We have often visited the Newtown for meals though this was the first this year. We had decided to go there tonight for an anniversary meal. The starter was good (we both had the same) and the time waited was acceptable to us. In saying that another couple walked out after waiting over half an hour for a starter , maybe we were lucky? Our main courses were more disappointing. My wife ordered the Scampi which was to be served with peas. My wife asked if it was possible to have mushy peas instead of garden peas, which she was told was fine. However my wife asked if it were not possible could she have onion rings instead. What turned up was partially mashed garden peas which I did not feel to be acceptable and they were left uneaten! My main should have been served on a bed of spinach mash. My recollection is of spinach being a green leafy vegetable which when mashed with potato should change the potato to a more green colour and should change the texture of the potato. The mash however had no evidence of spinach whatsoever. When I queried this with the very helpful waitress she went to the kitchen and returned saying that she had been told the spinach was mashed into the potato....it most certainly was not! Don't get me wrong, what was produced was perfectly tasty but we had both been left disappointed with the chef's efforts when asked to provide specific items. No offer of compensation was made. We had fully intended to have desserts but instead paid the bill and left. Very disappointing and doubt if we will return.

A quirky hotel about 10 mins walk to the sea shore. The decore is excellent and the staff very friendly. The room was small but comfortable. The bar prices were very reasonable but the breakfast room was far too small to cope with the amount of people wanting to eat at the same time with their friends & family. The brown bread ran out and the choice of cereals and fruit was not very good. Not too bad for the £99 price paid per room per night.

I went here for a "special" Sunday lunch with family ranging in age from 8 to 67, and was not disappointed. The staff could not have been more helpful. Also the choice of roast meats was very good with very generous portions and plenty of vegetables. We stayed at this hotel and therefore used the restaurant. The food was good but service was slow. The discount mentioned on booking.com was not applied apart from the first night...! The tables are way too high for those chairs and the chairs are rather uncomfortable. We heard other guests saying the same out loud to staff. At checkout, we were presented with a bill from the bar when we have never been at the bar...

We had a fabulous night, with entertainment and a meal deal. The singer was a Neil Diamond tribute, and the likeness to original singer's voice was generally was very good. He adorned a dodgy wig, but that added to the fun as he removed at times and was bald ! The meals that came out looked very nicely presented, and the lasagna was beautiful. It came with salad and garlic bread, which I loved. I believe this was the first theme nights of many, with Blues Brothers, and Dolly Parton and a Party night coming in near future. We all had a great evening and will most certainly be returning, it was good value, and had an excellent party atmosphere.

Food was ok but bit disappointed that it seemed it was cooked from frozen rather than fresh. Well that is the only reason I can think why the breaded cheese was runny on outside and solid in the middle. A few minor improvements would made for a good meal in nice surroundings

It is so easy to make them but i think this one came out of a packet and had been deep fried within an inch of its life. Cheesecake for pudding was yummy though. Good price!

Me and my husband used to live in the area and this was our favourite restaurant, and as we were visiting the area for a wedding decided to stay at the hotel and were very much looking forward to dining in the restaurant where we had had so many great meals and had always experienced excellent customer service. We arrived to find that the menu had completely changed which we were willing to embrace but were left completely disappointed with the overall experience. We ordered cocktails before our meal... Which they had written in their bar menu... And three members of staff looked at me with utter disgust at the thought of having to make them, which is probably why it took over 20 minutes for them to do so!! We were seated in the empty restaurant which had no mood lighting, no music and no individual server to see to our needs, as there always had been on previous visits. From here the person who served us was very unknowledgable about the everything and we were made to feel completely unwelcome. In the evening we ordered drinks to take to the room, my hot chocolate was tasty but Luke warm at best and my husband ordered a bottle of red wine, which they didn't have a full bottle of so they poured two half bottles into one and gave it to him, which was okay, however the wine tasted like it had been watered down and so was returned. The food was okay (nothing like it used to be) but if you want a good dining experience then I would completely avoid here. We certainly will not be returning again!

In August this year I photographed a wedding here. I cannot compliment the staff more for what was a very smoothly run day, The staff catered the deserts to the brides favourite pudding (bread and butter pudding with custard) and were also very flexible when there was a large break between the main and desert after the guests had gone outside to enjoy the sunshine. and have a break from food. The hotel really makes the most of their outdoor space, and with a bouncy castle for the little ones and plenty of seating in the sun and under shelter, the guests were all very happy. Another point worth complimenting them on was the level of cooperation before the wedding day. The bride and groom made several visits to the hotel before the wedding day to organise things, and I went along on the final meeting with the bride to discuss how the photos would go with the schedule of the day. To be able to visit a wedding venue this easily and regularly can be rare- compliments to Carol!Photography wise there are plenty of cute spots for photos at the hotel, which can be difficult with hotels without large grounds or gardens. Being just a couple of minutes from the beach by car also meant we were easily able to sneak off to the beach for some romantic shots of the newly weds.Very much looking forward to working with Carol and the team again in December on my next wedding there!

The surroundings are attractive, the food was good and well presented. However, the service was so poor, 1 young waiter appeared to be running the dining room ( it wasn't busy at all) but he was unable to organise himself drifting from one table to another, heard to be saying "I'm sorry". Forgot to take our pudding order, coffee wasn't even offered. A manager wandered in and out of the restaurant doing very little, except to give us the wrong bill. What a shame for the chef who is obviously is competent and producing good food.

Please please really consider your options before spending your money and placing your trust for a good time, welcoming environment and good service in this hotel and restaurant.I saw a bad review before i approached this hotel, i gave them the benefit of the doubt i now wish i didn't waste our time. But most of all be aware of the flaws in the management structure (especially regarding weddings, its likely you will deal with different people so you have no real way off knowing will your day pan out as you plan as no one person deals with it consistently)We had visited here twice after booking our wedding and received bad meals, (one was floating in water) we communicated this to the management and were then told that we would get complimentary meals by the THEN manager. This didn't happen along with the free wedding tasting that they then tried to charge us for (think this was third manager as staff turnover here is a real issue and especially in the kitchen!)Even the prices we agreed for our wedding they were changed later by the wedding coordinator, she was very unprofessional and not would you would say a dynamic person (And yes she would be coordinating your wedding SCARY!) There was no personal service and when we voiced our concerns about the food and asked her to discuss the issues with the owner so we could get reassurance as to be honest its not cheap for a wedding package and food, she replied i suggest you take your wedding elsewhere! The only thing i can positively comment on is the cleanliness of the hotel and rooms.I am so glad we did have our wedding elsewhere the food was amazing, we picked what we wanted not what the hotel stipulated. I have heard a lot of bad feedback and disappointed wedding couples and restaurant customers didn't have such a lucky escape.I don't usually leave bad reviews but as a newly wedded couple i couldn't let others not be aware and be upset as i was which should of been such a special time.As a business owner myself any customer concerns should be deal with constructively and i really feel the owner doesn't really have an understanding of what goes on in his own business or what reputation his kitchen and wedding coordinator is giving him. To be honest he didn't even say hello when we had our wedding visits and bother to contact us to discuss our concerns he just seems disinterested and concerned about profit! It doesn't matter how much you change things, new decor, restaurants, staff, a good establishment should be managed from the top down and where this venue falls down is due to the owner and senior staff.SERVICE is what counts, as i said approach with CAUTION!Very relived wedding customers.

My Mum wanted to write this review:-On 5th July we came to celebrate my Husbands 70th Birthday, The staff, Josh in particular was very helpful, because he organized it, sorted out a special menu to cater for everyone, with special dietary requirements and was outstanding in every respect. We were able to come in early to decorate the table, and although the room had a few other guests we felt like we had the place to ourselves. The other staff were very attentive too btw. The meals were delicious and very well presented and the staff were very quick and organized when dishing out the meals. Overall we were very impressed from day one at the initial meeting and they really helped in making this a special night for the whole family.

This restaurant has obviously had some investment during the past year. The seating, tables and overall environment have been improved a lot and it is now a very pleasant place to eat. The food on Mothers Day was very good value at £15 per head and the wine choice excellent (try the Montepulciano Red) and the service was superb. Looking at past reviews I'm wondering if they ate at the same place ! However, it is good to see a local restaurant come good and I believe in this case the effort has been worth it. The were several choices of meat in the roast provided and we can certainly vouch for the quality of the Pork and Beef; I can also recommend their Italian version of bread and butter pudding as well as the many varieties of ice cream and sorbets for sweet. All in all, a lovely lunch, and we would be very happy to return

This is a charming hotel. We had a Sunday lunch carvery and found the food truly delicious, generous portions and really very good value for money. The staff are friendly and professional. Our only negative comment is the restaurant itself. We used to eat in the delightful main restaurant but this was closed. The second less ambient restaurant needs mirrors, flowers, and ornaments to give it some character. It felt as if we were eating in a cafe. The rest of the hotel has such charm I do wonder why no attention has been given to the "Carvery" room? But the service, cuisine and value were superb. Just got back from one of the Steakj NIghts advertised in the local press. Simple to say DONT BOTHER. No disrespect to the servers in the restaraunt - but we presented our vouchers to be told they were no longer valid - and they had just been advertised in the local press (Hayling Islander) - But to start with the bar staff were nothinbg short of useless in understanding their "whose next" list. Only one barman to serve 35 to 50 people and hewcomers wre being served as they approached the bar rather than those that had been waiting fo0r some time - and when questioned - didnt actually give a [--]. Trying to order wine at the table was a serious problem and ended up in all sorts of issues with wrong wine supplied etc.Food (once the order was taken) took a bit of time to come out. But when you consider was not only catering for the "Steak Night" people but also for the hotel restaraunt - she was exteremely stretched to perform. She had not been trained on the foods or wine on offer (on the menu and wine list) but really did her best to cover all angles. All in all a pretty poor performance (in my view mainly down to management [--] ups) I would give a 3 out of 10. The Fillet steal priced at £17.95 was absolutely no better then the £9.95 rib eye (in other words it was awful) - and be careful on your wine order as that was also [--] up. Marks out of 10 - I'd give it 3 and a very wide berth next time.

I stayed here on 9-10 Nov 2024 with my partner, going to an event nearby. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and that's where the compliments end. Because unfortunately the lovely bed was in a room that was in this hotel, which was regrettably dreadful. My expectations for the hotel were not great. But the location was ideal for our reason to stay. The hotel smells damp from the minute you embark on the trek to your room up the many stairs that flail off in different directions. Our first room smelt old and mouldy - the wardrobe was unusable because of this. My partner decided to use the bath (after a quick clean) which was all going well until she tried to stop it. The cold tap wouldn't turn off, sending us into a mild panic. I shot off an the expedition back to the reception, where I quickly interrupted the two chatting staff (still in a mild panic) to explain that we can not turn the cold water tap off in the bathroom. The response was a very serious, 'Would you like us to come and take a look?' 'Either that, or your hotel might flood, I guess!' By now, I could have quite easily cancelled my evening plans and just driven home, but they soon realised the issues and moved us to another room. The new room (49) was much more modern - 1990's I'd say compared to 1970s in the previous room. The bathroom was less mouldy and the taps worked which was a start. The wardrobe also smelt fresher. Despite being told when we checked in that our room was not near the downstairs wedding party, we were actually on the top floor directly right above it. So, when came back to the room at 11 ready for bed, the room was shaking and filled with the beat of what seemed like a rave downstairs. My partner was none to pleased to say the least and shot off back on the journey down to the reception. (If you want to get your daily steps in, this may be the hotel for you if you can cope with all the other stuff BTW). When she argued that we were told that we would be nowhere near the party, the answer was along the lines of... 'Oh no, all the rooms are either near the bar or the venue. She wouldn't have said that'. The only plus was that the party was finishing at 11.30. So, at around 11.20 the rave stopped and we had to endure a room full of party goers hammering out Angels by Robbie Williams, followed by You'll Never Walk Alone before the music stopped and the throng of people went for a loud chat outside, right beneath out window in the car park. Thank heavens for ear plugs. Needless to say, We'll Never Stay Again.
