Superbo! I was somewhat lost in the town, looking for the station, and I came across this perfect oasis. As friendly as can be and a fabulous environment for a drink or meal. Places like this are precious and need to be visited.

An excellent place to eat and drink wonderful food and a fantastic atmosphere, run by a couple who really care about what they are doing and that really shows .

THE best little secret in sandwich I love this place , outstanding food and drink all served in a place with amazingly cozy atmosphere and the most attentive owners I can't recommend this establishment enough.

Quirky and cosy! Absolutely loved this place. What seems like a “hole in the wall” bar has such a cool vibe. Annette (owner) and Gavin (chef) made us feel SO welcome. Their customer service is what every business should aspire to achieve!

A hidden gem in the heart of Sandwich

A micropub tucked away near Sandwich's central square. Quite eclectic but comfortable and good beers. may be worth checking hours before visiting as it can be a bit irregular.

An excellent meal, we had fajitas served on a sizzling skillet, really tasty. Supper friendly and great atmosphere. Looking forward to trying their Sunday lunch.

I've always had a decent pint here,the courtyard is a delight in the better weather . friendly and welcoming micropub.

What a hidden gem. So I didn't know about this pub which was hidden in the corner. We went in without a booking, thinking it's a Sunday and its quite early, we should be fine. but they said they all quite full, so I was surprised. They popped us at the outside table. It was cosy and really lovely. The food came and we were not disappointed. One of our friends hate vegetables but is a veggie.. and he ate all of the food cos it was so delicious. The portions are generous.

So far I’ve eaten a good range of dishes from the super quirky bar and restaurant tucked away in central Sandwich. Really tasty tapas to perfectly cooked rib eye, fabulous desserts and my out and out favourite, the Sunday Roast. This is a beast of a meal with countless carefully and delicately cooked veg accompaniments. All of the food I’ve had here has been superb. The venue the staff the food are all original, characterful and top quality. It takes time to produce food this good from a tiny team in a small space. There’s a take away next door if you are in a rush for mediocrity.

Absolutely fantastic meal last Friday.The staff were very friendly, nothing was too much trouble for the Chefs. We all enjoyed 3 courses. Starters: Tempura chicken, Calamari and a Scallop & King prawn dish. For main: Cod for one, Rib eye steak for other 3 of us (all cooked to perfection) with chips and accompaniments. For dessert: Brownie for 2, Peanut butter ice cream and lastly a Profiteroles. A sublime meal, would highly recommend!! Compliments to the Chefs again!!

Fantastic Sunday lunch One of the best ever . Wine great Food great Atmosphere cosy. Loved it Courtyard smelt of wee..which was unfortunate and it wasn't from the toilet which is located off the courtyard and was very clean and tidy . (Think a desperate customer must have had a sneaky pee in the corner) I

Brilliant staff and even better food (calamari with homemade tartare), do not hesitate to try for yourself!!!😉👍

Quirky, unique little place serving tasty food and drinks. Perfect place for a catch up with friends, made to feel welcome and such a nice setting in sandwich town.

Nice little micro pub, opening times vary, choice of ciders, gins and ales, nice outside seating area. Nice lady behind the bar.

We stumbled across The Mermaids Locker when we stopped by for a drink. We decided to reserve a table for the evening and we were not disappointed. My husband said the ribs were the best he’d ever had and my steak was delicious. The guy next to us proposed to his lady too - special night. Thanks for a meal to remember!

Don't be put off the unprepossessing location next to a Kebab Shop, this is the best food in Sandwich. None of your Brakes-supplied pre-prepared nonsense you find in most pubs these days. Everything appears to be cooked from fresh (I've seen the owner buying fish in the local fishmonger) - you can watch the chef from the bar area. It's a small place and has a small but nice sunny garden at the back. A rather small selection of real ales (only 2), but very well chosen and kept. Service was informal and helpful. My only criticism would be their website where the opening hours bear no relationship to the actual opening hours. My go-to place in Sandwich now, so much better than other more obvious and better positioned establishments.

Beautiful food, lovely staff, great pub

Following TripAdvisors high rating we booked up for a weekday evening meal for our Family. The pub is in a quaint corner of a beautiful historic town, the decor is eclectic and bohemian and set the tone for a quirky and friendly vibe throughout our experience. The staff paid considerable attention to our needs and even went as far as suggesting and preparing a meal off the menu when they had notice our younger daughter was being a bit picky. The food we had was tasty and obviously fresh and home made. Servings were very generous. The staff were attentive and friendly. The venue cuts a nice balance between a local pub and a welcoming place to dine. I'd definitely go back. Don't expect a corporate dining experience but a place with local charm.

Thank you again to everyone at The Mermaids Locker! A fabulous meal, my starter was delicious! I chose roasted fig with Camembert, drizzled in honey and pistachio. Followed by the tempura monk fish, pea and mint sauce, French beans and changed my new potatoes for chips, I was delighted that they were skin on and sea salted, so tasty. Service as always was fantastic, looking forward to my next visit 👍😊

Lovely little place, very unique and friendly and the food was excellent. The central garden table feature with soft seating was so enjoyable and relaxing. Had a great and memorable evening.

Fun pub with lots of interesting curiosities, and flies....

Slightly disappointed as only 1 real ale available and the cider was far to cold. The place had amazing nik naks and lovely court yard out the back.

First time in this wonderful restaurant but not the last, the food was amazing, fresh, delicious and plenty. The service was fantastic. Can’t wait to go again.

Was recommended this place and so I looked online and food reviews were amazing! We went for Sunday lunch when euro champions final was playing, so as it was quiet we could sit in the beautiful outside area. The interior is quirky with lots to look at. The couple I think that ran it were polite, friendly and helpful. The roast beef was divine, as were roasties, purple carrots and massive Yorkshire. The cauli cheese came out with broccoli and leeks added. Was wonderful and all lovely and hot. Very good value and well cooked and presented. Probably the best roast I’ve had out. Thank you. I will be returning with friends and my partner.

Never been to the Mermaid Locker before but we were made very welcome not to mention the cuisine. My husband had dressed crab which was superb and I was spoilt with having steak. Really is a gorgeous venue very much worth a visit! Great ales too. We will definitely be back.

Never let down by the amazing food in The Mermaids Locker, Sandwich. Gorgeous Sunday lunch in wonderful period surroundings. Such generous portions (see pictures) and loaded with beautiful veg (we counted 11 different types) perfectly cooked. A real feast and fabulous value. Got to be the most impressive road around. The normal menu looks wonderful as well.

Our Gas cooker gave up the ghost so we looked around for a roast lunch locally and came across the Mermaid and decided to give it a go. Glad we did! Excellent pork and beef with all the trimmings (and then some) served in charming aand quirky surroundings. Good beer and wine as well. Thoroughly recommended and good value, we’ll be back

This is a small restaurant in the middle of Sandwich - a town you can walk in for hours with something new and remarkable round every corner. The decor is delightfully individual, even eccentric. We had the Sunday roast - one nut roast and one pork, both done exactly right, and accompanied by an abundance of vegetables, all treated with the same attention. Neither was expensive. A small plate had three colours of carrot on it, each with its own distinctive flavour - all this under the gaze of a five foot tall wooden seahorse. We were smiling when we sat down, and beaming when we left. Of its special kind could hardly be bettered

Due to the current circumstances, we didn't expect to be able to eat out much on our visit to Sandwich. Luckily there was a slot, so we grabbed it, and it turned out to be excellent. Very pleasant and attentive staff, interesting food, and a very pleasant boltholeish feeling to the place. Lovely meal. I was delighted to encounter raspberries in my salad too. Highly recommended.

Visited Mermaid with my family in July Gavin and Annette were great hosts , lunch was excellent and the bar full of interesting artefacts!!! Heartily recommend!

We were pleased to find this restaurant could take our on the day booking for the evening - (3rd Saturday of lockdown easement). Not sure what to expect being first time visitors, we were warmly welcomed on arrival and seated at an appropriately distanced (and clean!) table. We tried a couple of the draft beers (nice), and ordered falafel and tricolore salad for starters and chicken & chorizo linguine and a breaded pork dish for mains. All four dishes were great, the portions were generous and had really interesting flavours. The chef came out before he cooked the main which was nice. We couldn't manage a dessert but will next time. The whole menu (not sure if this is while its easing back ?) is on a mobile blackboard which made us feel that it was all 'specials'. We' will return.

Enjoyed a take away High Tea on VE Day. Can especially recommend the sausage rolls, individual Victoria Sandwich cakes, the profiteroles and the chocolate brownies. The sandwich fillings were great too. Hell, it was all scrumptious. Well done Annette & Gavin. A great idea, we'll executed.

Booked for 6 people for dinner on a Saturday night but unfortunately did not have a very good experience. From waiting nearly an hour to order food, to a raw prawn in one of the starters and ending with being told the main dish one of our party ordered was no longer available after the other five mains had been served to the table. Shame because we had high expectations given other reviews.

Lovely cozy place with nice selection of drinks. We were there to have a meal and it didn't disappoint. Nice relaxed atmosphere and the food was really tasty. The log fire kept the room just at the right temperature on this chilly windy night.

Super cosy little pub with a lovely fire in the back and a cute little outside area too. Good draught beers and the food was amazing. The chef clearly knows what they're doing and has a real care for their craft. As long as you're willing to spend a little more than your average pub dinner, you'll get something far better than the average pub dinner.

If you don’t want to cook on a Sunday then book a table here. The choice is only roasts but you can choose between beef, lamb or pork and all come with great Yorkshire pudding and plenty of vegetables. The ambiance is homely and friendly and the bar is well stocked.

Beautiful food, friendly staff. Love the decor and atmosphere and the chef likes to come out from the kitchen and enquire as to how your meal was which is a nice touch. Will def be returning!

A day trip yo this lovely and interesting town. Dropped in to the Mermaids Locker for afternoon tea. Very pleasant and nicely located at the Cattle Market.

Thank you to Annette and Gavin for a wonderful evening in their quirky establishment. Gavin spent great thought and consideration towards My wife’s dietary needs and delivered delicious food for both of us. We met some locals towards the end of the meal and they couldn’t have been more charming. Had a thoroughly entertaining evening. Bravo.

We had a delicious meal here, fillet steak with cream and mushroom sauce (handcut chips must not be missed!) and chicken fajitas. Really generous portions and the lovely chef came to ask if everything was ok. We will definitely be back and will bring friends. This little gem is an an absolute find. Highly recommended. P. S. The chef told us the menu changes weekly so even more reason to keep returning!

Fantastic Sunday Roast my wife had the vegetarian nut roast which looked fabulous and was a bit spicy, I had the lamb which was so tender it melted in the mouth, but what set it apart was the care and attention that had obviously gone into the multitude of vegetables accompanying the dish, obviously to get a good review on a roast the potatoes and the Yorkshire pudding have to be perfect - they were, but I had to call the chef out to ask how he had made things like the parsnips so sweet and tender, and he gave up a few of his secrets, every item on the plate was an absolute treat, including the side dish of cauliflower cheese and the red cabbage, also included was fine french beans, carrot, beetroot, sweet potato purée and of course gravy and mint sauce. Fantastic best Sunday roast in Sandwich (and that’s saying something)

The food was delicious and such great quality. You can't get better, the selection is a food lover's dream, something for everyone. I'm sure I will start to work my way through the entire menu with pleasure on every visit. The staff are also very friendly and so helpful, nothing is too much trouble. Its a 10 out of 10 from me

Sunday lunch, so tasty,and the plates were enormous. All freshly cooked to order even with a gluten free choice for our guest. Booking is advisable and ordering in advance if you can. The place used to be a public house and a horse brass shop of an enthusiast it has been tastefully refurbished.

This is a quircky little place, has lots of character! We went in for dinner. The menu is a set menu.We took the three courses and wasn't disappointed at all.The food was so good.The Lady serving us was very attentive.The chef came out to check we was happy with our food! If your in Sandwich you must visit this lovely tucked away restaurant/ bar.If ever that way again I will visit again.Thank you for a lovely meal

I love the food in the Mermaids Locker, I've never experienced a bad dish. The Thai menu was excellent, the roast dinners are to die for and just sharing some starters for a lighter meal, you can't go wrong. I thoroughly recommend eating here or just going for a drink, its quirky, friendly and one of the best pubs in Sandwich. Thank you Gavin :-)

We visited on the sunday of the bank holiday weekend when there was a forties theme in Sandwich. They had sold out of everything on the Saturday and were only serving roast lunches. How lucky that turned out to be! Between us we sampled the lamb, beef And pork and none failed to please. The meats were cooked to our individual tastes and were served with copious properly cooked vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, and crackling with the pork. Puddings were also good and the choice of ales just right. We were also treated to a musical hour or so which was the icing on the cake. Service couldn’t have been better.

Dropped in here to get something to eat on a Sunday lunchtime during the Sandwich 40’s weekend. They’d sold out of everything the day before because of the event on in town, so all they had was Sunday lunch left. I have to say, this was pretty much the best Sunday lunch I’ve ever had. The place is so understated, it’s cosy, friendly, great service and superb food. I really can’t recommend it highly enough !!! Regular weekly menu (always available when there’s not a big event in town) is varied and comprehensive, lots of choices for everyone.

Great night with live music too. We only had drinks, but the food being served up looked amazing, we must return. Had a few pints of the Spaten lager from Munich. Very nice. Loved the decor with the taxidermy and soft lighting coupled with the nautical theme. Gavin the host was very welcoming and friendly. Kentish cask ales available too. Good selection of spirits finished off the repertoire. Will definitely return to this hidden gem of Sandwich.

Whilst looking at a pub menu in the centre of Sandwich a local kindly suggested a number of alternatives and highly recommended the Mermaids Locker and boy was he right. I wandered in to see what they served explaining that one of our party was hoping for something veggie and lighter. The chef who happened to be standing in the bar immediately suggested he could do a main sized version of the goats tartlet so the decision was made and the rest of the party followed me in. In the end the Duck on offer was too enticing and the goats offering dropped and three ducks ordered. The fourth was chicken and mushroom pie with a proper puff pastry topping (not those annoying mile high fluffy piles of air so often served). The chunky chips that came with it were the best I've had for a long time. Maybe too many but I just couldn't leave any they were that good good. All the did is home cooked and locally sourced. We were warned that the Duck may have shot in it which sounded like an attempt to make it sound more exciting but indeed one prison did find some :-) The bar is well stocked with wine and guest ales in barrels so we were well suited. The venue is small and cosy. We were in the back section which has both table and leather chairs and sofa. Already planning on visiting for Christmas dinner sometime in December and will definitely be back before then. Fantastic stroke of luck to bump into the local as the venue is very discrete from the outside and we'd have missed a lovely evening visiting one of our usual haunts.

Gavin and Annette provide a friendly atmosphere and make us welcome every time we visit Sandwich, for a coeliac who prefers cider to beer there is always a great selection of still cider on offer, personally I think the mango cider is the best! The food is very high quality and freshly made to order. The locker has great character and furniture is frequently changing as if you like it you can make a good offer and take it with you, enjoy ...

The food and welcome in The Mermaid’s Locker is truly excellent! It’s a very atmospheric four hundred and seventeen year old building (I know this because my family lived in it many years ago!) It is a huge pleasure for me to go and sit by the roaring fire with friends awaiting what ever culinary delights the owner Gavin will be magicing up. He comes out and says to me “ So what am I cooking for you today?” And makes suggestions as I am vegetarian and have a dislike of certain foods (ok, me = fuss pot!) ! But where else would you find this? So many places are actually uncaring about vegetarians and don’t offer anything more than a cursory veggie dish not as interesting and well cooked as my own! The Mermaids Locker is the caring exception!

Warm welcome on a chilly evening - thanks for the delicious food and kind, personal welcome! The team looked after all of the diners and drinkers with an air of ease and kindness - and the live music by Andy Twyman was engaging and fun. What a nice way to finish a work trip!

Saturday lunch here on a flying visit. Recommended by he folks in the hardware shop and they weren’t wrong. Perfectly cooked risotto with attention to detail and chicken goujons that were light years away from much pub fare. Knowledgeable staff and a friendly welcome. Can’t fault it.

I came here to celebrate my partners birthday after many recommendations and promises of excellent food from friends and locals alike. I phoned in advance and, speaking to the chef, arranged for my partner to have roast partridge, a favourite of hers, which was served with seasonal vegetables and a red berry jus. The food was truly exceptional, beyond all my expectations, safe to say she was impressed too! All in all I found the place a lovely, welcoming venue, with amazing food and great drinks, I myself enjoying a pristine pale ale before moving onto the bubbly! I would definitely recommend and will be back again. Attached is a picture of my partners meal, it would of been a crime not to share it.

Nice bar , very unusual but after trying the local sheps pub it was a nice change ,we dint eat here but many did and the comments were all good , we were allowed a free sample of old j tiki fire 75% proof which warmed us up , friendly staff definitely worth a visit

Tried this place on a Friday evening. We were the only clients. First real ale pint was off. Barmaid told us that it was meant to be like that: cloudy, smelling and tasting of vinegar, very warm. She grudgingly replaced the 'dark ruby bitter' with another ale which was also far too warm and less than pleasant, but at least not off. After 30 years as a CAMRA member I resent being told that a stale beer is fine by someone who admitted that she didn't know what the beer should be like and wouldn't taste it herself. But check out the management response to hubby's observations on Tripadvisor. Charming!

Fantastic lunch. Quirky place. highly recommend for the Sunday lunch

This review is based on the drinking experience as didn't eat here. We were attracted by the prospect of some decent ale but were disappointed by receiving an "off" pint that was vinegary. We were offered the other ale available after we raised a concern. This was better but served too warm. We quickly drank it and left. The server although polite, had effectively told us that we were wrong as it was a recent barrel. It seemed as if this is a very good restaurant trying to expand into the micro pub market but they need to improve their beer keeping.
