A lovely little cafe tucked up an alley in Cockermouth. The food was good and the staff very friendly. It’s worth taking your time to find this little gem.

They are disability friendly as well as being friendly. I took in Saskia my disabled daughter and they were brilliant with her they understood that she needed food cut up small because of choking episodes and gave us a small dish of mayo so that Saskia could dip her cut up tuna mayonnaise sandwich in it. They also adapted food to make sure it was dairy free for me. A wonderful afternoon made wonderful by the staff. Thank you x

This was a delightful spot and found by chance. It is just off the High Street but really a jewel. We only had coffee and wonderful toasted cheese scones but the menu had so much on offer that we will go back for breakfast or afternoon tea. Clearly child friendly and so welcoming.

On our first (but not last) trip to lovely Cockermouth, visiting Wordswoths House & were looking for a place for lunch. Saw two ladies disappear up a little gap on the other side of the street with a cafe notice and decided to follow. Lovely friendly place. Had delicious homemade chunky vegetable soups and sandwiches. Good choice of options and they also help raise money for the RNLI. Will happily return.

Lovely lunch today at this hidden little gem of a cafe up a lane off the Main Street. Would have walked right past without knowing it was there but found it on trip advisor in advance. Lovely outside terrace to sit and have a great all day breakfast for the grand price of £10.50 including tea and toast. What a bargain these days. Service was prompt and friendly. Will definitely go back and try the lovely array of cakes on offer.

We had the most delicious breakfasts here yesterday. Top quality food, large portions and served by friendly staff. The cakes looked so delicious that we returned in the afternoon for the most delicious lemon & honeycomb scones. The were absolutely lovely and we were pleased to meet the chef and compliment him on his beautiful scones. We even took two toffee scones with us on our travels to Scotland. Thank you for the great service and delicious treats. Will definitely return as soon as possible!

We found this little gem of a cafe by chance when walking past the 'alleyway' entrance to it. All other cafes were really busy but I suspect that because the entrance to Norham Cafe is kind of hidden, not many new visitors to Cockermouth know of it. There was no mention on the menu about any food allergy/intolerance options, but when I asked if gluten free is catered for, I was told of a whole host of GF items available. Food and drinks were first class - all seemed to be home made, including the veg soup with a cheese and herb scone, which was delicious 😋 my husband's GF tuna toastie was also delicious - he also came away with a takeaway slice of lemon drizzle cake. More advertising, both outside on the street board and on the menu, of the GF and vegetarian options available needs to be done, as this lovely little cafe (with a 5* hygiene rating) would then attract more such clientele. Staff were very friendly too. All in all, a fab place.

Norham House is situated in an alleyway off Cockermouth Main St and is based in a converted Victorian house, with most of the period features retained like the cooking range. Also in warm weather you can sit outside in the courtyard to eat, which I did. Norham House is a very reasonable place to eat. Just over £ 10 for a mug of coffee and a meal is decent value and my chicken burger and chips was good value with the burger a decent size and the chips fat and free of grease. As well, the cafe does a decent range of cakes and sandwiches and has specials. Please visit Norham House if you want a decent meal at a low price or fancy a cake and a drink.

If you are looking for hot, hearty and tasty fare at a good price in nice clean surroundings, then the Norham Coffee House ticks all the right boxes. A terrific little cafe tucked away down a little alley off the main street in Cockermouth, this hidden gem is worth seeking out when you can. This is a lovely little venue that evokes the best of cafe traditions, from hearty specials, of two course roast dinners with big puddings, to great British staples like the full English and Pie of the day, all in a warm, homely environment that makes you feel welcome throughout your visit. With the food, the small details are important, and every time I have visited here, the plates have been heated, ensuring good hot food that can sustain you through the hardiest of shopping expeditions. This isn't the place for a romantic meal for two, but it is exactly the right spot for a great breakfast, brunch, or lunch experience, before hitting the rest of what Cockermouth has to offer. With home made buns and cakes available to take away too, it is a treat that keeps on giving.

On a rather chilly Lakeland day, we stopped off at Cockermouth on a memory lane trip and after visiting my daughter-in-law’s childhood haunts, we were feeling pretty hungry. We came across Norham House down a little alleyway and were immediately taken with the old fashioned tea room decor. With something to suit three generations on the menu, we were soon tucking into a hearty well cooked meal. Service was prompt and friendly and we felt at home in this family run business. Well - previously the tiled area of this cafe was “dog friendly”. We were regular visitors to Norham House, with it without a dog! We arrived with 6 friends (8 in total) and asked if dogs were still allowed in that area. The cafe was EMPTY and we were told “No”. I doubt they realised they just turned 8 customers away - but we won’t be back. You know in an area like Cockermouth many people are holidaying with their dogs! We live here and there are dog friendly establishments who are clearly busy due to this fact!! Rude, dismissive and clearly don’t want business. Even a polite refusal would have meant we would have taken the dog home and retired without her. Your loss I’m afraid.

I ordered a seafood platter, with chips and salad. What arrived was not what I was expecting. It was a very cheap impression of scampi. I couldn't eat the fatty coating so took it off to eat the contents, which consisted of a prawn, an impression of a scallop, and some very nasty looking fish. I ate 2 chips and couldn't eat any more. Grossly overpriced at £7.95. I had to call at Sainsburys for something to eat.My hubby had pudding and chips. He left the outer of the pudding because it was so thick, and he never leaves food. Disgusting don't waste your time going here. They never even asked if there was a problem when they collected my plate, with hardly anything eaten.

Tucked away down a side alley off the main street is a gem of a café, with some great fayre! On a sunny day customers can take advantage of the outdoor courtyard or receive equally good service at any one of a good number of tables inside. The café’s name belies its true purpose as a good, all-round (maybe, dated – not a scone ingredient, alas) source of light food, served with tea or coffee; with a good selection of snacks and lunchtime specials. I believe the café is owned by a man-and-wife duo and as she dutifully fulfils the role of supervising friendly staff the main man and baker extraordinaire – King Dave – crafts some fantastic scone concoctions: Apple, lemon & cranberry, orange & cranberry, hazelnut & orange, date & apricot, raison/sultana fruit, to name a few. May I suggest you to put him to the test with suggestions of other ingredients – I bet he will rise to the challenge!

Nice outside seating area. Simple food. Good service. Pleasant change from some of the pricier venues in town.

We had a really enjoyable brew stop here after arriving in Cockermouth on our way home from the north Cumbrian coast to Lancashire but finding it more of a ghost town on a Sunday than we ever thought possible in a tourist area in this day and age. Pay and display parking is still chargeable and the National Trust's Wordsworth birthplace is open but the independent shops everyone seems to rave about, many sporting stickers urging people to visit Cockermouth, were practically all closed. So we moved on elsewhere to spend our leisure time money. But before we did, we needed refreshment. While many potential coffee stops were also closed, we found Norham House in a delightful setting up a passage way off Main Street, set into a courtyard and offering a wide-ranging menu at very reasonable prices, with friendly efficient service. Recommended - and we might well eat there if we are ever in town again.

We went to Cockermouth for the food fair and were very disappointed in that; so we decided to have an early, light lunch in this lovely little coffee shop. We had bacon rolls that were excellent. They were freshly cooked, quickly served and filled with tasty bacon. The tea came in a china pot decorated with flowers and the cups were china with the same design. The café was clean and comfortable and there were lots of home made cakes on display that looked excellent. Certificates displayed on the walls from the local agricultural show indicate that the cakes would taste good too. Service was excellent and the staff were friendly and efficient.

Really looking forward to our visit for a late breakfast after a period of a few months shut down for this café.Unfortunately on asking if mushrooms are available with a breakfast was advised that they were not!The point was that the person advising of such couldn't be bothered to either a) apologise and offer an alternative or b) go and get some from the supermarket 'round he corner!I presume it has new ownership but, clearly, a lot needs to be learned about customer service.Needless to say we didn't stay and graced another establishment in town with our business.

Didnt like cockermouths - road works, up the main steet. THE TOWN HAS GONE THRU ENOUGH WITH THE FLOODS, - never mind new off puttting road works after. The lovely town needs help / not hindrance.

It was a hot sultry day and we had had a very large cooked breakfast in our guest house and so were not anxious to have lunch too early. In any case, as we walked past this place at lunch time, we could see queues. After visiting Wordsworth's House and being disappointed that their tearoom only served cakes and scones, we asked where we could have something more savoury. We were told about Norham House and other places. We chose this one and were so glad we did. The small entrance is deceptive as there is not only a courtyard but an L- shaped room as well. We asked for sandwiches and a pot of tea. The tea was good and strong and the sandwiches were not only well filled, but were also accompanied by a small salad, enhanced by a slice of orange and kiwi which added flavour. We were also pleased to be able to help ourselves from the large glass urn at the back of the room of cool water - much needed in the heat. The staff were friendly and efficient and it was obvious that they had had a busy day but still maintained prompt service. We were then tempted by their strawberry meringue. When it arrived, it was not only a meringue with strawberries but also had a dollop of ice-cream as well and was delicious! We felt relaxed and comfortable and there was no hurry by the staff for us to leave. Others came in after us who also appeared to enjoy what they ordered. Sadly, we live a long way from Cumbria, otherwise we would visit more often!

The best dog friendly cafe in the lakes. Gorgeous food and the warmest welcome. This is our go to place when walking in the north lakes. All of the food always hits the spot but the cakes are just gorgeous!

Thought we would give this place a try as we saw it when coming back from Lodore Falls a few weeks ago and thought location was good. Booked Sunday lunch for 2 adults and 2 teenagers as a pre-Christmas family lunch out. On arrival no one greeted us and we waited in line at the bar to be told, not shown to, which one our table was and to come back to the bar to order. This is fine but at hotel restaurant I would expect staff to come and take our order - main course Sunday lunch £24.95, burgers the kids had £21.95 so not cheap. Inn on the Lake Glenridding for example is less expensive and far superior in location, class, service and food quality. I ordered roast beef and when it arrived I actually got lamb - no problem mistakes happen - but it did mean i had to wait for it to be replaced whilst the rest of my family ate their meals. When beef arrived it was dried out, as if heated under a grill. No one checked on us during the meal but asked if everything was ok when they came to clear. I told them my beef wasn't great - half of it uneaten - and they said i should have told them and they would have replaced. Fine, but bearing in mind i had already waited for it to be replaced once and eaten after others had finished i didn't really want to go for round 3. My meal was removed from the bill but the experience for a family lunch out was spoilt. We were in the restaurant area that doesn't allow dogs but close to the open doors to the dog friendly area - I love dogs but the smell coming through wasn't pleasant from time to time, especially when eating. Generally i think it is expensive and disappointing for what it is, pub type service and food at restaurant prices. £9.50 for puddings for example is excessive for the environment. A shame as location is great to stop for lunch if walking around Derwentwater but I wouldn't recommend based on pour experience today. As a final comment the staff did seem genuinely apologetic.

I visited Oilys with family and just after the meals were served my brother had taken ill. One member of staff in particular was so helpful and attentive. Part way through the meal we had to leave to take my brother home and the same lady offered to box up all our meals for us as we had only started. Excellent service. The meals were delicious and it is just a shame we had to leave early. Luckily my brother is okay and we will have to go back sometime for a better experience.
