Oak Room Restaurant at Appleby Manor in Eden

After completing Ben Nevis, one of our fellow friends became unwell and was unable to to continue to the other mountains to complete the ’Three peaks’ under 24hrs. We see this amazing castle on route back and checked in later that evening. The grounds & facilities are stunning. They where very accommodating with their restaurant menu. We were served with outstanding food and the personal touch especially with the Chef ‘Chris’ who actually came out and presented what we were eating which I thought was a really great touch! He then personally gave us his time to even show us around some of the castle which was a great way to fishing off our night. Our first visit even thou a short stay, I would highly recommend to stay and eat here. Thank you.

The restaurant is very relaxing and has a lovely atmosphere. We ordered the Lakeland Beef Goulash with sour cream and it was perfect. This dish was a delight, creamy beef that melted and a proper Goulash flavour. Cheese board to finish washed down with a very good medium body red wine. Once again all the waiting staff were excellent, courteous and efficient.

We travelled from Saddleworth on the Pennines to dine at Appleby Manor as we had been given a gift of a fine dining experience. We combined a nights stay and the meal with a trip to Scotland. Beautiful food and an inventive menu, the amuse-bouche was to die for! Very polite and efficient staff, we will certainly make a point of returning to dine when next in the vicinity.

Local fresh produce used .Very mixed choice on the menu of different products .Lovely desserts .Wine reasonable price .

I had the Salmon done three ways starter which was quite nice. For our mains I had steak which had to be sent back because it was bloody and I had asked for medium. My wife had a ‘rack’ of lamb - 2 small cutlets only (hardly constitutes a rack) . My wife had the lemon tart for desert which was quite nice. Service was good. Overall impression was that the food was expensive for what we had, notably £26 for two lamb cutlets plus a few veggies.

We had a wonderful meal here. Staff were friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic I took a chance on the Rabbit and it was really good. The food was hot and tasty. Will be going back.

Service was second to none. Lucy in the restaurant was very professional and friendly. The food in the restaurant was superb. We had the 4 course meal. All the food was delicious and well presented. Steaks were cooked perfectly. Loved the wine pairings to go with each dish. Breakfast the next morning was fine. Poached egg a little over done. Could do with fresh fruit salad available rather than just tinned. Other than that it was okay.

2 meals here this week, different menu each time. In ten years we have never had a disappointing meal here, and this week was no exception.

After the Bistro we decided to book in the main restaurant for our dinner on our second night, and glad we did, the food was excellent, additional touches to the quality was the canapes to start with and then the soup that was served in a cup before our starter, two courses of eceptional food, for two people, with a nice bottle of wine for £100? worth every penny.

Fine dining meal for my birthday, excellent food and service couldn’t fault it. The staff took care of us from the moment we arrived, lovely meal would recommend the salmon starter and the venison main meal.

Ate here whilst staying in the hotel and the food is delicious. Well presented using the finest ingredients and cooked to perfection. This is not a pile it high kind of establishment so don't expect belly busting portions and gravy dripping off the edge of the plate. Its fine dining at its best. The menu is not excessive but there is ample choice and each dish sounds and looks beautiful. There was a leaning towards game when we ate here which is fine by me as I love it. I was not disappointed. The pigeon and duck I had was perfectly cooked. Top marks for the chef and equally fine service from the waiting team.

We had a 2 course meal here as part of our weekend stay. The food was excellent and the choice was very good from beef to duck and lots in between. All cooked exactly as we asked for,with plenty of everything. Service was very good with staff being attentive and invisible at the same time.

The restaurant has a rosette for excellence, and deservedly so. The menu offers an excellent range of choices, including vegetarian dishes that can be adapted for vegans. From the amuse bouche to the dessert the food is excellently prepared and beautifully arranged on the plate. Service is impeccable.

Evening meal was excellent and extremely good value. Breakfast very good and so much to choose from both hot and cold foods

All of the food was excellent but particularly the Lakeland beef that was cooked to perfection and the lemon tart for dessert.

We had a meal at Appleby Manor on Thursday evening, after finding that the restaurant at the place we were staying was closed and finding the Oak Room on Trip Advisor. What can I say - the whole experience from start to finish was amazing. We were made to feel special from the moment we arrived and the service was second to none from every member of staff we came across. The food was equally as impressive - I had goats cheese mousse followed by duck, with the suggested accompanying wines and all were exquisite. My husband ate pigeon followed by the venison and was just as impressed. Even the children's, meals were special with 'proper' cooked chips and what were certainly fresh and home made fish fingers - big chunks of beautiful fish fillet - no frozen orange breadcrumbs here!The desserts and cheese just topped off what was truly one of the best meals I've ever had the pleasure of eating. Now, it's not cheap however you really do get what you pay for and I certainly would not object to paying for this again - in fact we're looking forward to hopefully coming to stay properly in the future. We were unable to get a taxi back to our hotel and they even provided a lift for us - just above and beyond in every way. Thank you for a wonderful evening. I can't recommend highly enough.

I would highly recommend a visit to this super restaurant!We stayed in Appleby for two nights, prior to arriving I had booked a meal for myself and my partner here as a special meal out. The service was out of this world from start to finish - at the end of the evening we were unable to get a taxi back to our hotel in Appleby but the restaurant manager took us home. Where else would do that? The food was beautiful and they catered really well for my gluten free diet. My partner had porks cheek to start and I had salmon - both were equally as good as each other. For main I chose duck - this was cooked to absolute perfection. I also ordered a side of vegetables, these were lovely and crunchy. My partner had steak with a peppercorn sauce, again cooked to absolute perfection. We both chose not to have a dessert and instead sat in the conservatory drinking cocktails! I would love to visit again. Others have mentioned price, we had all of the above as well as two gin and tonics and the bill was £106 so I actually don't think that is overly expensive. If you get chance you really should visit!

We have eaten here on several occasions and the food is always fantastic, so is the service. Nothing is too much trouble and if you need to alter the menu in anyway to suit your dietary needs, they are always will to oblige.

The food here was absolutely amazing and the service as fantastic, we went for a 2 course meal of starter & main and had the cheeseboard to share - the only negative I have is that there wasn't a huge choice of cheeses as stated on the menu but never the less what was on offer was still very good.

We ate here 3 nights in a row as we stayed in the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed every meal. The 4th night we went to the bistro for a change in scene. There were 13 of us in the party and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We were set apart from the main restaurant area, so as not disturb other patrons, but we still felt part of the restaurant. The service was super and friendly and we were able to retire to an adjacent meal for our coffees,

Excellent menu - presented well and cooked to perfectionSeemed a bit bizarre that our red wine was left opened and breathing before we got to it and we were not offered to taste!! 4 star?? I think not in this case!! But everything else excellent!!

The food was very good, the ambience very Christmassy and the staff were lovely, but the service provided was distinctly lacklustre. There were more than enough staff present but unfortunately we still had to ask for the basics, eg water to be topped up, more drinks, empty bottles and Christmas cracker debris to be cleared from the table, etc. Both gents and ladies toilets were untidy with empty toilet rolls lying on the floor. I've been to various events here in the past and have long wanted to dine in the restaurant, hence the 'disappointed' feeling overall.

An extensive wine list with a range of port and sherry. After dining in the bistro the night before I would have preferred to have gone back to the bistro. However without comparing I'd rate this restaurant as good. The menu offered a range of a la cart options. We were seated in the bar and served appetisers then taken through to the restaurant. A little dish of soup was delicious. I had the salmon start, husband had pigeon. Both nice but small portions. We both had partridge for the main. Which was again a small dish. I ordered cheese for dessert which arrived on a trolley like nothing I've seen before. Grand and opulent. The restaurant section we were in appeared very bright rather than subtle cosy lighting. Very enjoyable and lovely staff.

My wife and I have visited this hotel on 3 occasions and never been disappointed with the very excellent quality of food and professional service from all the staff

Had a meal that consisted of courses I had never had before which I like as I am adventurous in my choice of food.

Abbiamo mangiato sempre bene tra pesce, carne e vegetariano. Tutto tradizionale e presentato bene. Il servizio era sempre ottimo. Anche dolci molto buoni. Ci siamo trovati sempre bene. L'unico consiglio era un "piatto del giorno".

The food was excellent in both quality and quantity with a good selection available. The cheeseboard is exceptional.

We were staying Appleby Manor and we ate here on our first night. Our whole experience of the restaurant was professional and top class. Pre dinner canopies served in the conservatory with our Prosecco. Choice was lovely we both had Appleby Manor Oak Smoked Cumberland sausage- Home made local sausage with celeriac and apple remoulade with crisp pastry disc, outstanding, presentation flavours all brilliant. Our mains were Assiette of Cumbrian Beef, braised brisket, cheek and oxtail lollipop, Spring veg and potatoes. I opted for a Savoury Carmelised Onion Bread & Butter Pudding, served with Dauphinoise potato, butternut squash and wild mushroom sauce.Both meals excellent, food is lovely here. 1 dessert of Citrus Cheesecake also scrummy.Service was attentive, all were very young, and very professional. A credit to the hotel, also a cheese cart came around for those wanting cheese as the dessert.Will definitely eat her again

My husband and I ate in the restaurant as part of our stay at Appleby Manor Hotel. The food was delicious. I felt the desserts were particularly good value for money. Highly recommended.

A visit to Appleby Manor as part of a Virgin experience package. Food very well presented and tasted superb. Staff are also excellent. Downside was the rhubarb crumble which for me was lacking in taste and just didn't work. The rest of it was amazing. Highly recommended!!

Four of us had dinner her we all had different starters and mains. The quality was consistently first class. Just wish we lived closer. The cost was not over the top. Will try to engineer another visit.

The food here is 5 star,the staff are warm and friendly,can't wait to go back.They have young people training who are just so polite and very good at what they do.

I am a little unadventurous when I eat out, the menu at the oak room restaurant challenged my tastebuds.Every course was wonderful and mouthwatering. We will be back for more.

We ate here on both nights of our stay and the food was beautiful.The (rare) lamb was to die for and make sure you save room for the local cheese board! Great wine list and the High Cup rhubarb dessert wine is delicious!Highly recommended!

Atmosphere was great, service was excellent and the food was wonderful. We were there for the steak night, lucky as we were not aware of it. Each night has a different special so it is worth looking out for what is on each night. Steak was cooked to my request perfectly. Tender and tasty. It was quite good value for money. Would recommend to anyone!

The Conservatory and Oak Room Restaurants are superb. The staff are very attentive, friendly yet professional. The menu is imaginative and of a very good quality using local produce where available. Prices are very reasonable. They also have an extensive wine list

We stayed at this country house hotel and had three excellent meals in the Oak Room Restaurant. Orders are taken in the bar and the menu had an extensive selection of starters, mains and desserts. There are vegetarian options available. The wine list is quite comprehensive and wines are reasonably priced. Wine is available by the glass and, for each course, a couple of choices are recommended on the menu. Most of the food is sourced locally and on each occasion was served perfectly cooked. Service was prompt, efficient and courteous and each meal was faultless.

This is my 2nd review of this establishment. It has improved from my last. We dined here as part of a overnight package at the end of our holiday in the surrounding area.It didn't disappoint. The food was delicious and cooked to a high standard. The menu focuses on a few dishes for each category starters,mains and sweets with a alternative menu for vegetarians; all well executed and presented.Well done Appleby Manor.

This was a really lovely meal, we dined there for our anniversary the staff and quality of the meal were superb, I had the crab souffle and then the lamb for my main and the lemon tart for desert lovely. make sure if you are staying in the hotel eat here at least once worth it younwill enjoy.

i and my husband have often stayed at Appleby Manor and the highlight of the stay has always been the excellent food served here but not this time . The food had no flavour at all and this was not just 1 night but on both nights we ate there in fact it was so bad we dreaded having having to go there. What has gone wrong I do not know it always use to be such a treat to dine there

The menu is varied and the food was beautifully presented. The pork dish was one of the tastiest I've ever had. Dessert choice was really interesting, we all had different things and they were all excellent. Lemon Tart was especially good. Service was first class, they were obviously training some young members of staff too.

A couple of weeks ago we discovered a lovely walk which takes you past Appleby Manor and so we (my partner, son and dog) decided to sit outside and enjoyed an excellent afternoon tea. The cakes were superb and so today we promised our son and friend we would go there again whilst passing with the dog and have a treat. We were glad to get there and ready for a coffee however after sitting in the cold outside for a few minutes we were asked to leave as apparently dogs are not allowed on the grounds. We were surprised since previously it hadn't been a problem, there are no signs anywhere indicating dogs are not allowed and we were the only people outside with a very relaxed dog! If your policy is not to allow dogs then make it clear and save upsetting customers.

Experience starts with canape and drinks whilst the order is taken ... does not disappoint. Good portion sizes of well prepared, tasty, well presented food with excellent service

Whilst stopping at the hotel my family really enjoyed the eating experience from the really nice touches around canopies ...my daughter thought the tandoori popcorn was great! To the chefs compliments soup. Both adult meals Duck and Steak were excellent along with really tasty and big children's portions. I finished my meal with the cheese board.....a great experience, friendly and very attentive service. Highly recommended!

After many years we returned to see what the Manor was like as we have moved to the area as we used to stay there on a reguler bases some 25 years a go.So we disided to go and see what it was like now well what a disappointment,the staff that were on duty the night that we went where very brusque. Again we were very disappionted with the menu was not much chose and heavy no fish and no fruity starters.When the food did arrive you hat to look twice to see it.We will never be going back to the Manor again it has lost all of the charm and freindly ness also it was over priced for what you get now.

Not the greatest of atmospheres and seemed as if everybody was wispering to go with the total silence. Food was good, but we had to ask for course speed to reduce as we felt we were beig rushed. Overpriced for the quality also.

Our low expectancy Groupon voucher turned into a mouthwatering treat that blew us away. From start to finishes the whole experience was fabulous... I can't even begin to explain the taste and level of service, but it was worth every penny of fee. We even ate there off voucher on our second evening, truley mouthwatering. The lemon tart in all its flamed glory was the show stopper.

We ate in the restaurant whilst staying at the hotel and the meal was exquisite - outstanding menu and wines. Would highly recommend.

We were staying at the hotel for the weekend and decided to check out the hotel restaurant. We were given complimentary canapes whilst sat in the hotel's conservatory while we waited for a table to be free in the dining room. The chef sent two complimentary amouse bouche's to our table which was tomato and basil and very tasty. We decided that we were going straight for main courses after the canapes etc. I had a steak and my husband had the fish dish both came excellently presented and tasted wonderful. I'd asked for my steak to be well cooked and it was melt in the mouth gorgeous. We treated our selves to desserts and I had the deconstruted trifle lovely and my husband had the rice pudding extraordinaire. We didn't want the desserts to ever end very moreish. We are not wine drinkers but we noticed there was an extensive selection on offer. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the staff were very attentive without being constantly in your line of sight. Well worth a trip, hotel is a bit off the beaten track.

Having booked into the hotel and seen the photos of the food on offer, we had very high expectations! This was a very formal meal which complemented the surroundings perfectly. The menu on offer was thoughtfully organised with suggestions of wines to accompany choices. All of the food we ate was beautifully cooked, with the venison being highly recommended. The quality of the meal justified the price, a real treat!

Now a regular visitor to this superb restaurant. The food is always super, lots to choose from and always piping hot. Food arrives quickly and the staff are always polite, attentive and helpful.This venue must surely be the one that other IoW food venues should aspire too.

This is dining of the highest quality. I had the lamb which was cooked exactly as I like it, juicy and tender, My wife had the chicken which she also rated excellent. You will go a long way to better this restaurant.

Breakfast was ready early, evening meal was served late to prevent cutting your day short for touring.

Not a place to eat if you are in a hurry. Service was of the highest professional standard & could not be faulted. After waiting in the lounge while your meal was cooked you are shown to your table. The food was perhaps not generous in portion size but otherwise of the highest quality & presentation equal to any top class restaurant. The only down side would perhaps be the prices. You do get what you pay for but for most folks this would be a place to come for a special occasion.

Evening meal was delicious and well presented. Breakfast was great with a good varied choice and the views are amazing.

The location of Appleby Manor Hotel in which this restaurant is located is wonderful and to be here on some of the warmest day of the year was an extra plus. We dined in the Oak Room Restaurant on saturday night and returned to enjoy the view on various afternoons during our stay in the Appleby area.Quality oozes from the attention to detail and furnishings.We had pre dinner drinks in the conservatory; Light, vibrant and comfortable and then into the conservatory part of the restaurant.The menu is a seasonal ,offering a choice of six dishes per course and is reasonably priced, although portion sizes for starters could be a bit larger ( two scallop starter! -two goujons of monkfish as a main). The rump of lamb main was the best I have ever tasted and the rhubarb dessert was excellent especially the panacotta .Staff are attentive,warn and friendly.Knocks into sticks any other restaurant in the Appleby area.If you are in the area visit. You won't be disappointed any season.I think winter would be lovely for a short break and we will be back.

The previous times I have eaten at Appleby Manor there was a more extensive and varied menu. While the food we had was very good, however it seems that the chef is playing safe now which was a little disappointing.

We were entertained by two dear friends to dinner at the hotel on thursday 10th July. The hotel is very impressive and it's gardens are wonderful. The 50+ flower troughs were super, and the handiwork of the owners parents (We were told).Our host hates complaining and so during our dinner we sat quietly so as not to cause upset. However, at the end of the meal I sought out the head waiter (David) to comment on their "One rosette" menu: The Solway scallops were undercooked, the Shrimp foam was half foam / half watery mess (Which was a totally unnecessary addition). The batter on the monkfish was over fried and horrible and the sirloin steak was chewy and almost inedible. What a shame that such a lovely hotel can kill their reputation by serving such awful food. Even if the chef was off it doesn't excuse this disaster !!

Exceptional Meal in Lovely SettingWe were staying at the Manor Court Hotel and had evening meals both nights of our stay. We were directed to the old conservatory after ordering some pre diner drinks from the bar. These were soon served with some canapés giving us time to review the menu, before being shown to our table. On the first night (Friday) we were seated in the main dining room, the restaurant was quiet around 8pm with only a few other couples dining. I'd describe the menu as honest food exquisitely presented with out being to pretentious. A nice touch is a wine recommendation with each dish. We both had Solway scallops with black pudding a garden pea purée as a starter. I then had Cumberland fell side lamb rump with butternut squash purée leeks & lamb rissoles & jus. My wife had char grilled venison haunch with spinach purée the food was tasty with excellent ingredients service was professional and polite. complements to the Chef, Chris Thompson and the catering team. The second night (Saturday) the restaurant was full and we could only get an early table. Like the night before drinks and canapés in the old conservatory. This time we were seated in the new conservatory and as it was early and still light we had the benefit of the stunning views over Appleby castle and the Lake District beyond. For starter I had Line court smoked mackerel with celeriac and apple infused with horseradish, while my wife had black pepper poached pear with cheese tart & fruit jelly. We followed this with plain sounding fish & hand cut chips but this was an exquisitely executed chefs interpretation of the high street favorite. Monk fish tails in parmesan & herb crum served on mangetout & pea shoot salad My wife had a trio of rear-breed pork, that she heartily recommends. She followed this of with rhubarb & custard another exquisitely executed chefs interpretation of old style school dinner pudding. Would I recommend this restaurant? Without hesitation, it's ideal for a great celebratory meal or intimate treat for two.

First visit tonight I had confit of duck to start this was delicious served with a potatoe rosti and cherries in ameretto I had trio of rare breed pork excellent tender and tasty my husband had calves liver to start then venison, the food was superb and the staff professional but still friendly will go again highly recommend

We had a special offer deal of thirty pounds per head. Whilst this might sound expensive it was three courses of exquisite food plus appetisers and amuse bouche, therefore, an absolute bargain. Starters - delicious, melt in the mouth cheese soufflé and liver that was cooked to perfection. Mains - venison and lamb dishes, both of which were tender and beautifully presented. Desserts - carrot cake and cinnamon ice cream. (To just call this a slice of carrot cake does not do justice to the heaven on a plate flavour, texture or presentation) selection of cheese from the trolley - selection was a bit limited. They boast an extensive cheese menu, but they only had five cheeses available, none of which were particularly unusual nor produced locally (yes, I am a cheese snob). Service was attentive without being obtrusive. We would highly recommend the restaurant, and staying in the hotel just for the restaurant, particularly if you can find a deal online.

The quality and presentation of the food was excellent.The breakfast was freshly cooked.It may have been nice to have had a 'daily special' in the evening but I loved the menu and cannot find any fault at all.
