been a few times before but really disappointed with latest visit. visited on a living social voucher which is no excuse for bad food or service. quiet thursday night so were quickly seated and given menus, starter was a very small portion of thai fish cakes but tasted ok, what happen next was inexcusable, ordered the burger and what arrived was not what i would expect from a restaurant, this was a birdseye/iceland/supermarket type processed meat burger, smelt terrible and tasted awful, i have had the burger on a previous visit and this was not what i got, how hard is it to make a burger ? i think the type you get at a burger van tasted better. dessert was ok, but you can't go wrong with espresso and ice cream

We visited Oak on Monday early evening. We were served by David and on ordering our drinks we were asked to order our food also. As we had glanced at the menu I asked what the pasta of the day was, reply-"chicken arrabiata" , we then asked why there was a rush to take our food order as there was only another table of customers in, David's reply was"to offer the early bird menu" which was cool but his attitude was less than friendly. Our starters came and they were fine then our main course.....on taking a few mouthfuls I realised it was pasta arrabiata not chicken, I called David over and asked him was my dish "Chicken Arrabiata" he said yeah but checked with the chef. On returning he said " oh it was Chicken Arrabiata 3 days ago"!! Considering the service from him had been poor I asked him to take it away and I wasn't paying for it. There was no apology and my partner finished his and we went to pay the bill. We asked if my meal was removed... He grinned and said " Er yeah" I asked to see the bill, he put it on the counter and that's when we said how bad he was and his attitude was stinking! A girl intervened and asked what the problem was, said sorry but then David looked at us and said " Urgh....you's are drunk" and stormed away! Never in my life I have received an insult off a waiter in a restaurant. We had 2 drinks beforehand on Grey St as we were celebrating our Wedding anniversary and had a glass of prosecco with our meal. In this case his general attitude has provoked this review. After complaining directly to Oak via email and no response I feel this had to be shared on tripadvisor. I would just like to say that I have visited Oak many times in the past as its a great restaurant but whilst David is employed there I will not and will advise my friends and family to do likewise. I work for an Airline and would never treat any passenger like this.

My friend and I visited this restaurant early evening with a Living Social voucher. As it was only 6.00pm it was almost empty. We had a very pleasant meal, I particularly liked the fishcake starter. What made the evening more enjoyable was the excellent service we received from the waiter and waitress, both making us feel comfortable and welcome. We went away with a smile on our faces after being called 'girls' and 'lovelies' by the friendly waiter!

Went to Oak last night on a voucher 3 course meal with wine/pimms/sangria offer with a friend. For a voucher restricted menu I thought the choice was good and there was more than one item per course i'd have been interested in having. I had the Terrine for starter, my friend had fish cakes and we were both pleased with the choice. For mains my friend had one of the pies (lamb and rosemary) which apparently come from a business in Rothbury. When I saw it I did wish i'd chosen that but was very pleased with my Sea Bass which was very tasty and well cooked. As the courses were not too large in size (suits us both fine) we both managed a dessert too. I had summer fruit crumble with ice cream and my friend had a selection of ice cream. Crumble v. nice, ice cream too. Dined early (6pm) and restaurant was very quiet. I could recommend it for a meal and will more than likely go back. The 2 waiting staff were very (and genuinely) friendly and made us feel very welcome.

Only found this place as we went to the salsa lessons which are on on a Monday night, however, it seems to be a little hidden gem. The bar itself is lovely the staff were polite and welcoming the prices for our soft drinks were very resonable, the only reason I haven't marked it full score is we never had food. The salsa night was brilliant as well and we'll definately be trying food in here soon

My husband and I visited the restaurant last night after work. Despite some of the reviews on here, the food was delicious - French onion soup to start, then chicken with Diane sauce and my husband tried the 'pie' dish, which he said was lovely and would have again - we finished off with bakewell tart and clotted cream. I couldn't fault the service, Emma the waitress was very attentive and pleasant and we will be going back again very soon.

There is so much to say about this place however due to limited time I give you the edited highlights. The meal didn't get off to a good start when we asked to see the wine list. One waitress gave us the wine list (on the back of a sticky laminated menu card), I chose my wine from the list and a gave my order to a different waitress, I was told by this waitress that they no longer do any of the wines on the list, I asked for the new list but they didn't have one. Supplier problems I assume. We were offered the nearest equivalent Sauvignon Blanc which turned out to be one of the most rank bottles of wine I have had ever had.The restaurant was only half full at 8:30 pm on a Saturday night yet they struggled to find glasses and jugs for the water, so we had to wait for the dishwasher to finish before we could all have glasses.I had the (3) tempura prawns for a starter, these hadn't been drained and the batter was filled with oil, this oil tasking very old and in need of a clean. At £8 this was an expensive plate of oil. The lamb burger had this weird sweet and vinegary taste which was not at all pleasant. Everyone in the party complained of their food being overly greasy or soggy when it should have been crispy.Nobody asked if the food was OK, nobody asked if we needed more drinks. When we managed to grab someone to get us more drinks the waitress only took orders from 2 of the party then disappeared. We had to grab another waitress to complete the order and even then she tried to do the same run off halfway through the order thing. We would have drunk more but only managed to get 2 drinks each during the evening due to the inattentive staff.Throughout the evening we were subjected to very loud music coming through a blown speaker, the shrill distorted sound was painful to the ears, as for the music "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies was a particular low spot. We were asked if we wanted desserts, before getting an answer the waitress handed out 3 scruffy stained pieces of paper with four uninspiring desserts on, 3 menus between 9 guests. She came back less than a minute after handing our the menus and demanded our orders. Whilst most of us hadn't had time to look at the menus we declined and requested the bill. The bill had had a 10% service charge added, we all agreed that we had had terrible service and deducted this from the cash we left to pay for the meal. A man came to take the money and I explained we weren't paying the service charge at which point he became extremely aggressive demanding to know why, we explained the reasons and he just fumed and looked like he wanted to hit us. No apologies were offered he just said very angrily that they were extremely busy, when I pointed out that the restaurant was less than half full he stormed off behind the bar and started making nasty comments about us to other staff, gesticulating and fuming. So it was not a pleasant end to the evening, the whole place has the feeling that it was once a nice place that has been taken over by some amateurs who have no idea how to run a restaurant and are obviously having supplier trouble (lots of dishes were unavailable).

Had a Living Social deal for here and there were 4 of us went to try it out. Not a good start when there was no booking in the diary as we had booked a couple of weeks previously. The place wasn't busy and our starters came quite quickly and they were enjoyed by all. The mains were also good but came on lukewarm plates and as a consequence the food was not hot enough, pity. Desserts were a great disappointment. The coconut and blueberry blondie was clay cold and should have been warm and the Tiramasui was the strangest I've ever had and I work in the food industry. They all seemed like bòught in desserts rather than made on the premises. Overall if these little things had been changed it would have been excellent value for money, as it was it was fine for the money but I would hesitate about returning.

We did not have a Christmas party in December as we knew we were going to be closing for a restoration between May and July. We had looked at a couple of places but as there were 18 of us they were unable to accommodate us at the time we wanted so we thought we would try The Oak. We called in about 10 days in advance and we were greeted by Ross, we told him what we were looking for and he was just as excited by the idea of a Christmas party in June as we were. Ross put together a special menu which included a turkey dinner and Christmas bread and butter pudding. The food was lovely and there were no complaints from any of our 18 strong party. Ross with the help of Michael set up a full on Christmas party for us including Christmas trees, balloons, crackers and a special Christmas cocktail. This place and its staff are amazing and we will definitely be having any further work functions here. Thank you everyone for giving us a very special evening.

I went on a Living Social voucher with a friend for lunch - came with a jug of Pimms which basically had an entire fruit salad in it! She was late so I sat in a comfy sofa for about 30 minutes reading, while the friendly staff offered me a hot drink. The waiter was lovely, so friendly and chatty, and when the pie with black pudding wasn't available, he had the chef make mash with black pudding instead. Food was plentiful, not fancy but tasty and filling. The desserts were a bit overwhelming though, smaller portions would do!

I cannot really believe how bad a meal could be, out with family tonight for a evening meal, myself and brother had fish and chips, the fish was the smallest, thinnest fish I have ever seen in my life. I scraped the fish with my fork and got a spoon full of fish. Sis in law got Thia fish cakes, she said very little fish. My husband got a burger, he hates mayonnaise with a passion, oh know what was slapped all over the burger yes mayonannaise. The waitress was miserable and I cannot blame her for having to serve that food! Worse meal I've ever had, eating shredded wheat for supper soooooo hungry

I love love love Oak. I have been for a big function with buffet food previously which was brill. On this occasion I was treating my sister with a voucher I found on living social (£23 for 3 course meal and a drink for 2 people!).I rang on the day and asked if I could bring forward the reservation by an hour as I had arrived in Newcastle earlier than expected, this wasn't a problem. Upon arrival the waiter was super nice and made the effort to have a bit of a chat as we decided what to have to drink (white, red or rose wine or sangria or pimms!). We didn't feel awkward by having bought the vouchers either which is nice. There was a wide range of starters, mains and puddings to choose from on the set menu. We both opted for potato skins with dips to start, these were gorgeous! I went for a black pudding and steak pie with mash and minted mushed peas for mains, which I couldn't fault. My sister had a mushroom pasta which she said was lovely also. For pudding we had banoffee sticky pudding and chocolate brownie, both also amazing! The food was served really quickly and was piping hot! :)I really really recommend eating here!

Besides the food the service was flawless. We brought in a cake earlier on in the day and they cut it up, lit the candles, carried it to our table and served it up for us. Went for Sunday lunch whilst in Newcastle for the weekend to go to a gig. Found the Oak by chance whilst looking around near the Premier Inn. Was not sure whether to go in at first, and I think this was because it was hard to see inside ans assess the 'look' of the place. (Some people tried to peer through the windows and walked away (can the owners do something to improve this?) However once inside, decor was fantastic and the service from the staff, particularly Damian? was brilliant. Very friendly, vibrant, funny and helpful. We both had the Roast Beef dinner, and I would say it is the best Sunday Roast we have had in any eating establishment (and we have had a few, being in a Ramblers group) Damian even asked us from what part of the joint we would prefer our Beef to be cut from, outer for well dome or inner for 'pink', We went for pink and it was a very succulent piece of Beef, Combined with amazing Yorkshires and Veg cooked perfectly, we loved it.

Went to Newcastle for Sunday dinner already strongly favouring oak as we have been before. Unique setting - there's a bar as well as a deli (which I hadn't noticed last time) but the three areas don't impede each other, rather compliment each other. When our table was ready the waitress didn't make any attempt to help carry our drinks. We also discovered that there was an alternative processco for £20.00 which we were not offered. Starters came quickly. Main course also quite speedy except for the side dish of vegetables which arrived at least 5 minutes later after 2 requests to the waitress. Visited here last Saturday evening, it started out well with our drinks order and food order taken promptly by a very polite waitress. The starter arrived very quick, i went for the pork ribs which were tasty but the meal was not piping hot. After that we waited and waited for our main meal, it took over an hour and the service had went down greatly in our estimations. I ordered the oak burger which when it eventually arrived came with under cooked chips and the burger fell apart due to the bad quality burger bun. This meal was extremely over priced for what it was worth. No one came to check if the food was okay and I had to get the waiters attention to mention the under cooked chips. This was sorted quickly but it continuously proved very difficult to get the waiter and waitresses attention throughout the entire meal. There was no sign of the waitress who was looking after us in the first place and no one came over in her place...No one kept us informed or apologise about the long wait for our mains, or took more drinks orders. I noticed quite a few members of staff seemed more interested in concentrating on making more tables up, hanging around at the bar area and kitchen hot plate area. Throughout the lengthy time i spent here last Saturday evening I could also see looking around that most of the other customers there at the time were also sat waiting for something or other. After the main it took a while for our plates to be cleared away and no one came over to offer desserts or ask if everything was okay with the food. Eventually we got the waiters attention and had intended on getting desserts but decided to leave it and ask for the bill. I did mention to the waiter that we had waited a very very long time for our mains and weren't really very happy at all. He seemed to get very defensive, explaining that on Saturday everywhere you go is busy, all the customers came at once and that you can't get the staff to work weekend evening shifts. I felt this was a very poor excuse as the majority of restaurants in Newcastle seem to get staffing right on a weekend. He was correct though it definitely seemed that there was a lack of staff or a lack of attentive staff and he wasn't very kind in his response to me, he raised his voice sightly and definitely seemed slightly angry and almost made me feel silly for mentioning it.The waiting around for our meal, poor food quality and poor service really ruined our evening and we left the restaurant feeling deflated and in a negative mood.I understand it can be busy on a Saturday, but I have not experienced this poor service in a restaurant in Newcastle's city centre for a very long time and will never return to Oak again and will not be recommending it to anyone i know.

It would seem that the Oak Lounge has received mixed reviews but I can only speak from the experience of having had a perfectly decent meal there. The location of the place is ideal - being in the Quayside area and within walking distance of all of the Quayside attractions as well as the city centre. It was perhaps unusually rather quiet when I visited and the service was perfectly friendly and helpful. I thought some of the dishes on the menu looked expensive for what they were but there was a very good choice including a good number of vegetarian possibilities. The penne arrabiata was extremely tasty with just the right amount of spice. I was driving so no alcohol allowed but the range of cocktails and drinks served looked great.

This was our first visit and we were in a party of about 30 people. I had potato skins as a starter and to be honest they were JUST the skins, not like ones I have had elsewhere in the past. My husband and a friend had the black pudding starter which they both said was lovely but as my husband got 3 pieces of black pudding my friend got half a piece!!!. I did want to say something to the staff but my friend insisted not to bother. The main meal my husband and I had was a chicken burger with chips, as the menu did not have, in my mind a lot to offer. The burger was not a chicken burger as expected but a chicken sandwich in a bun and very lacking of salad garnish i.e. 1 slice of tomato and one leaf of lettuce. The presentation to us was not acceptable, on a breadboard, which to me is so unhygenic. This comment was stated in quite a few of our party. The mayonnaise was just like a lot of slop on the board so I asked for some separate and that was to be honest just like curdled cream. I did not say anything at the time as it was the first time we had been in this company, otherwise I would have asked to see the manager. Apart from all that the delay in serving the food was terrible and the staff apologised and gave us a glass of cheap plonk as an apology. I can assure you that I will not return and would not recommend this place to any of my friends.

We brought brinks from the bar which was very extremley busy, it took about 15 minuites to get served.I mentioned to the "greeter" that it was my Son's 21st and would be grateful if they could make it special for him. We booked the table for 8.00 p.m. and were still standing at the bar at 8.30p.m. The staff appeared to be very fluterested. Maybe this was down to over booking the tables, as we were not the only party standing around waiting for a table. The greeter was very abrupt and not very sympathetic to our long wait. They tried to put us on a table which was definately too small for 4 people. We eventually got seated at 8.40pm.. The food was nice but the service completely spoilt our night. There was no mention of the fact it was my Son's 21st birthday and the night was certainly not made special for him in any way.We will not be returning in the near future as we all felt really disappointed.

As a family party of four we decided to try this place out. We weren't disappointed! Service was fantastic with very friendly and attentive staff. Starters were generous in portion and very tasty. Main course of steak was cooked to perfection. It was absolutely delicious! Our meal was superbly rounded off with the nicest sticky toffee pudding we have ever tasted! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend! Nice atmosphere and vibe, great value and fabulous food and service! We will definitely return!

First time me and my friends have been to this restaurant, and we were amazed by the food and the service. I had mushroom crostini for starters, and steak for main. Both we're very tasty. My friends had the fish and chips and a pasta, which they also liked a lot. The chocolate tart for desserts was to die for! Only downside was that it took a while for us to get seated, even though there were tables available. The drinks we got from the bar was not the best either. Besides that, it was a really good experience, good food, good prices. We will be back!

A great night was had by all 23 of us who poured into the Oak last night for a 60th Birthday celebration. The food and wine were really good for the price and the music and atmosphere was fantastic. I had read an earlier review complaining about the staff and the service but we couldn't fault either. We found the staff to be cheerful and extremely helpful. Special thanks to Michael who looked after us all so well and made our night even more special. We'll be back to see you soon.

My wife and I had meal yesterday, Monday lunchtime. We were the only diners for a while then a couple of other tables became occupied. Service was good, courtesy of the guy from Ireland and the other one,,,(sorry, I don't recall where he comes from). Both very helpful and polite. I had 'double loaded jacket' for starter - half a decent size potato, scooped out and filled with tomatoey mince and two cheeses. Lovely. My wife had potato skins and dips. Good to. Decent portions and tasty, too. Main courses were lasagne - my wife. Hearty portion but not piping hot and had to send it back. No problems. Came back nice and hot, tasty. My deli pie, mash, mushy peas and gravy was great. Good portions, pastry on pie just right and plenty of chunks of meat inside. Really scrumptious. Deserts.... my wife - cheesecake - good portions (that's the cheesecake, too) 'garnished' with strawberry halves, fruit sauce. Lovely texture, great taste. Mine was Eton Mess. Glorious. Good amounts of strawberry, blackberry, cream, meringue and a few drizzles, too. Free refill tea at £1.50 per person can't be bad either! Deal was via Living Social. The venue also does music, lively bar stuff in the evenings, cabaret nights and the occasional Burlesque evening - sounds great. Bar and restaurant area looked smart, clean and inviting. No hesitating to return.

As an extended family we've been going to Oak for a few years now & have always recommended it. We have bought gift vouchers for Family who have all enjoyed the experience.Las year my wife bought a Living Social deal at Oak to be used by February 2015. The table had to be booked by 5th January 2015.We anticipated that the restraint would have a busy festive season & postponed booking until the New Year.We were unable to contact Oak on 5th but made contact on 6th January & spoke to a man whose voice we recognised as the owner/manager. Instead of the usual polite response my wife was met with rudeness & a blunt “Have you read the voucher”. Then a non negotiable refusal to book. After the call wife contacted Living Social who were excellent, acknowledged similar issues with other customers & refunded the value of the voucher.Last year (2014) we paid for several couples to dine there as well as ourselves. We will not spend another penny there. The reason is not so much the refusal to honour the Living Social Voucher but the rude condescending manner in which it was done.I would give 5 stars Living Social who were excellent & who I would I would not hesitate to use again.

I had my sweet 16 here at Oak on the 14/12/14. I honestly couldn't have chosen a better place to have my party. The venue was excellent and in a great location for people to find. The room was decorated specifically to what I wanted (Hollywood Theme) and it looked fantastic. The food was out of this world and I would most definitely go with my friends again. I particularly liked the hot beef sandwiches, they were to die for! and the buffet wasn't just ordinary it had home made pies and a range a meat dishes. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and I absolutely loved Michael, he was fun, entertaining, good to have a laugh with and a very stylish manager that made everyone feel welcome. To be honest I am very surprised that this place is still open and that some people still eat here because it is absolutely atrocious in every aspect. Surely there is very little in the way of repeat custom.I have been here three times in the last year (you may ask why I have returned yet think it is so poor), my 1st visit was out of choice as I too was fooled by how nice the restaurant looked from an aesthetic's point of view, my 2nd visit was for a friends birthday which despite recommending they go elsewhere they chose to give it a try- foolish, and my 3rd visit was a work xmas meal- again certainly not my choice. The food as always was atrocious and the service certainly matched this. Out of the six of us that visited for our Christmas get-together It was a unanimous decision that none of us would ever wish to return or recommend the restaurant to anyone that we knew. The food is terribly cooked, the ingredients are poor quality and the service is atrocious. The customer service from those in charge to those waiting tables is absolutely diabolical. The only positive note is that the restaurant is beautifully decorated, I think the only option for this restaurant is for a complete overhaul of ownership/management. By far the worst restaurant in Newcastle at the moment. Please go elsewhere, I know I and my friends/colleagues certainly will be.

This restaurant looked lovely online, so we were really disappointed by our experience there last weekend. The service was incredibly slow and it took an age to get drinks and starters. I was disappointed with my sea bass - although the fish itself was tasty, it came with just 3 halved cherry tomatoes and two sprigs of watercress. I felt this was really poor value for money. In fact, none of us got the usual things you'd expect with a main course such as chips or vegetables, regardless of what we ordered (the people who ordered steak got onion rings, but that's all). They were so slow bringing out the food that some of us were sitting with our food for a very noticeable amount of time before the rest came out, and some of the orders were wrong. One of our party told a waitress that her food was cold, and there was no apology or offer to put it right, just a 'do you not want it then?'. The waitress then told a man with a white beard who was wearing jeans (no idea who he was) and he came over to the table with an attitude to tell us there was nothing wrong with the food. We said it was cold and he just repeated that there was nothing wrong with it. He was rude and a bit intimidating. We were gobsmacked and didn't stay to finish our meals. We definitely won't be going back - there's lots of great places to eat in Newcastle, so we don't have to tolerate the bad staff attitudes, overpriced food or snail-paced service we experienced at Oak.

Very disappointing went for the Christmas menu for our works Christmas party. I had salmon terrine which was lovely, I then had Seabass but was mortified to the vegetables with it turnip, carrots parsnips and sprouts with FISH I think not, sprouts were like golf balls still hard and the carrot may as well have been raw. Was looking forwards to my dessert of cheesecake what can I say a completely deconstructed cheesecake that was half a tablespoon in size very disappointing. To say I won't be returning will be an understatement. A very expensive meal to find was not very enjoyable or filling at all !

I have just returned from a night out at the oak restaurant. we booked a meal for Christmas night out from work. We waited 1 hour before we got our starters, I chose the vegetable soup, it was watery with raw vegetables in, served with a small piece of bread with no butter, or margarine . I left it , it was totally inedible . The main meal was turkey with more raw veg, and watery gravy, I left it all. The desert was Xmas pudding , it could have been nice if it had not been served with a pile of salad cress on top. What a waist of £24.95 per head. I am not a fussy eater, this is the worst meal that I have ever had . The noise was unbearable , music was to loud, not the place to enjoy a meal out and have a chat.

Myself and a group of friends booked for our Christmas night out. It was a 3 course menu with about 3 choices per course. There were 14 of us booked for 8pm. We were seated just after 8 and our first course arrived at about 9pm! I had ordered vegetable broth which was rock hard vegetables in water with pea shoots on top. Extremely disappointing. The next course was traditional Christmas dinner and it was ok but lacked gravy. The dessert I had ordered was cheesecake but when it came it was in fact deconstructed cheesecake. A few crumbs of digestive biscuit (not even a whole digestive) and a dessert spoonful of soft cheese which I don't think had anything done to it. The service was shocking and as a result we will not be returning.

We went on a Saturday evening what a big mistake awful place and very disappointing. We were firstly asked by several members of staff if we had a voucher we said no. Presume they were referring to a groupon or living and social voucher which was obviously a different menu for vouchers. The menu on the board outside was false none of the dishes were available. The room was like walking into a dungeon dark and dingy. The starter platters were misleading was Greek, Italian or Spanish platter. We asked for Italian which was not as expected. It was nice if you liked the items provided we were told the platters were a mixture from the chef and change we were given salami, cheep wet ham, mini peppers, olives, bread, fish pâte, Wensleydale and Brie price £9:50. The mains were dreadful chicken Diane and chicken pepe. The chicken was over cooked and very dry The sauce for both was the same one with added mushrooms the other with peppercorns it was just like think bisto gravy. Chips and potatoes were hot and nice no veg was available. Cost was £13:50 each The service was average not great. Definitely would not recommend and won't be returning.

We went here for my hubbie's birthday dinner. We were offered a table and given the menu, a smaller copy, since the big copiest hadn't arrived yet, we were told. We asked what the sharing platter was exactly, since that wasn't clear on the menu (price wasn't clear either 'from 7,95'..?) We ordered the Pork and apple burger and the confit chicken leg (still visible on the menu on their website by the way) and we ordered the Italian platter as a starter. When I came back from the toilets, another menu, a big one this time, was put on the table, since the small one wasn't correct: they did not have confit chicken and I was asked to order something else. I went with the braised lamb. After that we ordered two glasses of wine, small glasses. We ended up with medium glasses (after we told the waitress twice. We did not notice untill the bill came). We ordered two reds, one of them a cabernet sauvignon. She came back with a white wine. We told her: it is supposed to be red.... She then told us: we have two kinds.... Er...I'm sorry? She probably meant the Sauvignon blanc. Then the waiting began.... People at the table next to us, who came in much later did get their order, so we asked a waiter what happened to our platter: Oh, yes... sorry, we forgot. The platter came, we wanted to start enjoying our dinner, but before we finished the platter, I actually had my fork in my hand, the waitress came to take it away and she, true story, took my fork out of my hand (!), since the mains were about to arrive. The mains were good, but I wasn't really enjoying myself. They came to ask us if we wanted to see the dessertmenu. Husband answered: which will be for free I presume? No such luck!We just ordered coffee, which also took for ever. We asked for the cheque. The waitress brought it over and asked us if everything was alright this evening.... Well: no! She had the nerve to ask what wasn't okay. We answered her, but there was no follow up. We left disappointed, not a fun birthday exp[erience.

Better than it looks from outside! I had an early dinner here, but there were already a good number of diners, which I felt was a good sign. I started with whitebait which was crisp and flavoursome. I followed this with the Barnsley chop for my main course; this was succulent and made a simple but delicious meal. Service was willing and friendly, and the cost was quite modest for the city centre. Personally I found the music too loud for a restaurant, but I guess that's a matter of individual preference. After buying a Living Social Voucher to try this restaurant we were booked in for last Saturday. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived, this was because the Restaurant gave a few tables away to what looked like "passing trade" from Newcastle United football fans. The restaurant was a sea of Football jerseys which by the way I have no problem with but there is a fine line between accomodating everyone & just plain old greed. It became obvious we weren't the only ones put in this predicament. After purchasing a drink at the bar, yes we had to buy a drink while we waited on our table, the manager asked a group of male football fans for the table back as "the guest" who had booked had arrived. As you can imagine a few drinks had been consumed & the fans weren't happy they had to give up their table. We sat down & requested the Set Menu for the Living Social Deal/Offer. We were made feel like this was an inconvenience. We received a Set Menu which was poor & 2 of the dishes werent available so that made our choice even worse. We were not offered any alternative dish to compensate for their shortage or error with the menu. We decided to just order what we could, eat up & get out. The first course soup, came served to my partner in a bowl with a massive dirty chip on it, again when we raised this we were made feel like this was inconvenience. We ordered our 2 glasses of wine (which came with the dinner voucher) & then watched them being delivered to another table where the guests(football fans) drank thinking it was a freebie on the house. We waited another 15 mins to ask for our wine knowing well what would happen, we were told you had you wine, we replied nope not us, eventually after 5 minutes of realising what had happened we given our wine. We then witnessed a member of staff call a customer a "Numpty". We were made feel like we should rush & free the table up again & this was before we had the desert. The main course was disgusting ! The desert was worse & when we went to leave we weren't even thanked for our visit, no apologies for the terrible service & poor time we had. Its certainly a place if your face fits then your ok as we witnessed staff meet & greet certain people with a more favourable approach. ie if you look like you had money then "come on in". We wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone & have learned a vital lesson on purchasing restaurant vouchers, always ask to see a sample of the menu that is available before buying into their offers or deals. In my opinion I wouldn't be surprised to see this restaurant closed down within 6 months. We met 4 different couples coming in as we were leaving & we told them exactly what to expect inside. Awful, awful place.

This isn't anything like approaching fine dining, but for a bite to eat on a night out in Newcastle it fits the bill absolutely fine. The Black Pudding starter is worth a try, which is served with some potato slices and a Peppercorn sauce. It really was very tasty. There was an interesting take on the Chicken Kiev, with the chicken breast served with a separate jug of garlic sauce - so not really Chicken Kiev. My personal opinion is to use the sauce sparingly, its very synthetic tasting, perhaps made from the sort of garlic you get in a tube. Some of the party commented that their meal was too salty, but by and large our party was quite positive. Service was good, and whilst not particularly cheap, for a City Centre restaurant, it wasn't too expensive. The acid test is "would you go back" and for this type of evening i would. It is certainly far better than some of the rubbish that is served purporting to be food in Newcastle City Centre

We went with friends who had been once before. Had a good table in a booth. For starters two had whitebait, one had mussels, I had scallops all were lovely. For mains, one had rib-eyed steak, cooked perfectly. One had the braised lamb shank, which fell off the bone. My friend and me had a chicken dish. Mine was supposed to have been wrapped in vine leaves and stuffed with feta cheese in mustard sauce. It was lovely but there were no vine leaves. The steak did not not come with chips, they had to be ordered as a side dish, which we thought was unusual. When we ordered a second bottle of wine I had to go and ask for it again.Overall we were pleased with everything, service was a bit slow, but I think that's better than being hurried on a Saturday night. Might try lunch the next time.

Visited at lunch time today with some work friends for a celebration. When we first arrived, the waitress took our drink order - she didn't write any drinks down. She then came back with the wrong drinks, after around ten minutes I think we all received a drink. I then asked the waitress a couple of questions about the specials on menu. Someone ordered the chicken and vegetable soup, only to be told later that the soup was in fact just vegetable. We were told The wrong kind of pies were available, we only found this out as we heard other customers ordering different kinds of pies. We then ordered our food. I had the ribs to start and the Chinese steamed fish for my main. The food was lovely, the portions were very good and everyone on our table enjoyed their food. We then ordered desserts. After 30 ,injures of ordering, we were told that there was no fudge cake available - how does it take 30 minutes after placing order to be told this - we noticed that the waitress had put our order on the bar and had not passed it to the kitchen. We were then told by the manager that he was sorry it was taking so long but they only had two people in the kitchen - the chefs hadn't received the order so how can that be the reason it was taking so long! We were a table of nine and there was about four other tables with 2 people on, this amount of people shouldn't have caused w problem especially when we were being served starters and had ordered mains before anyone else came in. After another ten minutes of waiting for our desserts we had to cancel the order as we had to be back to work - at this point we were 30 minutes late for work after waiting 40 minutes for a piece of brownie with some ice cream. The manger put our brownie and waffles in foil obviously we didn't get ice cream. He slightly reduced the bill to allow for not having ice cream, although after waiting so long you would think he would have removed it completely! When we receivd the bill there was a service charge added. We asked the waitress who told us that every table over 8 people gets a service charge added. We then asked where does it say this on a menu as we had not been aware of this at the start - and after the shocking service we were not prepared to pay a £20 service charge after spending a lot on the food. She came back after speaking to the manager and just said in every restuarant to in newcastle, tables over 9 people were charged for service. The manager then came over and when we told him what the waitress said he just said I don't think that that is what she would of said. He was very rude and was arguing back which was not very professional at all. After eating my starter and main, I would definitely have came back to the Oak, but the rude staff have literally put me off visiting again, as well as the rest of our party. It's such a shame that front of house staff are setting a bad scene for lovely food and especially blaming the chefs for delay when they hadn't even received the order!

Went at lunchtime (9 of us) through the week. We were the only ones in at that point. Waitress took drinks order without writing them down. She got a couple of them wrong and then had to be reminded of others. Good start. It was then a good while before she came back to take our food order. When the food did arrive, it was lovely, no complaints about that, but oh, the service! We ordered desserts which after 30 mins still hadn't turned up. The excuse? There were only 2 chefs on. We'd actually seen the waitress talking to the chef and either she hadn't put the order in the right place or the chef hadn't seen it. Hmmm! STILL the desserts weren't ready a while after that. We had to cancel some and take others back to work in a paper bag!! Service charge was added which we queried as it wasn't shown on the menu that this would be added. The waitress wasn't very helpful when we asked about this and the manager actually argued back with us! What happened to the customer is always right?! We refused to pay the charge anyway as the service was non existent. So all in all, great food but god knows how they cope when the restaurant is full!!!

Called in for a late Sunday lunch & it was a huge mistake, staff are not very friendly or welcoming but we got a table for two as the place was more or less empty. After looking at the menu we ordered two lamb roasts & a pint & a half of lager, after a ten minute wait our food arrived, the first thing i noticed was the how tiny the portions were for what we had paid which was £8.95 per meal.As we started our meal it was easy to tell that it had been micra-waved as it was scorching hot & very dry.The plate consisted of a nearly burnt Yorkshire pudding.a bearly cooked piece of collyflower, two baby carrots, two baby green beans the size of matchsticks & two roast potatoes about the size of a icecube! The most important item which is the meat was hardly visible, there wern't any slices of lamb which you would expect for the price but about three fatty strands on each plate,it was as if they had run out of meat & used the scraps. The food itself was no better than you would get at a cheap cafe & for the prices they charge we left feeling really ripped-off at what we paid & what we got, just under £25 was the bill & we would never return here again.
