The Garden Room was the perfect location for the Reception after my Mother's Funeral. Karin and other staff went above and beyond making the afternoon special for us. I could not have asked for more.

The new no dogs rule now means we have to forgo their excellent breakfast and go the the nearby Surrey Hills Cafe. Given how every other family has a dog and that they have a large pet section I can't understand why they would alienate such a large number of their customers. It's a shame as it's a lovely place.

Heads up. Dogs no longer allowed inside. We stayed to eat (outside in the rain) because we love it here, we would usually meet the family 10 of us every Synday. But the new policy of no dogs has now moved us to Newbridge garden center. While we were there, in just 30 mins we counted 26 people turned away or told to eat outside. Lovely garden centre, so disappointed over the policy change.

Booked afternoon tea for 2. Next time we will just purchase things separately. The sandwiches and scones were good (although more variety of sandwiches would be good, not just 2 fillings), the pieces of cake dry and uninspiring, and the Eton Mess either had no meringue or was prepared too far in advance and the meringue had dissolved. I was shocked to find that the price has risen from £22 last summer to £29.95. The service was excellent as ever, but won't be having the afternoon tea again.

So impressed, well done Old Barn Nurseries at Dial Post. Lovely big car park with generous spaces, nice pleasant walk through store to very impressive dinning area. The staff here are so welcoming and very well trained which makes for easy ordering of food and served to our table swiftly with no delays. Can recommend the small bottles of Prosecco to accompany meals, we went for the breakfast and ordered x2 bottles of Fizz (very light and extremely nice chilled) with a full English with scrambled egg / toast with butter and the pancakes with syrup and fruit along with two generous cappuccino coffees all for £25, The whole experience was five star ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Key points All our food was well cooked and good quality products used which certainly delivered on flavour. The restaurant is light and airy and spotless, with lots of busy staff that are so helpful. Toilets spotless. Can’t wait to come back and if you use the app you can often get two hot drinks for the price of one which is always helpful. Thank you for an awesome breakfast 🙏

Popped in on a wet miserable day to cheer myself up after a rubbish few days. Ordered 2 hot drinks and a Victoria Sponge cake. Instantly regretted the choice of cake once it was at the till, it was half the size of all the other cakes, it also looked wet, Anyway I took it to the table, didn’t even eat it, it became very obvious that it wasn’t a fresh cake, infact I suspect it was one of these long life off the shelf box cakes, it looked like it had some sort of syrup poured onto to make it moist, the top half was stale, the bottom wet. The “cream” inside wasn’t the usual quality of a fresh cake with butter cream, more the longlife cream that’s in longlife cakes! Really disappointing and actually a total waste of money as the cake ended up being left with one mouthful out of it.

We often come here for breakfast, lunch or coffee and a cake as it's fairly local to us. It only dawned on us this morning to actually get a review posted. This cafe / restaurant is absolutely amazing, always impeccably clean, staff are always extremely friendly and helpful and the food and drink is always very good, promptly served and hot on arrival. There is always a special on the board for lunch and as yet, we have never found anything to be less than brilliant here. Definitely well worth a visit, loads of parking and a good sized garden centre too for a look around even if not in need of anything. Well doneTates!

Large garden centre with plenty of products. Surprised they don't have much in the aquarium department. The restaurant (very clean) has been totally renovated but it doesn't have the atmosphere it used to have its soulless. The coffee is the worst I've ever tasted (& I've tasted some bad ones). The scones are the biggest and best we've experienced.. The manager (Paul Smyth) in the garden centre was really helpful and Sue was lovely.

This place always used to be a great little spot but now the extension has quadrupled it in size it feels like it has lost the quality aspect despite prices being high. Many staff members were miserable and appear to have lost the ability to remember basic manners such as ; " please" and "thankyou" . We have been going to Tates garden centres for some years now. Most times we go, we have a meal in the restaurant. We’ve never been disappointed, great meals, nice selection, always hot, and welcoming staff. I previously wrote a review on the Old Barn, as we were so pleased that they’ve been taken over by Tates. We had a meal in there just before it had finished being refurbished. And it was fantastic. I had put a review on this, but now of course it is all newly refurbished, with an outside playground for children, and outside eating area.Well to be honest, I didn’t think it could be any better than when we visited before the refurbishment. Then we went last week, and was absolutely blown away. I was very concerned about going out for a meal, as this would be my first time going out, after months of lockdown. But my worries were soon put to rest. Absolutely fantastic, felt very very safe. I suffer from severe anxiety, and I am disabled, with very little immunity. Was slightly concerned, as had read a review, about someone that wouldn’t go back due to it not being very Covid friendly. I don’t know whether this has been addressed, but it was very Covid friendly to me. Screens between every table, which were way above our heads, I’m 6 foot. Social distancing very good. One-way system. All staff wearing protective gear. Also all staff so helpful, and very friendly. They were happy to do anything, to make our visit as easy, and safe, as possible. They are running a full menu. Which we were surprised by, but very happy with, as with the Covid situation we thought it would be a reduced menu. So I can’t praise them enough for that. The food arrived piping hot, good size portion, and nice and fresh. Food all cooked to order. My Mum and I, had steak and kidney suet pudding, I had chips, fresh veg, and lots of gravy with mine. Mum had it how it came, with boiled new potatoes and veg. Dad had scampi, chips, and peas, which he said was very enjoyable. I then also added 3 Eccles cakes, to take home. As I can never go to Tates, and not have my Eccles cake. But the dinner was so filling, I couldn’t eat it there and then. Also, we can highly recommend the Ham, Egg and Chips. I have a side of Baked Beans with mine. I’d like to give a special mention to Karin, she is an absolute delight. She looked after us so well. And nothing was too much trouble. A genuine lovely lady, who keeps the restaurant running so smoothly. The new playground that has been built for the children, looks absolutely brilliant. There’s also another little café, where you can just sit and have a coffee, cup of tea, maybe and a bit of cake. Maybe even an Eccles, laugh out loud. Anyway, in my point of view, as a disabled person with a very low immunity system, I found this a very friendly, safe environment. I would highly recommend a visit to the restaurant, if you are visiting the shop. I can guarantee, you will NOT, be disappointed. Me, my mum and my dad, will certainly be visiting a lot more often. And I’d like to congratulate all at the Tates for the hard work that I have put in to making this restaurant look so lovely and welcoming, and also very safe, with the Covid situation we are in at the moment. We look forward to seeing you all soon.I’d just like to add, I am in no way connected to this company, or have any incentives, or initiative to make me say what I have said. It is a genuine review, as I say, from a disabled person, with a lot of health issues, and I hope this will help you make a decision, to make the visit, and enjoy a lovely meal, at Tates Old Barn nurseries.

Sorry but I am going to disagree with some of the comments on here about Covid 19 applications... entered via main entrance & signed in on app scanning.... we were just having coffee & cake so went to the left hand side ...... no signs on floor showing social distancing .... screens on the left with a narrow space to people queueing so customers with food/drink more or less touching you as they went past..... at the till area you actually had to go past the till to see what cakes were on offer so poor layout.... then confronted with people coming in a door in that area so not entering through the main door..... while seated observed people coming in main entrance without signing in at all as supervisor was dealing with other customers....entrance to the toilets was congested to say the least..... on the plus side cleaning regime looked excellent...... I feel the screens need removing opposite the counter as cramming in a couple of tables just doesn’t work & would improve the flow of customers coming away from pick up area.

I treated myself to coffee and a slice of gateau in the newly refurbished restaurant earlier today and was most impressed with the new decor. All was going swimmingly well until I encountered the young man supplying coffee, he was working alongside a charming young lady who very kindly went off to find me a tray. He was unpleasant about her which, in my opinion was most unprofessional, perhaps somebody in management could give him some tips on customer care? In fact he should follow the example of the young lady who found me a tray! Apart from this blip I was impressed with the service I refs and would have given a five star rating had it not been for the unpleasant encounter.

We visited today and had lunch at the cafe part that opened either today or yesterday. Lovely sausage rolls and pastie. There was a slight mistake with our order and the lady running the cafe dealt with it brilliantly. Sorted out the minor error and gave us free cakes for our trouble. Wasn't a problem to us but great customer service and cakes were nice. I've got to say that there are too many moaning Minnie's re social distancing. If someone is really that concerned then they shouldn't be visiting busy cafes and garden centres. I've recently been on the end of someone moaning (at a different venue) that I wasn't six feet away. It was 5ft 6in. Asked her why she was there if that paranoid. She reported me to a manager and was happy to stand a foot from him.Anyhow I digress . Popped in for lunch today to see the new restaurant, have to say the food was excellent if just a little expensive for what we had. What made me really uncomfortable was the attempt to maintain social distancing. We were met at the door by a staff member who asked us to register on the app then join the queue to be served. This is where we started to feel uncomfortable as although we were wearing a face mask, the man behind us was also wearing a face mask but he could not manage to keep a safe distance he just kept getting closer, we also noticed there were people sitting very close to the queue waiting to be served. When we asked for a soft drink, we were directed to the chilled cabinet that was unfortunately back up the queue that had formed behind us so we didn't bother. Some of the tables were very close together with an attempt to screen them from each other using very small perspex screens that are just not big enough. Once you are sat at your table the screen is barely shoulder height. Then people started moving about without face masks over their face, we watch a member of staff talking to a lady who had her mask under her chin but no where near her mouth & nose so what's the point. Sadly we will not be going back under the current circumstances which is a shame as the new restaurant is beautifully, but we felt uncomfortable. 16/10/2020.

We wander up to the restaurant ready to take a seat outside as we had our pooch with us, but a lady came out and greeted us and informed us that there were tables available in the doggy area that we could sit at. We were quite pleased about this as it was starting to rain and get a little chilly. We entered the restaurant and were greeted by some very friendly staff who showed us where to sit. We chose what we wanted and I went up to the counter to order. It was very well organized and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Our lunch didn't take long to arrive. I had a cheese and ham toastie and my husband had a tuna and onion panini, both very delicious. One of the staff came over and made a fuss over the dog and we were saying how lovely it was in there. She explained that it was their first day open and there was still work going on to open the coffee area. This did not affect our lunch even though we were sitting quite near to this area. The restaurant has been very well organized and the tables are separated very well. Was a great experience and we will definitely be returning for lunch.

We thought we would stop off on the way home and see the changes but large outside development taking place which looks likely to be a new cafe/restaurant, outdoor children’s etc.In the meantime there is a temporary mobile coffee/food stand.Prices were high but in fairness the flapjacks were of good size and home make. However my cappuccino was very expensive for £2.80 served in a near espresso sized cup. That was a bit mean.I can only see this place being of high prices in the future so we will probably avoid.

Popped in for coffee with some friends as been a while for a catch up......... let’s just say I feel sorry for the staff!!!! The place is cold and dirty the toilets are shocking! What has happened to the original Old Barn! It’s nice to see some familiar faces with the original old barn staff (which was the only good thing about this visit!) but they don’t seem their usual happy selves though They seemed to be very rushed and stressed but nice to see they are all still doing their best to keep smiling, I can’t imagine it’s easy to smile with shambles around you. Understand massive refurb going on........ but is it necessary what was wrong with the way it was? Furniture?????? What’s with that? The barn has lost its vintage feel, the warm the cosy the history look now it looks cheap, cold and slung together! Quite a few new members for staff just standing around and leaving most of the work/if not all of the work to the original staff, (Till and drinks staff also clearing tables quickly before the next customer arrives to be served!) I would say it looks understaffed but if several weren’t standing around the ones already working in an area wouldn’t have to jump off to cover other areas! In a nutshell I can’t see myself and the girls returning to what used to be a beautiful place with friendly welcoming staff (friendly and welcoming staff used to work in the garden centre as Well, to keep this short and sweet but they look like robots, no one smiles and it seems it’s a chore if a customer asks for help!) Good luck to the Original Old Barn staff you were always great keep up the hard work!

Was a regular visitor to the garden centre and the restaurant. When Tates first took it over the food was very good. As a vegetarian there is very little to choose from, so I was delighted when veganuary happened. I had one vegan meal which was the chick pea curry whichwas really good if not very spicy. I was looking forward to more. Unfortunately when February came vegans are no longer catered for, only mushroom wellington which doesn't appeal. So today I had the macaroni cheese which was appalling, the pasta was overcooked and hard, swamped with melted cheese, which was hard and inedible. Served with 2 tiny slices of bread. Used to get some salad and 2 slices of garlic bread, but not any more. For £8 it was extremely poor. My husband had the cod and chips and the fish was good but the chips warmed up and not very nice. The service was friendly and efficient, but the food leaves a lot to be desired. Will not be eating here again.

Visited a few weeks ago to see how the refurbishments were going and to say hello to Karin as she is now at the Old Barn instead of South Downs, Hassocks. We were just going to have coffee but decided to have breakfast as well. So pleased we did. Everything on the plate was perfectly cooked, arrived hot and tasted fantastic. Eggs done sunny side up, a runny yolk and no brown or burnt thin crust around the edges that you sometimes find - just perfect (definitely to my liking anyway). We asked if we could have toast on one plate instead of hash browns or beans - not a problem. The service was quick and all the staff really friendly and very helpful. Thank you Karin and your team for looking after us so well. Shall definitely be visiting again.

The Old Barn used to be a lovely place but the new owners have ruined it. I visited it today and the food was poor value and had very little taste. Everything seemed of average quality at best. A redeeming feature were the staff who appeared polite and helpful, if very rushed. The atmosphere left a lot to be desired. I was in the temporary? prefab room which was cold, draughty and had no views outside the windows. The tables wobbled and so did the floor every time someone went past. Lastly I tried to use the toilets only to find they were all being used and a queue of four in front of me. Overall a poor experience which I obviously cannot recommend.

We are regular visitors to old barn since Tates bought it from Wyevale.....and gosh...what an Improvement....the nursery side is amazing, so much to choose from, and plants are very well looked after. But, our favourite part of old barn is the restaurant....firstly the staff are lovely, the food great and they have now started making their own scones...and I consider myself the ‘scone queen’...they are delicious. Thank you Old Barn.

Been visiting Old Barn many years now. Never really ate there, as food wasn’t to our taste. We then noticed it changed to Tates Garden Centre. Well, we’re big fans of all The Tate Garden Centres. Especially Southdowns. But now upon finding they own Old Barn, well lots more visits to the restaurant are in order. Meals are just fantastic. Good selection. Small or large appetite. You’ll find lots of yummy options. Food always piping hot. Good portions. Good menu selection. Reasonably priced too. And their Eccles Cakes. Well, what can I say. If I’m full from my Ham, Egg, Chips, and a side of Baked Beans, I’ll take my Eccles Cake home. The Staff are so polite and well dressed. And I can’t praise Karin enough. She looks after you so well. And is always on the ball, making sure everything is running smoothly. You may think they closed due to improvements being made. But, they are open. And are coping very well. I can’t recommend them highly enough. Give them a go. You won’t regret it. Already planned our next visit.

After being told that Karim from hassock garden centre had gone over to sort out the cafe at Old Barn. This need to be sorted and what a lovely surprise how much she has sorted in a short time. The Staff looked alot more happier then the last time we where there. The standard of food has gone up and the cafe itself has been improved to. Much more personal then the long table and uncomfortable chairs.

Popped in for a treat of coffee and cake, big mistake! Thought Fawlty Towers had resurrected itself. Was served coffee and gateau. The gateau was riddled with mould!! Complained and an apology was forthcoming but a decision not to visit again was an easily made.

Service was OK but the food was cold, uncooked and awful, I think an over use of the microwave was also a factor I have been going here for many years but will not go again. Such a shame as it was always a nice place to visit. also the decor has been redone and it just does not work with plain cold walls and very loud floral print used on the furniture.

Visited here on Sunday lunchtime. Very very long queues for food and drinks. Only one roast dinner option for Sunday lunch and the rest of the menu was identical to the other Tates garden centres.

Transition is everywhere following the takeover by Tates. The separate coffee shop has gone and the restaurant has a temporary front extension and rear toilets to be able to cover the numbers. We had a pleasant enough lunch from an identical menu to Southdowns.

We popped in for a quick lunch, unfortunately quick turned to a long wait, but worth it in the end. The experience was made most pleasant by the delightful STEPHANIE who served us. It was her 2nd day and what a lovely sense of humour.......long may she last,a prize employee!!

Called in for lunch on the way home from a couple of days away. Quite shocked at the change in the place and the lack of toilet facilities was causing quite a problem. Outside the main restaurant, there was one toilet for all...men, women, disabled and baby change!!! There were plenty of staff but all too busy to engage with the public!! Young man who served us on the till was sullen and not happy. Sad as we often popped in here, will return in a few months to see if it has improved.

Went for coffee at the Old Barn restaurant, and, oh dear, what has happened to the place! The lovely old pine tables and chairs have been replaced with the most hideous cheap tables, plastic covered seats....and where did they find that awful floral fabric for the seat backs?

I have eaten st Old Barn many times before it became part of the Tates group but today made me think I will never go again. Lots of empty tables but lots of uncleared tables and some were dirty. The decor is terrible and I really miss the lovely stripped pine tables. We were then told that there was a 1 HOUR wait for hot food and when we said we only wanted a sandwich, the response was the same - 1 HOUR!!! Needles to say we left and I really doubt I will return. Come on Tates, you can do better than that!

Driven passed this pub at least 30 times on way to Gatwick over the years but never stopped. Visited on Thursday 26th September at 1:30pm. Reasonable sized car park with lots of spaces. Pub has oak beams which gives it a real traditional vibe. Didn’t book a table but was able to be seated straight away. Good choice on the menu. We had ciabatta baguettes (one halumi one sausage/onion) washed down with a Prosecco and a beer. Service good and baguettes only £9 each. View out the back of the pub over the South Downs is stunning! Worth knowing that last food orders are 2pm for lunch. Would definitely return.

Free entry to explore the marvellous gardens at Leonardslee when booking the Ultimate experience. A thorough wine tasting, brilliantly conducted by 'Simba', a true credit to his profession as a sommelier. Fabulous wines and that Sabre moment when the cork is 'popped', my friend did this with such distinction. An excellent, delicious Afternoon Tea followed, nothing waste much of a problem, photo opportunity, carrot cake a welcome extra but 'Simba' created the icing on the cake. Fantastic experience.

We've visited the Boars Head a few times recently and it has been consistently excellent. Today we both had the beef bourguignon, it was delicious. A generous portion of beautifully tender beef with mash made for a great meal, dessert was an impossibility on this occasion. The welcome and service has been impeccable on every visit as well The management are clearly working hard to achieve and maintain a high standard in every aspect of what they do. We ate mid-afternoon today (Saturday) without booking but I'd suggest that booking is essential for lunch and evening meals at the weekends. We have also had the Sunday lunch on a couple of occasions and that has been to the same standard.

Every time I order the quality is always consistent. Particularly recommend the cookie doughs. Why go to a sloppy chain when you can support a fantastic independent!
