Unfortunately we felt on this occasion the food really was not up to the usual standard - whitebait over cooked - chips not their usual crispy delicious standard - but everyone has an off day and we said it would not deter us from returning HOWEVER we found out as we were leaving that after 14 years of trading the Orchard is due to close at the end of September 😔 So sad as , as a family some who are no longer with us it was always are “go to” place for a good quality home cooked meal . So what ever the owners plans are for the future we wish them good luck 😋

What amazing service and attention to detail!! Being coeliac and requesting gluten free food, the manager checked all ingredients on the different pickles and sauces to make sure the food was safe. Absolutely brilliant, thank you!! The meals were great and very copious.

Popped in for an afternoon coffee and cake. A few other customers present, very strange atmosphere, felt flat and subdued. Staff didn't smile or make small talk, odd style of interaction and poor interpersonal skills. I wonder why they bother ?! Cake was OK, on the dry side. Really strange ambience, felt like I was in a nursing home, all a bit depressing to be honest.

The Orchard for several years has been a regular venue to meet a friend for breakfast or lunch. The customer service they provide is five star and the quality of the food is excellent and good portion size. Atmosphere is comfortable and homely and prices are very reasonable. During the warmer months it’s lovely to sit and dine in the orchard adjoining the restaurant. It’s perfect for breakfast, lunch and dinner or just popping in for tea and cake. We have never been disappointed and would definitely recommend

We ate here last night and it was absolutely wonderful. Good old fashioned food cooked to perfection. The menu is extensive and varied with all the old time favourites that you never see in pubs and restaurants anymore. It does get busy at times so it is worth prebooking to save disappointment. This little restaurant has the charm of old fashioned service. It is also on a lovely south downs walkway that is popular with walkers and cyclist. Well worth a visit and a lovely stroll after or before is a must. If you are reading this then give it a try - you will not believe how good it is! The car park is quite large so no more struggling to park. There is a disabled access slope. The restaurant is a fair size and they can cater for parties as long as they have enough notice. Ideal for family meetings, business meetings or just a few friends getting together. Portions are generous and I defy anyone not to find anything on the extensive menu they dont like. Go on .... fall in love with all the old favourites. I can't wait to go back and everyone I have introduced to this little gem always returns. Sunday roast is a must too.

Such a delightful experience from beginning until the end. We were greeted with a nice warm welcome. Charlotte was a lovely friendly and professional waitress, nothing was too much trouble and she was very attentive without being invasive. Her personality shone through. We thought the meal was good value for money and there was a great choice on the menu. My husband would definitely recommend the fish and chips, which had a lovely crisp batter and not swamped in chips. I had a lovely tasty quiche Lorraine salad and we both enjoyed the rice pudding. Just the right portions of everything we ate. We would recommend the Orchard to anyone and we will be back!

We stopped off during our bike ride as this cafe is right next to the Downslink. We sat in the lovely old orchard garden to eat coffee and cake , which was fine. However, we kept noticing the smell of sewage which was very unpleasant. We then noticed the septic tank was right next to the garden with the two covers not properly fitted on top of the tank. No wonder there was a smell! PLEASE sort out your sewerage problem or we won't be back.

Passed this place many times and thought we'd try it, pulled into here Tuesday for lunch to find it closed. Fair enough, everybody deserves a day off but signs on A boards clearly stated place was open and permanent signage also says open 7 days a week. Change the signage, take in the A boards to let people know you're closed or is it too much effort? As we pulled out of the car park another car was coming in. Sure this is repeated every Tuesday.

I visited for early lunch with Mum on a Saturday. It is easy to locate on the A272 and there is plenty of parking. We were welcomed and seated straight away and our drinks arrived just a few minutes later. There is quite a large and varied menu selection with a choice of portion size which is a good Idea. I went for a jacket potato with prawns. I didn't have to wait long and it arrived garnished with a small salad. There was a generous portion of prawns and the salad was fresh but the "jacket" on my potato (my favourite part!) wasn't crispy, but was limp, as though it had been microwaved, and different parts were lukewarm and hot.My ultimate favourite dessert is treacle tart so I chose this...it tasted nice, but the filling had a dry consistency and didn't have that unique treacle tart taste. The decor is quite dated and could do with updating, although everywhere looked clean. The staff were all pleasant but I was a little disappointed with my food.

Went here with a group of friends. We were all rather disappointed with the menu on offer. The choice appears to be quite large but unfortunately it is more a choice of different mains with a limited choice of the same vegetables which did not look that appetising. My husband's steak was very overlooked ( he asked for medium) and tough and dried out to the extent he couldn't eat it. The new potatoes served needed butter and a friend's gammon was smothered in parsley sauce. It would have been far nicer if the sauce had been served in a jug. It isn't obvious from the special board which vegetables are included which means you need to keep asking the waitress. The service was quite slow and not particularly friendly. This wasn't nearly as good as we remembered from a few years ago. It all seems a bit dated really. A great pity but I think the standard of food we expect from eating out in this price range has risen over the years with more choice and better value for money provided by more establishments. Sorry

My mum and I called in this restaurant for the first and last time during a trip from Kent to Arundel. On arrival it was more like entering a cake sale at the Woman's Institute and we were shown to a table which was dirty and tatty. We were given the specials board which was basically all fish dishes and decided on reading the menu which we thought was over priced for such a dive, decided on an afternoon tea. The service was slow and a pot of very weak tea arrived approximately 20 minutes before the food. The afternoon tea consist of one round of sandwiches, one scone with butter only and one slice of cake with a pot of tea for one costing nearly £11.00 per person. The choice of sandwich filling was poor and the crusts were extremely tough. The scones were dry and hard and we informed the waitress of this who provided a replacement which was just as disgusting and inedible. Both the carrot cake and chocolate cake were dry and stale. The portion of chips we ordered never arrived and we were charged for these. I reluctantly paid for this awful experience and was extremely surprised at the waitress and chef's attitude when we complained about the very poor standard of food and hygiene observed. I'm not surprised the place was virtually empty. Save your money and health and buy a supermarket meal deal instead of attempting this joke of an afternoon tea.

Good selection on the menu and specials board, but maybe this is where the problem lay. Refine the menu and focus on the quality not quantity. Lovely young waiter, who left us to chat and didn't rush or hover. The food was poor, I had chicken and leek pie, the filling may have been very nice, but such thick pastry that you wouldn't know. Mash potato definitely home made with a desperate need to be mashed, more lumps than soft and fluffy. The veg plentiful and served separate, but I have never been served yellowing broccoli ( that's the sort of thing you do at home when you don't want to throw out the veg that's lurked in the fridge a day or two too long.) The quiche, seemed to go down well and the chips nice and chunky. Dessert, the treacle tart lacked the balance of sweetness with the citrus cutting through, far too much of the breadcrumb filling detracting from the sweet gooiness you expect. My pannacotta, was served with sliced strawberries, but would have smashed the window if I had thrown it- tip for chef go easy on the gelatine, definitely not a pannacotta with a wobble. I like the idea of 2 sizes of meals offered.Enjoyable evening due to the company not the food.

Not a local girl serving us but she took great care at writing everything down and cross checking our orders; so everything was correct ;and as the meal went on she kept popping back to ask if everything was OK. The menu is a good starting place because the main courses are available in two sizes. Particularly older folk do not necessarily want a plate FULL of food and we were all happy on the smaller versions of our food. Two soups (and lots of other things + a specials board) were on offer and all three of us went for the leek and potato soup which surprised us all because instead of just being a whizzed up soup it was effectively a bowl of pieces of leek and potato in a soup; very much a home made offering and very good too. The three main course were all very satisfactory and tasty too. I was less happy than others with my lasagne being served with a salad - but I'm not a saladlover anyway. One quiche came with salad but the sausages came with a dish of hot veg.Liquid refreshment is all out of bottles, so the beery fellows had a glass of the house red while I managed a generous bottle of cider; half a pint would have been enough.Puddings were had by all of us and then a couple of coffees.Including chatting we probably took a couple of hours. No tip included in the bill so we left some cash for the staff ie cash all round.A bonus is there is a slope for people who don't like the steps at the front door.

We have passed this restaurant many times and decided to call in for a late lunch. We should have realised by the empty car park that it may have given a hint. We slowly pushed the door and walked into an empty unwelcoming space. Were we welcomed by the patron? No!.. The only staff member in the restaurant continued to wipe tables and told us from a distance to find a table! I think at that point we should have up sticks and found a more welcoming hostelry, but hunger had kicked in. Where was " Have you had a long journey ?" " Isn't the weather terrible" " Would you like a drink?" "Would you like to see the menu?" No, sadly she just continued her clearing and when she had finally finished she came over to us. We ordered a couple of lunches a red wine and a Becks Blue. The food arrived. My roast beef was ok but very reminiscent of a truck driver meal but limited in quantity. My fiancée's skate wing was a fair sized portion. The " vegetables" arrived which included yellowing broccoli, a few carrots and frozen peas. Bit like a school dinner really but at just over £35 very poor value. We were never asked if the meal was ok so we bravely finished in the drab environment, waited for ever to pay the bill and even longer for our change. Frankly a meal at the Crown Carvery would have been better, cheaper, more wholesome and in a more welcoming restaurant. Will we return NO .. So sad with a bit of effort and customer service training it could be so good, it's in a nice area and there are very few others in the area.

Phoned in advance which was just as well because they where booked up until 1.30pm. This was fine as we were not in a rush, so booked for 1.30 plus. Arrived and was immediately greeted by a smiling waitress who showed us straight to our table, (I'm still sitting as I type) and given a menu. I had Steak & Kidney, Carol had Roast Beef. Both were served within 15 mins and where to die for. We both fancied Pud so indulged ourselves. Price was very reasonable and the staff where great ambassadors for the restaurant. We will be back as we are only in Horsham.

We visited for the first time today, we live close by and have passed this place for a number of years. First of all they were busy but the staff appeared rather untrained. The girl who welcomed us almost looked supprised when we asked for a table. Having just walked in, it was not an unreasonable request. Next the menu looked good! We ordered and unfortunatly the dish I had asked for had run out (a good sign of 'Home cooked food'). Our starters, Avacado Prawns and Squid rings were out of a packet, I can forgive the prawns (a little on the small size) but the Squid was right out of Iceland or Brakes. Next the main course was totaly underwhelming, the lamb chop I had was overdone and the mint gravey was out of a packet. The Venison looked and tasted good, (so somethings were 'home cooked'. The Veg was awful and I think had been hanging about, keeping warm for hrs. The chips were dry, the carrots soggy, the parsnips soggy. All in all a real dissapointment. I won't blame the staff, they were doing their best and were very apoligetic but they were woefully untrained. We shan't be back, one bill of £40 for 2 very poor starters and 2 dissapointing main courses was enough for us.

Stopped for tea and cake or scones. Service was good and correct. Nice and clean and the pots of tea were fine. However the scones were very poor. Obviously frozen and then probably defrosted in a microwave. Very small portions of jam. Have been before and then had cake which was good. Shame about the scones.

Visited this restaurant twice within one week and were very pleased both times. The staff were very welcoming on both occasions and were happy to talk about the history of the building which was once a railway station. The first time we went it was a Sunday and we chose the Roast Lamb dinner which was generous in size with really tasty local vegetables after this we were tempted by the dessert menu, two of us having the apple crumble and one having the Crème Brule both delicious. This restaurant is very clean and good value for money with helpful and friendly staff. The second time we visited was on a weekday and again were very pleased by the meal and service. This is a very handy place to stop for refreshment and has the benefit of a good size carpark and an orchard to sit out in during the warm weather. We will certainly go again.

Have stopped here on a number of previous occasions, this time was afternoon tea for two.Excellent choice of both traditional 'afternoon tea' and some creative variations on a theme. We selected Victoria sponge and toasted tea cake with lashings of butter and jam .... and of course a large pot of tea.Thoroughly enjoyed these choices! We will be back to try much more of the varied menu.

We stopped here for breakfast to break up our journey. Our friends had been here before but we hadn't and we were really pleased we stopped. A shame it's so far away but next time we're passing through we will certainly stop again, hopefully around dinner time next as their menu for dinner looked really good too.

We regularly go for breakfast here. Plenty of choice. We always have the full English which is made from local produce and is very tasty. We have never had to wait longer than it takes to cook it and is brought out to you nice and hot. Service is always prompt and all staff are friendly and polite. Nothing is too much trouble. We have recommended to friends who regularly go now too.

Wonderful friendly service and great well cooked fish and chips, with good prices. Spotlessly clean, But I'm afraid it was disappointing inside, no character or charm. Plain painted walls and the place had no atmosphere. It wasn't a good choice for an evening, maybe better if its lunch or coffee. Couldn't fault the food, service or the great choice on the menu board.

Called in for lunch 10/09/15 and was very impressed with meal good food presented well and delicious. Called in yesterday ordered the same dish and oh what a disappointment no flavour to the meal and a cut down version of the same dish a year ago, deep fried brie (little or no flavour) had to request coleslaw (this was included in 2015) also the salad garnish with the lunch 2015 consisted of chopped pepper green yellow and red, sliced cucumber, tomato quartered, and shredded lettuce 2016, garnish was a few bits of shredded lettuce and two slices of cucumber and half a tomato quartered .Because there was no flavour to the cheese the food tasted inferior and it did not stand up to comparison to the year before.

Popped in for an early snack lunch just before 12 noon. As lunch isn't available till 12, went for the bacon sandwich of the breakfast menu. Asked for crispy bacon. The sandwich was delicious and the bacon crispy. Also had a really hot cappucino. Staff very polite and service quick. Sat out in the Orchard in the sun and it was lovely and peaceful.

On returning from Gatwick Airport due to a problem, we took the wrong turning and drove past the Orchard restaurant. As we were hungry, we decided to turn round and go back to the restaurant. We were not disappointed in doing so. The place is a bit dated but very clean. The staff are extremely polite and efficient. We were asked which table we would like. The restaurant had diners eating and more came in as we were eating. We were shown the menu on the board and asked if we would like a drink. My wife chose tea and as I was driving asked for coffee. We then ordered our meals. Well, when they came, I was amazed. The food was excellent and warranted an Egon Ronny star. The meals were absolutely perfectly cooked. The cod morne was first class and the chicken and mushroom pie.perfect. We did manage a dessert. My wife had Rhubarb crumble and I had cheese and biscuits. Would I recommend this Restaurant. DEFINITLY. From a scruffy Lord and Lady, guys you did us proud. If we are in the area we will certainly return.

We came across this large, plainly decorated cafe in a former pub en route from London to the south coast, just off the A24 (A272 to Cowfold), and it makes a great place for lunch. Tasty home-cooked food, very good value and huge portions so you should consider the half portions on offer. Good service too. We liked it so much we stopped by on our way home as well.

On the A272, on the Coolham - Cowfold part ? Then look out for the Orchard. Unpretentious from the outside, airy, clean and bright inside. On a sunny day like today, tables in the orchard. And the breakfasts are wonderful! Toast, hot and crisp, good veggie sausages, delicious smoked salmon, mushrooms sweet and not overcooked and I reckon, one of the best black coffees around. Walk through the orchard and you are onto the old railway station and miles of walks. We love popping over for breakfast and have never been disappointed. One lunchtime I tried their whitebait - knockout!

But not a hidden gem as it is on the A272, a busy road. The building originally a late 19th century re-brick hostelry is pleasant, but somewhat self -effacing,and. hides an excellent restaurant-cafe,serving home-cooked style fare. The food we had was excellent, traditional and very tasty. Our puddings were out of this world! The two cheerful waitresses were very efficient and helpful. There is a wheelchair ramp, to the left of the entrance, and the establishment is accessible to the less mobile. The Orchard is the place to go for traditional English food, though other options are available. The menu is quite varied and pretty comprehensive for a privately run business

Nice enough pub, with a reasonable drinks selection and friendly staff. We visited for a family lunch (on recommendation) and the place is very geared up for food. However, the food is absolutely dreadful: over cooked, bland and (in the case of the bao buns that I had) inedibly dry. Seems very popular, for reasons unknown to this visitor.
