I can't exactly say anything good or bad about the food as we didn't get to eat there, even thought I booked on their on-line booking system for a table of 3 for my mother in laws Birthday meal, we arrived at 14.30 table was booked for 15.00, there was about 7 customers no one at the bar and it still took about 5 mins for someone to come to see us, eventually a lady came and asked us what we would like to drink I told her we have booked a table for 3 people we was told they have stopped serving food for the day even though they still had the board outside saying what food they was serving, so I showed the lady my booking confirmation on my phone her response was there's nothing in her diary ( obviously they'd forgot to put in in ) can't believe they had stopped serving food at 2.30 in the afternoon. No wonder the place was virtually empty if they treat the paying the way we was treated 😡

We had booked for breakfast as was meeting up with our dad Totally made to feel unwelcome Coffee machine was plugged in but she said we only do instant coffee!! The lady walked past saying 3 cooked breakfast We hadn’t even been told what the menu was So we got up and left and I told her we don’t feel you even want us here She just replied oh I have worked in retail customer facing as a manager for 30 years plus and this is worst I have seen in service

Previous to booking we saw ion the website that fish and chips were available at lunchtime . On arriving at the pub we were directed to our table which had a lunch menu on. It was mainly sandwiches , jacket potatoes and a ploughman’s. We were confused and asked if we could have fish & chips . The lady behind the bar asked the lady in the kitchen and all we heard was a lot of moaning …. She then came out of the kitchen clearly not very happy pushing the doors open in a mood , which made us feel extremely uncomfortable . The food was not amazing and having been made to feel most unwelcome we certainly won’t be returning. Given the pub was more or less empty you would think they would be grateful for some custom .

I am so pleased that Tracey and her lovely team have taken on the running of our village pub. The pub has fast become a beacon for the community and the team have put so much thought and effort into making the pub feel welcoming. Tracey & Co never forget the little things that make such a difference, like lighting the fires when it’s cold and implementing changes having listened to their clientele. Heading into Christmas we have some really quirky and fun events to look forward to, not forgetting to mention that huge efforts have been made to transform the pub into an enchanting, festive spot that both children and grown-ups alike have delighted in. Our lovely village really needs this super pub and I am full of praise for the efforts being made to create such a warm and welcoming environment to enjoy good company, a few drinks and a hearty meal. Cheers to the ‘Oak & Black Dog’. X

Called in for a cup of coffee on Sunday morning. Their coffee machine only did two types Latte and Capuchinno which was not what I was really wanting (ie Americano/Flat white) but elected for one of them. Was very luke warm and tasteless and cost £3.95, what a rip off. Luckily, I have since discovered, the shop next door has a coffee machine.

Experience of first night looks like the new owners might actually listen to the customers! Give us a smile and genuine welcome, good ales and not grub from a packet and it will become great again after years in the doldrums. Let us hope the nasty cheap booze, pool table and all that went with it are things of the past. Good luck Tracey and Ian

Had lunch here recently, Saturday was not very busy, would recommend booking as It is small, it appears to cater for about 30 people. There is a small room upstairs which caters for families of 10-12 people, looks very private. The meals are of good quality, very traditional food, just what is required, not too much choice which i find can be off putting. The car park is very small only 4 cars, you have to park in the street, not too much of a problem.

We drink sensibly and have never caused trouble . We were very pleasantly surprised by our visit to the Oak and Black Dog during a weekend stay in the area. The landlady was very friendly and made us feel at home in a pub that retains a lovely local feel. There were 3 ales on tap, one of them (Otter) I hadn't tried before. The food was fantastic - we ordered the ribs and the hand-battered haloumi. The BBQ ribs fell off the bone, and were extremely tasty - definitely worth ordering again. There is a dedicated section of the menu for vegetarians, and they also had a great selection of specials on the day. If I had one suggestion, it would be that they put up a board with the specials on. Otherwise, a great meal in a lovely pub frequented by locals.

we have visited many times and have never had any complaints. i wonder if they have had a change of chef? this was a family meal and my Mum chose the salmon which was cold when served and should have been hot. When we complained about this, although the salmon was already over cooked, it was obviously zapped in the microwave! this resulted in a rubbery salmon. it was disconcerting that between cooking the chef came and sat in the restaurant, in his chef's clothing, and concentrated on his mobile phone. we have been dining here since the new owners took over, but we won't be back. What a shame, it was going so well for them.on a good note, the service was impeccable, as always. front of service staff should be commended for their hard work and attentive service.

There are two pubs in the village but currently only the Oak and Black Dog serves Saturday lunches. We wanted to eat locally to celebrate a combined birthday and retirement with our family and booked for six in the little upstairs room. When we arrived we were politely greeted by the bar staff and shown to our table, which was set. The staff do work hard and after serving us with drinks (of which there is a reasonable choice) provided the NEW menu. At the time, I would estimate ten other people were in for lunch and about another ten having a lunchtime drink, so not exactly heaving with customers. Beware, the new menu has NO vegetarian options at all. Come on, this is 2015 guys! Oddly, the previous menu did have a few. However, after some discussion, a simple pasta and tomato sauce dish with side salad was offered. A risotto was also offered, so why not on the menu? Four of us had starters which took 30 minutes to arrive but quite tasty devilled whitebait and Cajun calamari. For mains, three had pork belly on mash, one chicken burger, one peppered chicken and the pasta. From arriving to being served our mains took 1 hour 30 minutes which we considered unsatisfactory. When the mains eventually arrived, no vegetables were served, only a small salad garnish. Maybe they must be ordered separately but there's nothing on the menu to indicate this. The pork belly and sauce was tasty but 2 slices on mash without veg is a bit pricey at £10.95. Apparently the burger and pasta were (just) OK. The peppered chicken was tough and without the sauce almost inedible and this was not ordered by a fussy eater. We decided to forego the dessert.Overall, the pub decor is tired and needs refreshing and the view from the upstairs window into "garden" was of empty kegs and the smokers' shelter, which need tidying. The garden could be a real attraction and there were some hanging baskets (in need of TLC) but instead had an old van parked up (which looks unroadworthy and abandoned), likewise an old wheel and tyre, two wooden crates (or maybe old bookcases) just dumped, broken umbrellas, cigarette ends and other detritus and litter. Altogether, from an environmental health perspective, a potential haven for vermin, although didn't actually see any. It is certainly not somewhere I would allow my granddaughter to play. So really very disappointing and we shall not be returning any time soon.

Booked a table in this pub whilst holidaying in the village and was told you had to book as it was so busy. It wasn't. It does have some character and was popular with the locals though. The menu is OK but limited on Sunday and is somewhat overpriced. The wine selection was very poor with Merlot being the only red, so we had to settle for a Rose Zinfadel. Second time here, but I didn't write a review last time, which is a shame as the first visit was better than this one.I had the lambs liver, mash and bacon and the wife had the peppered chicken. Mine was ok and the wife's chicken was....ok. Certainly nothing to complain about, just not anything to rave about. We were served promptly and the waiter/barman was polite and friendly. The Chardonnay was, according to the missus, very dry but I had a pint of Shakespeare something-or-other and it tasted nice. I suppose it really rates a 3.5, rather than a 3, but unfortunately I can't do that here. We will come back again at some point, mostly because of the nice meal we had the first time around. The pub has a nice olde-world charm to it too.I would certainly recommend this pub over the other one in Stretton, the Shoulder of Mutton, where the owner quite shamefully leaves completely inappropriate replies to anyone who would DARE criticise his pub! Better ales at the Oak too.

Today I visited The Oak & Black Dog in the beautiful village of Stretton on Dunsmore with my husband and 2 year old toddler. Our first visit. A warm happy welcome and seated straight away, this pub has bags of period character and charm. Its quaint and a lovely location. We had the chicken liver pate and brie wedges to start which were both v fresh and tasty. Good in portion size too. We had the roast beef for mains. You get the clear impression from these roasts that the chef really cares about taste and loves to cook. The beef was the best I've had in a very long time and I eat out most Sundays. Deliciously tender and well seasoned, it was accompanied by a huge array of fresh vegetables including parsnips, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli and red cabbage. Absolutely yummy. My two year old daughter had sausage with mash and peas and gravy. The sausages were very good quality. Not deep fried and proper meat. Not like some places who cater for children. Needless to say she enjoyed it all! The pub has a good range of beers including Guinness and IPA. They have special pricing for Sunday's and all in all a good bill - just over £35 for two starters, two mains, my daughters main and two beers. I'd like to say a big thank you for such a warm welcome and brilliant tasty food. We will be returning. See my blog on best Sunday lunches out here: http://oursundaybest.blog.co.uk/

Turn off at the mini roundabout and see the Oak and Black Dog on your left. Mind the step on entering before being welcomed by Dan and /or Amy. A real country pub with a nice feel and service to match.Cask ales, beers, wines and spirits to tempt you and a food menu to go with it. Cuisine is British and of good standard with decent portions. Sunday lunch has roasts,(the lamb is great!!) as well as a full other choice. They will even do a take away sandwich which would be hard to beat anywhere. Friendly, cosy and happy atmosphere and well supported by locals. This was our third visit and it gets better every time.

Whilst in store after ordering 2 iced coffee’s we were handed our drinks without lids. My partner very politely asked if we could have lids for our drinks and the member of staff very rudely replied ‘if we had lids I would’ve put one on’. Being an assistant manager in retail I would be appalled if I heard any of my staff speaking to a customer like this.

My partner and I have started popping in recently since the new landlord has taken over. Having read the recent comments I wouldnt take any notice of them, I have been local to the area for years and sadly it’s just one of those areas where certain people do not like change. There is always a good atmosphere, beer is good, we tried the steak night last night (Thursday) and we’re really impressed! Locally sourced Aberdeen Angus steak, beautifully cooked, plenty on the plate and very reasonable! £27.95 for 2 steaks (sirloin) and a bottle of vino, extremely good value and no scrimping on quality. Keep up the good work 👍

Service was slow, considering it was only Friday when I visited. I also overheard two other customers enquire why their orders were taking so long. Isn't it strange how three completely separate parties thought the service was a little sluggish? Food was OK.

My friends and I went tonight and we watched the man blow his nose and then touch our straws when making the milkshakes, another man emptied the bins and continued to make puddings without washing his hands, they used water only to clean their utensils. Didn’t help that it took ages for them to make! Utterly disgusting! Put us off our milkshakes so we ended up leaving them!!! Never go here unless you want to catch an illness !

Usually a top place to eat. Cafe staff are exceptional as are most the staff there, with the exception of Mr Vest the store manager. But on this occasion there was a bird flying around the store. I didn't realise until id finished my coffee and cake. They were still selling food and beverage to be consumed on site with a bird in store.
