Number One Delicatessen & Cafe in St Edmundsbury

This cafe produces the best hot cross buns ever, coffee good and staff very nice. This is a lovely town full of old world charm

Visited here yesterday as had an appointment in Clare cancelled, so thought I’d do some paperwork and calls in a local cafe and spend my money on coffee’s with them instead of a national chain. I wish I hadn’t and glad that I was asked to leave before I bought lunch and spent anymore money when clearly I wasn’t welcome inside the owners cafe. I sat on the smallest table away from everyone in the corner so that I only took up a table for two and was not disturbing anyone whilst doing my work. The owner came over and told me that apparently the couple on the table near to me had complained that I was making phone calls whilst they was having coffee. Since when can’t you talk in a coffee shop? But more annoyingly it wasn’t true anyway as I had seen them leave and they hadn’t said a word. I also saw the owner already come out from the kitchen area once asking the lady who had served me (who was very nice) what I was doing there and clearly he was unhappy about it for some reason. After owning my own coffee franchise for the last 5 years I felt I needed to write this review as I would never of made any of my customers feel so uncomfortable and unwelcome in my coffee shop, I guess the difference is I appreciated every customer that came in and not just people who came in spent the most and left the quickest. It’s a shame the owner was to much of a coward to be honest and say he had a problem with me working whilst in there instead of making up lies. I wouldn’t recommend anyone going to this coffee shop if you have any calls or work to do as clearly you aren’t allowed. To top it off the cafe was freezing the atmosphere was very quiet and not the typical warm welcoming, buzzing environment you would expect from a coffee shop. Maybe if it was busier and friendlier the owner wouldn’t hear every conversation and be worried about customers working in his store and be busy making food instead. Left with a very bitter taste this is not how customers should feel after visiting. No wonder they are rated the lowest in Clare.

Decided to pop in here for a quick lunch, don't really know the area. The menu was good and the staff very friendly and welcoming. I wondered if they would add mushrooms to my scrambled egg on toast, asked and it was no issue. Both my friend and I really enjoyed the freshly cooked food, served with a smile. Would happily recommend and return

Very nice food and the staff are friendly and efficient. My only concern is the shop is very hemmed in and could do with more space or less clutter.

Stopped here for lunch. A delight. Gorgeous wee deli with interesting products and a very extensive menu. Soup delicious and my game pie ploughman’s was excellent. Everything beautifully prepared and staff were thoughtful and helpful. Good array of cold drinks for a warm day but sadly we had no room for sponge pudding. Fascinating to read about the carved head, very intriguing.

We were disappointed that no food was available at 15.30 on a Wednesday afternoon. Also disappointed that on asking if there were anywhere else to eat in clare at that time. We were told there was not. When in fact there was the very good Cafe Clare only a couple of hundred yards away. In the end we decided that we were pleased to be turned away as the Cafe Clare was extremely good

One Saturday several weeks ago, my friend and I went to the Number One Deli in Clare, it was 4pm, I believe they close at 5.30 pm. After waiting to be seated for around ten minutes, we were then informed that there was no cooking after 4pm ( since when was making a sandwich in a sandwich bar, cooking ? ) only cakes available after 4pm .......really ? Anyway, after only ordering tea after all that.......we were asked to move tables. As a retailer myself in today’s climate I find it extraordinary to shut down your menu 1 1/2 hours before closing on a SATURDAY ! Anyway, needless to say, first and last visit

A busy little cafe - friendly service. Breakfast was speedy and delicious. A bit on the pricey side, but we had an enjoyable visit. We would return.

Having read the reviews I was expecting good food but a wait. Food was actually delivered quickly and was delicious. Service was friendly and the cafe has a nice feel to it. Drinks were good and filter coffee for £2 with a free refill is great value. Only minor criticism was the lack of Wi-fi but that’s a small issue in a cafe of this size.

Clare must be one of the most unspoilt small towns in the country. One of the jewels is this delightful restaurant, which is full of charm. A good range of dishes is on offer, all are reasonably priced. The only disadvantage was the rather long wait after placing our order. Our food when it arrived was very enjoyable.

Food arrived 50 mins after placing order, mushrooms were in wafer thin slices and dried up completely, and about a teaspoon full. Fried eggs not fully cooked in spite of asking, side order never arrived, whole thing was lukewarm apart from the toast which was cold, hard and burnt. Won’t be returning.

A lovely place for a great tasting cup of coffee and my favourite cafe in Clare. My daughters enjoy the hot toasted tea cakes and jam and local apple juice. A warm welcome always awaits too!

Visit to Clare started with lovely breakfast here. Had delicious sausage sandwich. Friendly staff and great service couldn't do enough for you

Having travelled down for a wedding on a friday, we struggled to find somewhere to eat until we found this lovely cafe.

We popped into this café for an early lunch and was glad that we did as it became busier by the minute with some customers being turned away due to lack of room! The waitress was very helpful & patient especially when I couldn't decide what to choose. The menu here is varied with a choice of breakfasts, light lunches and more ample meals available. There are also meals on a 'specials board'. We enjoyed our meals (both courses) and would definitely return if we visit the area again. The café is in a prime spot close to other amenities, the car park; antiques centre and the river.

Just called in for coffee while walking between Cavendish & Clare.Very pleasant staff & a lovely piece of cake--lemon & blueberry.Menu looked very reasonable for lunch

Only had a pot of tea here but the service was very fast and friendly, the menu varied and the cakes looked delicious :) Prices were very reasonable too.

Visitamos este café ayer con mi hijo años que tiene alergia a los productos lácteos y la soja. Comer fuera no es fácil y siempre tenemos que llevar un paquete de comida para él. Este café y su personal era muy amable, relajado y listo para ayudar de cualquier manera posible. A pesar de ser pequeño nos recibieron con sillita y equipaje, estábamos contentos de calor algunos de nuestra comida para nosotros, y nos proporcione con cubiertos etc. peques El menú y la lista de ofertas es extensa (sin duda más grande que se dan a menudo en un pequeño restaurante) y la comida que pedimos estaba delicioso con generosas porciones. Sin duda volveremos de nuevo cuando esté en Suffolk!

Me encanta este café de haber visitado muchas veces, con la familia, amigos o en mi propia casa. Que siempre está lleno, pero cuánto es rápido. Habiendo dicho eso, no tienes prisa y puedes sentarte y charlar con la compañía o como lo hice hoy, leer y relajarse. La comida es muy buena. Precio razonable. Tuve feta y espinacas con ensalada y patatas pasty, y estaba delicioso! Tenía una taza de té. Si tienes café de filtro, tienes recambios. El personal es muy amable y atento. Están abriendo otra cafetería en la antigua estación de Clare Castle Country Park.

Great service by Richard and his team. Fresh crusty breads, great coffee, lots of choices for lunch. Good range of local produce, and Richard cooks a great full English breakfast!

Good food which is cooked to order. Cakes, sandwiches light lunches and lovely coffee. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Esta es una pequeña y bonita cafetería a bajar en, la comida es buena y amplia variedad a bordo. Es una pena que el café en una taza sin al platillo o servilleta por la cuchara, higiene en cuanto a que no me gusta mi cuchara en mesas de madera comunes.

Es el desayuno es el segundo mejor en Clare, que las pequeñas bien presentado-raciones a un precio.

Un buen café es una pena que se tarda mucho tiempo para hacer Baggett's, podría ser porque estaba tratando de encontrar lo suficientemente pollo para ir en, ellos no tuvieron éxito, lo cual fue una pena porque las Baggett, habría estado bien. Lo mismo se puede decir sobre el sandwich de jamón.

Often eat here and it is always a very pleasant experience with good food and snacks. Service can be a bit slow is our only criticism, but the atmosphere makes up for that. Also offer cheeses, bread etc for sale. Bread is particularly good.
