We stayed in Hawkchurch for the week and visited The Old Inn on several occasions. It is a lovely friendly place and very dog friendly and welcoming. The food is fantastic but it is the atmosphere that makes it so special. Everyone was so nice and I can honestly say I have never been in such a lovely pub. Thank you for making our holiday so special. (It made up for the poor weather) We will be back!

My wife and I passed this pub/inn on the way to Hawkchurch spa resort, in the evening we went back and had a drink in there, what a fabulous and warm welcome we had, there were some regulars in there and as we walked in we every one was pleasant and welcoming, we returned the next evening and when we walked in you could see they were setting up for some sort of occasion, turned out they were having a Burns night, the landlady asked if we were part of the party that had booked, (which we wasn't) as she was fully booked, although I informed her we were not, she said come in and I'll sort you out a table, again we were made to feel very welcome and she went out of her way to make sure we enjoyed our visit, on our experience, we cannot recommend enough a visit here, although we didn't eat there, many other couples and families did and next time we will.

Staying nearby so called in here for an evening meal. Pub is in the quiet & lovely village of Hawkchurch and from appearance to atmosphere is very much a traditional village pub. Early”ish” when we arrived so not very full. Made to feel very welcome though. Good selection of drinks available & a nice seating area. Food menu is fairly comprehensive & what you’d expect. Food was okay, nothing amazing. But would happily revisit.

Place was nice enough although staff and food let it down. The two young workers (one male and one female were great) however the two older who I assumed were the managers/owners were useless. As someone who has spent ten years in restaurant management I know you can ruin your reputation for being miserable. When asked if uou could cook some sausages for dogs (which we would pay for) the chef said no simply because they couldn't be bothered to be helpful. This place needs training In service otherwise its going to go downhill fast. The food was wetherspoons standard but double the price. Shame as it could be a success otherwise.

We stayed at the Old Inn and could not fault it. Jean and Paul couldn’t have been more welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The family room was perfect for us - spotlessly clean with comfy beds. The decor was very homely and had a large tv. And not forgetting the adorable ‘George’ who stole our hearts (the pubs gorgeous Golden Retriever) The breakfast (both continental and full English) were exceptional as we both our evening meals. The 400 year old pub had such character and the church opposite (1000 years old) was beautiful. We chose the accommodation as we wanted to explore the Jurassic coastline and we managed to find some great fossils at Charmouth Beach. I would highly recommend and we hope to go back one day.

We visited The Old Inn whilst staying at Hawkchurch Resort and Spa and would definitely recommend a visit. We chose a Sharing Platter to start and it was lovely, plenty for 2 adults and a teenager. My husband had the homemade chicken korma for his main which was packed with chicken and had a lovely, rich flavour. Scampi, chunky chips & peas for myself, so many chips I gave some to my husband. Our daughter had the homemade beefburger, equally delicious. Excellent value for money. Having eaten in the Bistro at Hawkchurch the previous night, it was no comparison to The Old Inn.

A pleasant pub with a good menu. We both opted for the lamb (which was very good) and were told there would be a bit of a wait. However, we felt that 40 minutes to wait for lamb to be cooked was rather excessive and it was frustrating to be kept waiting so long. Had they said it would be this long, we would have had something else.

I don’t normally write reviews but yet always read and go by them !!After visiting this family friendly pub in a nice little village I knew I had to leave a review. I first enquired about a reservation for Thursday night but they were fully booked but they replied with an offer for a table the following night which I thought was very nice of them, so I agreed and am very pleased I did !!. We arrived and was greeted very nicely. The options on the specials board was I thought very good and a lot to choose from. Now I’m not a professional chef or food critic but I love my food and cooking !!. One of the specials on the board was rack of lamp with dauphinois potatoes which my girlfriend loves, as the very nice lady came to take our order she overheard us talking about the options to have for dinner that when my partner asked for the steak she did say that she could have the dauphinois with it rather than the chips that was on the menu. My partner was very happy with this and asked if that was possible and the response was “ we can do what ever you want !!” Now this to me is music to my ears !! Service was a++ and very quick and smooth !! But not too quick !! Wasn’t rushed at all which in a pub/restaurant nobody every wants but also doesn’t like a slow service which on a Friday is hard to keep up with. The food was cooked to perfection and the service was brilliant. If you are in the area and are looking for a nice place to eat then please visit here !!

Even though the place was busy, service was excellent and attentive without being obtrusive. The fish wash beautifully cooked and the batter light, crispy and delicious. Indeed, all our meals drew high praise and the portions were generous. We were staying in the quaint little village of Hawkchurch for a week so a visit to the local pub for dinner one evening seemed a good idea. It's a nice enough pub with friendly staff and a good range of local ales. But the food is a bit of a let down to be honest. It's pretty standard pub fare. Most of what our group of ten had was ok but some of it - most notably the pasta dishes - was very poor. Not exactly what I'd call good home cooked food. If you're staying nearby, pop in for a beer but skip the food.

Good value food that you don't have to wait ages for. The bar maid was very busy working on her own,all the tables were full and she didn't have a moment to stand still but she didn't leave us waiting for service at any time and was very pleasant too! It's not gourmet food but worth a visit.

excellent food, good pub prices, very friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. The landlord gave me a tour of the accommodation, a little basic but I imagine a friendly place to stay with good ales and food on tap.

We came to this place without looking at the reviews. Like stated as a previous reviewer commented, from outside it looked like "what the hell are we doing" , and "where do we park" so we drove past and saw a sign saying "Old Inn Parking". We followed the signs, passed the village hall into a track and went to the back car park which gave us a signed entrance to the pub.The landlord made us very welcome and said a table would be available for us within five minutes - which it was. The menu was small on the specials board, but there was many other options to choose from the normal menu, but what was served was superb. I know the landlord has problems catering for large numbers with no notice, so it is advised to book in advance. We were certainly made welcome and felt we were treated as a special and personal customer, not as a business to take your money. It was worth coming to, and recommended. The landlord tries hard to please and does his best. He works hard, so consider this when coming without booking. Like us, we asked if he had a table available, which wasn't at the time, but he said to us there would be one shortly and to take a seat and would call us over as soon as it became available. To summarise, the experience was worth waiting for.

This is a village pub with a good big easy access car park. The menu is poor mostly bought in products I suspect the freezer van delivers regularly. There is a very poor selection of food on offer and no surprise dishes. In fairness there were a lot of Christmas meals going on and the staff were under pressure. But the service was very rushed and a lack of charm in evidence.

We went for a meal and it was very unimpressive. My sister had a pie that had a very soggy crust. Veggies were microwaved, all in all it was mediocre to easy the leasdt. We decided not to finish the food on our plate. The owner was trying to be larger than life, which if you like that is fine, if not it could be rather annoying. Wouldn't go back for food, but OK for a drink as the view and setting is nice

2 visits to this pub on a recent local stay and each time the food was lovely. The landlord made us feel welcome and was a excellent host although I can imagine that some people would take his manner the wrong way but we found him very friendly. On the Monday night the landlord was in the kitchen and a excellent job he made of our meals the barmaid/ waitress was also excellent and made a much pretty picture behind the bar.

I find it hard to enthuse about anything here. The starters are unimaginative, and mainly fried. I had a "Special", which was sea bass, one of my favourites, but sadly a little undercooked with soft skin. Vegetables were noticeable by their absence. My wife had something described as a pasta bake. There was lots of it, but sadly this doesn't make up for a complete lack of taste. Staff were efficient and friendly, which, to be honest, gave them their third mark.

I did a lunch time beer test of this pub and finding the beer to be in good order and the menuoffering some non standard and reasonably priced items, I brought the family back in the evening. The service and standard of food could not be faulted and there was a very good atmosphere in the pub. Would go there again if we find ourselves in that area.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a pub offering half sized portions - a sign, I think, of the number of retired customers with smaller appetites! But for me the smaller portion was perfect too (sadly I'm no where near retiring). Someone has suggested the landlord wasn't friendly - I entirely disagree. He was quite a character but in a friendly way, and seems to get on well with his clientele. In my view the food wasn't Cordon Bleu but it was very tasty (and apparently the beer was good too).

We have recently stayed in Hawkchurch and one of our first stops was to The Old Inn to be inquisitive!! The pub had a very warm welcoming feel to it, we met some very friendly local people and the landlord, Rick and his staff, were very pleasant! He works hard and runs a good establishment. The food is exceptional, especially the steak and kidney pie, at very reasonable prices. During our week we called in 3 times and each time had a lovely evening. Rick is very knowledgeable of the area including a lot of history and we found him to be very interesting and helpful. They provide a good take away menu also. Thanks Rick, we will be back!

We stopped by at this pub for a drink and lunch. The landlord was particularly unpleasant and rude to several members of our party. We are an extended family spanning three generations and are a friendly bunch, however we decided to take our custom elsewhere. Suggest you frequent the Tytherleigh Arms instead where the food and service are first class. Bad luck Old Inn, you could have had some repeat business but you blew it!

The only pub in Hawkchurch, but worth a visit for lunch or an evening meal. Servings are large and very tasty. The landlord can be charming, (just don't catch him on an off day). Good value and a very picturesque setting.

Stayed in room 2 at The Old Inn for 2 nights on a business trip. An spacious, warm and comfortable room along with an equally warm welcome. A hearty cooked breakfast and excellent evening meals with plenty of choice. The Old Inn is great value for money and I have no hesitation in recommending this inn to anyone wishing to stay in the area. Thanks to Ricky and his team and I will be sure to choose the Old Inn when next in the area!

My wife and I have various food allergies, so it was so good to be told that they can adapt the meals to meet our needs. And they did, GF, veg instead of potatoes, you name it, it was done. The food itself was excellent, all four of us had brilliant meals. Well worth a visit

We enjoyed our night at this well run, clean and friendly hotel. The three course evening meal was freshly prepared and delicious. Our room was spotless and well presented. We both are surprised this is only a two star rated hotel, as our experience exceeded many four stars we’ve stayed in. Our breakfast was again delicious. The staff are all attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. It has ample parking and a beautiful rear garden with seating. If we are in the region again, we would wholeheartedly head for The Tumbling Weir, Thank~you

Great venue for lunch, always busy, good food at reasonable prices. Until today, prices have risen, the place was half empty, the food still good but not exceptional so why the price hike? My breaded plaice with chips, peas and tartare sauce was £16.99! It was nice enough, not outstanding and available elsewhere in Sidmouth for a lot less. If they want more profit and less customers I think this approach will work, we will think twice before returning as there are many other places to eat locally that offer better value for similar food.
