The Sidmouth Arms in East Devon

Lovely friendly place. Amazing new face over.

After many times visiting the Sidmouth Arms and having a pretty positive option of the place, I have to say what a shame its now been turned into a cattle market for food. The recent overhaul of the interior is horrendous as the old charm that was there has now gone, with plain rooms of many tables and a new bar that looks like the reception of a huge corporate Hotel/Airport. The whole place feels like a large family and children café refer than an old village pub. Sunday menu is only limited to roast dinners or fish and chips that are pretty poor. Not a place to go for a nice atmospheric print anymore. Positives are the food is still reasonably cheap and mostly tasty and its always open for business and food and the garden is very present place in the summer.

My partner and I visited The Sidmouth Arms tonight, and boy were we not disappointed!! Fantastic pub, hidden away in a small village, but the pub is bustling with people. It's very well staffed and organised. The staff are quick and attentive. The food, well......absolutely amazing. So tasty and freshly cooked, they cater for GF and Vegetarians alike. The best bit nothing is overpriced. It's all very affordable. Cannot fault this place at all. If you decide to go you must book early because although they have a good car park, this fills up fast, and you'll find it hard to park unless you park alongside the road. We had 2 starters and 2 mains, 2 double whiskeys, 1 pint of thatchers and 1 pint of coke, and it came to £70. You must try this place It's highly recommended and our new favourite place to eat.

A very nice village pub, right in the heart of Upottery village. Has a great range of beers, as well as the usual selection of drinks, and has some really nice food offerings, as well as a takeaway service. If your visiting the area you must visit!

Beautiful Public house in a wonderful village. Food is excellent and freshly prepared. Staff and locals are very friendly. I would not hesitate in recommending this establishment for a great evening out.

Travelling along the A303 and this was the first pub sign we had seen since leaving Plymouth. It’s a couple of miles from the main road but worth the effort. It was mid afternoon so not very busy but it looked so nice we decided to have a meal as well as a drink. Very good food, friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble and most importantly a great selection of real ales.

We went to the Sidmouth Arms with friends for lunch, and it’s difficult to fault! The food was excellent and the service superb! Ruby looked after us brilliantly - she was cheerful, friendly and efficient and had the right amount of banter without being intrusive. When we were there, there were major renovations taking place but they didn’t impact us at all but, if I was being hyper-critical, the dining room is somewhat stark and lacking in character, unlike the bar area which is more cosy. That didn’t detract from our meal though and we’d thoroughly recommend the Sidmouth Arms!

We had a fantastic meal at The Sidmouth Arms whilst away celebrating my 40th birthday with friends. It was honestly the best meal out I've had for quite a while.The staff were all lovely and service was great. Martin especially, went above and beyond. Massively recommend!

Nice food but it was quiet when we went and felt like the staff were watching us eat as they placed us in front of the bar. But we would visit again

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here with my wife, accompanied by our dog, at the end of September. Booking is essential as the lunchtime slot was completely booked. On a rainy afternoon it was great to sit in a warm and cosy pub restaurant with a good atmosphere and friendly diners. The food was lovely with generous portions and prompt service by friendly staff. I really enjoyed the roast beef and my wife had fish and chips, which was also nicely cooked and tasty. Recommended.

We holiday with our dogs in Devon/Somerset on a regular basis, and are always looking for dog friendly pubs that do great food. We stay in the Marsh area, and don’t like to have to travel too far from there. Having read the reviews, we decided to try The Sidmouth Arms, and are so glad we did. The pub has the feel of a traditional country pub, and there were obviously locals there having a pint,which is so nice in this day and age. So many pubs these days put too much emphasis on the food, and won’t even let you sit down if you don’t buy a meal! So my Hubby and I felt relaxed and at home. As for the food, I had the tagliatelle which came with delicious warm focaccia. My Hubby had the liver, which he said was delicious and succulent. We will definitely return when we are next in Devon.

We went here for the first time for sunday lunch an outstanding place to eat roast beef and pork were delicious portions were very ample both soup starters and deserts were excellent staff were very attentive nothing too much compliments to the chef cannot wait to return Amazing.

We called in on our way back from a day out so hadnt booked ahead. They were already fully booked for the evening, but they fitted us in . They catered for my Coeliac needs with a good selection of G/F on the menu. Very friendly staff and lovely pub. Highly recommend.

Food was nice and hot and staff very friendly. I would recommend the Liver and bacon.

Decent dog friendly pub,had a well cooked steak

My son and I met up here after a motorbike ride. We had a lovely, relaxing lunch in a nice atmosphere. The food was well cooked, the steak just how I like it and very flavourful. The food was very reasonable for such a place. It's in a very pretty quiet village, apart, that is from the loud refrigeration unit in the car park. Recommend it.

Stopped off here for lunch. We both had the Chicken Supreme with Stilton sauce and pancetta, absolutely delicious. Chicken was cooked to perfection and sauce was not overpowering at all. The pub has a lovely outside area for eating and is pressing ahead with some great renovation work (none of which interrupted us in any way). Would highly recommend a visit, it might also worth booking as it was busy for a lunch time so am assuming evenings could be even busier. We will be back again in the very near future.

A really good meal - we had big burgers and it was all delicious. Friendly staff and nice place. Toilets clean and just building an extension so clearly doing well. Quite busy - a good sign, advise to book. Very good for gluten free options - they do GF bread and burger buns (so many places don't) - thank you!!

Really lovely pub, spacious inside and improvements are ongoing. Toilets are absolutely immaculate. Great selection of food, which was delicious. Staff were welcoming and friendly, definitely worth a visit.

Nice traditional pub and good hearty pub food.

The food was fabulous. Great portion sizes and the food was cooked perfectly. I had the steak abd guiness pie which was a traditional pie rather than a dish with a pastry lid. It was served with chips abd peas. I ordered a side of vegetables abd they were cooked perfectly, crisp and crunchy. My husband had the " Sidmouth stack" burger which was amazing! The pub is dog friendly too which is great.

Another fabulous lunch al fresco. We enjoyed a couple of beef brisket specials, pasta and a burger. A few improvements inside. A very organised team taking orders and bringing food. Lovely selection of drinks. Very clean toilets on the ground floor and sufficient parking. Our dog enjoyed the community field for a run before and after lunch. Local beers on draught. A great pub, I wish I lived closer.

We called to book a late table and then had a diversion and a tractor delay. Despite our VERY late arrival the meal was lovely and the staff were incredibly helpful. Will definitely return. Also, lovely deserts!

Lovely looking pub, really friendly bar staff and servers. The food wasn't great, especially the lasagne. Very tasteless and full of barey cooked cheap cheese. Food was cold in the middle and swimming in oil. We were given one of our lasagne meals for free, but it has put us off returning. A shame because lasagne isn't that hard to get right.

Visited on off chance. Good to find a local pub open on a Monday. Ordered food but wasn't told there was a long wait, so waited for an hour to get our meals. Burgers cold, chips looked as if they came from chip shop, but vegetarian lasagne very good and hot, didn't complain at the time as we were all so hungry. On the positive side, lovely location and staff were very pleasant.

Outstanding Sunday roast! Great service and a beautiful setting. My partner and I couldn't remember when we have had better! Thank you for an exceptional lunch we will be back.

This was excellent. Stopped whilst en route home after a long day at work. Had lasagne which was clearly made on site, and excellent followed by an eton ness that had lots of fruit in it. Staff were without exception friendly and service was very quick indeed. Very impressive.

A great place with good Otter Ale and we had a lovely meal there.

First time at this pub as we're staying at otterfalls about 5 minutes away in the car. Gorgeous little village and locals are really friendly, Sidmouth arms was a lovely stop for food which was lush and desert was gorgeous,staff friendly and helpful. Definitely be back ☺️

This is a good pub which seems to have grown in popularity since we first visited. The bar is large with an adjoining dining room. The menu is large also and features all the usual pub favourites such as lasagne and mixed grill, but also, on the day we visited, more exotic offerings such as swordfish. It’s all very tasty, generous proportions and not overpriced. The beers are very good too. The service is coolly efficient.

We were driving from Par to Dawlish Wake, then on home to Midlands. Traffic, motorway closed as lorry hit bridge. On Road 9 hours. All minor, Major roads queues. So sorry toilet stop only. In back door out front door. Wonderful looking gardens front and back. Long room all set up for party that would take 60 odd. Go. Wish we lived nearer. Trouble is diving down lanes following satnav not got clue where it is, other on way to Ilminster

Excellent food and generous servings. The mixed grill with juicy cuts of meat is enough for two.

Can’t recommend it enough. The menu had a great selection (some pub classics but also some more interesting dishes that you don’t get in chain pubs) and cooked to perfection - always served hot and fresh, and very tasty. We stayed in the local area for three nights and ate here for two of them! Good selection of beers on tap. Nice friendly atmosphere in there, obviously popular with locals. Undergoing renovations at the moment but doesn’t detract. Toilets have been recently renovated and are very modern and clean.

Staff very polite and welcoming. Quite atmosphere as we were only ones eating at this particular time. Food was hot and plentiful. Drinks were well priced too. Would definitely go back again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at The Sidmouth Arms last night. The owners have spent a lot of money here doing it up. It is nice to see a pub so busy, keep up the good work! We will be back.

We, had not visited for about a year. It felt like new owners . The food, was disappointing. A lot of work being done.

Nice place. Servers need to learn to happier. Thought it was a funeral or private do each time I've been there. Lovely looming food and they have spent a mint. I just don't expect to walk out a stranger each time..might leave this one.

We've eaten Sunday lunch here 4 times now and I can honestly say the food is consistently good. Portion sizes are generous and a smaller size is offered for those with a smaller appetite. The staff are friendly and attentive as is the host. Booking is essential especially for Sunday lunchtime.

Just had Sunday lunch on our way home from Sidmouth at this delightful pub in a beautiful setting albeit a hairy road to get there thanks to Sat nav 😮all the staff were professional and friendly with great service and wonderful food will definitely be back next we're in the area😋

Popped in here after doing a car experience nearby. Reviews were good. The staff are friendly helpful and welcoming. The pub is clean inviting and very nice . Food was amazing I had the sole beautifully presented and very tasty and yummy . My partner had the Sidmouth stack burger he said it was tasty . They cater for coeliacs. We had desserts too panacotta and sticky toffee pudding divine . This pub is amazing can't wait to go back again when we are in the area . Thank you 😊😊

We booked a meal on a whim whilst away, so glad we did. Lovely pub, very friendly staff and the food was faultless. I had a steak which was so tender you could pull it apart with spoons. Hubby had a mixed grill which exceeded all expectations. We were so impressed we cancelled our Sunday roast booking elsewhere after confirming here. You won't be disappointed eating at this establishment, a prime example of a stunning business!

We went for a meal on the way home from Exeter,took my elderly mum for a belated Christmas treat.We have been for Sunday lunch before, this time evening meal.Food excellent and service,very helpful gave my elderly mum a cushion to make her more comfortable.All in all lovely country pub, cosy with open fire , friendly staff, value for money , will return.

Great food and even better service Myself and a friend went to the Sidmouth Arms tonight for dinner. She was coming to the area to visit me and I wanted to take her to our local. Our service was excellent, the food was really good and delivered really quickly and service was friendly. We told the lady at the bar we were planning to walk home and she explained it was raining and concerned about us walking home alone. The owner kindly gave us a lift home without hesitation to stop us getting soaked. The service and care at this pub was just second to none and we are so glad it’s our local!

It was okay, a bit basic but nothing bad. Staff were friendly and provided good service. Sunday roast was not very exciting

Saw the sign on the main road and stopped a little before the pub opened for Sunday lunch. We took the dog for a walk then arrived for 12 and had the most delicious roast lamb. They are Dog friendly and very welcoming and said we could park the camper van overnight if we needed to.

We had starters and main. Fantastic food, quality and quantity. I only wish we lived closer but we are in Kent. So if you see the signs on the A30 definitely go and visit this pub. It was the best.

I visited with the parents for mums birthday. I haven't been in a few years but the food and service were top notch as always. All our meals were excellent and the servers were very polite and efficient. I'd recommend the sidmouth Arms to anyone. Needless to say we'll definitely be returning.

Called in on a Sunday on the off chance there would be a table. There was, just! It was busy, so a very popular place. Had the roast which is available every Sunday. Choice of beef, turkey, pork and lamb. It came plated up with loads of meat and the vegetables were brought on side plates. There was plenty of food for us all. So much that we had to pass on the desserts which looked equally as nice. The staff were very accommodating as we had not pre-booked and polite in checking that we had all needed. Would highly recommend.

We visited this pub for both a lunch stop and then breakfast on our way home. On both occasions we were welcomed as if we were regulars (Never been here before. The baguettes that we had for lunch were both hearty, tasty and great value while the breakfast was a meal to us through our day. On hearing that they get thier beef from thier own family farm and overhearing the compliments that it was getting from customer we will making the effort to drive down soon for a Sunday lunch which we hear is a real hit. Thank you Sidmouth Arms for the hospitality.

Been here for a few occasions now, from a Christmas party to just picking up a takeaway lunch. Tasty food and really friendly.

Had a great Beef roast on New years day. Fast and very friendly service, plus a good choice of real ales. Great mix of locals and visitors in the pub and situated in a lovely village. Also there are places worth visiting for anyone with an interest in the WW2, a couple of miles away

Lovely village pub who welcomed a booking for a large family of 17 (just requested a preorder for food 👍). Service was great. Very friendly and quick. Food was beautiful! Very relaxed atmosphere. Would definitely recommend!

We met friends here for lunch. It is slightly off the beaten track but easy enough to find and has plenty of parking. It was fairly busy (seems to be popular with dog walkers and is dog friendly) but the staff seemed to manage very well. I'm an Otter Brewery fan so seeing Ale, Amber and Bitter all on tap as we walked in was good. Plenty of choice on the food menu, the lamb's liver and bacon on the specials menu made the decision easy for me and it was perfectly cooked and very tasty. The reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is the gents toilets. Although clean they are in need of work, it looks like the ceiling has had a leak and has a coating of black stuff (maybe mould?) and the mirror over the sink is cracked.

Return visit after many years and still excellent. Great food and service and a warm welcome. Just stopped off on route for a quick light lunch. They were very busy being Christmas but the staff were great and our meal came very quickly.

We were travelling back home from Salisbury to Tavistock. We’d noticed the pub signs on the way up and checked the menu, reviews etc and planned to visit on the way back if time allowed. We were on a tight schedule and about an hour away rang them to book a table for the 4 of us and even pre ordered our food. We arrived and were greeted by incredibly friendly and accommodating staff, the service was really quick and the food absolutely excellent. We were just so pleased to have been able to find a pub willing to take a preorder with nothing more than a phone call. Thoroughly recommended and based on the Christmas tables all set up we could see why they would be full. Thanks again, we were so grateful.

27 of us had a Xmas lunch food was lovely hot very tasty and served with a smile and very quickly. Very reasonable priced. Thank you Adrian and Cheryl

Excellent food service and ambience. I had the amazing mixed grill which was cooked to perfection followed by apple crumble

Xmas lunch was noisy and overcrowded with 3 different groups in the room simultaneously - at least 50 people. Food was variable - my beef was very good, but my wife's veggy offering was cold and miserly in quantity. Only being in excellent company saved the occasion.

So much to say about a wonderful place to visit we thoroughly enjoyed every moment that we went twice you don't get many places like this anymore friendly staff and couldnt do enough for you the dogs enjoyed there sausages which were on the menu. Lots of choice available and cater well for gluten free and the most amazing homemade pavlova which was amazing. The cost of things was worth every penny and big portions. Would be great to have this on your doorstep you lucky locals.

Great Sunday lunch while on weekend away. We had 2 well behaved dogs and 2 gluten free in our party. Lots of choice. This was our second visit, will definitely be back.

Amazing food, top quality mixed grill to die for best of ingredients and best I've had miller and Carter couldn't lace there boots and the steak and Guinness pie amazing to .So glad my daughter wanted too go here for her birthday 10/10 AA++
