Just got a takeaway and honestly the chicken was inedible. I think cooked & refrozen (and then cooked again). Whatever the cooking process, it’s not good. Weird freezer-burn taste and tough. I’ve been there once before & it was the same. Tried tonight as my couldn’t get to my usual takeaway as the A21 is closed. Was persuaded by some recent good reviews - curry houses have bad nights etc. Food is quite 90’s - sweet packet-derived sauces etc. Don’t mind that too much as takeaway is more about a night off. But the chicken. Guys come on - just cook it fresh. People have taste buds and I think value their health. given we’re in lockdown you can’t rely on a hoard of smashed idiots (me in non-lockdown) falling in to your curry house. Should be one star really. Staff are really nice so feel bad about putting this here. However, I’ll be the first to come back if you start cooking nice meals. You are after all the only curry house in cranbrook. However keep producing crap like I’ve just eaten and you’ll go bust.

Have never experienced such a poor Indian restaurant. The food was served lukewarm and despite mentioning this twice there was no follow up and no apology. Two different dishes were ordered but the sauce seemed to be exactly the same for both, served in an unappetising heap on the plate rather than in individual dishes. A truly bad experience.

What a disgraceful experience. The ambience was dead and buried, much how our chicken tasted. Multiple hairs were found in out food, the poppadoms were stale and chips undercooked. When our food came he said he was closing in 5 minutes so could we eat fast. Do not go here unless ur a fast eater and fast runner to the toilet.

The food was ok however the manager was insistent that I pay £4.40 per pint for 3 pints of soda water and cordial and was trying to tell me that soda was the same as tonic water. I've never been so rudely spoken to and falsely and inaccurately charged for soda water. Disgusting.

After a long day on the road, we had spent far longer than planned at Hampton Court because of a classic car show. Dining options in Cranbrook on a Sunday evening are somewhat limited and having had a look at the hotel opposite's offerings decided on a curry instead. The Mumtaz Mahal seems to have received mixed reviews, which surprised me based on my visit with my brother. Now I believe that the pair of us are somewhat spoiled because on our doorstep is Ocean Rd, South Shields, where there are any number of establishments offering Indian cuisine. The Mumtaz Mahal met and exceeded our expectations - the menu was a delight, service was attentive and cheerful, the Cobra beer was satisfyingly cold and everything from the pickles and papadums, side dishes and main course was very enjoyable. The vegetable rice was just the way I like it and the curry itself had suble flavours, as well as heat. We had lemon sorbet for dessert too - all for a very resonable total. Verdict - very good.

Living in Cranbrook we only have the one indian but this would shut down if there was another! We didn’t book, we arrived around 7pm, not busy at all but was asked to sit in the seating/waiting area by the most miserable man, came over again and asked my partner to SIT! Like he had no choice ! 5+ minutes later showed us to a table where he chucked the menus on the table, part of the evening a lovely girl served us our drinks, papadums and took our order, then when we thought there was hope he came and served our food, we was given very small portions, I asked which curry was which as they looked exactly the same, ohhhh and they tasted exactly the same *tinned tomatoes with 4 chunks of lamb in and the other tinned tomatoes with 4 chunks of chicken in! when I complained and said it was the worst curry I’ve ever had, no care was given and I was given a bill with all the food on refusing to pay for the curries as I refuse to give money to people that rip you off !

It’s the only Indian in Cranbrook and uses it position as the only one in this one horse town to its advantage. Scoring as no1 in the area out of 8 Indian’s though the spread of these restaurants is quite far. Why shocking?? It was over priced and of very poor quality.. I’m from the north east and up there we get value for money and great quality food due to one reason (competition). The mumtaz fails on every aspect!!!! If I lived in Cranbrook I’d obviously never eat an Indian again, it’s that simple. I honestly can’t believe it’s rated no1 (laughable) see my plus 70 honest reviews from around the world but with regards the Mumtaz, simply avoid at all costs!!!!!!!!!!!

Being new to the area we thought we would try a 'local curry house'.We did and we were not disappointed. Fast friendly service coupled with an extensive menu choice were the highlights. There is plenty of room to accommodate larger parties and the atmosphere was pleasant on our visit - just the general hum of conversation and not loud atmospheric music that you cannot speak over which has been our experience in other restaurants. Drink choice was pretty good, be these soft drinks or alcoholic . We asked for a few tweaks to our ordered food and these were done without fuss and were most enjoyable. Decor is fine- a little dated in places but it is clean. We've been back since on several occasions for a takeaway - again all good. So in short, there is nothing negative to report from my experiences of this restaurant to date.

There’s no point beating about the bush... (Unless it is your wife’s of course) When you go out and have a nice meal with your friends, it is as much about the service, the atmosphere and surrounding, the general feeling; as it is about the food. Personally I think they have to go hand in hand for a business to be successful.

Popped in here tonight as our local Indian is currently closed. Service was friendly and efficient. Our son had chicken tikka which he said was fantastic. We ordered 2 curries - the Dhansak was good BUT it just wasn't hot enough in temperature i.e. it came out luke warm. Our other curry was even colder. Wasn't over keen on it being served up in frying pans either! Much prefer the authentic serving dishes. Saying that, the curries were tasty with good spices, nan was good and the Bhindi bahjee was tasty.

This is the first time I've written a review but I just can't let this pass. I visited recently and can honestly say this is the worst meal I've ever eaten, Indian or otherwise. My chicken rogan was simply a piece of chicken cut up and put in tinned tomatoes, no flavour, no spices. The rice was cold and the naan dry. As I was with a group I didn't want to make a fuss but my first visit will be my last. The whole experience was terrible.

This review is overdue. I have eaten here three of four times - largely as it is the only game in town and after a few beers in a local pub one doesn't usually consider driving somewhere else for an indian meal. Anyway . . . I visited this place for the very last time about two weeks ago. We had booked a table for 6 at 9:30pm. To be fair, we were late in arriving and turned up at 9:50pm. I thought we were suitably apologetic for our tardiness but the owner made us feel extremely unwelcome and that our arrival in his restaurant was a significant inconvenience. I should also point out that this was also a Friday night and yet we were the only people in the restaurant - other locals clearly know better that we did at the time!Anyway, following the indignant attitude of the owner, I told him we would go elsewhere. Others in my crowd were more accommodating and we finally took a table against my better judgement. I wish we hadn't. To start, the meal was served by the surly owner and I personally felt really unwelcome. The food itself was also only just passable but it is far from the best indian meal I have eaten. In fact, we had to ask which was the shashlik and which was the bhuna as the two dishes were actually indistinguishable from each other on the plate! I could go on for quite a lot longer but I hope this has given you a good picture. My advice, even if you are really really hungry and you find yourself in Cranbrook late one night, give this place the widest berth you can and do not succumb to eat there under any circumstances.

Last Saturday we decided to try a new restaurant for a take-away and I must say the telephone manner and service were excellent, the lady taking the order was kind enough to mention that we would need to pay cash as the card terminal was not working properly. We ordered a Chicken Tikka Massala and a Chicken Dopiaza as usually they are the dishes we then base future choices on. Sides of Bombay Aloo and Sag Paneer. Everything was lovely apart from the fact that my TM was more of a Passanda (and I can't cope with that much coconut) and the Dopiaza had probably a whole onion and very limited Chicken. That aside it was a nice enough meal - but distinctly average. There did seem to be soooooo much to choose from on the menu that I can't believe they need that many choices and should perhaps go minimal for appeal?

My parents live in Cranbrook and we went for a meal here with them last year, the food was nice and service fine then, so when my husband and I were house-sitting for them over the weekend, we decided to go there again. We had a couple of drinks in the pub first and arrived at the restaurant at 9.40, the place was completely deserted (quite a shock to see on a Friday night!!) we asked if it was too late to eat and the old fella said no we could sit down, he took our drinks orders and gave us the menu, when he came back with the drinks he told us the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes so could we hurry up, I've never heard of a curry house closing so early but we thought fair enough, so we gave our choices and in the meantime ordered 4 Poppadums, we hadn't even finished those when not 10 minutes later he told us our meal was ready, now I dont know about you but when we're told that 2 rice dishes, 2 main chicken dishes, a portion of onion bhaji and 2 breads are cooked in such a short space of time, alarm bells start ringing. My husband's Chicken tikka looked anemic, not the nice red colour is usually is and both of our meals had already been dished up on the plate, they didn't come in separate bowls like you would expect, he took one bite and said it was awful, luke warm and totally bland, his garlic naan was just plain bread with a few garlic bits chucked on top, we asked the waitress to take it back and inquired as to why it hadn't been delivered on a sizzling plate as it normally is, to which she replied "we dont do that anymore because of health & safety" this is rubbish as my dad has since told me they do still serve up dishes that way. Anyway she was very polite and took the dish away, i then proceed to tuck into my meal, when i had to spit the chicken out too, it was rubbery and old like it had been sitting there all day waiting to be used, i called the waitress back over and told her that we would just cut our losses and leave, the food clearly wasn't up to scratch and they just wanted us out the door so they could go home. The main guy came over and argued a little but soon agreed that we should just pay for our drinks and Poppadums and leave. Such a shame, I've literally never had to leave a restaurant because the food has been that bad, the waitress was very polite and nice enough but unfortunately that has sealed it for me, we shan't be returning.

Not a lover of spicy food, I've not eaten in an Indian Restaurant in some 30 years and was very apprehensive - and then bowled over by the delicious food - Lamb Tikka Tandoori with really good meat, well prepared, and with superb sauce, extra special rice and little salad yummy too. Selected a very mild King Prawn Pasanda for my wife, again perfect, plus good Sag Aloo. All the flavours were excellent. This was a welcome treat - to be repeated. And that was only a take-away. Two portions of special rice left one over - used to accompany a fish supper the next day, so good value too. The menu is accurate about the strength of the dishes (confirm on the web if you too are an uncertain beginner). Thanks!

The Buttered Chicken and the Chicken Korma looked almost Identical, the Onion bhajis are very big, they look great, but very hard to cut into, because of them being so dry. We came as a family group post christmas, so the restaurant was unsuprisingly quiet. After the excesses of christmas, we decided to have just a main course preceded by poppadums and chutney. The lime pickle started well at the top of the dish, but was rancid underneath the top layer, suspect it had just been topped up with fresh. The main meals arrived in good time, with our order taken by a very helpful and attentive young lady. The main courses were of mixed quality, some being very tasty, others bland, whilst the rice had been reheated on more than one occasion and was a very small portion. My real gripe tho was the owner who obviously decided he wanted to go home and started to remove our plates the moment we put down our forks, never minding there was still food on the table. Shame, as we had mostly enjoyed the meal, but felt definately rushed. This was particularly annoying as we arrived an hour earlier than booked on the off chance we could eat early (which we obviously did). Fairly expensive for the quality and quantity of food.

Although the female staff were polite... Service was not that great. Food was awful, tasteless and bland. Will never return. WARNING... GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! Can only imagine the positive comments are from the staff themselves or very drunk customers?!?

Having moved to the area we were delighted to see an Indian restaurant on Cranbrook High Street. However, this delight did not last very long. My husband and I ordered two very different meals but when they arrived we couldn't distinguish them from each other. They were simply a big brown slushy plate of spiced onions. What a disappointment! We have never been back and I am completely amazed people actually eat there.

We ordered a take away, 2 chicken tikka masala, Rice, garlic and coriander Naan, well the Naan was just a plain one with coriander and garlic thrown on the top not cooked in with the naan which shows it wasnt freshly cooked, the tikka masala was more like carrot soup with a very grainy texture and tasteless! Rice was part cooked. SERIOUSLY DISAPPOINTING, YUCK

Food in here is stuck in the 1980's, presentation and taste very lacking I would expect an indian in what appears to be a pretty affluent little town to be alot better to please the locals but was left dissapointed. The waiter seemed pretty put out to have to serve me food and drink, I probably wont bother him again.

Very conveniently, the restaurant is situated 5 minutes' walk away from home. We always get our Indian takeaways from here, which is at least once a month, and when we have eaten in the restaurant it has been just a good. Delicious food, expansive menu, and nice people.

Reading the previous reviews, the only thing that can come to mind is the reviews were written from the staff. Service was appalling, miserable waiters and waitress'. Food was defiantly below average, could have cooked up something better without any hands. The Coca-Cola was warm and flat. The overall experience was like witnessing a chimpanzee in labour.

Went into this restaurant really craving Indian as we hadn't had any in a while. My older son was over from America and was really wanting a good spicy curry. Walked in to find one French family already seated. Other than that, the restaurant was empty. When we asked if we could sit by the window, we were told that it would be too crowded. That was warning sign number one. But being the polite people that my in-laws are, we stayed. I personally would have walked out. We sit down and they proceed to take our order. We order all our food then we told them we wanted the samosas out first. The waiter tells me "I will bring it all out at once". I then firmly tell him "No, you will bring out the samosas first". He brings out the samosas and I ask if I may have some mint chutney to go with the samosas. He points at some yellow concoction and tells me that is it. I then tell him that it is not the same thing. Warning sign number two. Then he comes out and tells my older son that they haven't got any naan bread. I have never been to an Indian place that does not have naan bread. I almost wanted to ask them if they wanted me to pop over to the shop and get some for them. Warning sign number three. We have our meal and it was ok. Just that, ok. The tandoori chicken was tasty but the veggie curry that came with it was bland. I am positive it came out of a tin. We didn't even finish it. After our meal, my mother in law asked if we could take it away and asked for a takeaway only to be told that we had to pay for the containers. Ok fair enough. She made some comment under her breath that they don't charge for containers in America when the waiter snapped at her and said "This isn't America, this is England". Now, I wouldn't have been so bothered by that comment had the person saying it actually was able to SPEAK English properly. My mother in law then tried to make light of the situation by telling the waiter they lived in Cranbrook to which the reply was "I don't care".For 75 quid for 4 adults and 1 child, this restaurant is overpriced. To be honest, it is not even authentic Indian cuisine. No daal on the menu? No naan bread?Mahal means expensive in some languages. That is pretty accurate for such a poor excuse of a restaurant.

Overall good food and reasonable prices. The décor is a little dated, but it is very convenient for the town, and good for takeaways

My wife and I booked a table at this restaurant because we love Indian food. When we arrived the staff welcomed us in a very friendly way and accompanied us immediately to our table. The service was excellent and overall the food was very good. We spent a pleasant evening there and we appreciated some real Indian food.

Though tucked away in small quaint English village, the restaurant offers a wide variety of Indian dishes, suitable for any palate. You can choose from mild to very spicy, and beware - when they say spicy, they mean it! Portions are good, but the best part is probably that dishes not on the menu can be made upon request. The staff is very, very eager to help you, but make use of this while choosing your dish.

The Mumtaz is a friendly place, a nice atmosphere. If you book in advance Ali will arrange a special dish. We took our Canadian friend in there last night . I love the lamb tika buna, he does it dry for me with extra cinnamon. Just how I like it!I run a local B&B and my customers always give me excellent feed back. That's why we recommend!

Nice food, good fast service, would defo' go again, only slight downside was that it felt a bit like they were rsuhing us, but it was a Friday night, booked at the last minute. We were finished within 90 mins of arrival which meant we had to retire to local pub for rest of evening....shame :-)

Poppadoms and dips very tasty, reasonably priced house wine - looking good. Ordered main courses - neither had the greatest of flavours. Did tell the waiter when he came to check and was offered an alternative-still no great shakes on the flavour front - didn't eat. Poor value for money, as the food was without any depth of flavour.

UPDATE: This is not Royal Spice anymore, we ordered take away from this place now called Spice Fusion and has nothing to do with Royal Spice standards, unfortunately we are not ordering from this place anymore. Absolutely delicious food! The chicken tikka balti is phenomenal with lots of fresh coriander. This is my go to in Tunbridge Wells when I want a curry.

Authentic Indian restaurant well rounded to 5 stars in all areas. Very tasty, very friendly! Always busy. Fresh made food, brilliant cocktails and not over priced either! Absolutely gorgeous

The food is excellent and the service efficient. The decor is awful though and no atmosphere whatsoever. Was empty by 9pm Saturday night. The toilets are awful. Haven’t been updated in two decades. Mouldy, cold, peeling paint. This place would do so much better with a face lift
