A great little cafe where we enjoyed a genuine welcome and fantastic coffee. Even the dog received treats to the table which was a nice touch. We sat outside and watched the world go by.

Called in for a light lunch. I chose Sausage sandwich and chips, described as Butchers sausages. Well they weren't, more like cheap supermarket ones and the 'Chips' were soggy French Fries on the thinest supermarket cheap white bread. I shan't revisit. On the plus side service was ok.

Beautiful place I have no idea how this isn't rated higher but definitely would come back here again the food was spot on everything cooked proper and served hot could not have asked for a better place to have lunch.

Disgusting place, my little boy needed to go to the toilet I politely asked if he could use their toilet only to be told if I bought something he could use them, I have never been refused the toilet before in any town for my children, I am not a tourist and I think it’s absolutely disgraceful, it’s put us off going back to Sidmouth now Hope they are happy that they upset a child who was just desperate for the toilet

I wish we lived closer! True breakfast is fabulous & hot chocolate is to die for. The breakfast is freshly cooked, sets you up for the day, with choice of egg, it is absolutely delicious & reasonably priced too. One of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. The premises are spotless, with superb customer services and a welcoming friendly atmosphere, I can’t wait to be back. Nowhere in Sidmouth comes close.

Lovely cafe, the omlettes were delicious, a bit of a wait for food 😋 worth waiting for.

Had GF sandwiches to take out. Plenty of filling with salad on the side.

We had a lovely breakfast at The Chattery, whilst visiting Sidmouth. It is just out of the main high street, but was a great find. It was very clean, comfy seats and service with a smile. We had an Early Starter breakfast for £8.50, this included a hot drink and toast. The breakfast was hot, and delicious with good quality products. The bacon was butchers thick bacon and cooked to perfection and not salty. We would revisit and would recommend.

First waitress spilt our drinks then didn’t bring out the other drink which she said she would. So we were waiting for our J20. When the food came just plunked on one side of the table and didn’t say what it was. They can’t follow simple instructions

Ordered full English breakfast bacon was stone cold on cold plate rest was just warm also a pulled pork bbq sauce and cheese panini received just cheese panini sent back for what was ordered this took another 5 minutes while my husband ate alone the whole order took over 30 minutes to get food - the young man behind the counter was making mistakes with almost everyone he served - we were far from impressed would not recommend !

Decent breakfast ... Nothing to special eggs and hash brown a bit overcooked and beans where cheap ones ... Good sausages though but cramped squeezed 5 on a 4 person table

It was a cold and damp day when we visited. Inside was chilly too and the food didn't stay hot very long. The quality and quantity of our food was very good, though.

Oct 21st lunchtime. Family weekend in Sidmouth. Very disappointing visit to The Chattery, not to be repeated. Out of 2 servers, only 1 worked. She was running around picking up his slackness, to her we thank.

Fairly standard old fashioned cafe but unfortunately not great service. Lots of other lovely cafe options nearby

Called in for a coffee with the wife. Lovely with great staff that made us very welcome. Give it a try your love it. Keep up the good work. We will call back soon.

We had the chattery standard and xl breakfast plate. It was so delicious, I am writing about it! A breakfast we will not forget in a hurry, so tasty and locally sourced. Fantastic.

Food is good Customer service shocking ...I was a regular there but never again It seems you don't get the chance to reply to the owner But I would like to point out that there was no signage where I was sat to say no smoking and I would like to know what you class as abusive as I have always been polite I asked to be refunded my money for the coffee To which you refused so I took it in a to go cup but unfortunately when I was walking out I tripped on my flip flop and spilt it on the pavement and not on your premises at all accidentally so please don't make me out to be the bad guy in this

Very disappointed after reading some good reviews- mainly by the way polite concerns were recieved and responded to- I always try to resolve issues in person before reviewing publicly. Served warm 7up. Asked for ice. It was added with bare hands by staff (who had been taking cash and picking up dirty dishes) and it foamed up and over spilling lots of drink. The waitress said she hadn't spilled that much (I saw it myself and the level was far lower even with ice added). It spilled out, across the work surface and onto the floor. Asked for the wasted drink to be replaced- they said I could pay for another. The 7 up was then flat due to the amount of fizzing up caused by the way the ice was added. There was an incredibly unpleasant strong smell of dog- maybe just the individual dog sat across on the other side of the cafe. Very long wait for paninis to be made despite a number of empty tables so hardly full capacity. Average food- generous portions but very much spoiled by the warm, flat drink, unpleasant interactions, hygiene concerns around staff hands and bad smell. There are lots and lots of other far nicer places a stones throw away. Over priced compared to the cafes in London and Bath with higher standards.

Used to be able to get vegan cake here. Not any more. Important to me with lactose intolerance. Heard the kitchen staff laughing at my vegan request in the kitchen.

Enjoyed an early starter breakfast at this cafe today. It was well cooked with great bacon and eggs, and good toast. Staff were friendly , and it was clean, and a nice environment even though it was very busy for the folk festival.

Sidmouth Folk Festival meant the town was heaving.This cafe was brilliant.Was looking after a few OAP's so the staff and they put a reserved sign on the table until the others could join me a few minutes after my advance exploratory visit. MYA was brilliant.Looked after us with kindness and professional expeertise.Food great,lots of tea and very reasonably priced .Take a bow.

Visited Sidmouth today and arrived before most places had opened, came across this inviting coffee shop. We had a gluten free breakfast and a veggie breakfast. Staff were friendly and the food was hot and very enjoyable. Had a good chat with the owner (early and not too busy) who made us feel welcomed. Brought to freshly baked bakewell cookies which we took home. Just ate it and would say best cookie ever, worth a trip back just for these. Well done and hope business goes well for you in this tough climate!

Went there for breakfast which was bountiful , selection of how you want eggs cooked went for poached which were done to perfection with dark yolks Very friendly staff who even though place was busy made time to chat I’mm hindsight should have known ordered the smaller early bird breakfast as portions were large and excellent t value as included hot drink Will be back

Went to The Chattery for lunch hoping to find something light. Managed to find a table as was really busy, seems very popular! To my surprise, they have started doing small plates which are great value for money, just what I was looking for. Food was really good and staff were very friendly, really nice environment. Would definitely recommend and will be back to try the rest of the menu!

Nice enough vegan breakfast with plenty of food but why they think they can justify an extra 30p for about 20ml of oat milk is beyond me - that works out about £15 per litre. Staff said not much demand for it (not surprised at that price) so they don't get to use full bottle but it lasts a few days and this is profiteering. I know lots of others overcharge for nondairy milks but they shouldn't

the chattery is brilliant, i came in for some calamari and i’m very glad i didn’t go else where!! it was absolutely perfect and at a fairly cheap price. i would recommend it to anybody!

Popped in to this pleasant café. Pavement tables. Participating and supporting free jazz over the Sidmouth jazz festival. Good value ham sandwiches filled with quality ham/salad.🇬🇧🇳🇿

This is a review of the coffee only, not food. I had heard this place was really popular and going by the amount of people going in here, I thought I'd hit caffeine jackpot. The coffee was average at best and there are other cafes in Sidmouth that do better coffee. I think everybody is going in here for the food value. They were friendly and helpful and they have a loyal following obviously for their food. But for a great coffee brew, I guess I'll keep looking

Superb breakfast , freshly cooked , choice of different cooked eggs and white/ brown toast . We had chattery breakfast Cracking value for money totally recommend And nice to see satchets of Heinz and HP sauce instead of cheap versions which they had few years ago when we came . Best breakfast in sidmouth

We were visiting the area on Easter Sunday, so was really pleased to find they were open. Plenty of seating inside and out. Lovely little cafe with friendly staff. The food was delicious, the coffee fantastic and the location great. Away from the busy and more expensive sea front. Located in the centre of town with disabled access and street parking nearby. I always advocate moving away from the tourist hot spots to find these little gems.

I've been here a number of times. A little away from the crowds. The food is OK and prices comparable to elsewhere in town. The person in charge was new on this visit ... lovely and very hospitable. Makes a big difference.

I have eaten here twice but believe me NEVER again!!!!!! I had the all day breakfast. I had to ask for some more serviettes as the bacon was swimming in grease as was the plate. I don't know what was used to cook the food but it didn't taste good. The mushrooms tasty just like oil. I left most of the bacon. For one hour after eating there I had a VERY upset stomach. The first time I ate there, I had an omelette, which was also very oily. Should had learnt from my first experience. One thing in their favour, the staff are very friendly.

First time for Sunday lunch very large portion 1x beef 1xgammon very well presented we felt it could have been a bit hotter as it soon went cold but it was very tasty and very good

Haven't visited for 2 or 3 years. We thoroughly enjoyed our lite bite lunch, which actually was quite substantial. Toasted sandwich and an excellent panini. Friendly service. Will definitely come again when next in Sidmouth.

Very enjoyable burger chips and salad, lovely selection of cold drinks, sandwiches to order cakes etc, very useful as not a tea room that suits at 4pm but stays open until 8pm

What a lovely little place. Myself and my partner have just eaten the best breakfast whilst our little pup was treated to biscuits. The staff are so friendly and the quality of the ingredients and how they were cooked were on point. Will be returning for sure on our next holiday to the southwest:

Just a simple ham and cheese toastie, but WOW 😋 You can tell the ingredients are top quality, especially the salad and coleslaw that comes with it, fresh as a daisy. Staff are lovely too. I'd highly recommended this place 👌👌👌

Went for breakfast today (15.06.2022) I had the full English and my friend had the veggie breakfast. 2 really well turned out meals. Food was spot on and presented very nicely by cheerful/helpful staff. Will certainly return if in Sidmouth again. I know a little about serving a nice breakfast as I am a partner in a road side cafe/ take away. Thank you it was lovely.

We dropped in on our last morning in Sidmouth and both had the full English breakfast. Service was friendly and very efficient. The lady who was serving never stopped and yet remained very friendly and attentive, despite being run off her feet! The food was well cooked, well presented and high quality. We recommend eating breakfast here and will certainly be back when we next visit Sidmouth.

Visiting here whilst on holiday was a good choice. We were warmly welcomed but after having eaten a full and hearty breakfast at our holiday accommodation we only wanted a hot drink. However, after seeing several of the appealing orders we decided to share a fruit scone which we really enjoyed.We shall definitely return to this pleasant "Tea Shop" when next in Sidmouth and we are certain should we have chosen a substantial plate, we would have given "The Chattery" full marks

We stopped by The Chattery after not visiting for a couple of years and hoped it would be as good. We were not disappointed the ladies who served us were polite and when asked for water for the dog were really lovely. The food was great and the portion size is something else! Very quick service and comfortable surroundings dogs are welcome inside and out. Very affordable we will be back soon :) Thank you.

Had a lovely breakfast, with a good cup of coffee, in The Chattery last week. They have a good variety of food available. We will definitely be returning.

Having eaten here occasionally for many years, we were disappointed with the offering today. The pie of the day, turkey and leek, was really disappointing, the filling was only as thick as the pastry and hardly tasted of anything, the additional gravy was beef based instead of poultry based. All other things on the plate were as good as usual. I feel that this pie was made by someone untrained as a chef or cook and maximised profit over and above customer satisfaction. This is how you loose your customers.

Ok, but were unable to provide our preferred choice from the menu, and this was before midday and they didn't look particularly busy - they missed a further 2 sales as other customers also asked for the same food.. Despite that you can get a decent pot of tea .

Indifferent staff and food, poor value for money. Asked for a small sandwich for a 5 year old, no reduction in adult price. Would not recommend on my experience.

Asked for a latte not particulary good coffee. Never had a tosted teacake before that came already buttered/spread dont know which wasn't asked. And the tap in the ladies toilet is loose and moves around. Its not as good as it use to be.

We came across this little cafe/Restaurant for breakfast and it was amazing, full English with tea/coffee and toast for £7.95, yes please! Very quick service, will defo come here again xx

I am not familiar with the town of Sidmouth and made a reservation at the Chattery for lunch on May 18th based on the rating on-line, taking my mother out for the first time in months following the easing of lockdown rules.The reservation was well handled and having informed the team there that I needed to postpone my original plan by 24 hours, that was no problem for them. The Cafe space was clean also, and there was plenty of space inside given very few guests.We both ordered the fish of the day (cod), but having done so, were subsequently informed that only one portion was available ( so why was it described as fish of the day?).My mother had that one available portion. The batter was clearly overcooked, and the fish itself inside was tough. My mother suggested that it may have been cooked twice.I regret not having made a fuss at the time, but since my mother was upset, we could not get out of the place fast enough.I seriously wonder how this establishment is rated as being 4.5.

Had a lovely lunch of Marie Rose Prawn Sandwich on granary and bowl of chips. Enough for two of us as big door stopper sandwich with lots of filling as well as homemade coleslaw & Salad. Great coffee and tea and very good price of £14. Tables outside. Really lovely clean toilets too.Unfortunately didn’t take any pics but give it a visit you won’t be disappointed.

5 STARS to The Chattery for not only being one of the very very few places to serve breakfast in Sidmouth at their outside tables, but also for serving it on actual china plates and with metal cutlery! Waves of nostalgia came crashing in! Lovely experience in the sun today with their 'early starter' Full English Breakfast @ £7:95 including Latte and a round of really nice toast and butter. You can just turn up, but because they have only a small number of tables, perhaps book yours if you plan to come specially.

Great experience just as outdoor eating re-opens. Friendly staff, all 4 family members loved the tasty, generous meals and the prices were excellent

The food was fantastic. Ingredients were fresh and packed with flavors that really worked well together. Waiting staffs were really attentive and helpful. Nice touch to end the meal was the complementary desserts.

We have been regular visitors when holidaying in Sidmouth. Booked up last weekend (24/10) breakfast was good but the atmosphere wasn’t the same... it was cold dark day and it felt cold in the cafe and the atmosphere felt flat. Shame :( I don’t think we will return next year.

This little café is part of a former Cinema that suffered a fire in the 1950s. The walls are decorated with photographs of it both as a cinema and then as a burned-out shell. The building was rebuilt into 3 shops and The Chattery is one of them. We were warmly greeted by a rather bohemian server who took our orders promptly. This café serves delicious paninis on a rather unusual bread with nigella seeds, which was a personal 'first' for me. The one I had was tasty and very hot.
