Expected something a bit thematic, but just a run of the mill pub. Music was really loud.

Found this bar whilst wandering around Whitby and sat outside for a few drinks. Nicely decorated place with open fire, and table service. Sounded like a dj was playing but it was just music with a recorded dj talking, which was a bit odd. The bar itself wasn't that busy, which was good as most of the other places in town were really packed, so we went inside for a bit when it got too cold.

Was a little bit squashed. We were told to share a table with a couple who were already sat down. Felt she was a little bit too assertive. The couple soon left.

Little pub . First time I have ever seen table service in a pub for drinks.

Nice bar, you are encouraged to mix with other people, with how the seating area is arranged. The girls do a fab job of serving drinks.

Came here for old peculiar theakstones which was very good perfect temperature but still they insist on table service for some reason - the funny thing is if its not busy the bar staff hear you tell the waiter what you want and have already pulled your pint before the waiting staff have got to the bar to get it for you. The black horse have given up on this method - its time you did too. I will be back because your old peculiar is good and well kept but I don't need table service.

Dog friendly. Great sauce on tap. Real fire. Fantastic service, table service, really attentive. Friendly staff, welcoming and warm.

One of the best bars in Whitby. We stay near the harbour and this is our first bar we go to. Excellent service and a good atmosphere.

I had high hopes for this place going in. As an avid Lord of the Rings fan I was more than thrilled to see Gollum on the sign. I went in and had half. The pub is dog friendly and has great views of the harbour. It also has an outdoor seating area. Inside, they provide table service. There is a pool table and darts board. We had to sit with another couple which was weird. They were nice. The pub was playing music videos on the TV. They were rather loud. If you like Lord of the rings, this isn't the place for you. If you are after quick drink and a community feel this is the place to be.

Although away from the main hustle and bustle of Whitby town, middle earth tavern is a great find for those looking. The atmosphere is fantastic and large booths shared by locals and tourists means you can strike a conversation with others if youre willing. Staff made you feel very welcome and the added touch of table service made us feel very accommodated. I'd recommend to anyone visiting Whitby.

Another understated (from the outside) pub. Great service and like the way tables and chairs are set up that encourage you to sit with others. Perhaps not to everyone's liking but I think it is a great idea.

Lovely pub, just a little upset that we had to stop playing darts, what is the point having a dartboard if you have to stop playing. Beers is good

Nice enough place. Table layout could be improved to make more seating space. Table service is unusual in a bar - but very prompt. Thought it was going to be olde worlde inside but quite a modern feel. Worth a visit.

2 stars for the beer, the management is awful, told a couple to stop their dog bothering people, when the people had called the dog over, manager told young glass collector off for standing about when he had nothing to do, push the serving staff to get people to order more, table service, not allowed at bar, have to be seated. Don't recommend, used to be a nice pub Sad

Only had drinks...fantastic..table service,which is really nice..staff lovely and friendly..Great choice of real ales.

I remember this as a spit and sawdust pub but it has gone through a major excellent transformation but it is now too clean and tidy. Wood fire has also gone despite a good gas wood effect fire. Ales good and staff excellent but don't expect a prancing pony experience.

Nice place was warm enough to sit outside in November was suprised by table service which was really good.

We revisited after 5 years...back then a real ale pub. Looking forward to returning again we popped in. As we entered looked like the pub we remembered ....proper pub. Short lived however. Went to bar to order a pint only to be told abruptly we needed to go upstairs and order from a table. We went upstairs despite wanting to remain in the downstairs area. What a shock....it was like entering a function we weren't invited to. Tables of all sorts scattered around. Tacky fairy lighting and silks hanging from windows. A closed bar. A random exotic fish tank......honestly looked like a deserted Chinese restaurant with terrible furnishing. No atmosphere. No real ale. Felt like someone had been tasked from the TV show the apprentice.. What a terrible shame. The pub has no idea about its identity. Customer service shocking.

This is our favourite pub to visit when we are at Whitby, always greated with a warm welcome. Nice clean pub, nice and friendly atmosphere and brilliant table service. Will be back next summer.

This pub is a little off the well trodden tourist track, and consequently I would call it a 'hidden gem' albeit in plain sight. We have visited on several occasions previously, this time for my birthday weekend. The bar/serving staff (it's table service only) are fantastic and friendly. The price of a drink is a little more expensive than home (South Yorks), but is probably much cheaper than southerners are used to. Comfortable and clean, unobtrusive 80's music videos play in the background, allowing a bit of a dance if you want one, and still facilitating conversation. I cannot recommend this pub enough. Thank you so much...

Just called for a quick drink sat outside. Table service is good and quick. My wife went to the toilets and said they were clean and the inside looks very nice.

Found this little gem in Whitby and totally enjoyed our night.

A nice pub… but with the name ‘Middle Earth tavern’ it needs to be so much more! With a Gollum/Sméagol hanging sign, it’s pretty disappointing inside as there’s no further LOTR references. Quite odd. Very sanitised and with a strange table service setup (even just for drinks), we left feeling perplexed. Nice, but not nerdy enough.

No Hobbit memorabilia at all. Waitress service despite no food is served.

I had a cup of tea. When putting the milk in it seemed off as was floating. I told one of the staff and she apologised and got me another one. We had drinks there another day. All the staff were friendly and efficient. Lovely pub.

Have to take your own water for dogs and bowl they don’t provide it

Wasn't what I expected. Thought it would be something special but it turned out to be disappointing. Why do you need at table service? You have staff hanging around on a quiet night, waiting for someone to come in. And you're paying for them to stand around. Get back to people standing at the bar ordering drinks..it's what a proper pub does.

We stopped for a pint whilst passing thought the name sounded interesting. We did not not like not being able to pick our drink by the bar as it is table only service.

Immaculately clean and welcoming pub just that little further off the tourist trail but truly worth seeking out. The beer is well kept. Terrace on the front. Go find this gem.

Very disappointed. Nothing Middle Earth about the place, apart from a small Golum model on a shelf behind the bar. Not worth the walk. Don't bother if you're into anything middle earth, it's not for you .

Disappointed. Not welcome inside "table service only" was the greeting from a child. Loads of chairs stacked outside and a few tables. Not at all as suggested by the website. Two young girls taking orders and taking money before you get a drink ( no food) . Should have walked past like other couples did. Not sure what beers were on, I like to check out what's on offer but without going inside ....

Disappointing. Nothing about Tolkien or Middle Earth inside. Fairly bland pub, basic drinks range, table only service, so you can't go to the bar. Not much atmosphere. I should have read the other reviews before going.

Good homely place. Great beer real ales and pleasant staff. Food served all day. Nice walk and views by the harbour, worth the extra effort as it is the first, or last on that side of town. Clean and tidy place all round.

This pub is no longer serving food.

We visited a couple of times and the servers are amazing. They greet you as you arrive and come to take your order extremely quickly. Very young and very good at their jobs.

Table service, lovely inside and out. Upstairs has tables situated in front of windows looking out to sea.

Good prices drinks and table service

I’d seen the Middle Earth pub advertised online and I was excited to go and have a drink there. I have to admit I was disappointed to see it was just a normal pub. I was expecting something more themed - other than the sign outside and the coincidental choice of serving golden pippin beer, there is nothing to do with Middle Earth on the inside. That said, the young waitresses were very pleasant, there were good cocktails, nice fish tank and I had several nice beers. So if you are looking for a themed pub or experience go somewhere else, but if you want a good standard pub Middle Earth pub is worth a visit.

Im not entirely sure how this place has such a high rating. Despite the name it has 0 references to Lord of the Rings inside the pub so if you are a fan of the books or films you will feel mislead. The beer and the interior are ok but really it is just a bog standard boozer with no old school feel to it. It loses an additional star for the fact it enforces a table only service when the place is small and there are only 8 people inside. The Rings of Power: 'I am going to decieve Tolkien fans with the misuse of the name of Tolkiens work' The Middle Earth Tavern manager: 'Hold my beer. Oh wait I already drank it'

Spent two lovely afternoons this week sat in the sun drinking beer 🍺 The old peculiar shandy is cracking. Attentive service at the table, what more could you want.

As a group of walkers, our annual visit to Whitby always includes a drink at Middle Earth. Great space out front overlooking the water and facing the afternoon sun. Usually good beers - the Copper Dragon yesterday was very nice - with table service outside that was prompt and efficient.

Great location right on the harbour. We sat outside and it was table service only, but the waitress was very attentive and always on her feet. Good selection of drinks.

10 years since I was last here, it was a good pub with character, not now, has been revamped for pretty people, fashion over function.

Had a lovely day here. Shame they don't do food anymore.

Went in for some drinks and a game a pool before i was rushed out the pool area by the owner who was extremely drunk. he was very rude to me and my family and his staff (who were perfect and were very apologetic and helpful). Would definitely not recommend anyone going unless you like being hassled by a disgusting landlord.

Visited with my wife and dog, was probably 3 or 4 years since we last went in there, from the moment we arrived we did not feel welcome, went to the bar to be told we needed to sit down as table service (strange in a pub !!). Proceeded to bar to check what real ales that they had on and was again told to sit down, I explained I was checking out the beer and received a very stern reaction ! Drinks arrived and we asked for a bowl of water for the dog but then told they only serve you water in a glass but do not allow bowls for dogs !! We quickly drunk our drinks and left as not very dog friendly !! Will certainly not visit again !!!!

We walked here from the town, and just dropped in for a drink. We didn’t go inside, as it was such a gorgeous day, we sat out the front of the pub in the sunshine. The two girls who were serving were friendly and attentive, and the beer was in excellent condition.

Nice relaxing bar to visit, made very welcome, with table service from very polite staff. We'll worth a visit.

Love sitting outside here when the sun is out. Although been here hundreds of times only just acknowledged the upstairs bar too. Quite different from downstairs if you want the more modern feel.
