Nelson Hotel in Wirral

Disgusting...starter served after the main course, salad and sauce missing, over cooked and cold! Mains mac & cheese had better pot noodle, microwaved cheap supermarket food, Hunters chicken cold, rotted salad on both meals, no staff checked in with us throughout! If anyone says the food is cooked fresh to order then this is a lie. Worst meal I have ever had.

Christmas Dinner. Service ultra slow and told so many times being plated up. Understand it’s busy but tables booked in advance for 1.30 and not starting service until 2.30. We had a 3 year old with us who was well behaved but was getting tired quickly.

Great Xmas meal had last night. The service was brilliant couldn’t fault it. The lads serving were a credit to the pub 👍

Pre ordered off the Christmas menu, very poor quality and over priced. Not restaurant quality food and wouldn't even say it was decent pub food. Starter of brie wedges like rubber, bit like the frozen foods you get at cheap freezer shops. Main was poached salmon full of bones, covered in a packet mix hollandaise sauce, which looked a strange colour and congealed .the cook must have been worried the salmon was dry so added a jug of more of the congealed sauce. Was meant to be served with roast potatoes and vegetables but came with just rice. Then charged over £24 for it. This pub could be so much better, we live locally and would eat and drink here often if it was better quality but definitely will not be returning. Staff not busy and loads of them just milling around. Think management should be taking the rains on this business before seeing it run into the ground. Response Thanks for your prompt reply Gary. Yes I am part of the Monday yoga class and didn't want to spoil the meal for the rest of the group last night so kept quiet, but that's why reviews are important to help businesses get customer feedback to improve. We were only a small group and could have been served by 2 staff. I just feel disappointed as wallasey is crying out for a decent destination pub serving quality food. The venue has been refurbished well and still has lots of character so was looking forward to trying your food since you took over. We often have lots of family get together and end up going further a field for good food. I would much rather support local businesses.

Just moved to the area me and my partner thought we try out the local pub for Sunday lunch. We had the roast dinner and it was excellent with plenty on the plate. The staff were very nice and courteous. Very pleased with our visit.

Nice pub, lovely refurbishment, and the food is tasty and reasonably priced.

It was a great atmosphere. The staff were very attentive. Good range of drinks and food. A bit chilly at first but moved us to a warmer spot. Brilliant time with friends.

There is a marked difference between the description on the menu and what actually appeared on the plate. Frozen food poorly reheated, pretending to be something more exotic. The crispy Korean chicken burger had nothing to indicate it's origin by the flavour. Maybe the person prepped it whilst watching Squid Game. As for the Katsu Curry Tempura prawns -so disappointing that the kitchen staff and the menu designers should be banned from being near a fryer. The whole menu is a travesty of lies. The sad thing is it isn't hard to provide decent pub grub. Even Wetherspoons can do it.

Was staying in a local air B and B and this place was just around the corner. Wanted to eat before heading off to the city for the evening and it did not disappoint. Food was very nice and plentiful and staff were exceptionally pleasant - would certainly recommend

Went to this pub met the staff had a great meal served with prompt attention from the staff. Met the Landlord who came around asking if everyone was OK. I thought this was unusual as you dont get this attention in most places. Would recommend the nelson for great hospitality and excellent food served with a smile. We'll done guys well appreciated.

We often frequent the Nelson pub after rehearsals for many of our shows. It's a good chance for us all to wind down and have something to eat and drink after a long day. Gary is always welcoming and couldn't do any more to accommodate us. Lewis and Serena worked the bar, and their customer service is second to none! They were fantastic and on hand for anything we needed. The food was great and Gary keeps a lovely pint. We can't waiting for our next visit over the next few weeks. Thank you for your hospitality Gary. We give you 5+ stars

This is a genuine gem in Wallasey. A friendly restaurant with a local feel. The staff are informed, professional and helpful. Prices are competitive and the "offers" well worth looking at. I will be advising my family and friends of this easily accessible and welcoming establishment.

Ordered for around 6 of us this morning and the food was amazing😍. Cheese was grilled until perfectly crispy on hunters chicken and everyone's food was piping hot. Staff are very inviting and friendly will definitely be returning again

Nice cozy pub but food was awful. I expected more since the menu design, layout and prices gives the impression that this is higher quality than your average pub meal. The food looked dull when it arrived, almost like it had been cooked hours before and then reheated. (I don't believe that to be true, just the only way I can explain). The meat on the Mixed Grill was dry, hard and tasted weird. Considering we were the first people to order at lunch time and it was far from busy, the excuse just wasn't there. A shame really as food used to be lovely here.

Been a few times since it’s changed hands and always had great service. Food is good and the beer and alcohol selection is great. It’s all about those personal touches, and being included in the debate over fruit salad and cola chewits with samples to convince the family created debate that is due to last all night! It’s all about the fruit salad 😂

A lovely pub. Gary and Lewis were helpful and friendly. The pub looks like it’s been recently updated inside and out. There’s several old school beers on draft like John Smith and some recent additions like Birra Morreti. It’s a nice place to have a meal or just a pint.

Me and family came for a roast and it was 10/10! The staff were very friendly & helpful we will definitely be coming again!

Wait, wait, wait..... I ordered my food over an hour ago. I've just been up to ask where it is. I was told it's a 45 minute wait. Nice. This is over an hour 🙈 Jeeeesus guys, come on. Tell me when I order about the wait don't do this to me!! The hanger is real

Went today for lunch with my brother and daughter. Becca was our server she was brilliant from start to finish she made us feel welcome food was lovely came very quick would highly recommend nice chilled atmosphere which is what you want when you come for some lunch

Food is quite expensive, ordered the hot honey cheese fries and got the smallest bowl of chips, could tell they put them in the microwave to melt the cheese for the price I was expecting more to be honest. Staff were welcoming. Just don't think I'd order food from here again

Well whot a lovely time we had especially on a Sunday as none of our party of 9 didn't have the roast, we all had different meals , waited about a hour ,but all arrived at the same time ,table pre booked and as it was a special birthday, balloons , were put in place a few hours before by family and table was reserved, bar staff pleasant and didn't have to wait , great staff especially the lady that looked after us many thanks.

Thought i found a little gem as i am new to Wallasey, came for a roast, waited over 45mins for our dinner and i could not believe what was served, veg was rock solid not fresh, cauliflower was ice cold and like rubber. The meat was definitely not cut off from a joint, look like it was straight out a packet, so bland no flavour, soooo disappointed and for £25, such a beautiful pub with a great vibe and friendly staff outrageous to serve this is anyone? Shame!

Charming pub out in the burbs. Dog friendly. Quiet and relaxing. Food wasn't to this American's taste, but locals seemed to be enjoying it. Pints were perfect, served with a smile!

Great service, great place and professional friendly staff. Ordered food and it came hot and quick, clean glasses not foggy ones! Clean cluttlery and great range of drinks.

Alway come in on a Sunday, Lindsey is always lovely. Always greets us and makes sure everything is exactly how we ordered. Food is spot on but a place is nothing without great service, and Lindsey is top class!

I come here every Thursday to enjoy the speed quiz ran by Sean! We always have top service from Linzi and always welcomed with the biggest of smiles! Food is always lovely and presented very well!

Was there for a roast dinner at lunchtime down from Edinburgh.. very disappointing with two items missing from the roast which were stated on the menu.. no apologies from the staff member.. meat thick, roasties chewy.. normally I’d have complained but tbh just wanted to leave.. one staff member quite aggressive looking in her demeanour and not a smile.. I’m sure she knows who she is.

I absolutely hate giving poor reviews but I was so so disappointed yesterday with Christmas dinner . The food was really poor especially the main course it tasted like old cookery taste and to be honest the whole table didn’t eat it . We then waited two and a half hours for the pudding which arrived as we put are coats on to leave because the kids had been extremely bored for well over an hour if not more. We did repeatedly ask but got no were and sat with the dishes for those hours . Honestly I love to hype up business and I love the lady who runs the Nelson but I won’t be back for food again and I’m going to cook a second Christmas dinner at home for the family. It’s disappointing when you save to treat the family and it’s organised so poorly. I understand busy but bad food and the waiting along with hours of our table full of plates and glasses just wasn’t worth the expense. Even going to make our own dinner today to make up for it , iv read a lot of people on Facebook had the same experience. No apologies , in fact my review is the only one ignored which is sad after spending 300 pound Still months later no refund or meals as promised iv messaged the pub at least 6 times , as an autistic person I don’t find it comfortable to ring so iv reached out via message again and again and can see they all say read. At this point id like my money back like the other people got and I didn’t absolutely livid still

Update 2024 April My brother and I, and our wives, visit quite regularly for a chat in the week, but if we stray into the late afternoon, the music goes up too loud for further conversation My brother went to the bar and mentioned this and was treated very politely and and indeed the volume was reduced. (The reasonable suggestion that the majority of other customers, including elderly, children etc, like loud music does not coincide with what I have heard from others. Mostly they say it's a great place, but too loud to talk. QED. Previous comments: Nice building, well kept, pleasant staff, reasonable prices, warm, but the type and high volume of the incessant thumping music was not to my taste. I prefer quieter music for an evening for drinking and chatting with friends. I didn't go out to dance.

This place has a lovely atmosphere and feels like a great place for get togethers. Unfortunately we waited for nearly an hour for food, that might have been because it was busy and there didn’t seem to be many staff on. Hopefully, it will be better if I try it again.

I hate to leave a bad review on any establishment but tonight’s meal was awful. I took my parents out for dinner. we haven’t been to the Nelson in a year. Our food took quite some time to come, which we understood as there was a large party in. When our food arrived, my dad’s meal of pie and mash was diabolical. A small spoonful of mash, soggy watery broccoli and a pie filled with fatty off cuts of meat which was inedible. His pint also had black flakes floating in the pint and on the head of the pint. It has completely put us off returning, which is a shame as it is on our doorstep. I do hope it improves. Staff were lovely despite being rushed off their feet, it didn’t feel right to complain when the quality of the food was not in their control.

Could do with a lift for people with walking disabilities.

Poor and limited choice of real ales

My ultimate favourite place to go in Wirral. The Nelly is unbeatable whether I am having a quiet pint alone or taking my family out for a meal. I am very careful where to take the fam' but we always feel safe and comfortable in The Nelson. The management and staff couldn't be friendlier and more attentive. Every meal we've enjoyed there has seen a full house of clean plates when we've finished and the variety of available meals has impressed us all, which is a rare thing. Gary and Lyndsey always make a fuss of us and the staff work so hard yet make us feel special every time. I always recommend The Nelson to my friends and I do to everyone who is looking for a new place to visit. Give them a call and book a table, it's a special place.

Went today for lunch and can Honestly say the food was lovely .. hot and fresh . Been here many times before and always been a bit hit and miss but credit where it’s due , we all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch today .

Really good place, Number 1 pub for sport in Wallasey no question! Went in for the game on Wednesday night and the atmosphere was excellent, good selection of real ale and craft ipa too!

Me my husband and daughter went into this pub Monday night we all had beef and ale pie broccoli mash and gravy and was all sick, when I phoned up to tell them the manager phoned me bac saying nourivus is going round and asking if I had been the doctors 😂

I phoned the pub today and was told the pies weren't made there and that there was 15 or more people that had the same pies that evening and I was the only one that had phoned up also I was asked if I had been the Dr's as there was noravious going round I explained I knew about this going round I was asked what I wanted doing, i was struggling to get a word in as he was talking non stop, I think he needs to take a course in customer service I will not be going into this pub ever again after going there regularly

Great pub for drinks and food. Staff very friendly and welcoming and can’t do enough for you. Also very family friendly so would definitely recommend families and couples to go visit for drinks and food.

Came in early for husband and son to have few games pool before got busy. Family time. Been in few times over Christmas for same reason and was fine. Pool table had no out of order sign on so we had already ordered drinks. When we told lady in charge her attitude was unbelievable. She took ages to come over even though pub was empty. She was on video call to someone in family and clearly couldn’t be bothered. She eventually came over and said yes out of order after doubting us. Walked off and my son asked her for money back. She gave it to him. Few minutes later came and put an out of order sign on table. Not once was there an apology. We basically wasted our money on drinks but no customer service whatsoever. No wonder this pub is so awful. No excuse.

So good! Quiet for January! The food was absolutely gorgeous, couldn’t fault it at all. Everything piping hot and fast service. Lyndsey the manager was so attentive and made us feel so welcome when we came in and couldn’t go above and beyond anymore than she did with the kids, kids loved her! 1st time we have been here 2 had Senior Meals which is good value and one a sandwich all tasty and enough for a lunchtime. Will deffo be back and will recommend it to friends The staff were very attentive

Booked Christmas day lunch. What a disaster. Place was absolutely heaving. Squashed behind our tables starters ok main hit and miss. Some hot some cold three didn't have potatoes plates and glasses left on table for over an hour and a half. Can't comment on pudding as we didn't get it after waiting over an hour we joined the queue in asking for a refund. Staff worked very hard but concentrated on serving everyone at the bar. If they were struggling they should have closed the bar to the general public it was just gread to have so many people
