Old England Fisheries Restaurant in Wakefield

My friend and I were on a day trip and this was the first fish and chip cafe we came across. Large fish and chips, mushy peas, slice of bread and butter and a large latte...£10.50...wow! And it was freshly cooked to order, fast service and the staff were absolutely lovely. We were greeted with a smile and they were polite and extremely hard working. I just wish this place was nearer to me because I would definitely use it again

Best fish and chips in Wakefield with good service. don't believe the last negative comment i was in that day the customers got what they asked for and was very rude to the owner even when he refunded the full amount.

you don't get what you pay for we paid for large fish and chips and they gave us small fish and chips and when we complained we got shouted at and he grabbed me to try and forcefully remove me from the premises 😠👎

When to the captain fish restaurant for breakfast. Instantly felt welcome and the waitress wasn't hovering so we had time to browse through the menu. Fresh cooked to perfection not greasy and a substantial amount. All round quality food at a good price send fantastic service

Sat outside and watched the world go by with a tray of chips and gravy. Decent price and quick service would totally recommend.

Two stars for good service and portion size, however the fish was definitely not fresh, it had a slight taste of ammonia which indicates old fish frozen for too long so not impressed at all as most of it went into the bin.

Consistently good chippy and cheap eats. Good portion sizing. Chips are not greasy and that's a good thing. I just wish the chips could be a bit more crispier.

Took my kids her they both enjoyed it and the staff were really friendly. Fish and chips were a good price as well

Traditional fish and chip shop. Takeaway and sit in. Staff very nice. 2 steps to get in. Once in all on one level. Accessible toilet. Fish wow as are chips and mushy peas. Prices good.

Customer service was shocking. Then, having ordered fish and chips with scraps, but was told "no scraps today"...i noticed thick liquid pouring out of the fish. I cut into the fish to find the batter was raw and dripping off the fish inside, which was also freezing. I told the staff who looked at one another and then said they would make another. Feeling sick at this point, i told them i wanted a refund which i was handed with no apology. I have been violently sick for the last 2 hours. Never, ever again. The absolute worst food i have ever had 🤢🤢🤮🤮

Every time my daughter and I go shopping in wakefield city centre, we choose to have our midday meal here, We have never had a disappointing meal, the quality of the fish is first class, the batter is light and crisp, and the chips are perfect. The staff attend to us quickly, and are friendly every time we visit. I am more than confident you will enjoy your meal.

Today I came in here as I was off my work break. I was extremely hungry and decided to go and visit this chippy shop I saw. The staff were extremely nice and the place had excellent customer service. The fish and chips were very good. Everything about was correct, it was one of the best fish and chips I’ve had for a while.If you’re ever in Wakefield you must visit this chippy. You will not be disappointed.

I came in on Saturday and a gentleman served me. Very polite and very, very helpful. The food was served perfectly with a very large portion of chips and the fish was huge. It was 6.49 with cuppa and bread. Will be calling in more often. Thank you all to the young man, said his name was Ryan!

I went to Olde England on Monday and it was great! Love that toilets were available and very clean. The lady who took my order was very nice and helpful- and was nice enough to sort me out a good deal. The food is lovely- obviously very fresh and the portions were spot on for me. Will definitely be going again!!!

I called in on Saturday and a nice young lad took our order. He were so nice to my little lad and they had a floss of lol. He brought the food out in perfect time and the portion was if anything too much. A great place with great staff and great food- might make this our regular hangout

I visited and had a large fish and chips with a pot of tea. The food was freshly cooked, delicious and the young man that served me was very polite and friendly. I will definitely be going back.

People who work there are very nice and i always chat to them (especially on a Saturday). The eating space is nicely spaced out and toilets are clean especially considering these are public. Amazing deals on offer - 14.49 for fish and chips with a drink and topping for two. The kids sizes are perfect-not to small not to big. The food itself is served a nice warm plate and the food tastes fresh and is the best fish and chips around. It seems to get better and better every time i go in as well- been the best for years since they hired a new chef!

Been here three times now, it's ok for a town fish shop but nothing too special. I came here with hubby the last time, there was a strange smell lingering through the restaurant i noticed it walking in it wasn't good. The meal was what i expected just like the ones i had previously. Very nice but nothing special. Pleasant efficient staff and good service.

I was searching for a near by local fish and chip shop and a work colleague suggested here.The fish and chips are really nice, traditional fish and chips. The portion is of a generous size and are priced at £4.79. I now go every now and again may be at two week intervals/

I was entertaining my grandkids for the day so we called into here for lunch as a change from fast food. I was concerned on our arrival as the restaurant looked extremely tired and a tad grubby, however, we chose a table at the back of the room. I was surprised by the menu, I had hoped there might be more variety, especially in terms of the children's menu as whatever we looked at seemed to be unavailable.They lady came and took our order and was back within about ten minutes. As she put our plates down on the table she asked for payment. I was rather surprised at this so my lunch waited until she had gone and got the card machine and I paid. One child asked for orange juice and got a watery glass of squash and he didn't like his fish at all (he usually loves fish). I had expected an option where fish and chips, bread and butter and tea were served as a package but the menu didn't offer anything like this.To be honest I was happy to get out of the place, I believe that calling this a restaurant is against the trades descriptions act. It is a café at best. We wont be coming here again.

When the market was moved we thought this place would shut down, how wrong were we, food is as good as it ever was and we should really cal more often.

Popped in for some dinner and was quite surprised.... the fish and chips with mushy peas that i had was really good... will be calling again the next time im in Wakefield.

my first time eating here and let me tell you ,it was terrible.First they didn’t have half the stuff advertised on the menu,terrible staff ,looked like they rather be somewhere else.the food was so so ,ended up having fish and chips.VERY OUTDATED MENU

No estoy seguro de por dónde empezar. Al entrar se podía oler que una barda fregona había sido utilizada en la planta, muy elegantes. . La Mesa había sido limpiado con un paño húmedo fiesty. Olía a gato. Pescado y chip. Con salsa de curry. Mi esposa tenía patatas fritas pescado y guisantes. El bateador alrededor del pescado fue quemada y oscura. Abrir el pescado. . Pescado en sí sabía bien.. Sólo una vez que pescaban. el profundo charco de aceite! ! El nivel de comida aquí es super mala, el lugar está sucio y cansado. Esto podría ser un buen lugar en el centro de la ciudad, una verdadera pena y una decepción. Yo sugiero que evitar.

Fui a la pesca de Inglaterra la semana pasada y me gustó mucho. He leído un montón de comentarios negativos, pero siento que aquí es probar distintas perspectivas. El abadejo de tamaño normal es enorme, una buena relación calidad-precio. Hacen un gran eglefino, que sería un reto en sí mismo. Las patatas guisantes de un tamaño generoso gran relación calidad-precio. El personal agradable. Así que no veo por qué los comentarios negativos. Sin duda alguna el "fish and chips" de nuevo cuando necesita una gran causa alimentar este chippy no pequeña.

Las raciones son más pequeños cada vez que vamos y el personal no se ha amable como lo solía ser. No volver a nosotros, y nos hemos estado comiendo allí durante años. Tuvimos que esperar años para pescado y patatas fritas, a pesar de que ha sido un bien tiene un restaurante.

Not good at all. Frozen fish and frozen chips and cold curry sauce. Needless to I say, we won't be going again.

Lovely fish and chips but on the 2 occasions I have been in for takeaway fish and chips I felt that I was being a nuisance by being there!! Have never known scampi take so long to cook either!!

Very central in Wakefield this take away and sit-in fish and chip shop does exactly what you would expect - serve a solid portion with the usual simple trimmings. nothing fancy, just reliably good.

Called in saturday dinner and the place was not very busy, lots of half finished plates still on uncleared tables, not the cleanest of places , but we were very hungry and thought we would give it a try. The fish and chips looked nice enough but the fish was poor quality and didnt taste freshly cooked and was bland, the chips wernt any better either, service was poor,staff more interested in geting your money than bothered wether you had a nice meal or not. Wont be going again

I found the fish and chips to be good though not great. The fish was large, cooked well and the chips were slightly different however importantly not greasy. I would have said it's an acceptable option for fish and chips in the area however the service was very poor. Forced smiles. Food dropped on the table. Glass left upside down when brought with the drink. I was never asked if I was happy with the food either.It's fair to say they are small gripes but each small thing contributes to the overall feeling of not waiting to be there. I would not have hired the person serving. They over shadowed the meal ultimately.I'd only recommend the take out option based on my resteraunt experience. I can't say how the fish and chips measure up to other options in the area.

We was on a shopping trip and spotted The Olde England Fisheries and thought lets give it a try.Great selection on the menu to chose from and also a menu for the kids.They now sell alcohol too and at just £9 for a bottle of wine thought why not.I noticed the size of the fish(or whale) and just ordered that, my partner had fish chips mushy peas.Very fast service by a cheeky waitress.I can honestly say i have never tasted fish like it , it was perfect and very tasty.The place was very clean too.I cant wait to visit again, friendly staff and the owners too.

My partner and i went for meal after going shopping. I had kingsize fish chips and mushypeas and pot of tea. My partner had scampy chips mushypeas and softdrink. Fish was huge and ever so tasty. Staff polite and friendy will certainly go again.

If you want a nice Fish & Chip meal this is the place, the fish was massive, plenty of chips and the mushy peas were great, there was so much l could not eat it all...

I called for lunch on Thursday 10th September, I had been shopping, and it was a warm day and I fancied a meal that I could eat outside in the sunshine. and as I passed the Old England Fisheries, the smell drew me in, to the takeaway counter. The restaurant was pretty full, I ordered fish and chips, I could have sat on the outside seating but decided to sit watching the water fountains in the bullring.which is a few yards away.The fish had light crispy batter, and the fish was large and cooked to perfection, it was light flakes the best I have tasted in a long time. the chips were just the way I like them, cooked in Palm oil. and proper potatoes I would think fresh , not frozen , good value for money and a good filling meal.

Attended this chippy recently for dinner, as soon as you walk through the door there's no indication to whether you should wait at the door for a table or sit yourself down. Miserable waitress came over, took our order and walked off. A thank you would have been nice.Another waitress came out, this one looked abit happier, slammed our food down and said how much it costs and walked away.Food was lovely, cannot fault it. However there was 3 flies that kept landing on us or our food. One fly landed in my partners tartare sauce and got stuck in it!!! It was absolutely boiling in there and I heard a few other customers complain about the heat and the flies. Can of coke was £1.15.Will not be returning sadly.

Went with my sister a couple of weeks ago, we were looking forward to going as we hadn't been In years, however the waitress just looked like she didn't want to be there. She did not smile or say thank you once. The food however was nice but the waitresses attitude just made the experience award :(

I keep calling back for more from the take away bar on the front. Full sit down service with 10 to 15 tables in the city centre. Well worth a visit if you are looking for freshly cooked fish and chips.

A bit pushed for time, I bobbed in for a quick meal. Just 5 minutes later I am sat down and tucking in to lovely hot and tasty Fish and Chips, some bread and Butter with a Pot of Tea and all for £4.99!Yes, under a fiver for a great meal, served quickly by lovely, chatty staff, probably the best lunch deal available in Wakey!Highly recommended, especially if you are pushed for time on your dinner break.

I happened to be in central Wakefield on a miserable day & decided to get out of the rain & get something to eat.Traditional decor & fish, chips & a drink for £5.60. Really tasty & at a good price.

Fish was wafer thin so just tasted of oil & batter just dropped off when i put my knife in the "fish".Went to restuarant part, waited 25 minutes for our meal (take away was empty) and the waitress, who we heard telling another group she was tired, never once said Please or Thank you & dumped the meal on the table like it was too much trouble. Floor was very slippy, could do with a proper scrub..accident waiting to happen.Plenty of competition in the area so dont know why they let theirs be so bad.

Once upon a time, ever biggish town in the UK had at least one combination Fish & Chip shop and restaurant, where you could get a reasonably priced fish-themed lunch with tea, bread and butter. A lot of them have disappeared, or been replaced by coffee bars, but the Old England is still there. I ate on a Thursday lunchtime when it was very quiet, and had the special lunchtime offer - £4.99 for fish, chips, bread & butter and tea (or, in my case, coffee). It came more or less instantly, was well cooked and a decent piece of fish. There weren't a huge amount of chips, but more than enough for a light lunch. The staff were polite and very efficient, and overall it was a good experience - not somewhere you'd go for that special meal, but a great day to day place to eat - especially at the lunchtime price!

Went through the week to the restaurant bit. For five pound tea/coffee, large fish, chips and bread and butter. Nice inside and clean.. could throw in some peas but hey ho ;)

We visited the Huddersfield branch and after been served a very flattered fish and cold chips , we won't be calling back, certainly no improvement on the last visit, The staff all under 18 who spent the time with the mobile phones, Going on and moaning about FACE BOOK !!!

First time in this eatery. My husband and I went in for lunch. It was pretty quiet. We both ordered the fish and chips special, which came with white or brown bread and butter and a choice of coffee or tea. The staff were friendly and the service was excellent. The food arrived promptly, was freshly cooked and delicious and was greatly enjoyed by both of us. I am quite fussy about fish and chips, having been disappointed on numerous occasions elsewhere, but this was one of the best.

Today, I visited this fish and chip shop for my dinner. The attitude of the women in the shop stank! They were rude and awful. When I asked them for fish and chips they looked asif I'd just asked them something ridiculous. NEED NEW STAFF.
