Best cafe in Halifax, so underrated. Make the best sandwiches to order, with the best lattes I’ve ever had. I used to come here with family over past 20 years. I visited again this month after living in New Zealand for the last 7 years, did not disappoint. Their sandwiches are what I crave when I’m overseas. 😍

Gloves ! Was pleased to see the lady making sandwiches was wearing gloves . Not so pleased to see the lady taking orders and money interfering and putting beef into a dish to microwave using ungloved hands . At the same time she was barking orders at other staff members who looked absolutely fed up and confused . No one should be spoken too like that . I felt sorry for them .

Disappointing visit here, I’ve always had brilliant sandwiches and coffee when I’ve visited the Merrie England cafes in Huddersfield, sadly the same cannot be said for the visit we had in Halifax on Saturday. The coffees were horrible and not a patch on ones on past experience. It tasted like a sachet of instant .. the tea cakes were a little dry and they weren’t serving soup either. About three or four staff serving, it was pretty quiet in there but one of the staff was so busy shouting over the top of everyone that it confused the others. I won’t go here again and will stick with the Huddersfield shops

had a toastie as was in a rush it was nicely cooked, well presented and tasted good. the cofffees are always super. the staff seem to know the regulars too, but the only downside is its very much an older generation of customers who have a lot of time on their hands which isnt great when customers behind them in the queue are in a rush

Tried this place recently and wish I had tried it sooner, the food is delicious and service friendly and warm, and food quality is always good, I can recommend their cheese omelet sandwich its well worth a try and you can mix and match all the different ingredients and different cheeses to make your own version of the sandwiches, the cakes and desserts come from a good bakery to, all in all a good place to pick up lunch

I guess I will never learn the fate of my severed other half that particular warm Spring April afternoon in Halifax town centre. No - not my spouse who is fully alive, fine and dandy- I am referring dear readers to the remaining half of the Merrie England custard tart that was sold to me as a half portion which I must stress is only ever available by the half. “Famous” custard tarts mind. So famous no Royal seals are needed here. No way! (although coats of arms and armour feature heavily in Merrie England’s decor in keeping with their royal courts of olde England’s ancestry theme lovingly splattered across their 8 shops ) So sitting along their equals namely the world famous apple pie and hot beef teacakes these shimmering translucent god like custard creations are admittedly actually rather tasty if their pastry cases rather bland. But... and it is a big but.... “ Only come in half portions” the server proudly purred pointing predictably to the product nestling inside the counter all rather lonely and bereft. My! they broke the mould when they came up with this half baked idea just after clearly mislaying common sense. Why not make a smaller individual tart and serve them whole? I pondered this as I tossed and turned in bed later that evening contemplating unable to sleep. Now I have sampled slices of quiche or gateaux along my travels as well as another Merrie England speciality - notably their oblong narrow slithers of cheesecake. Soup comes by the bowl- another big step for mankind indeed for the world and coffee shop catering. Condiments ‘ n things come in sachets and some foodstuffs arrive served from hot plates but I have never ever been served half a tart. A tad half hearted don’t you think?

This is a coffee shop at the top of the town and the market. They do a lovely bacon and tomato sandwich with any kind of coffee that takes your fancy. It’s by no means the largest of coffee rooms but the team will give you a warm welcome. Give them a try with all they have to offer you won’t be disappointed

Lets be honest, when you've been doing the town centre shopping, feeling tired and weary but can't face alcohol, then a Merrie England beef sandwich, with onions, is a 'must have' pick-me-up. You just can't beat it. There's a great choice of savoury and sweet things, good tea and coffee too. Enjoy, I always do.

Came today to get a takeaway sandwich for lunch. Lovely little cafe with a good selection of hot and cold handmade sandwiches and cakes. I had a beef sandwich with horseradish and onions. The sandwich was lovely. Only minor suggestion would be to have a sign where to queue as customers were standing everywhere so it seemed a little disorganised and staff didn't know who was next to serve. Otherwise friendly staff and nice food.

On a dry day seats are provided outside. On the inside they have tables on the main floor and downstairs. Being a wheelchair user I rely on level access and tables with space for me to sit around the table. As we went in one of the waitresses saw two seats available at a four seater table and kindly asked if the two ladies who were sat there minded if as a group of three we joined them, provided I was happy to remain in my chair. As this question was being out to the ladies another couple asked if it would be easier if they moved and we had their table. How kind are some people, it really bought joy to my ❣. Having thanked them for their kindness and sat at their table. We had tea and hot water to drink with a portion of egg custard tart. This is such a tasty piece of tart. My only complaint is they do not cater for dairy free customers with cakes or biscuits. Luckily I always have some in my bag I carry around with me, but it always leaves me feeling like a freak of nature. In this century it shouldn’t be the case. It is so easy to make a dairy free cake, everywhere caters for gluten free customers so why not dairy free??? I would gladly give them a much higher rate but no dairy free cakes leaves me knocking points off.

Called in for a toasty and a coffee. The young girl that served us was so miserable it nearly put us off stopping!..staff behind the counter ignorant as they are talking among themselves whilst serving! The toasties were no where near what they are like in quality in comparison to the cafe at Marsh. They took ages to make! The coffee was weak and almost tasteless. At 12.70 you would expect quality. My opinion is they have spoiled these nice cosy cafes by modernising. Bring back the old decor and original staff and produce!

Nothing special but clean cafe with what seemed like lots of staff. One made the sandwiches, one made the coffee, one washed the pots, one took the money - all within a very small space. Fascinating to watch.

Breakfast was okay, nothing special. Diners need to be specific in what they want and understand the lingo relating to food in England, otherwise you may just end up with an omelette and no toast.

Quite busy (visited Saturday - late lunchtime) with tables at a premium and a queue to be served. No frills food and drink - a little expensive for what it was but a welcome break from shopping in a central location.

Ducked in here out of a heavy rainshower and served by very friendly & chatty lady who even gave us some tissue to dry out spectacles. Nice cappuccino and delicious cake. A pleasant change from the usual coffee chains. Interior a little basic but comfortable enough for a quick coffee.

We were strangers to Halifax, and as the cafe looked full, we dropped in for breakfast. The price was competitive and the service friendly but neither the coffee nor the food tasted as if a lot of thought had gone into their preparation.

Good Witherspoons, but it gets very busy early evening particularly at weekends.

We have patronised The Larder for over 5 years, visiting once per month when over in the area on business. On our last visit we ordered two teas as well as meals. I asked if my pot of tea could have an extra tea bag as I find their brand too weak for my taste. The waitress told me to let it stew a bit. I repeated that I would prefer two tea bags and if it was a problem on this occasion I was happy to pay for it. However when the bill came I was horrified that I had been charged £3.00 for the extra tea bag and was reluctantly refunded £l.50. Needless to say we will not be patronising the establishment again. I just hope the lady sat with her dog didn't dare to ask for a bowl of water for it.

Had a brilliant birthday meal. The lady on the bar was absolutely lovely, chatted to us about mispronounced beer orders (we’re bartenders as well!) on a quiet Sunday night! Had the mixed grill - absolutely great value for £20! Meat was cooked to order (a rarity in the past places I’ve been for mixed grills 🙄) and the portion size was HUGE for the price! Absolutely chuffed. Missus had the Sunday roast wrap - couldn’t finish it but she had great things to say as well! Molto Bene!

Came here as just wanted a quick eat, (here for a few hours for Xmas market). Service was quick and friendly, considering they were busy. Had two toasted sandwiches - bigger than your average toastie, and nice big cups of coffee. Came with salad and crisps,. - very filling they were too . The only negative was we wanted something to eat later (maybe another toastie?), and they were no longer doing them. Couldn't get anything anywhere, considering we had a long coach trip.back. However it was a.nice place to go to.
