snaps, éclairs and macarons. Washed down with a bottle of wine. Tell me where you can get such a fabulous meal locally made with such care and passion? Top marks to James and his team.

I have visited here twice in the last 3 months. Once for tea and cake. I had an issue with the tea, it was luke warm and the tea would not infuse, also the tea loose leaves were not enough and the tea was tasteless and dish watery. Also the amount of water they add to the teapot, is not sufficient to infuse the loose tea. Care needs to be taken to add enough water to the teapot in the first place!I asked to have it change, which they did do, but I was made to feel awkward about it. The shortbread was a generous size and tasted fine. I visited again for lunch. I asked if I could please have a cheddar cheese and tomato or cheese and onion toasted sandwich as I am veggie and dislike vegan cheese. Vegan cheese is tasteless and is offered to veggies like it the answer to a ‘problem’ client. Vegan cheese is very bad for you and good old cheddar is a much better choice. The young chap that served us was more than happy to assist. I said I was happy to pay whatever he wished to charge me. I suggested charging me the price of the cheese and ham, which would have been in the favour of the Yew tree as tomato/onion as ingredients are much cheaper than ham. He was more than happy to accommodate my minor change. However he said he would just check with the chef. The chef told him in no uncertain terms that he would not allow any changes and he would only make what’s on the menu. We heard what he said and the way he spoke to the young chap. Personally he was very aggressive and unpleasant. The young chap was embarrassed and highly apologetic. He offered lots of other things. I declined as I felt uneasy ordering food from an angry, middle aged , disinterested catering chef, that might be disingenuous to a client. My request was reasonable. Independents have an opportunity to set far better standards than multi national places that are opening everywhere. Being an independent allows you to offer a different level of service from a national business. What is happening in the UK? If you don’t want to work in hospitality or catering, please re-train or find a job that makes you feel good. Taking it out on hard working young staff and customers is just unacceptable and unprofessional. You should be setting an example. Poor show Yew tree. Thank you.

Stopped in for brunch. Ordered x2 teas and asked for extra hot water as tea bag in pots usually become too strong. Was told we can’t have hot water without being charged but could have a top up if the tea was strong, which is was. So returned to the counter to be told by another member top ups weren’t allowed, and racetracks hot water is the same as getting a free cup of tea. WTF!! Odd thing is we’ve been many times and got water was never an issue before. Every other cafe/tearoom in the area will always provide extra hot water either as a matter of course or on request. To be fair this seemed to be a policy made up by the kids they had serving. For the prices charged I’m not sure why a small pot of hot water with tea is such an issue but they seem to think it’s worth losing custom over. There are far more customer centric places to dine in the area and I would suggest unless you have a lottery win steer clear!

Went here for a brief coffee and a cake after a nearby walk. left here £36 lighter for 2 adults 3 kids. Coffee and cake was nice but each cake slice was £4.85, yes £4.85!!!!! my daughter had the worlds smallest hot chocolate for £3.50, why on earth it was not the same size cup as the coffees I don't know. I understand that these places are there to make a profit but this just seemed greedy. Based on the clientele I assume that this place thrives on serving the affluent local boomer retirees that were abundant in the cafe who probably have failing eyesight and cant read the prices. I love millionaire shortbread but refused to pay £4.50 for a slice so sat watching my kids eat their inheritance away. £4.85!!!!!!!!!! OMG
