Stayed for 2 nights in August 2024 with my wife. Bedrooms were nicely done , comfortable bed and nice shower room. Bar and restaurant are dated and could do with a revamp. Staff friendly and helpful and cleaning staff very good but generally short staffed all over. Restaurant food was basic pub food of average quality, ours was ok but we saw a few people complaining about time taken and quality. For the price I recommend eating at the white hart 2 miles away which was excellent in all departments and slightly cheaper!

We stopped by here on our first night staying at Pautons Campsite opposite. We sat in the garden so that our young children could run around and not disturb anyone. Then garden area is quite spacious and well tended. The service from the staff was friendly and extremely helpful. The food was good and there was a good selection of beers to choose from. Would happily go back

After frequently visiting The Mortimers over the last 30+ years I was very disappointed when my wife and I called in for a lunch time snack today (27th August 2024) We chose to eat in the restaurant area. Arriving and looking upwards ! The state of the decoration I thought needed to be improved (the celling paper bulging and ready to fall down) Not very inviting for a “restaurant area.” Ordered drinks and placed an order for food. Leak and potato soup and a small Ham & eggs. The soup was more like “pea soup” dark green and really inedible. The Ham appeared old and dry and once again not very appetising. Both plates were left and a complaint was made to the bartender. Response was “I will tell the chef.” I would not recommend The Mortimers to those visiting the Romsey area; and I will not be returning again.

Very close to Paulton Park, and probably fine for a drink at the bar - but would avoid for food and accommodation. Items on the evening menu was sold out by 7pm. The adult bed was old and uncomfortable. The children beds were dreadful thin camp beds - see other reviews too on this point: avoid. The room (3) was dusty - - grubby stained carpets and walls: see photos. The lady serving breakfast openly slagged off the children who had recently departed for "wasting their food" for all to hear, and then when the cook came into the dinning room to tell her he couldn't make scrambled egg because they were out of double cream (which was odd) she scolded him publicly, saying "English people put WATER* in scrabbled eggs, not double cream!". *Please see BBC guide on how to make scrabble eggs - and again avoid their's. https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/how_to_make_scrambled_93136 Way over priced for what is a 2 star establishment - I wouldn't ever want to go back, and am baffled by the reviews that suggest the food and accommodation is good!?!?!

Dusty room, smelly hallway, reheated food a big disappointment at dinner, rude waitress at breakfast - polite to guests when speaking to them, but openly slagging them off once they’d left the breakfast room and rude to the chef. Uncomfortable beds, particularly the awful quality camp beds put out for the children, but also the double mattress was clearly very old and worn. Overpriced

The place is overall in the perfect location for Paultons park. The rooms look modern upfront but ours had a lot of damage. My 6yo was on a camper bed that bent severely in the middle which made him move into our bed very quickly. I looked at the bed and it was a thin mattress topper on a metal frame that just bowed. The service was great apart from one exception. I would use it again but I would maybe make changes to my booking. Also I love dogs, but don’t think they should be around at dinner/breakfast. (And yes, I do own a dog) just my opinion.

I visited the cozy little pub for breakfast during my trip to Paultons Park. It's a decent place with reasonably priced food. The pub is a great spot to enjoy an evening with friends. We stayed 2 nights in April 2024. The rooms are quite pleasant with tea and coffee making equipment they are clean and tidy but in need of some tlc. On our first night the noise from the boiler in the next room was so loud we had to ask to move to an alternative room which the staff did without question. The welcome we got on arrival was very pleasant although the staff the second day were far less amenable. We ate in the hotel on both nights and the food was good albeit on the second night we had to sit in the public bar to eat as one of the 3 rooms in the restaurant was being used for a function the other rooms in the restaurant were available so we didnt understand the logic in having guests eat in the public bar. Generaly the bar area is in need of a major refurbishment as it felt very tired.

I ate here as part of a coach party that stopped for a Sunday Roast. Being vegan I wasn’t expecting much and I was right. I was given an almost tasteless cauliflower and sweet potato curry and plain rice and a poppadom that was at least 1/4 uncooked. If I was a chef I’d be ashamed to serve it. I didn’t complain as, you know”It’s that weird vegan complaining again” . I just wish I’d taken a photo. I’ve had much better curries from Aldi. Still, the wine was good.

I came in for the toilet and i asked an employee where the toilets were and they very nicely explained it but just as i got to a turning, i had gotten a little confused so i turned to an older woman and asked her if the toilets were to the left and she proceeded to say yes they were. So as i went through the hall i could very clearly hear her say to her employee how she just had to tell “someone” where the customers were and poked fun as if i was an idiot. There was no trying to keep it quiet at all. Very unprofessional.

Their website featured a £12.00 lunch special menu which sounded promising. Unfortunately after buying drinks we were told it finished yesterday for the summer. Settled on just a starter and choose a sharing seafood platter for 2. That and a side order of fries totalled £19.98. They should be embarrassed to serve a platter that comprised of 4 small prawns, 6 small whitebait and 4 small pieces of tasteless calamari. A poor portion for one. On a positive, the fries were nice and the bar staff friendly and welcoming.

Really gone downhill. We always come here for dinner after a day at Paulton’s Park. The first time we went the service was fabulous, the lady attending to our table even brought me a pint glass of water when she was I breastfeeding our baby. It was a cosy, warm and friendly pub. We’ve always gone back as it’s such a perfect location for Paulton’s Park, and the food has always been good. However we went back yesterday and despite being the only ones in there (there seemed to be an event going on in a room next door), the service was weird, and very poor. We felt in the way and like we weren’t really wanted there. Their wood fired pizzas have also been taken off the menu which is a shame. The food is still good but the atmosphere was strange, we were left to our own devices and we had packed up and put our kids pyjamas on before our table had even been cleared from our mains. It’s not like they were run off their feet! My husband asked for a double espresso to be met with a ‘couldn’t care less’ response of: ‘my coffee machine doesn’t do double espresso. Only instant coffee.’ On the way out I saw their coffee machine which very clearly did have an espresso option. The server did apologise for not attending to our table more but all in all it was just a very odd dining experience which is the complete opposite to what we’ve experienced before here. I think we’ll be finding somewhere else for dinner on our next trip to Paulson’s Park!

Went here for a meal with my partner and toddler. We ordered promptly and subsequently waited close to an hour for food at a time the pub was empty apart from one other table (who were already eating). We were told they'd forgot to put our order through and that it would be a couple more minutes before our food arrived. When it arrived, I cut open the fish (for my toddler) to find it cold and uncooked in the middle. I was delighted I checked it before I let him take a bite. I immediately let the staff member know who just about grumbled an apology. By this point I had a miserable and starving 2 year old and I'd had enough so we left. The girl behind the bar was friendly and brought crayons over for the toddler. This was the only positive. We left without even taking a bit of food. The food served was not safe and would recommend not visiting this place. To say it is so close to Paultons Park it was absolutely dead around closing time when you would think that families would be looking for a quick bite before travelling home. I can see now why it was empty.

The booking ap was easy to use and the team emailed me to make sure the reservation was correct and to review allergies and any other needs. We arrived and the staff were very welcoming and helpful. The food was served in good time and was delicious. I would recommend all the dishes we had (we all chose something different and we chose Pork in mustard sauce with pear and red cabbage, trio of venison sausages, lamb tagine, and steak and ale pie - its a real pie not a filling in a dish with a lid btw). We also had dessert - sticky toffee pudding was awesome, so was the brownie, pineapple crumble. We will definitely be going back - and the cost is reasonable for the amount of food and quality of food too.

Went here as a convenient (just off the motorway) place for a working dinner.Atmosphere good, friendly. Everything is clean and in order.Food choice is very good. Particularly for Carnivores, although veggies seem well catered for as well. Great Steak, Incredible Burger and all the sides well cooked.Despite it being bustling (Paulton's park chucking out time), the service was busy but still good. The staff Pat, Sarah and Neve, were all efficient, polite and engaging. Not the cheapest but quality costs.Go again - YESRecommend to a friend - YES

I moved to the area few months ago and was recommended the Mortimer Arms for some where to go for a lovely drink and great food. Well where do I start I was not mistaken soon as we walked in we were treated like royalty and the atmosphere was great. The staff were happy and laughing and the lady that served us was good she made us feel like we been coming for months in the year this world gone thought going out for food made it worth it with the serve we got .. I want to thank the Sarah, Katrina for the great laughs ... I ordered a steak and my wife had mussels and just say cooked great .. will be coming again and bringing more people .. so thank you !

Roast chicken was indifferent, thin gravy, overcooked Yorkshire, raw broccoli. Other meals seemed better - teenagers happy with burgers but portions were small. Very slow service. Charged for a pint of beer when only had a half. Complained about raw broccoli to be told it was deliberately al denote. No discount offered only an offer to have the broccoli taken away and cooked more! Very slow service. Pub was empty at 7pm but had to go find staff for bill. 4 teenagers had puddings which looked good but expensive. Overall disappointing and overpriced for an indifferent meal and poor service.

Had a three night stay with the family. We will definitely be going again it's ideal location for everything you would want to do with the family the staff are very friendly and the bar and restaurant serve excellent food and drinks. We had a family room that was clean and comfortable with everything you would need for a break away. Overall when we visit the new forest again this will be are base. It's location to paultons park is also an added bonus.

Having stayed near by we have visited the Mortimer twice this week for dinner. Both times food has been excellent. Staff are so friendly and welcoming, even with a slightly grumpy toddler who had a melt down we weren’t made to feel uncomfortable unlike in some other places. Would highly recommend for brilliant food and service.

What can we say, suffice that the Mortimer has always been a favourite of ours, but our day here yesterday with overnight stay has probably been our best. The new staff that are employed here are such a great crew and so welcoming. There is a real sense of commaradary between them too. We are loving the new menu!!!!! Specifically to be able to order a fillet steak, and one of such quality. The whole meal, along with breakfast, was 110%. Our usual room, room 10, was excellent as always, but now with the added bonus of a welcome dog pack. What a lovely idea. Keep up your standards Mortimer crew, you are the best! Thankyou all

Booked online and managed to get a table for two. Nice dining area and the food was great, really good steak with lots of choice for sides. Pudding was fantastic too. Only not giving a 5 as service dropped off towards the end.

I love this place and always have a great meal along with the wine and friendly service, but tonight was just on another level! Me and my sister took a last minute trip and we both ordered the chicken curry as it’s something different. It was so delicious and presented so well. I enjoyed every last mouthful. The cheesecake was also wonderful! The melbec is also delicious! Highly recommend, lovely place and the staff are great! Picture of our curry and cheesecake (half eaten mind you) Yum!

After a morning in Paultons Park where the heavens opened and left us a little wet and cold, we stubbled into the Mortimer Arms and were greet with a warm hello, seated quickly and had drinks ready to scan through the menu.We chose carefully, looking for some heart warming, home cooked foods to take the chill away... we settled on, the home made scotch egg (cooked), camembert and beef stew for main... all were simple delightful!! And really hit the spot!We would wholeheartedly recommend you pay a visit when you get the chance.

Room nice and large but quite chilly. But, the staff resolved that issue swiftly ! Our evening meal of starter sea food basket, whitebait and scampi was delicious then roast Turkey Christmas dinner was superb. Extremely good and pleasant service under the Covid rules !!After a good nights sleep the extremely good full English breakfast kept us full all day for our visit to Peppa Pig World a two minute drive away. Would revisit hotel and recommend. Loads of free parking as well.

We recently dined at The Mortimer Arms Restaurant, Ower and were totally impressed with the high standard of food topped with impeccable service and friendly staff. The varied menu was extensive, offering an array of delicious meals, the only problem was....what to choose! We were all delighted with our choices, which included The 'Dirty Burger' a mouth-watering and exquisite tower of double pulled pork burgers with Jalapeño poppers , Traditional Ham, egg and chips and melt in the mouth lambs liver with velvet mash and seasonal veg. The fire was lit, the Christmas decorations glistened, what more could we ask for.............extra special gins made by the lovely Sandy, definitely the best 'Gin Maker' in the area. So thank you to Fran, Sandy and the team for making a very special, Covid Safe evening for all of us...Well Done!
