This beautiful pub/hotel has a wonderful atmosphere, delicious food, the friendliest staff. Very highly recommended. Don’t miss the chocolate cheese cake.

Fabulous place to eat with a very varied menu. I go regularly with family and friends, the food is consistently very very good, the service is first class. Young waitresses very polite and the landlady is so welcoming. I really cannot understand why anyone would give the Old Down Inn, a negative review.

This is our go to for a Friday night treat or a family meal. Consistently great food and lovely service. Excellent beer I am told as well. Maxine always has time for a chat and is one of the kindest most genuine licencees you can meet. Keep doing what you’re doing, you do it very well.

We booked a table but they did not actually have a table for us. When my grandmother said that we’d like a different table the older lady rolled her eyes at her. I asked her not to do that and told her it was very unprofessional, she replied very rudely and said I was lying. Completely avoid

We visited for my father’s birthday, he’s been lots of times but it was my first visit. I was blown away by the superb Sunday roast and service, this place is absolutely beautiful. Plenty of parking and very easy to get to from Bristol or Bath . I can highly recommend The Old Down Inn and will look forward to another visit soon.

A really lovely pub with quality pub grub. Good value for money, hot tasty food and lovely service. It was nice and busy - creating nice ambiance. Veg lasagne and garlic bread was super tasty.

Stayed for bed and breakfast. A lovely room and a very comfortable mattress. A fantastic breakfast. The full English was enormous! Quality Ingredients and fab bread. A lovely landlady. Christmas tree tastefully decorating making a welcoming entrance.

Fantastic stay and festive family meal at the old down inn .As usual the staff are amazing and look after you well .They all work really hard and are very welcoming. Maxine deserves a medal .

The food was fantastic, great value for money, the waitresses went above and beyond. the table wobbled slightly we wont blame the beer… wonderful to see the owner talking to everyone that came in. will return.

We booked this as a family trip with our cousin who was visiting from Australia. We booked two rooms, a family room for myself, my husband and teenage son; and a double room for our cousin. I thought the family room would be one room with a double and single bed, or two double beds, but actually what we had was a little unit with two huge double bedrooms and a bathroom. The rooms were clean, bright and airy. The bathroom was small but did the job. All the rooms are up a slightly steep staircase with a curve. Maxine the host was lovely as we arrived slightly early when the pub was closed (it's closed between 2 and 6), but this wasn't a problem. The inn is a coaching inn so it is on a main road. Therefore you will hear traffic, but it didn't bother us. We stayed for three nights and ate in the inns restaurant every night which was a relief as this meant we didn't have to spend the whole day looking for somewhere eat. The food was superb. I can recommend the steak and ale pie (I had this twice!), the veggie lasagna, the crumble, and the salted caramel cheesecake (which I also had twice!). It was clear that the staff enjoy working here. Breakfast was great and had a good selection to please everyone. The full English was appreciated by our Australian cousin. Maxine is a very attentive host and just after one night she knew and remembered our preferences, as well as keeping our cousin supplied with Expresso's! On our last day which happened to be Father's Day, Maxine even supplied our cousin with a giant Yorkshire pudding for breakfast as it's not something he has in Australia! This was a very kind and thoughtful gesture. We could see the pile of Homemade Yorkshire puddings through the kitchen window made that morning for the father's Day lunch. I've never seen Yorkshire's that large! There is also a large garden at the property which is well maintained with lots of seating that is well spaced out. We sat out every evening and enjoyed the sunshine with a drink or two. This is a great location for many places including the Bath and West showground, Bath, The Haynes Motor Museum, Fleet Air Museum, Wells just to name a few, and there is plenty of parking available. All in all, a very comfortable stay and we will use this location again when down in Somerset.

Stayed for two nights with daughter to go sightseeing. The room was very clean and comfortable. The food was really good and plenty of it. The people were very friendly.

Sunday lunch at the pub absolutely superb cooked to perfection and extremely reasonable price. The choice of starters main and sweets was extensive and if anything made it hard to choose. 10 out of 10

Came here for a meal and was amazing as always. Me and my boyfriend went for a meal had starters of squid and cheesy garlic bread which arrived very quickly after ordering and tasted delicious. Then i had chilli beef stirfry and rice which was amazing and my boyfriend had steak and ale pie which he absolutely loved. Service was great as well as feeling very welcomed great value for money. Will definitely be back soon!

This is one of my favourite pubs. Never had a bad meal and food is great however went on a sunday recently with friends to a pre booked table. We had just finished our deserts when waitress awkwardly asked us if we want any more drinks we said no so she offered us the bill. landlady then came over and said i’m sorry i don’t mean to be rude but if you don’t want anything else we need the table as we are busy… well yes that’s very rude when we had literally just finished our drinks… We had 3 courses between us and the rush of everything had put me off returning

As we were sitting down at our table we were asked what drinks we would like, I looked around on the table and couldn’t see any menu that was drink related so asked if there’s some drinks menus. I was then told ‘no we don’t have those’, which was a great start. There was a choice of 2 ciders apparently, when going to the bar later that turned out to be wrong as there were at least 4. Surely a restaurant should have the capacity to be able to print off some drinks menus along with the print out food menus? The food menu did have an impressive amount of choice on there which was good. All the food came out in half an hour which was pretty good considering it was a table of 8. My partner ordered the sirloin steak, cooked rare. It came out and it was arguably the most unappealing looking steak we’ve seen, almost completely grey in colour. Upon cutting into it, it wasn’t cooked rare, it was medium-well at best. She did then say to the waitress as she came out with other plates, the girl apologised and took it back. A couple minutes later another lady came out, I’m assuming the landlady, with the same plate, held it over another of our guests’ head and said ‘it is cooked rare you’ve cut it in the thinnest place’. So not only is that rude, that’s wrong and it’s our fault the chef can’t cook a steak properly? It also had a hair in it as well which topped it off. The other meals were good and the prices were quite reasonable in fairness but that reflected the quality of them. Won’t be going back again.

Our third stay at this traditional country pub. As per the previous two visits, the welcome was warm and friendly. Bedroom was lovely, restaurant meal and breakfast was gorgeous. Will definitely return soon.

The food that I hv had in the Old Down has always been very good. Not always enough of it but what is served is good. We were offered one small dish of vegetables between two. Four sprouts on each dish. So two each!!!! We asked for more veg and we were given another two dishes. Although no more sprouts. The turkey 1 small ball of stuffing. 1 pig in blanket!!! No cauliflower cheese. No bread sauce. They got the order wrong. Even though the Lady that booked the table had rang in the order in good time. Also written it down and posted through the letterbox to make sure. No apologies. Just I'll set up another sweet. The malteser cheesecake. My two friends had agreed to share a sweet. What was served up looked like it had already been shared. Until another Lady on our table got the same. The pieces that were served up were a malteser wide!!! At the end of our meal we were not offered coffees. Let alone mince pies that we would hv had to pay for separately. It wasn't particularly busy that day. I came away dissatisfied.

Warm greeting as we arrived , the young staff were excellent, seated straight away and the service was great, our meals were served quickly and of excellent quality, definitely be returning 😀

We never got around to trying the food due to the table we were given. As you can see from the photos the view was stunning haha. I hate complaining but I don’t think it’s acceptable to expect someone to stare at a wall for an hour. We were in-front of two doorways too with people constantly walking past, just felt in the way. It made me feel really claustrophobic and was quite embarrassing to be honest. We did ask for another table but we were told one wasn’t available. I can’t imagine anyone would want to go out for dinner and sit at this table.

Yet another lovely stay at the Old Down Inn. Lovely rooms, amazing food, brilliant hospitality and a wide choice of beers. Breakfast superb. Highly recommended.

Marvellous! I was a wee bit nervous about taking my parents (early 80s and early 90s ) out for a meal. Needn't have worried. First class distancing measures, friendly , helpful and understanding. The food was lovely. Home cooked, tasty and definitely plentiful. We had beef and stuffed chicken breast followed by three of a wide selection of puds! We were staying locally and booked over the phone .On arrival we received a friendly welcome and were temperature checked and our details taken , good to see that they had great process in place.We ordered as mains the chicken in pepper sauce and slow cooked beef, both were amazing with generous portions.We also had deserts which were very good.Staff friendly and attentive throughout.Very good value for money, so we booked again for the last night of our holiday.Again, covid process great, food very good and attentive staffWould not hesitate to eat here again when in the area, and would try and book accomodation here at the same time

Table booked for 4...Good Covid measures in place. Sunday Menu lovely choices, orders taken and Starters arrived quickly, Prawn Cocktail, Garlic Mushrooms with lovely warm crusty bread and Butter. Soup was also very tasty. Choice of Roasts...served with sides of Vegetables. Only downside of the Roast were the Roast Potatoes, very crispy but hard, otherwise the meal was great. Puddings all 4...different were enjoyed by us all...

My husband and I haven't been to the pub for nearly a decade and what a difference the landlady has made to the pub. We booked a table Tuesday evening 3 weeks prior to eating and i phoned on the day to make sure the pub was open as had been closed due to an outbreak and cleaned down only to be told no booking for us had been logged but they still accommodated our booking.Seated and drink orders taken and not too long to wait before food orders. We ordered Japanese style torpedo king prawns with sweet chilli dip for starters followed by fillet of steak and chicken break with stilton sauce.

We eat at The Old Down about once a fortnight after returning the grandchildren to Chilcompton.Friday night was our first visit since lockdown.I made a reservation and on arrival we were met at the door by a lovely waitress, who offered us sanitisers and took our contact details.We had a drink in the garden first to study the menu and was surprised how extensive it was, given the circumstances.The pub has been decorated, outdoor furniture painted and a makeover for the garden including an interesting vegetable patch.A number of tables have been removed inside yet this did not detract from the atmosphere.Usual excellent food and great service from Maxine and the team.If you are apprehensive about eating out again I can assure you you'll feel relaxed when you see how they've organised things.

Went to the Old Down tonight to celebrate my husbands birthday with family members. Max has been very busy during lockdown as the place has been redecorated and it looks absolutely fabulous. If anyone is concerned about socialising during this current climate this is the place for you. The pub is very large with lots of different rooms so it makes it very easy for everyone to be very well spaced out, but at the same time you don't feel socially isolated! It's very relaxed with all the necessary requirements taken care of and you feel completely safe.As for the food well, that's up to its usual standard and our meals were lovely. Couldn't ask for more, the staff were very attentive and we will of course be back.Well worth a visit ... and the garden outside has also been given a mini makeover and is a lovely space to sit with a drink.

Excellent staff, good friendly place. A joy to be there, very homely.. Very good food. We have eaten in this place many time as our friends have. On our last visir to hve a meal with our daughter and grand daughter, first time visir for them my daughter to three of her friend for evening meal all enjoyed and the Old Down now have three more customers and their family and freinds. We went here for Sunday lunch with my 92 year old mother in law. The food was up to its usual high standard, very tasty and the meat was great.Mother in law was taken ill and Maxine the landlady couldn't have been nicer or more efficient. Also the nurse who was having her lunch, thank you for your kindness.We will be returning very soon

Loveley pub. Clean, decorated well and friendly staff. Also Child friendly. Visit here whenever I’m in the area, the food is home cooked and good size portions. Very reasonably priced. I’ve never had a bad meal here. Specials board has a large variety and always different options to suit every bodies taste. The homemade puddings are delicious! Plenty of free parking. Can not wait to return!

Booked for a lunchtime with a couple of friends and my 3 year old daughter. Found the lady who I assume mangers the pub very rude, my daughter was sat on the chair on her feet so she could reach the table. The lady who works there told her to get her feet off the chair. The same lady took our food order, I ordered for my daughter, she asked my daughter what choice of side she would like, my daughter didn’t reply so she walked away. My daughter has severe speech difficulties, and other special needs, which was very obvious when we ordered our drinks at the bar.The lady was very rude to her. I will not be returning.

This washer first visit to this restaurant and oh what a warm friendly comfortable place this is lovely friendly staff and the food was delicious and very reasonable price and we did not have to wait long definitely going there again throughly recommend .

I visited this little gem on Saturday evening to celebrate my brothers birthday. The quality of food and size of portions was very very impressive. The cost of the meals were also very reasonable. It was very busy, which I say speaks for itself. The service was outstanding. We will definitely be returning for more good value food!

Since my initial review of this establishment, I have returned on numerous occasions with family and friends. This is one of the most consistent, quality led places that I have had the pleasure to visit. The food is excellent with a good range available, drinks are competitively priced and the staff all very friendly. Service is always polite and helpful and even when the place is very busy delivery of food is always timely.The ambience of the pub (to be honest, it’s more a hotel interior than ‘just a pub’) is superb.If there is one thing that I would change, it is the lighting - not in the (lower) bar but the restaurant areas. By day it is lovely and bright but for evening meals, especially for more intimate meals, subdued lighting would be better as it is very bright; perhaps a little too bright. Put the lights on a dimmer switch and ‘problem solved’.Otherwise, what a great place to go. 100% recommended.

Found this place on Trip Advisor and gave it a try while stopping in Radstock for the Bath Christmas Markets. We are early eaters and were a little bit intrepid as the car park was virtually empty on arrival. We are so pleased we still took the plunge and went inside. The hallway was festively decorated and gave a welcoming feeling. At the bar we asked if we could have a table for two and discovered we were not the first ones in. For starters I had Japanese Style Torpedo King Prawns with a sweet chilli dip. Main course Chicken with Peppercorn Sauce. My husband had the pie of the day. Both our meals were lovely. There was a nice ambiance and we very pleased with our choice of venue. Would definitely go back if we are ever in this area again.

I came here as part of a large group with my family for a Christmas meal. We were sat in one of the rooms for larger parties which had been decorated nicely for Christmas. Unfortunately we messed up the pre-order of our food so there were a couple of mix-ups, but the Old Down were very accommodating and sorted it all out.

The lovely Old Down Inn used to be our local and we had our wedding evening do there after getting married in Bermuda in 2006. We now live in North Somerset and do not go back nearly as often as we should.Today we went for lunch with sister in law who lives nearby.The place was really busy with Christmas parties in the functions rooms.We ate in the front bar and despite being busy the staff were very helpful and accomodating.We really enjoyed our excellent meals from the bar menu.A special thank you to Maxine's cousin who looked after us very well and made a fuss of our naughty chocolate labrador puppy. Hope to visit again and catch up with Maxine who was on her day off.

10 of us spent a great evening at The Old Down on Saturday. As ever, there was a friendly welcome from Maxine and her staff.

We arrived at 1.45 pm to have a over night stay on the 14th of December. The pub was really busy. We were greeted straight away by bar staff and Maxine. After being shown to our room, we returned to bar, where even though they were really busy they took are lunch order with smiles. There was a group of small children running around the entrance area and inbetween the eating area, that did not seem to be supervised by any one, the serving staff where having to get round them carrying plates etc. I was very impressed by the way the staff worked around this problem.

This would be a 4 star review if it wasn’t for the rude and unhelpful behaviour of the landlady/matriarch. We were a large family group there for Xmas dinner. The food was good, the pub itself is pleasant and all the other staff were lovely. Real shame.

Great food, plenty of it, the landlady and her team went out of their way to make us feel welcome and entertained, service was great and the food is really good too.

Food excellent just a shame about attitude of one member of staff who was rude to guests and our children who were looking a pub parrot . However looking through group booking reviews we are not alone, real shame because food was excellent and setting is lovely. Enjoyed ourselves regardless.

My wife and I live in Wells, our friends live in Radstock, so the historic Old Down Inn was a convenient location for lunch. We were advised to book, and we were glad we did, it was busy. The menu is good and varied with pub favourites and specials. Something for everyone. Having bought drinks, our food order was taken at our table which is more relaxing than having to queue again to place an order. There was a slight confusion over whether a simple variation to the set dish could be available (potatoes rather than salad) was quickly sorted. Inspite of being busy, our food arrived quite quickly and was well cooked and of good quality. By the time we had finished our main courses, the restaurant had become less populated and so we decided to prolong the opportunity for more conversation over dessert.

Great food, great service and great ale, so what more do you want? We all like a meal out so to come away feeling full, happy and not over charge is a result 👍 We will be back....

Just had another lovely meal at the Old Down Inn. We took our grandson and his girlfriend for an evening meal, all the food was excellent with a warm welcome from Maxine and her staff as always. We will be back!

My wife and I have passed this pub many times but it didn’t look too inviting. We arranged to dine there with some friends. The service and food were superb.

Ample of parking space when we arrived. Pub was pretty busy for a a Tuesday night which l thought is always a good sign. The food was presented nicely on the plate without being over fancy. Portion size was good and food tasty. Fairly priced.

Have been visiting the old down for dinner every few weeks for the past three years and tonight was no exception the quality and price of food is amazing,Maxine and her team never fail to make you feel welcome,even when they are so busy she can always find time to say hello.

Three of us went for a mid week lunch. We arrived just after 12 and there were a few people already in. Nobody greeted us, I had to find the one waitress on duty and ask where we could sit. We waited 25 mins and nobody approached us, by which time the room had filled up. Finally I went to the bar. The poor waitress was also doing drinks. It was over 40 mins before we got an order placed. In the end a simple one course meal took over 1hr 30mins. Two of us wanted the Steak and Ale pie which was both on the menu AND the special's board. Unfortunately none were available, so we were, again, disappointed. Given the pub has a number of dining rooms and probably more than 30 tables you certainly wouldn't recommend anyone to go unless they had all day to eat. Other than that, the food we ended up with was slighly better than average and reasonably priced.

During our holiday in the UK we simply loved the history and century's old buildings. This small pub has three or four dining areas and in 1774 one could get a meal for 1 Pound. We had a delicious meal - Brocolli and Stilton Soup, Thai Rd Curry and Pie of the Day.

Whether your thing is good value food, real ale, nice surroundings or engaging staff, this is a pretty good place to be.

I would like to say what an wonderful experience we had today for Sunday/father's day lunch. We were a party of 11 and the service was amazing. Table ordering for drinks swiftly followed by orders taken for food. The food was excellent quality,very large portions and they catered for all tastes and additional extras. The proof was the 3 year old who completely cleared his large plate of sausage(2)chips and peas. The icing on the cake was the thoughtful gift given to the Fathers. We will certainly be back.

We arrived at the Old Down Inn on Saturday 18th May for a surprise birthday meal for our friend. The welcome and service at the Inn was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble, the food for 30 plus guests all arrived punctually, hot and very well presented, so much so we popped back on the 22nd to see what it was like for 4 people. The food was excellent, the Guinness was the best away from Dublin sensible price with fantastic service.

The service was efficient, friendly and responsive to our needs making our experience happy and relaxed. One of the best venues in the locality, highly recommended!

Visited the old down with a group of friends service was excellent all our meals turned up as pre ordered , even though several of us had forgotten what was pre ordered. Food stonking and the brisket OMG Really rate the inn

Attended an 80th birthday meal with 36 other people and could not believe how awful this turned out to be. The room was very attractive despite being told that no birthday decorations would be allowed. There was no water on the tables and no glasses in the event of this being supplied. Despite pre-orders having being provided in advance of the party, there were many errors in the food provided, resulting in several people not receiving the food they had ordered. However, as no-one wanted the evening to be spoiled, they accepted the situation without complaint. Meals were brought out that had not been ordered resulting in two meals being 'extra'. The manager in charge (Ann-Marie?) announced to the whole room that these meals would have to be paid for and that a surcharge would be charged to each person to pay for this. The birthday boy was understandably quite upset. After the main course, no dessert menu was offered and when one guest asked at the bar for a pot of tea she was told this would be too much trouble and to wait for the waitress to come round and ask who wanted tea or coffee, which took another 10 minutes at least. Needless to say, none of us left a tip or will be returning!

Great real ale choices and good food menu which doesn't disappoint when served, all hosted by a Landlady with a real character. Well worth a visit.

Saturday lunchtime was quite busy. So much so that we had to ask 3 times for a jug of water and then only 2 glasses were brought. My own chicken stuffed with leeks and wrapped in bacon was overcooked. Everyone else had a very good meal. The pub itself was.well decorated and bright. Very nice.

Invited to celebrate our friends Golden Weddimg we were treated to an excellent roast dinner. With good beer and great service from all the staff.

First visit here in a long while. Beautiful decor with lots of quirky items to delight our eye. Certainly a talking point. Greeted by resident parrot whilst sinking into luxurious carpet. Several entry points off the hall, we followed 'Restaurant/Bar' signs. Popped in here on a Monday having been recommended by a friend. Reasonably busy, but still a few tables available at 12.45. Selected table 11 & went to bar via the 'Specials' board. Roast of the Day & Soup of the day quoted, plus a variety of items to choose from. A wide choice of other dishes listed on our table menu. Chose Roast Pork & Sausage & Mash with Peas & Onion Gravy. Both delicious, hot & excellent value. Plenty of veg with the roast, served separately - enough for two. Generous, lovely pudding portions - asked for extra cream & we got an ample jug each! Loved our time here. Friendly & helpful staff. Everywhere was spotless, including the loos. Large car park, ideal for meeting up with friends. Judged a delightful experience, all for less than £15 each, including soft drinks. Brilliant! Will be going again soon

We arrived exactly on the time we booked our table for.There wasn't anybody to greet us/show us to our table (take drink orders) When we were shown to our table,the wait began,I'm use to server approaching the table within 5 mins to check if drinks are required as we make our selection of the meal wanted.Our wait was much longer at 20+ minutes,the restaurant was reasonably busy which may have been the cause.The meals we selected were excellent & brought to the table together,one of our party ordered the mixed grill,it was massive as was the plate it was served on,if you are serious meat eater then this is for you.My chilli beef stir fry with rice (from the specials board) was very tasty with tender beef strips & crisp vegetables great flavour.Other selections made were well received (Steak & Kidney Pie & Cod Loin) Puddings, Apple & Blackberry Crumble,the fruit was a bit too firm & there was a bit too much cream.The Pavlova was perfect.

First impression count- the welcome was warm, the pub was cosy and the food was superb. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone in the area. Hubby had cheesy garlic bread- delicious, we followed that with chicken stuffed with leeks and fillet steak medallions in red wine and mushroom sauce- both very tasty indeed. Pudding was sticky toffee pud with ice cream- service was very good

Tuvimos un almuerzo para el Día de las Madres aquí, éramos seis y todos disfrutamos nuestra comida, cinco con la carne asada y uno con el salmón. A las mamás se les dio una planta con flores que era un toque encantador.
