Middle Ruddings Country Inn & Restaurant in Allerdale

2nd time to visit this hotel and both times have been absulutley amazing. We can not compliment the staff enough for making us feel welcome. They certainly went above and beyond to make our stay amazing. It's a very beautiful place with the most stunning views. Our rooms both times have been fabulous with very comfortable beds. The food has been outstanding and presented beautifully, we've had both evening meals and breakfast. The chefs do an amazing job. The quality of the produce is 2nd to none. Thank you to all the team for our amazing stay. We can't wait to visit again xxx

We stayed B&B for a long weekend over Easter as a family of 4 in a dog friendly family room (super king double and good sturdy double sofa bed for the kids - 9 & 11) plus our dog. We loved everything about The Ruddings! Firstly it’s absolutely impeccable, clean, fresh, the decor is beautiful and stylish, and it’s really spacious. Being dog friendly was a massive plus for us - doggy sausages provided when we ate, fuss and attention, blankets to sit up on the (beautiful) sofas for the more spoilt. (For those who are not so pup-orientated, the restaurant is split so there is a non-animal side too!) The staff were all exceptionally friendly, interested and helpful, nothing was too much to ask, they’re an absolute credit to you. The attention to detail made it for me - black out curtains, very comfy beds & pillows, soft shut drawers, EV charging points in the car park, a tray to put your shoes in when you get into your room (lovely clean light cream carpets); coffee, tea, biscuits, hot choc etc in the room (& renewed daily), beds made every day, big screen tv, spacious bathroom- just perfect! The food was also excellent in the onsite restaurant - fresh, good choice and well made to order. Def recommend booking the restaurant in the evening as it does get busy. 100% recommend!

Very nicely renovated, very friendly staff who are warm and welcoming, stayed 1 night on the way to Bowness for an event so had to miss breakfast as we left early , room was warm and comfy though slight issue with height of the mirror as it was too high to be useful. Really nice atmosphere , not over fussy, walkers and dogs very welcome.

Had a lovely one night stay last night. Just what we needed. Friendly and welcoming staff when we arrived and couldn't be more helpful throughout ourbstay The decor inside the hotel is superb The food was delicious but I thought both the food and drink was quite pricey. But considering the ambience and surroundings I suppose its fair. What a great find. Will be back!

We last stayed here a couple of years ago before renovation. The food and staff were lovely then but the rooms were a bit tired. What a transformation. The decor is now tasteful and the whole hotel is beautiful. The food is as good as ever and the hotel represents excellent value. Even better it is still very dog friendly with a dog shower and towels and even dog treats on the table at dinner. Well done all involved we will be back soon.

We’d visited’Middle Ruddings’-as it used to be known-many times in the past for dinner and always enjoyed it. This was our first time back since it has been refurbished. It has been beautifully renovated and is now modern, elegant but also homely. The dining room is lovely with an amazing stylish log burner. The bar area for diners with dogs is also very nice. The food is definitely a notch up on before and there is plenty of choice. We chose a traditional steak pie- which was served with a good selection of well cooked veg and mash and I opted for the smoked haddock risotto with peas, asparagus and a crispy soft poached egg. Both meals were totally delicious and they were hearty portions-especially the pie. As stomach space was now minimal, we both had sorbet for pud. Wonderful flavours of citrus, raspberry & rhubarb. Lovely dinner in a relaxed space with friendly attentive staff. It was worth the wait.

We popped in for a beer after a day on the hills. Good selection of drinks. Friendly staff. Nice lounge area to relax. Restaurant area looked very elegant and inviting! Menu looks lovely. We will be coming back to stay 🥰 xx

Stayed for two nights in a great room, restaurant is beautiful and the food is top notch, as is the breakfast on I cannot recommend this place enough.

We ate here twice during our 4 night stay in Keswick as we were very impressed with the quality of food, good vegan choices and very welcoming staff. We were very appreciative that our dog could join us in the bar while we ate. Our meals included Sunday Lunch, burgers, fish and chips, vegan meals, pie and a selection of desserts. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals.

Stunning hotel We stayed here for two nights and can’t praise this hotel and the staff enough. The hotel is beautifully decorated and furnished with high quality furniture throughout. Our room was exceptionally clean and comfortable and was perfect for the two of us. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was exquisite. We haven’t had such a good dining experience in a while . Everything was cooked to perfection and so flavourful. I definitely recommend eating here. Breakfast was also extremely good with a good choice of hot breakfast options and fresh fruits and cereals. We had the full English breakfast and the eggs Benedict and both were delicious with good quality ingredients and very well presented. The view from the front of the hotel and restaurant were beautiful and although we loved our room, I would ask for a room at the front of the hotel next time so we can enjoy those views from our room too. All in all- an excellent experience with great service from friendly and welcoming staff.

Beautiful hotel, really nicely renovated, everywhere is fresh, neat and clean. Our room was lovely, really nicely decorated, bathroom was spotless. The bed was really comfy. The curtains kept the light out really well. We took our dog and he was made so welcome. Our meals (breakfast and evening meals) were delicious. The staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Braithwaite village is nice and we did some lovely walks straight from the hotel. We absolutely couldn't fault the hotel and will definitely be back.

We booked two superior rooms for two couples. It was my wife's 70th birthday treat and what a treat it was. I cannot fault this beautiful hotel. The staff were so welcoming and friendly, they couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast was excellent as were the evening meals, beautiful cuisine. Everything on the menu was delicious but above all, the chef made my wife's birthday cake for her and not just a sponge cake, he made her a lovely fruit cake which they bought in, singing happy birthday. I can highly recommend Ruddings and we shall certainly be returning. Thank you guys, you are wonderful people, good luck for the future and I hope all your problems are little ones. We visited Thornthwaite and went to the restuarant at Middle Ruddings on 2 occasions during our stay. It is a very warm friendly place and the food was very good and the service excellent.

Booked it a couple of weeks before we went. £174 for two nights bed and breakfast. It's about a 4 minute drive out of Keswick on the main road with ample parking! We arrived around 6pm on the Saturday evening and the building is quite impressive from the outside and very cosy and welcoming on the inside. We were greeted by a friendly young girl who told us everything we needed to know and sent us to the room. We had Room 1 which is a small double room with private bathroom, small, but opening window to the side of the hotel, but you can see the mountains if you poke your head out. Lovely cosy room in dark red with nice furniture, tv and lots of tea and coffee,etc. We drove into Keswick for a couple of hours, then returned to have a meal at 8pm. We ordered tempura vegetables and toast with pate for starters, then two sirloin steaks with pepper sauce for main, with a bottle of red wine. (Total £82)The lady who served us was lovely and it was a friendly and efficient service. The wine came immediately and the food not long after. We thoroughly enjoyed it. In the morning, we came down for breakfast and again a great service from the same lady who served us in the evening. A range of cereals, juices and cooked breakfasts available, nothing is too much trouble. The staff are all really friendly and helpful throughout. The chambermaids gave us extra milk, etc as we had asked them not to clean the room due to the current situation, we were fine. There was plenty of parking spaces each time we returned and again a warm welcome. There is lots to do in the local area with Keswick, Castle Rigg Stone Circle is only 4 miles away, walks, Keswick town had a market on the Saturday too. We would definitely recommend it.

Durante una visita reciente a Braithwaite, cenamos en este restaurante. Ambos habíamos estado antes hace unos cuatro años. Llegamos un poco temprano, pero nos acomodaron rápidamente. Comemos aquí cada vez que estamos en los lagos; siempre es una experiencia peculiar y siempre disfrutamos de la comida. El personal es muy de su propia gente y lo conoce a un nivel, lo que puede ser muy refrescante, aunque puede requerir algunos ajustes si acaba de venir de un estilo estadounidense más moderno, 'el cliente siempre tiene la razón, incluso cuando' no son experiencias. La decoración estaba muy bien, mi madre la adora, pero no se ha hecho en algunas décadas. Lo que produce la cocina puede ser exquisito: pasteles tiernos y sabrosos llenos de carne, los filetes de eglefino más frescos, pudines clásicos. Es una institución para nosotros, ¡en el buen sentido!

Tuve una estancia bastante buena. La decoración es un poco anticuada, pero la habitación estaba limpia y las vistas son muy bonitas. Pedí el salmón del restaurante y lo sirvieron con una flor encima. Tenía un sabor extraño, así que sospecho que no estaba fresco, pero me quedé callado. El desayuno que tomé a la mañana siguiente era una muy buena ensalada de frutas y eglefino ahumado con un huevo escalfado que era excelente. Tengo la sensación de que algunos miembros del personal del restaurante no son muy entusiastas ni experimentados y podrían sonreír más, pero en general no fue una mala experiencia. El propietario fue muy servicial al hablar conmigo sobre el transporte local.

Alojarse localmente en el pueblo durante una semana y esta fue la peor experiencia gastronómica de nuestra estancia. No puedo entender cómo este recibe la misma calificación que otro local que fue muy superior. ¡El lugar carecía de encanto, decoración extraña con un invernadero rojo sangre! Quizás la cálida bienvenida que han mencionado otros críticos se ha visto seriamente afectada por las restricciones posteriores al cierre. El lugar se sentía sucio y el servicio no era genial. La comida era razonablemente sabrosa, las porciones demasiado grandes y la comida un poco pesada y seca para nuestro gusto, nuevamente, lo menos bueno que hemos tenido en el área. En el lado positivo, el pub tiene unas vistas fantásticas y admite perros, una visita obligada para nosotros durante las vacaciones. Este lugar podría ser mucho mejor, simplemente no cumpliendo su potencial en este momento.

Perhaps it’s due to social distancing but there seemed to be a lack of atmosphere, and more importantly a lack of choice from an already reduced menu. We sat down around 7.30pm and only when we tried to order were advised that 2 of the dishes were unavailable.Portion sizes seemed unnecessarily large but they do offer a ‘smaller appetites’ option on some of the dishes. We ordered one regular and one smaller main course, and repeated this to the waiter to make it clear what we wanted.When the mains came out we were shocked how large the ‘smaller appetites’ dish was and thought if that’s the small one, how big is the large one? The food was nice but just too much to finish, when we got the bill we realised we’d received and been charged for the large main. I mentioned this to the waiter, and said I think they have made a mistake, and fully expected a response along the lines of ‘apologies our mistake, we’ll just charge you for the small meal’.Instead the chef had come out and his response was ‘I only cooked what I was asked to, and you’ve eaten it’. After some unnecessary and slightly awkward dialogue they knocked a couple of pounds off the bill. The price really wasn’t the issue here, but the level of customer service was poor.Nice food, shame about the service.

Do not go here! As you’ll see from my other reviews I’ve never given a terrible before but this is WORSE than terrible! We arrived and there’s no social distancing of tables, we were seated and noticed all the cutlery was dirty with some old food stuck on it (we decided not to say anything till the food arrived). The waitress threw the paper menu down and then 35 minutes later. (35 despite not being busy!) We asked if we could order and were then told 90% of the menu is gone so we now have a choice of two dishes. We politely said we had to go as I couldn’t eat either and the waiter seemed relived to not have to bother taking an order. As we left we saw more dirty cutlery on tables so it wasn’t just ours. It probably was a blessing in disguise we didn’t eat there. The local trading standards really need to intervene before someone gets seriously ill at this hotel

Visited for supper just as lockdown was easing.Staff were friendly and the atmosphere relaxed.The decor is slightly tired but it was clean and comfortable.The menu has a good selection of pub food. I had a decent homemade burger with freshly made chips and a good coleslaw. The others had the venison curry, which they enjoyed and came with a tasty chappatti, poppadom and a fiery homemade chutney.The cheeseboard had a good selection but the cheese was slightly cold. The sticky toffee pudding was very rich! They have some good ice creams, including apple crumble and raspberry pavlova.Would visit again if in the area for a good value for money pub meal.

Not overly populated in January, but at least we weren’t the only diners! A varied menu, not all the standard pub type dishes, well cooked and presented. An enjoyable evening, but we just felt that something was lacking overall.

Had an Evening Meal and Sunday Lunch during our recent visit to the Lakes. Gluten Free is understood and provided with ease.Highly recommended.

The fourth time we’ve stayed here on our annual trip to the Lakes and as always, it’s perfect. The warm welcome on arrival, the great selection of real ales and wines, the generous helpings at dinner and breakfast and the friendly service all contribute to a very enjoyable stay. Yes, it’s a little tired, but it’s clean, the beds are comfortable and there’s plenty of hot water. Highly recommended.

We drank and dined here when staying overnight after walking from Rosthwaite on day 2 of the Inn Way. They offer a great range of varied real ales and the food in the restaurant was very good too.

The food is adequate though marred by the lack of cleanliness, other than that. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! The place is a disgrace. The room we were allocated had black mould in the corners and water marks all over the ceiling paper which was peeling off. {See photo's} The furniture, more especially the beds need to be replaced. The bathroom was in a disgusting state. The room was not fit for purpose so we cut short our stay. The owner claims his establishment is inspected annually, maybe the inspectors need to check out what happens on the other 364 days. Worse still, the proprietor had our card details. When we arrived home we realised he had taken it upon himself to fleece our card taking full payment for a stay we had not completed, therefore, monies that he was not entitled to. We contacted him, he was rude and refused to give us the money back that he had taken without our consent! A truly dreadful experience. We repeat, AVOID!

Excellent varied menu, dog friendly and good selection of real ales on the bar. I had the stumpie pie which was superb, hubbie had a dressed crab served with a range of salad accompaniments. Fully recommended

We had booked in here for an evening meal earlier in the day, when on a wet walk, we called in for coffee and cake. The home made cake was just excellent, so booking a table for that evening seemed a good idea.That evening, on arrival we had drinks at the bar, and somewhat slowly, shown to our table.The waiter seemed distracted. He needed our name when he took our food order, which is a tad unusual, and then when I gave it to him he started a strange tale of somebody he once knew by the same name who was both lazy and inefficient. Just a bit strange I felt. Similarly, when he apologised for slowness in taking our order, I assured him it wasn't a problem, and this wasn't a race. He curtly informed me that he was keen for it to be 10pm when he finished.The food, when it came, was excellent. Lamb cutlets with mash and veg, cooked to perfection. After we had finished, we had what seemed an exceptionally long wait for he table to be cleared. Two waiters were busying themselves with residents, but it felt like, we were sat at the invisible table.Eventually plates were cleared, but no mention of desert or coffee. And so we waited, and waited, and waited. After at least 30 minutes we paid the bill and left. At the counter apologies were given about being short staffed and somebody having a broken finger. But this was just poor service. I had seen waiting staff coming in and out asking customers if their meal was OK, but ignoring us, as we sat there.Was it something I said?A pity, as the main course really was very good

We had stayed for a week in Braithwaite and had dined ou/t on several occasions - inthe village and elsewhere. This turned out to be the best dining experience we had in the week.

Amazing Lamb with crispy roast potatoes. Lovely gravy and good variety of veg. Then we shared a sublime banana split. Washed down with a refreshing pint. We will be defiantly be eating there again.

My husband and I came to the lakes for his birthday and we were stopping at the Royal Oak which was busy and vibrant with the option to eat. However we decided to venture out and see what else was available. We came across this pub that we actually loved on first impressions for the fact it was still old in interior and had some character. The barman was very helpful on arrival, and was happy to seat us and told us when we asked that we could eat outside if we wanted or indoors. We ordered some wine and took the menus. When we decided what we wanted to eat, we were informed that they didn’t have this or 2 other dishes. This is when the tone of the service changed. We asked for the seabass but without the chilli and lime glaze, and the barman seemed annoyed by this, and then we asked for an extra side of veg on top of our mains, he informed that there was veg with the dishes and did we really want more. Of course as we asked for this and wanted extra veg. He walked off pulled a face and then came back and asked if anything else was wanted. Then informed that he now wouldn’t bring the food outside and would simply leave on the table when it was ready (by this time already had we spent £55 on wine). The waiter in the restaurant came and offered us bread, and then delivered our food. The slow cooked beef brisket “hot pot” was nothing more than a dry Sunday roast dinner with cheap meat that should have been in a casserole, pie or hotpot as described. The extra veg ordered didn’t arrive and the one that did was swimming in water and blanched to death. We asked for the extra and it came quite quickly however this again was waterlogged and over done and completely different to the one before. (Who even blanches a whole fennel with beef) the seabass which was £14 roughly was the smallest piece of fish ever, with basically boiled peeled potatoes described as gremalata .. no parsley, no lemon, no garlic which is exactly what my partner was told they would be when he went up to the bar to order some chips instead. It was all very over sold and under delivered. The atmosphere was awful. No music.. no conversation and then when we left the table to pay for the bill because we didn’t want to make an even worse atmosphere, we were charged half of the price of the beef despite not even eating it. We refused and the chef came out and being very condescending and ranting at us about how the beef is cooked and that hot pot is put on the menu because he “cooked it in a HOT pot” . At the time my partner never mentioned that he owns his own very successful restaurant. Has been a chef and also worked in this industry for 20 years. They took the extra off the bill but only after arguing at the bar in front of other customers which made us feel uncomfortable.

We usually head over to MR a couple of times a month. Love the constantly rotating beers - sometimes find an amazing one, sometimes one that's not to taste but always willing to offer a taste.

Firstly this review has four stars as there is no option to give half a star!

We popped in for lunch today. The manager was charming and attentive. We had the perfect pint with our very tasty sandwich. The bread was so fresh and the chips hot and crispy. Would defiantly go again.

Traveling with our kids, we needed a date night out, and this restaurant was perfect. The dining area had lots of windows with lovely views of the garden. The food was excellent and the waiter very knowledgeable and helpful.

Tomé un 'almuerzo de sándwich' aquí y lo encontré más tranquilo que en nuestra visita anterior, que fue en octubre. El lugar tiene un buen sentido de 'viejo mundo', pero parece estar en peligro de quedar fuera de fecha si no se tiene cuidado. El personal era genial y cervezas y chocie igualmente excelente. Buen valor también por lo que probablemente merece 3. 5 estrellas.

Nice fresh food served by friendly staff who made us and the pooch very welcome. Went two nights in a row it was that good

Managed to get a room here as it's very popular, rooms have all the amenities you need and are very comfortable and the rooms at the front have views of the hills to the north and east of Keswick.

We stayed at the middle Ruddings in Braithwaite for 4nights,dinner,bed and breakfast...Food was excellent,especially the steaks,service was good,staff helpful,room clean and tidy,and above all very reasonable priced....Will stop there again.....
