Its dining with a difference - We had read the reviews so came well prepared (definitely steer away from tight waist banded clothing ). Our Host had been very responsive to our pre-visit enquiries and , on the night , was welcoming , engaging and great company. The menu had been planned to accommodate our varying tastes and was both delicious and certainly sufficient to satisfy appetites greater than ours. That said we diligently worked our way through all courses. Overall a great experience and one we would, and indeed already have, recommended, to our friends if they are planning to stay and dine in the area .

An exceptional tasting menu experience with all dishes including elements cooked over natural flames . Atmospheric "off grid" location. Communal meal was served on a large shared table for 8 on a bring your own booze basis. Food was creative and tasty and never overpowered, where the smoked flavour enhanced and enriched the base elements. Arrive hungry and pace yourselves. Bring Tupperware for left overs too. Highly recommended.

We had no expectations, other than reading the reviews and looking at the website. If you are expecting frills then this is not for you. Set in a barn in a field above Clifford, you eat at one long table. Take your own wine. There is no shortage of food in fact you will roll out of there! Hugh has an eye for putting unexpected flavours together, one of our first courses was duck with a rhubarb sauce which just zinged together. His smoked artichoke hearts were out of this world and his red cabbage, we could not get enough of. One of our party declared the new potatoes with smoked butter the best she had ever eaten. It's not cheap at £75 a head, but the quality and sheer deliciousness of the food, not to mention the quantity make this a really worthwhile experience.

If you want delicate small portions, your food to be ‘meat and 2 veg’ with silver service, this is not the place for you. If you want your taste buds tickled and to eat food that you would not think of serving on the same day, let alone the same meal, then you are in the right place. There what appears to be a never ending flow of food appearing, Hugh explains each dish, each ingredient before you tuck in. Be warned there is a lot of food to get through. Last night we started with a (from memory) sweet potato soup with Mizo (and other things!) rich, creamy, tasted amazing. Then the 2nd starter was brought out A huge bowl of salad with artichoke hearts, fresh hummus, ham hock, a red cabbage salad with grapes and nuts, pickled carrots. Was there other bits? Probably I lost count, I know we had some of the vegetarian aubergine dish. (These dishes stayed on the table for the duration of the meal for grazing) The mains. Smoked duck breast. Hispi cabbage. Dauphinoise potatoes, mixed beetroots. Long stem broccoli. A rhubarb sauce. Desert was a layer of blueberry compote, fruits, nuts? A sweet syrup. All very rich and very sweet, but I could not stop eating it. Cheese and crackers. (Beautifully runny Brie, a Blue, a cheddar which has been wrapped in hops? By this time I was in a food coma so may have missed things. Then Hugh came round and take away food boxes were passed round to fill with whatever was left. As if you’d not had enough. Petit fours of Rich dark chocolates with praline or toffee filling. Tea, (any type available including fresh mint) coffee Then hot fresh baked cookies. Outside a bowl of marshmallows to toast on the open fire. No it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but the quality and quantity of food is excellent. Go with an open mind and an empty stomach

A wonderful concept and setting for this unusual place for an evening meal. Very convivial company. Bit underwhelmed by the food for £75/head - starters of salads and humous were wonderful but the main course - suckling pig - lacked flavour, tart tatin was average but served with fabulous sauces and the cheeses were first class. We were 20 diners in all and the food just stretched to cover hearty appetites. It would obviously work better on a warm sunny evening rather than a chilly, damp spring night. As an experience it was great but we could have eaten better for the hefty price tag.

This was a very unique and enjoyable evening, filled with excellent food and good company. The food was very tasty and of gourmet standard, with plenty to fill even the largest of appetites. The setting was magical , like a romantic medieval banquet. Candle lit and rustic. There's not many restaurants where you can converse with the chef whilst he cooks in front of you. Thank you Hugh for a very special evening.

Just wow. A culinary feast with a very talented and humble chef. It was remarkable how much Hugh did by himself, the food just kept on coming and was some of the best food I had ever tasted. Rib of beef, the most incredible artichoke and truffle tart, massive chunks of cheese, it was such a lovely surprise to not know what was going to be put down on the table. You share dishes with others on the table, it was lovely to talk to everyone. Just hope that you’re in the same night as people who really appreciate the concept and the talent on show, because it’s such an amazing shared experience. We will be back with family and friends, totally worth the 2 hour drive.

More of a banquet than a meal. Hugh is a fantastic chef who provided a vast range of food (delicious meat, vegetarian, pescatarian, and gluten-free dishes). The mushroom bread and butter pudding with mushroom sauce, and the harissa stood out for me. The icing on the cake was the take away boxes at the end. [Remind me to skip the marshmallows next time!]

We visited this restaurant after seeing all the amazing reviews on Trip Advisor. I totally agree that Hugh is very welcoming and does an amazing job at singlehandedly cooking, serving and washing up, but we both found the food distinctly underwhelming. I didn't feel that the dishes complimented each other at all; the starters consisted of rice, beetroot, pickled carrot, cold duck breast together with a hot chicken dish. It just seemed totally random. I think maybe that the whole experience is better in the summer, when you can take in the views and appreciate the 'off grid vibe' a bit more. But personally, I wouldn't recommend it on a dark wet November night.

Searched online for something different. And boy did we find it!! We arrived early, and was welcomed in with a cheery smile and a warm greeting. The food was delivered in waves. Stunning plate after stunning plate. Huge chunks of slow cooked pork, to home made rosemary bread, to roast beef sirloin. And plenty inbetween. All cooked to perfection, and masses of it. Our 13 year old can eat for all of us, and Hugh accepted the challenge. The rum sticky toffee pudding was divine, and my son was presented with 2!! He could only manage 1 - 1/2. 1-0 to Hugh! He did however, recover his appetite in time for the toasted marshmallows. A wonderful experience, with wonderful food, and a perfect host/chef. The most amazing food I think I’ve had…ever… Didn’t know what to expect but we walked across the field to a wooden hut with candles lit, open fires burning and a lovely deck with a fire pit on it. Big wooden tables… needed to be big for the amount of food!! The flavours are amazing, food is gorgeous and just keeps coming, make sure you’re hungry, don’t eat that day as you’ll need the space. Hugh was welcoming and lovely, amazingly calm even though he had to stand in the road and wave us in just before he started serving as we got lost… quite tricky to find. But what a find when you get there. After the most amazing dinner we all retired to the deck where a campfire was lit. Sat round on benches chatting on a warm summers night…just perfect, we even managed a shanty song or two. I can’t imagine how Hugh does all that on open fires… quite incredible.

Nothing to add to the other reviews. Just go. It’s wonderful. Hugh is both an excellent host and an excellent cook.

We had the chance to be seated outside for a dinner and I do find it difficult to only put 5 stars to this place.

Having been so impressed when I visited 'Off Grid Gourmet' with my Mother, in 2018, I booked a meal for my work colleagues (15+ people). We had the most fantastic evening. The food was fabulous and you simply cannot beat the location for a relaxed evening with friends and colleagues. Hugh is a great host and I can't wait to return.

We were there on a Sunday evening & there was another couple so just the 4 of us. We got on well & Hugh proved great company too. The food was plentiful & of excellent quality. We all were totally stuffed by the end of the meal. My favourite was the smoked leek dish and roast belly of pork with a rhubarb sauce. All together a great way to round off a long week end couldn't recommend the restaurant highly enough.

We had a wonderful time- Hugh was a great host and created a really enjoyable meal. The location and ambience was lovely with the opportunity to interact with the other guests which makes for an interesting and unusual evening. We will definitely visit again when we’re in the area.

Ardderchog! (Fantastic in Welsh). Hugh and his sous chef have a gift. This place is so relaxed but the food is gourmet standard. Each course was a surprise with a twist. Can’t wait to go again. Go you will be delighted.

After a full day at the Hay Festival we found ourselves negotiating the country roads to this tiny place. As advertised, diners sit together around one long table and we were extremely fortunate in finding ourselves with four 30 somethings who were the most convivial of fellow guests. We were a group of four and a mix of meat eaters and vegetarians. Hugh promised all kinds of meat although we were in fact only served a rabbit dish as a starter and two beef dishes as a main course. The food is plentiful but an improvement might be a blackboard in the room letting everyone know what was on the menu for the night and a guide to ‘pacing’ ourselves. The vegetarian food was ok given the constraints of cooking without power. This is a rural setting and a welcome change from slick restaurants and when I changed the date of my booking, Hugh could not have been more helpful.

Had a great meal of many delicious courses this evening. Salads, pickles, rabbit, duck, 2 beef dishes, vegetables, dessert, cheeses, coffee and sweets and vegetarian options for our 2 vegetarians. Hugh is a talented chef and a charming, modest host who worked tirelessly, with his equally efficient and pleasant waiter, to make our evening really great. Worth 6 stars!

We were staying on the campsite so the situation was perfect for us - as was the campsite itself - peaceful, fantastic views, couldn't ask for more. We booked Hugh's the day before and got the last four places for the Saturday evening. It was a really delightful evening with delicious food and good company and only a short walk back to our tents. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to friends and to return another day.

I’d heard a lot about ‘the pop-up’ and it lived up to the hype! Great food, seamlessly delivered by Hugh as chef and waiter; no mean feat. I highly recommend.

My girlfriend and I ate at Hugh’s table over the May bank holiday weekend. We were the only two dining and so were treated to an amazing private meal with beautiful views over the Hay valley. Hugh’s food is delicious (we had confit duck, steak, sticky toffee pudding alongside vegetables and a cheese course) and he’s also great company. Can’t recommend highly enough for anyone passing in Hay!

What a fantastic place. The Chef, Hugh, is welcoming and talented. No menu, Just a fabulous meal of top quality with local produce. Great concept and fun evening. Take your own drinks and be prepared to be spoilt with delicious food. Best to go hungry as portions are generous.

After a busy few days in the big smoke there’s nothing better than coming home & heading to Hugh’s for dinner. We must have eaten here 20 times or more and it’s always outstanding. Seasonal produce, imaginative menus, super relaxed atmosphere and a magical setting in the shed in the field! Sharing the table with 14 Swedes added to the fun, a great evening as ever - thanks Off Grid Gourmet, sterling work.

Hugh cooked for us on Sunday night. The food was wonderful - beautifully prepared and presented and plenty of it. Really enjoyed the whole night - from the walk through the orchard with a torch to watching the chef prepare and serve your dinner while you distract him with conversation!

The most wonderful dining experience. I was attending a small business meeting in Hay on Wye, our hosts generously invited us to dinner that evening. We travelled by mini buss through winter darkness, along miles of narrow lanes and then we were dropped outside the entrance to a small field. It was completely dark, we had no idea what to expect, and began to wonder if the driver had the wrong address. After a few minutes someone appeared with a torch and we were escorted across a small field through a gateway and there alongside the hedge was a long hut. Inside it was blissfully warm, a long table with benches and chairs occupied most of the building, the lower quarter was an open kitchen.

We loved Off Grid Gourmet. From the moment we arrived we felt at home in Hugh’s cabin, warm and welcoming in the candle light. The food was wonderful, the oxtail stew was delicious. Hugh told me that it took 3 days to prepare. There’s plenty of food, it’s good value for the quality and quantity of such good food. It’s an added bonus that you can bring your own alcohol. A trip to the compost toilet with a wind-up torch added to the adventure!

We had an amazing evening here. The restaurant is lovely, rustic, and cosy, with the kitchen area at one end and communal seating at the other. Getting to meet and talk with the other diners (all from different parts of the country) was such a fun part of the experience.

We've been twice now and just can't beat the experience. The food is delicious and the setting cosy and friendly. Everyone sits down at one long table and the food is passed around which makes a really nice change as you meet and chat with new and interesting people. I had to remind myself that the food was cooked entirely over open fires.... even the bread! Can't wait to come again.

Very pleasantly surprised by the food here, so I felt compelled to write a review. We have popped in quite a few times for a pint, but never for food until yesterday. The atmosphere in the pub is very sweet and cosy with fires going when it's chilly. Good real ales on tap and the bar staff have always been friendly. The food though... we were very impressed! Really tasty, properly comforting pub food, all home made and with local ingredients too! 4 of us eating, two with quite specific dietary requirements but were catered for really well. This was the only place in Kington where we could find a good selection of gluten free options! The chef came out of the kitchen to check everything was okay, talking us through some of the dishes as we were choosing and ask how the food was. He seems genuinely passionate about his food, taking pride in how he tweaks the recipes each time - this was lovely to see. If I was to nitpick, the dining room doesn't have quite the same cosy atmosphere as the main part of the pub, so some tweaking is required here. That being said, this place is truly a real gem that is worth your visit and we will definitely be eating here next time we're in town.
