Booked my parents in for 2 week stay after seeing reviews and photos, to say I was embarrassed was an understatement. Room serviced only twice in the 2 weeks, leaking roof which wasn’t fixed till middle of 2nd week. The continental breakfast that was in the room on arrival was still there on departure, out of date. The room was of poor standard and the exterior was dirty nothing like the photo’s. I am still trying to work out what the £952 was actually for. There were other issues as well but safe to say I will not be booking them in next year for their visit.

About 20 of us from the Northallerton u3a Pub lunch group came here on Friday 26-Jun-23 for lunch. They catered for us very well and the food was excellent. I had pan fried mussels as a starter and a plain paramo with chips and onion rings. All good. My wife had the lamb shank and the cheesecake. The rest of the menu was excellent too. Thoroughly recommend!!

Lovely pub , however when ordering over the phone for a takeaway Martin was great helpful but the chef was not helpful he wanted to know if we wanted it the same day went through what he could do like a train! Got the food which was lovely , went for drinks the other night a young girl went to the bar approx 7-20pm asked if she could order chips and the chef clearly didn’t want to make them, he will be the downfall of a lovely pub his attitude is just not right at all , how many people have decided not to go back or order … is this worth risking ?

our first visit and it won't be our last. Lovely, traditional pub, served by (we think) the landlord, and today's new starter barman, both very friendly. Both had the roast pork, served with additional dish of vegetables, followed by jam sponge and custard, and a caramel cheesecake. Everything was delicious, yes we would go again.

Came here for a steak as we like trying to find hidden gems with great steaks. Not the best we have had and waited a while for it to come also, not sure why as there were only 2 tables occupied. Prices weren’t too bad and parking is over the busy road. Probably won’t return

Went here with 3 friends after work. Seated and served with drinks quickly. Too many things on the menu that I wanted! There was a special deal on 2 courses for £9.00. Ate off the normal menu. I had cajun chicken pizza, another friend had paramo and the final 2 had steak pie. The steak pie came with either mash or chips and also veg. My friends said it was beautiful and the steak was in huge lumps and really tender. The chicken paramo was HUGE!!! Bigger than my friend. My pizza was massive and very tasty. 2 of us had dessert and again these were huge. I ended up taking half if each dessert home for my husband. with a drink each the bill was around £20.00 per person. Great service as well. Highly recommended but make sure you don't eat for a week before hand.

Having lived a few miles away for a number of years, we felt it was time to give The Old royal George a try for sunday lunch and we were not disappointed, we all had the silverside roast which was beautifully cooked and so tender it was falling apart off the fork, their mashed potato was to me, absolutely perfect, the Yorkshire pud was on the mark too, wasn't too keen on the roast potatoes but the other veg was spot on. The level of service is comparable to some of the high end restaurants I've been to which in a village pub is excellent news, the building itself appears to have been an old coaching inn which has been added to and added to over the years, this is reflected in the fact that the pub is far deeper off the road than the roadside frontage hints at.Judging by the high standard of food and that they also do Bed and Breakfast from £65/night, this lovely pub on the road between Leeming Bar and Northallerton would be an ideal base from which to explore both the North Yorkshire moors and the northern pennines area of outstanding natural beauty.

Four of us went for Sunday Lunch, what a great treat, it was one of the best Sunday lunches we have had in a long time. We have been in some post restaurants and had to send the meat back! But this lunch was exceptional. I sent our compliments to the chef. We did not have a desert just because the meal was so good we couldn’t eat any more. Service was good. The river near by had closed the road but people had driven from Catterick to get to there , and one of our party was also from Catterick. We recommend the Royal George it was great. Well done.

We had the small lamb and beef Sunday dinner and also ordered a kids lamb. The only fault I could find is that the roast potatoes could have done with being hotter. Everything else was spot on. Even down to the sweets they brought my niece when they brought us mints after the dinner. Such a lovely touch. At £30 for the three of us including drinks. We had planned to go to the New Inn at Thrintoft but it was closed so this was the nearest choice. It's a strange little pub - very dated. However we all enjoyed the food. We had mains and deserts - good size portions and good value. The chips were proper home made chips and were yummy. The one thing I didn't like was at the end when we were paying the bill, the landlady was watching us closely almost as if she didn't trust us. It felt a bit unsettling. But we would come back again.

A lunchtime birthday meal that was just spot on! We ate in the cosy snug, the much larger bar was showing a World Cup football match. The menu was classic pub grub, the very helpful staff offered to tailor many of the choices to suit my vegetarian wife (including offering to bake a veggie pie from scratch!!). Very much appreciated. Quality of our food was excellent, needless to say the service was even better! We declined the dessert menu as we were ‘full to busting’ from the ample portions of fish & chips and veggie frittata. We will return, maybe for a B & B stay?

My father has recently moved into the area so we popped into this pub for a quick drink after visiting him. My husband caught sight of a steak being brought out to a couple who were eating there and we decided to stay and eat. There were no vegetarian options on the menu which proved awkward for me. Jamie, the chef, overheard me asking if there was anything vegetarian available at all. He was wonderfully friendly, sat at our table and offered to cook me any dish I would like. He had various meat replacement products available if required, however, we settled on a vegetable curry. The curry was the best I've had in a very long time..a huge portion with rice and naan bread, wonderfully spicy with huge chunks of vegetables. If you are vegetarian, vegan or require gluten free/dairy free meals, speak to the chef and he will come up with a great meal that's suitable and tasty. Staff and customers were friendly, food was great and I would happily recommend this pub to anybody. Thanks Jamie! (Incidentally, my husband's steak was great too!)

There were 21 of us. Promised bread rolls and got sliced bread. Each type of main course was served separately without the veg. So by the time I got my plate of turkey the people having fish had eaten theirs to prevent it getting cold. The meats were served without gravy, it came later with the veg. Too late. Seems wrong to have the vegafter the meat! The cranberry sauce arrived when everyone had finished. Sprouts were half over and half underdone. I cut into a roast potato and it bounced off my plate onto someone else’s. 1 person got a slice of apple pie swimming in custard and I got 1 spoon of custard for the Xmas pud. The pastry was not fully baked on the lid of the mince pie. I took it home to show my daughter who is a check. Waitress in a bad mood! So all in all a very poor Christmas meal.

We had had Sunday lunch here and my husband opted to have his birthday celebration here with the family so there were seven of us for dinner. We ordered two mixed grills and the rest of us had different dishes. The place wasn't very busy and we ordered drinks and waited for our meal, we ordered more drinks and waited. We actually waited for an hour for our meals. We were eventually ushered into the restaurant which was much cooler than the bar. The food arrived and you couldn't complain about the portion sizes which were huge, so much so they were probably too big. My husband had the mixed grill which could have fed the whole table. There was so much food on the plate that it was quite off putting. Probably the best looking meals on the table were the bacon chops and the steak from the specials board. I had the bacon and chicken linguini but it was really too big and would have served three people. My husband's portion was so large we brought the meat home for the cats. There was so much meat it could have done for at least another two meals. We wee all too full for pudding but i had rang the restaurant and asked them make a birthday cake which they did, which was a really nice touch. Staff were friendly and helpful. The place is not for me. It is bursting at the seams with nick nacks and odd ornaments, none of which seem to match. My husband says it is has not changed for 30 odd years. The bill was very reasonable.

Great atmosphere in the pub and restaurant. Breakfast cooked to order and no discrimination for not wanting black pudding! ha ha I would have given 5 star rating if there had been a suitcase stand in the room, a more solid toilet seat and a warning on the menu of the huge portions but these are such small things and are meant only to give constructive advice (as I have already emailed to the proprietors). thank you for a super weekend.

This place is never going to hold a Michelin Star, but don't let that put you off. Well cooked homely honest food, at a cost that will not break the bank and a quantity that will leave you requiring a Christmas nap. It is 'traditional only' on Sundays, which is no issue, but if I'd like a sausage for a four year old instead of your usual roast meat, I'm happy to wait while you pull one out of the freezer. If a pint of ale and value for money, in traditional English pub/restaurant is what you're after, this is a good starter for 10. We'll be giving steak night a bash this week. I hope they have a 20 oz in, I'm planning to be hungry. I'm very particular how it's cooked though.

We were looking for somewhere with character and found it here in abundance. Such a warm welcome which you only get from a family run pub. The food was amazing. After our starters of garlic mushrooms and deep fried cheese, I had the largest lamb shank in history which fell of the bone before it even caught sight of my knife and my partner had the fillet steak and prawns, which he said was equally tender. The accompanying side dishes would have been a meal on their own! I have it on good authority, from him indoors, that the local beers were amazing. We had chosen to stay the night in the double room which again had plenty of character and was clean and fresh. No set breakfast time - we were just asked what time we wanted it - and it was superb. Jamie, the chef, spent the meal chatting with us, along with his mum, stepdad and partner and we couldn't have been made to feel more welcome. We will definitely be back sooner, rather than later, and would advise anyone wanting a lovely country pub, to give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

We have been here twice in the last 3 months and all I can say is amazing, amazing, amazing. Great food, plenty of local ales and cute traditional Yorkshire pub. The portion size is fantastic value for money and the food is perfect. I had the steak pie last time and it was melt-in-your-mouth good! Highly recommend.

Lovely room, spotlessly clean, perfect. The food is absolutely scrummy and fantastic value (14oz steak with giant homemade onion rings and homemade chips at less than £15!) The food is the best for miles - garlic mushroom starter is incredible.Staff are wonderful, friendly and nothing is too much trouble, I will always stay here when I visit Northallerton, cannot recommend it highly enough.

I was shocked to experience such poor service in what is clearly a highly rated pub normally. We were large family group on a quiet night. We booked in advance so would have expected some effort and perhaps a welcome. The waiting staff were bad tempered and we felt like we weren't wanted despite being a large group. Food was OK but nothing special. Large portions of overcooked good doesn't make up for lack of welcome or quality. The pudding I had was a 1970's style pud a mother would serve. Did NOT enjoy the experience and wouldn't return. This pub needs to remember that customer service matters. We waited ages to be served and I was shocked by how unfriendly this place was given the reviews. I hope it was a bad night but I won't return to find out

My family had been here before and recommended the food. Judging by the positive experiences of other reviews I've seen here I can only assume we went on a night when the chef was off or there was a problem in the kitchen. There were a few people in the bar eating, but we were the only people in the restaurant so I saw no reason for the overly excessive wait we had throughout the evening. The menu does say food is cooked fresh so there will be a wait at busy times, but they certainly weren't busy the night we went. We didn't bother with starters, as we'd been told the meal portions were very generous. The menu is varied and extensive, with all the pub grub favourites and more. I had a large scampi and chips. We'd waited what felt like ages before someone came to take our order and after that we waited over an hour before any food arrived. There were 9 of us in the party so we expected some delay but this was excessive. At times staff wandered through, looking at us but generally ignored us. There was no atmosphere in the restaurant and if we'd been served in half the time it actually took we still wouldn't have felt rushed. My meal was a generous portion, however the scampi was over cooked so that the outer coating was very dark, very dry and tough. The chips were also over cooked and again dry and tough. Some of the group enjoyed their pasta dishes so I put mine down to a glitch in the kitchen. Once finished there was another ridiculous wait to order and then receive desserts. I was pleased with my sponge pudding. Other dishes were much less satisfactory. Technically 2 shop bought meringues covered in strawberry ice-cream sauce and surrounded by grapes could be called a fresh fruit meringue. However it's a very disappointing one. Over all the whole experience was unpleasant and the lack of attention paid by the staff left us with the feeling we were an inconvenience. I hope this is a one off experience and that other people continue to enjoy the Old Royal George. However I don't think we'll be back to try again.

Six of us ate at tgh Royal George on Christmas Day. We had pre-ordered from an extensive menu a couple of weeks before. Despite being fully booked we were 'squeezed in' and our requirement for earlier service due to work commitments was met with a smile.. The service was prompt, efficient and cheerful and the food superb. I have eaten in five star restaurants whose food did not match up to tThe Geotge. I had fillet of beef, which was perfect, my wife enjoyed roast duck and betwen the six of us we pretty well covered the menue. All agreed with my assessment./ We shall most certainly be back mext Christmas - and at other times throughout the coming year. Warmest thank to Neil, Shirley and Chef Jaimie!

We went to this pub with some locals, Sandy and Dave, at their insistence, that it was the only place to go! They were right-from the owners and owner/chef and waitress, this pub did not disappoint! Lovely welcoming people and the food was so delicious! And so plentiful that it was absurd how large the portions are, but so tasty that you are glad they are so ample! We all had something diffeent and it was all delicious-the chef is so good there's no way one could get a bad meal here - don't miss it! And when you go, tell Neil that his friends from America said "cheerio"!

We popped in again today, on this damp misty day, to find a warm welcome. Really tasty fresh cooked food, really large portions and real pototo chips. Classic old style pub with good home cooked food. Every reasonable prices. Well done to the owners.

Had a Sunday lunch early evening, went for the large and it was ! Fresh veg and a creamy leek dish. Lovely home made yorkshire puds. Also had a delicious home made desert and couldn't bend in the middle! The restaurant is a little dated looking but the lunch outweighs the surroundings.

Been here a few times now as my boyfriend really likes it but I'm still unsure about it. Always smells like old ladies. Too dark. Food ok. Nothing special. Feels like something could be better about it. Would like to see a normal menu in a Sunday rather than Sunday roasts. Also would like to see chicken as think it the most popular.

I have known the Old Royal George for some years. The food has never been less than excellent. The Friday Fis is always huge and perfectly cooked. The portions are generous = in fact if you want two courses I'd suggest Starter and Sweet!I thoroughly recommend this Pub/Restaurant.

Came here for a last minute meal out while in town with my partner and remembered it being lovely as always. My partner got the chicken Caesar salad and looked like a main meal!! Followed by steak. Safe to say we both could not move by end of evening and was desperate to get home to lay on sofa! Service can be slow but then it was a Saturday night. You have to be absolutely starving to come here! But really tasty grub!

Lovely welcoming atmosphere and staff are always cheerful friendly...nothing is too much trouble. After a lovely evening we retired to the middle room. We have just returned from a fabulous relaxing weekend spent at The Old Royal George, Morton on Swale. We stayed in their newly opened accommodation. Beautiful rooms, a real treat. We had the most delicious breakfasts and dinners. Lovely Sunday lunch on Mothers Day. The staff are attentive and professional. We loved the Steak pie we had on Saturday night. Passed this place twice a week for the last fifteen years, then a month ago decided to go there for my birthday lunch. Wonderful, I had lamb shank it was cooked to perfection, my husband had scampi which he really enjoyed. Everything about the place was warm ,welcoming and friendly, including the staff. Just been back today and had the most gorgeous fish and chips ever. Beautiful crispy batter and chunky chips £12.00 for two. Couldn`t get any better. We will be regular diners from now on.

We went here last night for my birthday meal -my daughter had been the previous week and had recommended it to me.It's like a tardis -looks tiny from the outside but such a big cosy room inside -very welcoming, I had the belly pork (specials board) with honey and mustard -huge chunky chips -biggest I've seen -and veg. Amazing value. Husband had the steak (2 for £20 on a Thurs) and wasn't disappointed -cooked to perfection. Daughter had the hunters chicken -huge portion and amazing again. Restaurant was very quiet with only one other table being used (7pm on a thurs). Amazing value and huge portions -we will be back soon.

Have passed this building roughly 100 times a year for nearly 20 years and only been in once, for a function. However, had heard that their steaks and fish were excellent but a neighbour, of the business, advised that their value lunches were really special, and only £5.50 for three courses Tuesday-Friday. Today to escape the snow we called in about 2pm ( Kitchen open till 2.30pm) and were greeted by 'mine host' in the friendliest of manners and shown to the dining room where it was about 50% occupied. We had soup starters, one fish pie and a plate of barbecued pork, both very large portions with lots of fresh vegetables....before leaving we were offered a complimentary tea or coffee. We will return as the value and quality exceeded the cost....

I have been here for the last 3 weeks on business for 2 nights a week, still 3 weeks to go 😀 Lovely welcome by everyone who has been on reception on all my visits, very helpful, friendly and they go that extra mile to help. The rooms I've stayed in so far are ( 2-10 and 31) which were very clean, cosy and well presented with everything you needed, Iron, hairdryer and tea and coffee facilities. The only little issue was the shower door rollers kept coming loose, just life cycle replacement needs attention at some point. I could not fault any of the cleaning at all and that's very rare for me due to being a cleaning trainer for the NHS, hotels, schools and offices for 20 years. I meet some of the cleaning first thing on the morning and they were also very polite and always smiling. The bar area was comfortable, clean, all the staff are friendly and the food in the restaurant-bar is excellent, large portions, presented beautifully and very tasty...... 😋 I didn't have the breakfast , so i can't comment on that... Thank you so much for making me feel welcome, especially when I'm here on my own. I will miss coming here when my business in Northallerton comes to an end 😊

Great food, super service and staff however they really need to address the fly problem. I’ve been twice recently and both times been bothered by a number of small annoying flies buzzing around my food. It’s really not good enough and clearly a long standing issue as previous reviews also highlight. The problem is spoiling an otherwise fantastic restaurant, our food was delicious, and apart from swatting the little blighters we had a great evening.

Latte coffee (with extra shot) allegedly large but certainly only medium, small piece of mass produced poor quality cake....£9.05 !!!!! Massively over priced. Waited to be seated and waited to give my order while the member of staff who should have been serving me filled in her paperwork and chatted with staff. My coffee when it arrived was covered in coffee grounds and was undrinkable. I took it back and the woman who served me was very polite apologised and served me quickly with another one. I must say she was the ONLY staff member who showed any customer care at all. If you want over priced drinks and cake along with a poor attitude from staff then pay them a visit. Otherwise I suggest giving them a wide berth!!

Visited as a couple 7 March. We were staying in the hotel. Ambience was good. The eating area could perhaps do with a bit of updating but it is fine. Menu is a mix of pub classics and more adventurous dishes. I had one of the latter as a starter, Lamb Tagine Roll with harissa mayo and smoked aubergine purée. Very good. The roll had chunks of lamb and the mayo had a kick. Tasted and presented very well. I had steak and ale pie for main. Appeared home made with real chips. Again very good Mrs W had the pork belly which she enjoyed too. We had a very nice bottle of NZ Sav Blanc as well. Very good value.
