Do not trust. I was overcharged and did not realise until I got home. Have sent a couple emails and no response. Very poor customer service. Incredibly frustrating.

I am a regular Saturday visitor to Oakes Merry England,I go alone, with my book and love sitting in the conservatory, the staff are nice and friendly, on a Saturday I usually have the turkey seasoning on white and a large coffee, however over the past few weeks the teacakes have been awful, really doughy , I’m sorry to say if they don’t improve I might have to find someplace else for my Saturday lunch

Called in for tea and cake in the afternoon. It was very quiet for a Saturday afternoon, other places in the area were very busy. The place was clean and tidy, the food and drinks were OK, prices about average I guess. I was a bit disappointed by the reception though: there was no greeting or eye contact. We did not feel at all welcome.

I called in to the merrie england packhorse centre last Thursday (8th March) with my granddaughter. It’s my go to place when I take my her into town. As usual the food was excellent, the sandwiches are absolutely gorgeous, as was the large creamy latte. They made my granddaughter a little lunchbox up with a ham sandwich a bag of crisps and a drink, with a chocolate truffle for after which she also loved. It’s a little pricey but worth it. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming, and the staff are lovely and helpful. Me and my work mates have also ordered quite a few cakes from the merrie england packhorse centre too for birthday celebrations and they are amazing. The lemon drizzle especially 😋😋can’t recommend this place enough.

The packhorse centre merrie England has such poor customer service. The staff always look moody and stressed and they never smile. One lady in particular brought my sandwhich and just plonked it down without even looking at me and place was dead so it’s not because she was busy. One day when it snowed they were all complaining and ringing management to go close shop. They were pacing up and down cleaning up hurriedly around me and giving me bad looks… in the end I asked for a bag and a paper cup to eat my sandwhich n drink my coffee outside because I couldn’t stand the atmosphere any longer. I was telling my mum n sister and they said they had same experience too which is not on. I used to love going for a bite to eat n a coffee but now will be going elsewhere where you get a smile and a good experience.

The Merrie England at Oakes is the best for miles. The queues say it all. Sandwiches are reasonably priced and full of their fillings. Staff are helpful. All food is freshly prepared and top quality. Yes, it's as much a part of a visit to Huddersfield as Betty's is to Harrogate, but like Betty's you pay rather a lot for the experience! In fairness, prices are clearly displayed around the counter, as is a selection of the food in glass displays. Either you like what you see and are happy to pay the price, or you're not. The market branch is somewhat cheaper, but not a lot. Overriding impression of the Kirkgate premises? Tired and dated - not in a charming olde worlde way! Look at the state of the wood chairs, faded and worn, in desperate need of a good varnish coat and polish! Might as well go to the branch in the market and save a few bob - it's smarter inside. The toilets however were immaculate and had clearly recently been refurbished - well done! There is a constant theme of complaints on these reviews regarding value for money. It's not great in some respects. On the one hand, the hot beef sandwich I had was rammed full of beef, about the thickness of two steaks, and objectively was decent enough at £4.60. But why the low-rent white bap? A 25 pence wholemeal seeded short baguette - the sort of thing on sale in the co-op bakery pick-and-mix would transform this. Pleasingly, it was actually HOT! Which is most unusual for a hot meat sandwich. The apple pie was certainly the best I have had anywhere but I think that was £4.10? Too dear, much too dear. The portion was a bit measly, and the offered cream appeared to be poured from a can of Elmlea which I understand is actually Buttermilk? It was acceptable, however it certainly wasn't as nice as fresh cream. I asked for a glass of tap water, and received water with a slightly revolting, sugary taint. I identified the reason - they are pouring water through one of those soda dispensing guns you see in pubs. Which means that those soft drinks you are paying so much for don't come from a bottle or can. That, like the bread, seems a bit penny pinching in all honesty! The overriding message from all the reviews for all the Merrie England sites is : nice place, but expensive! That's why I say they need to get their heads out of their backsides. They might fairly look at their relatively busy premises and think they don't need to listen, but they could have a queue up the street if they were a little less expensive. My feeling is that at £8.70 for a hot sandwich and cold sweet, the experience should be faultless, and I would be happy to pay that price and use them far more often if it were.

On returning from a recent adventure I happened upon Merrie England. I walked through the door (as was traditional even during medieval times) and was instantly transported to another world !. Images of crowns cried out from the walls and the banqueting scene picture on the back wall felt so life like I felt I was in it. One slightly disapointing point to note was that the suit of arms was not wearing a mask (surely against COVID regulations?). I had the sandwich of beef whilst my maiden chose the prawn option. We both ate heartedly and were most pleased with our choices. I produced a number of gold coins but then realised more were required. As we reached the door I looked back on the bygone era behind me and thought ....shall I ever return ?...as I walked up the High Street I knew I surely would !

Called in the Packhorse shop after breaking my journey on my way home from work. Pleasant, friendly staff. As I’d not had one of the renowned Hot Beef and Onion sandwiches for a few years it was a must and coffee . I had just a short wait for my sandwich which was piping hot and tasty just I remembered them to be just what was needed after a busy day at work... if I have a grouch that would be the price for a sandwich, I understand overheads etc but I’m sure the price could be reviewed and brought down considering other eateries around offer meals for not much more !! Please don’t out price yourselves Merrie England is part of Huddersfield.

We haven't visited a Merrie England for a while, it used to be a daily occurrence. Visited the Packhorse shop today and was quite disapointed. A date slice, Eccles cake and two small latés came to just over £9. We thought that was quite dear, especially as the cakes have been reduced in size. There is so much competition in the local coffee and cake sector, Merrie England are going to be left behind.

Went into merry England first week in January for a take away in the afternoon. It was almost empty. We wanted Merry England classic beef and onion and egg mayonnaise. Neither were available at 3pm . A comment was made we will be going home early the only thing on sale are the pre packs. That was three white bread rolls . Tuna x2 egg mayonnaise x1. No brown bread . I have recently had radiology and struggle with white bread We explained this. Staff member said that or nothing. We took all three. I fail to believe that bread would not be in the freezer . Unhappy with the attitude. Standards are dropping.

I attended Merry England coffee shop at Oakes Huddersfield this morning. I came with my mother for coffee and a cake. We had a slice each of Christmas cake , a small coffee and a large coffee and the bill was just over £13-00. Absolutely outrageous, how can they justify these prices for 2 very thin slices of cake and 2 coffees. When I questioned the bill a few other customers must have heard me and on there way out they approached me to agree with how much there coffees etc had cost, and the general consensus was we are not coming back , especially when there are lots of equally nice coffee shops in Lindley Village and the surrounding area. I carnt imagine Merry England being concerned as they have regular customers who are prepared to pay these prices, however if enough people boycott the Merry England for a while it may just make them think about there prices. My advice is stay away from Merry England and just go a little further into the Village and get value for money.

There are a few outlets and this is in my view the poorest. Office staff pop in and largely older customers like me. Staff are not as friendly here. Maybe it's because they are working fast and haven't time for a smile or small talk. I feel lonely when I go in and come out. I asked others in the cafe they said the same thing. The star of the menu is a roast beef sandwich with onions. They do other sandwiches like egg, tuna, prawn ,ham and cheese There is a beef specialist in America Archie with the same menu and this wafer thin beef. The top sweet is Apple pie with chunky pieces of Apple, my favourite, but again a copy of the USA outlets. Food is good.

I used to love Merrie England and have been a loyal customer for over 25 years but will start to visit less now due to poor value. I ordered a beef and onion sandwich with mushroom soup for lunch today. The soup was superb and very tasty but the so called BEEF and onion sandwich was more like an ONION sandwich with a slight hint of beef! WTF! It cost over £7.50 for both so not cheap either. I returned the sandwich and the lady said what's wrong with it? She reluctantly put more meat on it whilst frowning at me. The other day I got the same sandwich from another branch in town and there was loads of beef on it? Do you guys not weigh or measure the portions anymore? See my photo guys!

Looking forward to the reputable hot beef tea cake with thick gravy.Very disappointing, the tea cakes were half the size they used to be, the beef was, I’d say processed beef, the thick so called, gravy was not, I’d say bistro, not made with the beef. The Merrie England cafe was, well not like the old days, when you struggled to find a table, but half a dozen people in. I visited on the 29th of March. The customer service was horrendous from the moment I walked in. The assistant had a fed up expression and made us feel more like an inconvenience. I asked for a bacon and tomato butty, and she replied “butty?” and made a disgusted face which made me think I had said something wrong. We were asked if we wanted some fresh bacon because the bacon left out had been cooked a while ago. At first we said no, but then changed our minds before she started making it and asked for some fresh bacon, which she got reluctantly. After we payed at the til, our butties were ready and she was holding them as the tray was full. My daughter went to go bring them to the table because we sensed that she was annoyed. She ending up bringing them to the table anyway because I think she realised that we had picked up on her poor manners. The whole experience wasn’t pleasant and I will not be visiting this Merrie England again.

Early afternoon on Saturday I was passing the New Street branch in Huddersfield and decided to pop in for a late lunch. I ordered a pot of tea and a toasted ham and cheese sandwich on granary bread. The order for the sandwich was taken whilst I was third in the queue, when it was my turn I ordered my tea and paid the bill. I was on my second cup of (not very nice) tea when I had to chase up the toasted sandwich, the waitress brought it immediately (without speaking a word), it must have been sitting waiting on the servery because when I started eating it was not hot, so well 'toasted' the bread was very hard. The young man heard this and turned round and questioned this. The manager then had to step in and apologise and offered them their money back and a free meal.Quite rightly they refused and walked out and I don't blame them,I would have done the same. The staff obviously thought they were younger than they were and didn't like young people on their own in the shop.At the Outlane cafe it is exactly the opposite where they welcome schoolchildren from the nearby schools. I provided my student ID card, and my friend presented her Merrie England discount code she had on an app, that the lady serving us (who also happened to be the manager) refused and told her in a disgustingly patronising manner that she could not accept anything on a smartphone, only an actual card (which also isn't correct) when we disputed this, she finally allowed it after repeatedly "tutting" and reminding her she couldn't do that next time. I was shocked!! And from previous experience, all of the Merrie England's that I have visited seem to offer a similar sort of minimal customer service experience. Horrible.

i've been to other branches, and found this one just as good,[ if a little darkly lit for me ].my ham salad t. cake was nice, my cup of tea was a bit milky, would have preferred a tea pot, then could have added my own. the apple pie was lovely as usual, with cream of course, staff were quite pleasant even though they were busy. not the cheapest lunch in town, but i was at this end of town, as i had visited the open market .

Unfortunately lives on its past reputation, The Bacon is always tough as it has been under the heat light for along while so not freshly cooked, the coffee is good. not the cheapest coffee shop in town and a little over priced for what you get.

It paints a lovely picture, the notion of a bacon butty and a cuppa in such a quaintly-named cafe on a freezing winter's day. The reality? Bacon had obviously been on the warmer for several hours, I could have made shoes out of it. A minuscule sachet of ketchup. Mediocre cup of tea with too much milk. Far too expensive. And it wouldn't be a bad idea for the staff to be reminded that it says "Merrie" over the door.

I couldn't find merrie England halifax so writing about it on Huddersfield one..one member of staff at the halifax branch was so rude it was unbelievable, after ordering 2 sandwiches to take out we decided to have a coffee ,as we were waiting longer than expected for a friend we decided to eat our sandwiches ( of which we had paid £9 80 for along with the coffees)we really shouldn't have done that I know)after about the second mouthful the assistant came over shouting saying we hadn't paid to eat it inside, the place had a lot of people in and we were so embarrassed at the way everyone could hear her,if she had said it quietly it would have been a lot more professional, we will not be returning to this cafe after useing it for years.

I had such a surprise to see that the Merrie England on New Hey Road was open on Sundays. I have been a fan for many many years and now I can get my fix on a Sunday too.

Huddersfield institution. Merrie England roast beef and onion tea cake, followed by Apple pie with cream and of course Merrie England original coffee. Yummy. Quite a few around the Town Centre. Get very busy over lunch time. Quite noisy too. For a bite on the run okay. If you want something more leisurely go to the Oakes cafe, bit more civilised. Love it.

Each time I walk past the New St shop the manager and her blonde side kick are usually fagging it and screeching loudly with laughter outside the shop. I was sat waiting for toast I'd ordered, the ladies inside we're run ragged as customers were waiting, then when the manager had finished her drink and food and cigarettes, she just left her plates and cups and sauntered back inside. My toast got burnt, it's the second time now. Walking past all the smoke is enough in itself but I won't be going back to buy anything.

Been many times to Merrie England shops and can always be sure of good coffee and sandwiches. Can get rather busy at peak lunch times etc., so would aim for morning coffee to get a seat.

Called at the Merrie England on the main road going into Huddersfield. They make the best coffee going and their home made apple pie is delicious.

Anybody who has been born and bred in 'Uddersfield has got to have a special place in their heart for the Merrie England! Great little mock medieval cafés with cheery staff always up for a bit of friendly banter! Best hot beef sandwiches ever and the lemon meringue is delicious with a large coffee.... Spot on every time! Oh and the egg mayo sandwiches, toasted current teacakes and egg custards are jolly good too....!

There are 6 of these vaguely Henry VIII-themed oddities scattered around town. They are/were Huddersfield’s contribution to the 1960s coffee-bar/café ‘scene’. They serve the kind of desserts you won’t have experienced since your childhood and are locally famous for their hot roast beef sandwiches.

these have got to be the best roast beef sandwich in huddersfield, in fact the whole country, best if you get one which has not been pre made as you tend to get more beef lol, a bit pricey but well worth it, friendly staff but thats what there paid for

I stepped in for a quick snack to the Kirkgate coffeeshop before taking my train back to London one Saturday earlier this month. Waited my turn in the queue amid nervous shouting of orders and scolding the staff for the lack of mugs or knives. Ok. I don't think of myself as a nuisance customer, however found to have been treated like one when I simply didn't understand the difference in sandwiches or coffee milk and sizes. How dare I. The lady behind the coffee machine literally made me feel like a fool in front of other people explaining things just to prove her point rather than help. Well, I'm sorry I'm not local or a regular. All of that just to find out at the table that she got my coffee completely wrong! I was going to ask for another one so I came over just to be ignored by the said lady as at that moment the most important issue seemed to be shouting at the staff to "get their as*es together" and work. Couldn't believe my ears and left the shop completely embarrassed. I work in catering myself. Things like that should not happen. They just should not.

I must say I have visited many of the stores by my favourite has to be the one on new street. The staff there all seem to always have a smile on their faces and their customer service is spot on. Even when the customers are queuing out the door they ensure every customer has the same fantastic service they deserve. Their never to busy to take your tray to your table and they are always up and down clearing tables to ensure that there is always a good clean atmosphere and somewhere clean to eat. If I had to recommend fresh quality food fantastic service and a great atmosphere go to Merrie England at new street you won't be disappointed at all.

This small local chain appropriately named as Huddersfield is the real home of Robin Hood rather than Nottingham and they have been cheerfully supplying good wholesome food for a very long time to the good folk of Huddersfield on their way to the market and other attractions in bathe bustling heart of this lovely town. Merrie England predates Skinny Latte and black Ameericano so if you love traditional English coffee you will be very happy here too.

Another 25 minute wait at the drive through - not because there was a big queue but because the staff are so slow and inefficient - perhaps becase there are so many of them. Watching them was painful. It would have been quicker to buy a coffee machine from argos, bread / fillings from supermarket and go home to make the 1 coffee & 4 sandwiches myself.

Been a regular customer of brighouse merry england for years, always satisfied until last 3 or 4 months. Whats happened to the coffee!!! Its gone from nice creamy frothy texture to a tasteless browny watery texture,i think the staff are not trained to use the coffee machine properly as there is an art to making a proper cup of coffee

Firstly, the staff were very welcoming, pleasant and customary. Least to say the food was clearly home made and personally, defined exactly both the heritage and prestige of what merrie England epitomizes which is ultimately: good food, good quality and crucially- good service. Though respective of this, I recently read some reviews below on trip advisor in relation to merrie England and decided to make my own judgement on this cafe as such resentful and strongly testamented reviews really struck me to query such an ambivalent or, if you like; unwelcome place with supposed 'rude staff' and food standards of 'poor quality'... Though albeit all of this, I couldn't categorically oppose this possibly any more. Thus, as explanatory as my review seems, merrie England IS an exceptionally refined cafe in which I, as a food lover and immersive diner, would only recommend YOU to conclude your own review upon this distinctive, heritage and class caf'!!!

Felt like an unpleasant throw back to the 70s. Staff rude and abrupt, with no idea about Customer Service. Food mediocre in the extreme, with throw back menu, but with 2013 prices. Horrible stainless steel teapots smaller than cup. Tea for two same size as tea for one. Couldn't recommend horrible dried up cakes to my worst enemy. Staff couldn't wait for us to leave at 3.55, closing all the doors on a stifling hot day, mopping round us etc. very untidy and dirty throughout. Drab decor. Only plus point loads of car parking and near motorway for a quick get away. Spoiled an enjoyable day out.

I have been going to the merrie England for over 30 years. I always go to the one in the queensgate market. The staff are really friendly and always remember how I like my coffee without me having to ask. I love the beef and onion sandwiches too. I also think it is great that they will happily carry trays for the elderly or anyone who is not too steady on their feet and on several occasions have taken orders for the customers who are more unsteady on their feet which is great considering that it isn't a table service place. the staff are wonderful and nothing is too much trouble for them. I for one will keep returning

Just arrived home from Mozzarellas. It was our 58th wedding anniversary and we decided to celebrate it with a meal. It was absolutely gorgeous, I had the seafood pasta and my husband had the Sea Bass. Both meals were delicious and the service was fantastic. Thank you . Tony Dreda and Rory the dog. See you as usual on Sunday x

Not too bad, food was ok and the place was clean, although service could be better. Maybe a little refresher on customer service?
