No. 131 in Cheltenham

We had a great experience here. We’re in Cheltenham for the literary festival and liked the look of the restaurant. Our food was absolutely superb, especially the sirloin steak - cooked to perfection - and the root vegetable and cashew nut roast - wonderfully tasty and beautifully presented. The staff were friendly and accommodating, with the manager even finding some delicious chocolates to accompany our coffee when we mentioned that we fancied some chocolate! Clearly they go that extra mile to ensure their guests have a superb experience, and we will definitely return.

My friends and I had had this trip booked for a while and had heard great reviews. I was very underwhelmed by the whole experience. I felt like the staff were doing me a favour by being there. It was cold and the food was served cold. My one friend sent her main chicken dish as it was so poorly presented and cold. The rest of us ate out as we were hungry but it was stone cold. When the bill came (they had taken the one dish off) as my friend had had no main dinner, which in itself is not good, I asked if he was going to compensate us for the poor service and food. His answer was “No” I said do you expect me to pay all of the £190 bill, to which he said “yes”. My answer to that was well of course I will, however I will not return as your appreciation of your customers is not to my liking and when I go out for a nice meal to enjoy nice food and drink it is about the experience as well and there was nothing good about the whole experience. Very very disappointing,

Had a great experience from arrival to departure. Food was great, drink were fine, bit service was exceptional. Our server, Lara, was wonderful, as was manager/host who's name I missed. They made effort to celebrate my birthday and genuinely felt so welcome

Wanted a drink here on Sunday evening. No one at entrance but terrace well staffed with lots of empty tables. Wouldn’t serve us there (6.30 on Sunday evening doubt they would fill in the next hour). Shown round the back to the gin and juice area (well waved in the general direction). No staff on the bar (waited a while) and three very loud customers so left.

Failed to impress, embarrassed I recommended it. We had friends visiting from abroad who wanted to take us for brunch as a thank you. As far as I was concerned it was a no brainier 131 was the place to go. How wrong. Waitress took a while to come and take drinks orders, then seemed to forgot the kids drinks orders until prompted. When our food orders came what a disappointment. Sausage doorsteps were 2 doorsteps of bread and sausage but no butter and no presentation. Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine were 2 tiny muffins in the middle of a plate with 2 over cooked poached eggs and just enough hollandaise to cover the eggs, but not the toast. No garnish no nothing, it looked like they had forgotten half the plate. The mushrooms on toast appeared to be spinach on toast with a few mushrooms. I recommended 131 as our friends were new to the town and I thought it would be a great place to sit and watch the world go by whilst eating a delicious spread and give them a flavour of what we could offer. Really disappointing and embarrassed that they think that I think this is a good place to visit. Should have gone to Clementine or one of the other better brunch spots

First time I’ve been here for over a year and what a disappointment….Despite being 70% empty, we had to wait to be seated, after which we had to ask the waitress 3 times to order drinks. The service for the food was even worse and the waiting time between courses was very long and frustrating The food itself was ok but no better than typical pub food albeit far smaller portions In conclusion ,whilst the cost of the meal was 5 star, the standard of food and service was poor and very disappointing.There are several other better quality bar/ restaurants within the immediate area and I would recommend checking out alternatives before a revisit to 131

This is a busy place at weekends . The main bar means people avoid paying for a club entry . The location is good on the terrace , but part of it is covered in a tent type structure . Getting served a drink is a major challenge, always has been . It has not changed . Who is wrong ? Charge high prices , zero service , a d be busy. People seem to accept mediocrity . It is a case of people deciding what they want . A place to be seen for sure. It maybe reflects the paucity of options in town . But , make your decisions . Others are there spending money , it is busy . But accepting such dire service for some , like me , does not work . For others , many , being seen in there means more . This place should be the very best . It could be so much more with some work . It is a cynical money grab that works .

Excellent service and great food. We had a great time and have made plans to go back soon. Definitely recommend if you are looking for somewhere for a special occasion.

Great spot for lunch, very accommodating for kids. The service was so welcoming and special especially from Silvana, who made sure we had everything we needed. Roast chicken and beef were particularly good.

I contacted the Manager (Sam) before visiting with Friends for my Wife's Birthday on Saturday March 2nd..... We were absolutely blown away by the service and attentiveness and cannot thank Sam and his Team enough for making my Wife's Birthday memorable. While some may feel the drinks are expensive....you get what you pay for and we felt we received value for money. Again thanks Sam for your help.......very much appreciated

Absolute ripoff!! We visited tonight and had 1 tiny glass of Prosecco and 1 large glass of wine and were charged £28.50. We were horrified but quietly paid for it and savoured every mouthful. On returning home we discovered that the Prosecco was £9 which is horrifying in itself and the wine was £19.50 FOR 1 glass!!! THIS IS ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL!! Looking on the menu ( now we’re home… we didn’t have this pleasure at the venue) there was an £11 and £15 option on the wine but they automatically served us the £19.50 option! SHAME ON YOU.

I have frequented this place often, however this evening my friend & I paid £28.50 for a glass of Prosecco - not full to the brim & a glass of house rose wine. On looking back at the menu we were charged for the most expensive glass of wine which was £19.50 despite asking for the house wine which cost £11.00 which is what we were served. This place takes every opportunity to take advantage of their customers. Such a shame because the atmosphere and location is great they are just not interested in customer service

No.131 presents an unfortunate narrative of a restaurant grappling with financial challenges?... Underscored by questionable aesthetic choices such as the ostentatious gold leaf ceiling. The subdued ambiance, compounded by high prices in the main dining area, echoes a pervasive sentiment of inadequate value for money, evident in the increasing volume of unfavorable reviews overshadowing the positive ones. Observably, the management team appears to be overcompensating for operational deficiencies, placing undue pressure on an evidently stretched floor staff striving to deliver exceptional service. The noticeable stress and fatigue among the staff do not escape notice. Regrettably, these efforts fall short of mitigating the glaring issue of exorbitant pricing, leaving patrons bemused by the audacity. The owners themselves seem to project an air of elitism, clad in premium Holland Cooper attire while overseeing a struggling enterprise. The plastic marquees, resembling neglected haunted houses, are adorned with cobwebs and spiders, setting the tone for the general state of neglect. The plastic plants, drenched in water and swarmed by flies, add a touch of misery to the already gloomy atmosphere. Dirt and grime seem to be permanent residents, with seat covers emitting unpleasant odors that scream for replacement. The furs on the seats, presumably unwashed for ages, bear the accumulated grease and grime from the countless dissatisfied customers who have unfortunately chosen to grace the establishment. Every time I dine here, it seems staff turnover is a constant revolving door, with a new higher management or restaurant manager appearing every time one dares to return. The floor staff, ever-changing, give off an air of unhappiness, likely stemming from the barrage of justified customer complaints, primarily centered around the astronomical prices. Amidst this dismal environment, the culinary offerings manage to maintain a commendable level of freshness, providing a silver lining. Nevertheless, the freshness of the cuisine cannot fully overshadow the prevailing decay and operational dysfunction that seem to pervade every facet of the No.131 dining experience.

We went for cocktails one Saturday night a few weeks ago in the outdoor lounge. Cocktails were great and were prepared by a super helpful member of staff, Charlotte,0 who couldn't have been more helpful. Lovely to see someone happy to go the extra mile. Thank you Charlotte.

Mixed review here, went for late lunch on a quiet week day, so only a couple of other diners. Staff were very nice and attentive. Service was excellent. The food was good, but a few improvements would have made it excellent. Mainly none of our dishes were hot enough. We had soup, which was lovely. No bread though. The seafood tagliatelle could have done with more clams, but those that were there were still lovely and sweet. The pasta was a bit claggy and stuck together. Steak & frites were nice, loved the salad and tomatos, my steak was medium rare instead of medium, but it was a nice piece and I didn't want to send it back. I enjoyed it, and ate most of it, except for the middle which was too rare for me. Garlic butter was cold and had I known they would, charge £3.50 for it I would have declined. Not about the money, but the value for money. Seabream was nice, but could have been warmer, The mussels were enormous, they were well cleaned, although the one I had was a bit gritty. Despite these issues, the food still tasted good, was well presented and the staff were excellent and for me, it's the staff that make or break an experience. I'll be honest, I'm not keen on dining in a tent on a slanted pavement, but the decor is nice and I found the tables and chairs comfortable. We will give 131 another chance on a busier day.

I went to 131 with my wife and 2 others for a Sunday lunch. We had a fairly average sized lunch and had a nice time although service was slow and the food only mediocre and we to eat in the eyesore of tent city of course. We then got the bill! My share for 2.......wait for it.........was £163. Money isn't the problem here, value for money, however, is and this place is taking liberties. I would advise anybody thinking of going here to go to either Blancs or Cotes who do a better lunch at a much better price and in a building too no less. To be avoided.

What a delightful place, the staff were really friendly and cheerful and the food was scrumptious it’s a lovely location to watch the world go by 😀 my daughter in law and I had mussels which were the best I’ve had since France! They were huge, sweet and cooked beautifully the service was great too. My husband had pork belly which was tender and delicious, my son had flat iron steak which was cooked perfectly we all enjoyed lunch and my husband and I just had to share the Eaton mess dessert w would definitely recommend

My husband and I have frequently visited the 131 terrace restaurant and chose it as the location to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary with breakfast. I am currently 39 +3 weeks pregnant and asked the waitress for a jug of iced tap water. I would like to add that the temperature at the time was 28+ degrees and I was in need of a large amount of water as during pregnancy it is especially dangerous to get overheated. I was informed by the waitress that establishment policy means they are only able to provide small glasses of tap water to the table. I said this wouldn’t be enough and I asked to speak with the restaurant manager and a jug of water was also declined. At this point we chose to walk away from the meal and not dine today. I think it is absolutely disgraceful to not give a heavily pregnant women in an extreme heatwave some cold water in a jug or a larger glass. By not doing this the restaurant and hotel have lost two loyal customers. And also spoilt what was a special day.

Beautiful hotel and lovely sushi restaurant! The bar is very very busy and very noisy..we were fine with but if you are looking for a peaceful stay may not be the place. Rooms however are very lovely!

Our table of 4 was booked for 1330. For starters one of our party asked for the burrata with tomatoes but it was not available so we decided not to do starters. For mains we ordered short ribs for 3 of us and one tiger prawns. After an hour, no short ribs had arrived but the waiter came to the table with a plate of burrata which had just been delivered and apologised for the delay in the delivery of the mains saying that there was an issue in the kitchen. 20 minutes later a waitress came to say that they were just plating up our lunch. It arrived and was well presented but the beef was drier than Ghandi's flip flop, it was just terrible. We had ordered sides of spinach which was fine and also heritage carrots, the orange ones were ok but the purple ones were mullered. Dessert was lovely, I enjoyed mine. Second time we have been and will not be returning.

Poor, slow service with little care for guests. Food is overpriced and overrated. Lots of other restaurants in Cheltenham that are better. We had to chase consumers to order, for our next course, for the bill. Everything was effort.

Josh was absolutely fantastic ! He made me a cocktail off menu with no problem and had amazing customer service. He made me feel right at home and made delicious cocktails. Couldn’t ask for anything more

Disappointed! Love the rooms here but the food was a let down for the price. Tuna starter was lovely but the main which was a £40 rib eye was virtually inedible. Poor cut with more sinew than meat, complained and had a glass of wine and 10% taken from the bill and told it no uncertain term as it was my fault and I shouldn’t have ordered it rare! Will go out for dinner next time.

Incredible hotel. We have stayed in 5 star hotels all over the world and room 23 in this hotel is better than any of them. Plus the food here (just had dinner) is incredible. Would give this hotel and dinner six stars if we could. The staff are great too. Great sense of humour and perfect service.

Really disappointing. Waiting at the front desk with no one around, service was slow and when the food turned up it was very poor, in fact they completely forgot my order and to be honest I wish I had not reminded them. I have eaten here a few times and been very happy but they have obviously given up. A shambles.

Awful filet steak , that was poor in cut and preparation . Waiter did react , and replaced with another cut , but really it should not have been served like that . Location is great even if the covid tents really should be removed now as it ruins the appearance of the property . There used to be a great restaurant inside the building but that is now a Japanese restaurant . Service was great , which contrasts with the bar areas where it is often poor . The location is perfect central Cheltenham. It is one of the most expensive locations in town too so you expect the best . It just feels like there is an opportunity to do so much better with the building and structure , location and inherent ambience of the architecture. Must try harder is probably the best thing to conclude . Please do as it has the potential to be the best .

Friendly welcome, nice and warm even on a cold day, nice decor. Good menu for lunch, tasty food, wine pricey, but then I'm used to Spanish prices ;)
