Munchees in Reading

I always eat at munchies either breakfast or dinner

Chose not to have breakfast at out hotel after spotting this place the day before. Great food and portion size, dated 80s interior and atmosphere that still seems to work. Would visit again if in town.

After 5 days in Reading, I wanted to test out the full English breakfast I've seen so often on British television shows. Since Munchees Cafe was just around the corner from my hotel and advertised All Day Breakfast in its window, I thought that might be a great place to sample this British staple. I was wrong I ordered the full English with scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, baked beans, mushrooms, toast, and french fries. I'm not much of a tomato eater so I asked to have that held off the plate. The scrambled eggs were inedible. They were so bland, and even salt and pepper didn't help. I took a couple of bites and gave up. The sausage was fine although I doubt it would have met the standards spouted on Four in a Bed, the bacon was fine. As an American, British bacon just seems to be ham, but it was fine. The baked beans were overly sweet. Mushrooms came from a can, and the toast was soaked in scrambled egg juice. French fries were fine. In other words, I don't think my introduction to the full English breakfast was a good one. I'll definitely try the breakfast again, but I won't be returning to Munchees. Munchees was the equivalent of an American "greasy spoon" restaurant that seemed fairly dirty and somewhat run-down. I really should have walked in, looked around, and went somewhere else for breakfast.

If in Reading UK, a great place for breakfast... Also, a large coffee, is really a huge mug. So if you enjoy your coffee, they make a venti at Starbucks look like a mini drink.

Absolutely disgusting food sausages wasn’t even cooked cheap bacon what wasn’t even cooked eggs was burnt no1 go to this place it’s absolutely disgusting and too expensive

Found this place by accident and it took me back to the greasy spoon days of old. Absolutely amazing food and service. The decor although dated, really works and reminded me of the good old days. The menu is vast and there is something for everyone, meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans. Would thoroughly recommend!!

Vegan menu is overpriced for what you get, the vegetarian version had more on the plate and was cheaper... the vegan menu needs work. Has a classic diner atmosphere which is refreshing.

The food is great, but way too overpriced. £3.95 for a sandwich is absolutely crazy when I could make several sandwiches just like that for a bit less. Edit: price has increased to 4.25

Interior hasn't changed in almost 20 years and love that food was good. Shame you cannot exchange items like toast for fried bread etc and my friend got an ice tea £3.50 for a bottle of liptons is a joke. He wasn't happy !!

A pretty good "greasy spoon" cafe and very handily located in the centre of Reading. I am surprised that I had never discovered it before, but it is now on my list of places to get a good fry-up

Food turned up without my can of coke, a rasher of bacon missing, hash brown missing and no chips

Great meal. My girlfriend and I had a really lovely time in the morning having a full English breakfast. Nice big menu and you can customise pretty much anything you want even though the sign says you can't but the staff said you can which is a bonus.

Nicely priced choices for good food is definitely always a plus, with the menu covering various options on English Breakfast as well as many other options. If ambient sound is a concern of yours, keep in mind where the speakers are located when choosing your table. It is not deafening, but will definitely impair your conversation capacities.

Food is really affordable and nice. People are nice. However tables are quite small and if you are sitting side by side (being chubby as I am) it makes it a bit harder. A place to come in your Sunday gear and eat comfortably.

It needs a really good clean, tables dirty on arrival, ceiling fans were caked in years of dust, upstairs tables were dirty. Toilet upstairs was dirty, Food was not cooked properly. Jacket potatoes under cooked. Amazing waitress who served us. Needs updating, and a very good clean.

Missing cheese and onion sandwiches

Fantastic little place. Was looking for somewhere for a quick bite to eat and found this place. Ended up having one of the breakfasts. Great pricecquick and great service. Would definitely go back

Absolutely brilliant greasy spoon. Travelled here from Oxford before work just for the legendary sausage sandwich, lovely staff and a great morning atmosphere! would highly recommend. great value too

My vegetarian breakfast is always so good! My friends had normal meals and it was delicious they said !

It has that 80s feel to it, no matter if it's the small seats, the enormous portions or the beans and sausages that have the quality of that time 😂 But that just adds to the appeal and the English Full breakfast for £9-10 quid is worth it. Drinks are separate but then you can choose to get tea, cofee or a milkshake if your stomache can handle all that! It's the most popular place in town for all day breakfast.

This place has it all. Great food, customer service, pricing, options, all of it, you name it.

I never right a review but I ordered food and waited then got a call about not having pancakes so replaced it for scrambled egg but I payed for 2 portions of pancakes for both my children sent one little tub with scramble egg not 2 portions and food come cold and tried ringing them no answer won’t be ordering again

Not a bad find in the centre of reading where English breakfast are few and far between, good menu variety and reasonably priced food with good service and plenty of seating, one bug bear would be price of a mug of tea, at just under 3 quid I skipped it and popped to Mac D for a cuppa when I finished, will be coming back though

Incorrect order arrived. When we called the restaurant they said to order it again but we would need to pay for delivery again. Not helpful. She also hung up on us.

Vegan breakfast £7.95 but no vegan milks or vegan butter so got served up dry toast with no beans or anything to help the dry toast down. Was told not allowed to make substitutes to what the breakfast consists of. Piss poor!!

We sat down to look at menu. Within 5 minutes we were told by 3 different staff to order at the counter. Placed order with a confused looking member of staff. Food came and my order was wrong. Both tables near us also received wrong orders. Food was lower standard cafe quality. We won't return.

If you want a good English breakfast in the town centre then here’s your first port of call. Dry breakfast cooked to perfection. The toasted sandwiches are amazing. Minus one star as you seem to offer chips with breakfast. That is my Welshness talking as we don’t believe that should be in the breakfast 😂!!!

Great traditional cafe. The all-day breakfasts are great, and there is plenty to choose from, or you can create your own. No substitutions allowed, which is fair enough, or would have been 5 stars.

Omelette had a funny taste, unable to finish it.

The food in here is ok and the staff seem to be attentive. Dropped 2 stars because some of the orange seats desperately need cleaning.

The worst cafe I’ve ever eaten in. £14.10 for this. Need I say any more? The people of Reading must be severely deprived of a cafe for this place to have any good reviews. I’d feel guilty feeding those sausages to a dog.

Service was slow and we were the only people in the cafe. They took ages to take our order. I had poached eggs on toast. It was more hard eggs on bread. Not an enjoyable breakfast. My husband had the cooked breakfast which was typical greasy spoon. It was edible.

If I could score zero I would totally messed up order sent hash brown not a hamburger and very rude on the phone

If you like eating while surrounded by fruit flies dropping into your tea and landing on your plate then this is the perfect place.

Ordered a cooked breakfast with chips. Chips was clearly fried in old oil. Food portion was big and quite tasty but a bit greasy. Milkshake not overly sweet but very thin more like milk.

There is no more to say when a 13years old finished everything in his dish, lovely place and tasty food, could be salty to others but for me is ok, only 4 stars due to the fry toast and that could be only thing you need to avoid on the full day breakfast menu, the fry toast has too much oil in it

Wouldn't recommend. Waited 40min since ordering to receive our food. Food was well below mediocre. Drinks were awful and price was expensive for what it was

Popped in for a wee bite to eat, use to come here when I was bunking school in 1985 lol.( that's how long it's been running) a lovely cafe, hasn't changed at all, great service, lovely people, food good for the price, great array of drinks, superb coffee, all at a price which can't be beaten any where in Reading! in the evening upstairs turns into a Nepalese restaurant.. Yummy yum

How this place is still open is beyond me! The food was vile, the whole cafe needs a deep clean it's disgusting. We had order toasties which arrived wrong at first then they came again with the cheese half melted and the whole thing was tasteless, the lettuce was brown and we had ordered orange juice which was warm. Would never return to this place even if they paid me. So many much better cafes dotted all over reading please do not waste you're money and time eating here.

The food was disgraceful..bacon fried bread mushrooms swimming in grease .sausage cheap variety ..chips soft as though they had been left and recooked..£30.65 for 3 meals disgraceful

A really excellent value-for-money place; a Nepalese run traditional English café in the town centre. High recommendation.

Welcoming and busy cafe spread over two floors with a Nepalese twist. They do many variations of your traditional greasy spoon breakfast combinations alongside Nepalese dishes.

Great food and very good service. We both had a quarter pounder burger which was lovely and well priced. But £2.50 for a cup of tea or £2.75 for a mug is just too much. Please look at the costs and rationalise these.

Quaint independent builders caff stuck in the 80s. Food was cold and really bad quality, service was disdainful and don't believe their juices are juices or you'll be paying 3£ for a small glass of basics concentrate. I'd avoid, there are other independent options in the area

Comfortable & nostalgic cafe , polite staff, excellent price. This is the "Balla" breakfast. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Latte was lush, too. Cheese toastie for little one, just right for him!

I came in here with my family. We were seated at a dirty table which I had to ask to be cleaned. When the breakfasts arrived they were over cooked, poorly delivered with cheap poor quality ingredients used. Sausages over cooked, poached eggs rock hard, fried eggs broken, bacon over cooked. Mushrooms were great which really was the only positive. I was also either overcharged or it is really expensive. I did challenge the guy at the checkout but he insisted it was correct but the strange way they do the payment could be easily fiddled. I eat in a lot of cafes and this is one I certainly won’t be eating in again.
