Really lovely place to stay. Staff are very welcoming great service. Breakfast was 👌👌👌, loved the local ingredients. The sea view double room had a good working space by the beautiful bay windows, I was lucky enough to be visiting on a sunny winters day which made it even better. The restaurant area also has a great working space by the bay windows. Not to mention great location for the beach Look forward to coming back here. Had everything I needed

A lovely friendly place to stay and a great breakfast. I was welcomed like an old friend when I entered. I was taken to my room with an offer to carry the luggage then shown around the room to see where everything I needed was. The place is spotless. The room very comfortable. Breakfast was great: I had the avocado toast with poached egg, cooked to perfection. I have given the room 5/5 - whilst the room was fairly small, for the price it is exceptional. This place is a little gem and worth every penny, and more, of the room rate. Wholly recommend.

I visited for a few days with my dad and had a lovely time in Brighton. The location is the best part of this hotel as easy routes on foot to the beach and the town centre and only a short drive to the marina. Parking wasn’t an issue due to the zone C permits you can buy for a very fair price from reception. The hotel itself: quite a cozy B&B with rooms that have everything you need included, albeit they are quite small, especially the bathrooms. The rooms and hotel are very clean and well taken care of. In my room the windows were broken and the blinds were broken also - I could only open one window and the blinds remained shut over my view of the sea, which was disappointing. I raised this with reception, as well as my plug in fan not working and it was noted but not addressed. Breakfast is a little compact as you literally are sitting next to other visitors with very little spacing - this is just down to the hotels size. All in all, a happy visit and a good stay. I would stay again, although next time I’d make a fuss that if I’m paying a premium for a sea view, I don’t have a blind blocking this view!

Good points : nice little charming hotel tastefully renovated. Situated in a charming so British street. Central a few minutes walk from the pier. Quiet, cozy, comfortable room with a lovely view of the pretty facades of the buildings opposite and a small sea view to the side. Beautiful decoration of the breakfast room. Friendly French manager. Negative points : parking in Brighton is complicated. Allow £2/3 per hour depending on the street. Depending on your arrival and departure time, it may be worth purchasing an £8 hotel voucher for the day. Good breakfast served at the table, no buffet, downside: hot chocolate and scrambled eggs not good (= orange color (powder?), not acceptable for a 4 star). Nice staff but presentation to be reviewed (unshaven and in a t-shirt the day before, average for a 4 star...) We were interested in eating in the evening but this gentleman was not very motivated to reheat (...) , not very professional, so we ate elsewhere. Well, a bit pricey £240 for 3 at the end of August.

We received a Christmas Present of a voucher for this place. Brighton being as it is we didn't have high expectations, so many places are distinctly average and often over priced, with service for the masses. What a surprise! We were given a dinner voucher as a wedding present, which came with a small choice of restaurants in Brighton. Not wanting to go to a restaurant chain we thought we’d try The New Steine Restaurant in Kemptown. We had a wonderful evening! The menu is French and offers a good selection without bombarding you with too many options, therefore allowing the chef to focus more on individual dishes, which really came through in each of our 3 courses. There’s a nice selection of wines, our choice of which was over the amount on the voucher, but the (very lovely, chic) owner was happy to over look this which was extremely kind and gave us a vibe that customer satisfaction was more important than profit - a rare quality in this day and age. So we had a great evening and have already spoken with friends about dinner here in the near future! If you like eating in mainstream restaurants then this probably isn’t the place for you, but if you like something a little different with a small but perfectly formed and very tasty menu, then you should definitely try out the New Steine Restaurant.

The Restaurant itself was very pleasant. Some of the staff were under trained to serve food. The food was very basic not what i had expected, more like what you would get at a Harvester. White wine should be served chilled or cold, not room temperature and should also have the appropriate cooler. Dishes should be put on the table and not handed to you which i did not like. The ambience was very nice, i just feel it needs to be improved with the staffing and food as this could be a really nice venue. I must say we did find it very clean and the toilets were spotless.

No teníamos postre. También debe decirse que la música solo se reproducía cuando pedíamos algo. No fue una gran experiencia en general, y fue caro para lo poco que teníamos.

There were 4 of us that endured an evening here, of what what I can only describe as interesting to say the least. I was expecting Basil Fawlty to appear at any moment. The restaurant itself is in a small room that feels like someones living room, with a bar at the top which also doubles as hotel reception, and the radio in the background providing ambience. We were greeted by giggling girls whom took our order and continued to giggle throughout the evening - again - lovely staff - if not in a slightly unusual manner. The choice was plentiful - although upon ordering it took 10/15 minutes before they came back and told 3 of us that 'the chef wasn't able to get any pork cheeks today' It was becoming clear at this point that the pig was the lucky one in more ways that one. We had the starter, which was the meat platter with toast - and it quelle surpris - it was meat with toast - totally overpriced but nice enough for what it was. Then the mains arrived to much amusement, and it was at this point we started to understand why the girls giggle so much, as we started to do the same - the whole experience does this to you! My duck confit was deep fried duck - 100% definately dead and deepfried 3 times just to make sure - accompanied with 4 small potatoes and lettuce. For £16. My other friends chose Risotto - which resemlbed childs puke, in both looks and taste. There was a steak - again around the £17/18 mark which was flatter than a pancake and therefore had no chance of being cooked properly and the last dish on the table consisted of calamari in mush - best way to describe it. The only picture I took, due to the astonishment of the experience and the laughter, was sadly of dessert - and I think it sums the whole evening up. It's so tough to write something with such a negative stance on here, as we are the most UNFUSSY of people when it comes to eating, but I also know that this forum does have some guidance on peoples choice - but that is the very reason why I HAVE written this - I would hate to think ANYONE would waste their money like we did. I only wish we had someone to have given us the same guidance before we visited. The staff and their strange but charming giggling was it's only saving grace. If ANYTHING, I hope the owner reads this and deals with the situation before it destroys a business. On the other hand - if you want a laugh - GO!

We went with a Groupon voucher. The staff were pleasant enough although seemed somewhat inexperienced. At one point, I'm guessing it was the owner who walked in, as he had a suit and a purposeful stride but proceeded to commandeer the atmosphere of the dining room with conversations on the phone. It would appear that the dining room is also the reception area, as our meal had the soundtrack of ring tones and disgruntled guests. I found this off putting. Only halfway through was any music put on in the background which served to cover up the noise. The food itself was nice. Not great, but good value. However, I don't think I would return. It is nothing special and not a place where I felt comfortable spending too long, as it was quite clear they were busy dealing with the requests of guests actually staying in the hotel.

Visited with friends on a Wednesday night and we were the only ones in. This is my 4th visit as I do like this place - the food is consistently good - however - on this occasion there were no chips and no mushrooms - when you fancy a mushroom omelette and chips - not great. I would love to see this restaurant survive because it deserves to but it is off the main road and as its a b & b you would not necessarily think of it. The service is always friendly but I've never seen the same staff twice- they constantly seem to be learning. All my group enjoyed the food- commenting on how good it was. Lack of basics was disappointing - no chips- there were potatoes so I assume not too difficult to convert. This is a great place for a chat as it is quiet and so close to St James street and the beach making a good location if visiting the seafront. Do make effort to find this gem.

Really nice atmosphere and very friendly staff, and although the food is good the menu has become really boring as this hasn't been changed for ages. Went there using a Groupon voucher. £23 for three courses for two people. The restaurant is basically a front room of a hotel in a terrace of Victorian Buildings. It caters for about twenty covers. The size gives a cosy more intimate atmosphere and we chatted to several of the other diners, all mainly on Groupon vouchers. There were two waiters, a gentleman and a lady and they were both very efficient and pleasant.Drinking water was supplied without being requested and the white wine was very pleasant. We had steak as the main with a £2.50 surcharge, one was requested medium and the other well done and both were cooked precisely as requested, quite unusual for local restaurants. We were both pleased with all three courses and with chatting to other guests stayed much longer than we had anticipated. Will certainly return, if a voucher offer is available, otherwise the listed menu prices are a little steep and would be enough to deter us.Nice ambiance and good staff, they deserve to succeed.

At first glance it is a nice cosy place, almost feels like something somewhere on the continent. However after our first impression things went downhill. First of all we had the Assiette de Charcuterie – for two. The big surprise is that it was huge. Some would say that is not a bad thing. But the the bad part of it was that most of the meats were sliced not ultra-thin as you would expect, but on the thicker side, which is somehow much less appetizing. It also didn't really seem like top-quality charcuterie. (seemed more like something you'd get at Tesco). There was also way too much of it to be an appetizer. Would be better to lower the price and give a smaller portion. The mains were not outstanding but okay, but by that time we didn't have much hunger left. We had desert since it was included in our offer but again the ice cream was nothing to write home about. Not like a fine homemade ice cream, or a quality ice cream such as Haagen Dazs. The other aspect of the restaurant which we found not to our taste was the pop art paintings of dogs in various human settings which were everywhere.. We had the uneasy feeling of being being stared at by dogs dressed up in smoking jackets! It felt strangely unsettling. I got the impression that maybe one of the owners is the artist and this is the big chance to display his/her work? (there is actually an entry about this on their website entitled "‘We are the Dogs’ -- Hotel Exhibition") To each his own, but I do not think we would ever go back while those pictures are on exhibit.

Went with my girlfriend who had got a group on voucher and overall we both left happy. However it would have been expensive for what it was without the offer. Very small, essentially front room of a house, restaurant. Decor was ok, usual vastly overpriced 'paintings' that it seems to be fashionable to try and flog in Brighton. Starters were nice, a bottle of tap water was provided and it was implied it was specially made for the restaurant though clearly was just filled up from the tap. Waitresses were very nice especially as they were forced to wear very scruffy branded polo shirts. Steak for main was good however my girlfriends definitely wasn't cooked how she had ordered it. Really not that tricky. My desert, supposedly lemon sorbet, was inedible. Which was a real downer. Surely the minimum of making sure your food can be eaten should be maintained. Anyway, perfectly enjoyable evening but certainly wouldn't rush back and both felt we could've got better food with probably better service in nicer surroundings in a local chain restaurant.

Have just got back from an evening at this cute little gem of a restaurant tucked away on a small street of mostly residential homes and guesthouses in Brighton. My husband and self went on a Groupon deal this time though this will be our third visit in the last couple of years or so.We had three courses to choose from and I went for crabcakes with homemade tartare sauce and salad for starter, husband had duck rillette(pate) with toast and salad garnish, both looked lovely and tasted amazing.Next I had chicken breast stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach served with dauphinoise potato and salad, all really tasty and moorish, husband went for the steak with frites and salad which was again delicious. For desert we both had creme brulee which we love and this is as it should be,served in a wide shallow dish to allow for plenty of caramelised crackling topping(reminded me of toffee apples coating) with a smooth creamy underlayer. This is a very intimate restaurant which only seats a max of around 18 or so diners but is the better for that and the service is quick, helpful and efficient yet not intrusive.Without a voucher it is probably a bit dearer than some(around £53 for a three course meal for two) but if you want somewhere extra nice to dine out then you wont go far wrong here.We will definitely be back again soon!

Visited last week as a party of 4 using Groupon vouchers. Small restaurant in the dining room of a hotel. Staff were very friendly and attentive, true they were wearing staff polo shirts, but do not understand why this was a problem as mentioned in an earlier review. That were very neat clean and tidy.Food was very acceptable, one of the best steaks that I have for a while. All enjoyed all 3 courses. Drinks prices for Brighton were acceptable being comparable with local bars.Atmosphere was good, seemed to used by hotel guests as well as other diners. We all agree that we would return again.

Went with friends as part of an offerFirst impressions was a sort of tatty front room. Waitress was French and friendly. Although all wearing rather scruffy polo shirts. I ordered avocado and salmon tartare to start. When it arrived the waitress just said they had run out of avocado so we had been given all salmon. Annoying not to be given the option to chose something elseAnd it was horrible. Just a large portion of chopped raw salmon and onion. None of us could really eat itThe sea bream fillet for main course was ok. Served with a rather overcooked ratatouille and riceTiramisu for pudding was homemade which was nice but too creamy and needed more coffee and a bit more flavour to itI should think the steak is probably the best option. Was lovely just to see our friends and was relaxed atmosphere. But won't be rushing back.

Very friendly staff, lovely room (but we had an upgrade, so cannot answer for the basic rooms), very clean and well decorated. Lovely location, just off the seafront and close to the centre. But the food. A French menu, the food was beautifully cooked and presented. For the main course, we both had stuffed guinea fowl. Absolutely delicious.

A friend bought me a voucher for dinner for my birthday and my wife and I booked in for an early evening meal. The menu was a bit limited but I would have eaten anything on it. Service was good and we were well looked after for the whole evening. The food was perfectly prepared and very tasty and we both very much enjoyed our selections. The only thing I could find fault with was that as more people arrived the room got uncomfortably hot without A/C until we could bare it no longer and had to leave to cool down. The evening was pleasant and good value for nice food so over all I would recommend a visit but maybe go early especially when the summer months come

If you haven't been to this restaurant before, you simply must go. The food is amazing, the service is brilliant. We have eaten all over the world in an lot of 5 star restaurants. I really wouldn't take to much notice of the negative comments from reviewers, as I really don't think they are used to eating out on a regular basis. I think that some people get real pleasure from leaving really negative comments for so many businesses, without a care in the world. This restaurant is really brilliant value, situated just off the seafront, you simply must visit. We visited this evening, and had a brilliant three course meal, with wine and coffee. Thanks for another brilliant evening.

I bought my son and his girlfriend a weekend in Brighton and also bought two vouchers from Groupon for meals for the two night stay. One of the restaurants was The New Steine Restaurant and my husband and I went along to join them for the meal. It's a small hotel and the restaurant is quite small too, we were shown to our table and the staff were quite attentive, we ordered our food and drinks and waited for the food, starters were OK, I had pate, which was nice, but there wasn't enough toast for the pate, my husband had a salad which was also ok, my son and his girlfriend had a sharing platter of cold meats and pate, which seemed ok. The main meals were not good at all though, my son and I had Pork Cheeks with mashed potato and a red wine gravy, some of the pork cheeks were so over done and hard I thought it was bone, the mashed potato was a strange grey colour and not good at all, the gravy was quite thick but ok. There were no vegetables that came with it, my husband ordered grilled sea bass which was very dry and overlooked. Luckily he had ordered some Mediterranean vegetables as a side order which we all shared, the most decent meal was my sons girlfriends meal, she ordered steak and chips. All in all we didn't enjoy the food so would not be going back. I'd like to think we weren't treated any different because we had a voucher :/

We booked to go to the New Steine restaurant as part of a Groupon deal, so didn't have massively high expectations.. which was probably a good thing, as high expectations would not have been met..First impressions were a little odd- the restaurant itself looks a bit like someone's living room with some tables in it, there was also only one other occupied table when we arrived which again is always a little strange, but I will say that it was very cosy, and as the evening went on we felt a lot more comfortable. Staff were very friendly and service was good, but I must say I was disappointed by the food. I suppose this is always a case of expectation, and having paid such a minimal amount for a 3 course dinner, I wouldn't say that I expected a gourmet smorgasbord, but had I been paying the actual prices quoted on the menus for the food I would have been very disappointed. My starter was perfectly reasonable, duck rillette with toast, but my main course let the whole thing down. I ordered the belly of pork and was told that 'seasonal vegetables' needed to be ordered as a side. I know I paid very little for the three courses, but I never see how you can treat vegetables as a side dish, unless you are ordering extra vegetables on top of those which have already been provided. When would you deliberately want to order a meal, which without vegetables would just be meat, potato and gravy? Just include them already and charge a bit more for the whole dish..On the subject of the vegetables, these were touted as seasonal- so I expected a few brassicas and maybe a carrot, but what I was served was stewed celery and, what was effectively, a ratatouille.. this confused and displeased me, both variations were mushy and swimming in oil.Final complaint would be against the profiteroles.. Again, I just feel like I didn't get what I expected or wanted. The profiteroles were filled with vanilla ice cream, rather than cream.. I'm making a wistful sad face even as I'm typing this.. I wanted normal profiteroles..I do sound like a right ole whingy-whingebag, complaining about everything, actually I didn't mind some of the disappointing things simply because we were paying peanuts for the meal and it was more about getting out as a couple than fine dining, but would I go back (even with a voucher?) no... It might not be a favourable comparison, but I would liken the dinner we had to one you might receive if one of your friends tried to host a 'come dine with me style' night. Good ideas, slightly below par execution, and a general naivety to the place.

We attended this restaurant having received a voucher from groupon. The menu was of limited choice, There was four of us and for starters we chose duck pâté on warm toast , escargot in puff pastry and tartar salmon, The starters were faultless. For main course we chose Beef bourgeon with potatoes , Sussex pork cheeks with vegetables and potatoes and duck confit with vegetables. Both courses were lovely, The restaurant was intimate and cosy. The staff were friendly, it was clean the toilets were perfect, we would return. My only other concern was had we not taken the voucher I found the menu was slightly pricey for what was on offer,

We have just returned from our Groupon offer to the New Steine. The food was very tasty however we were really disappointed at the portion sizes. This is the fourth time we have brought the offer and have always had a fantastic meal with normal portion sizes however, I would rather pay more for the deal and have a decent portion than have to come home for a bowl of cereal!

Visited The New stein Hotel bistro for the uptenth time and although this restaurant has always been excellent in the past this time it was not so good this time. We had Duck Roulette Pate & Smoked Tartar, served with warm toast the Duck was good and the Smoked Tartar was excellent. Then we had Sirloin Steak, with salad and chips & Sussex Braised Pork Cheeks, in a red wine & shallot sauce, served with mashed potatoes. The Steak was very Good, however, the Braised Pork Cheeks were not up to their normal standard and were basically undercooked. We then went on to coffees which as normal were very good.Overall a good experience and the staff were as normal very atentative. Will go back again when hopefully the new chief will get the Sussex Braised Pork Cheeks better i.e. cooked a lot longer.Thank you New Steine Restaurant and will see you again.

I've been to this bistro about 3-4 times and the first few times the food was absolutely amazing. But we went back about a month ago and I'm not sure if they changed management, but I ordered the same entrée I always did (the scallops) and they didn't taste the same... It looked exactly the same but it didn't taste as good as it used to. They also didn't have any foie gras which was disappointing as well. The portions seemed smaller as well.I'm definitely disappointed.

I am very upset to see Frois gras duck or goose liver sold here . This is an evil act of cruelty by those who produce it and those who buy it . these poor animals spwnd their miserable lives having pipes shoved down their throats a couple of times a day and force feed grain until their liver enlarges and many die of the stress or medical problems this causes. avoid this place like the plague until this is off the menu...

We have visited the restaurant for a French-themed dinner and it delivered up to our expectations the food was good, with decent sized portions. We hadn't heard of this place, despite being local and so went with no expectations - but actually this was an excellent meal. Extremely good value - the portions are huge. I couldn't finish my main, which is almost unheard of. We shared a charcuterie to start, and both had the Sea bream to follow. Also a portion of the best gratin dauphinoise I've had. Followed by a very well executed chocolate mousse and a decent espresso. Cannot fault the meal. The staff were really lovely, friendly and attentive without hovering. We will definitely be back, thanks for a lovely evening.

We had a Groupon discount and was therefore very good value for money. My soup starter was very nice, steak was ordered medium but was somewhat overcooked, duck and desert ok. At full price my girlfriend and I would have been extremely disappointed with the meal, however with the voucher, or taking advantage of one of the set menus (which offer a range of options), then it is a good (but not spectacular) choice,Service was a little slow, but they were quite busy. Steak came with some salad which was nice. Venue was inside a hotel, so seemed a bit odd to begin with, but was laid out well. I would go back for the set menu if in the area, but would order steak medium-rare.

Last night with some trepidation we went back to Cote Brighton. From its opening it was our favourite restaurant but the standard went down culminating in a a disaster last New Year's Eve. I am happy to say that last night everything was great. Food arrived hot and tasty, the service was impressive, big shout out to Anna who went the extra mile to make it an evening to remember. We will be going again, maybe not for New Year's Eve this time.

Sad to say the cover over the rear garden has gone thanks to our useless council, but a planning request is in using the petition as proof the roof is needed. The menu is still expansive, from peppers du padron to fillet and giant prawns. Excellent quality and quantity.
