Had a lovely lunch at The Malt Shovel today. Very welcoming, top notch service and the the food was amazing. Lovely fries which is always a good sign, I had a toastie which was perfect for lunch, best I've had. Well kept beers, spotlessly clean interior and sun trap beer garden. Definitely be back.

Great to have a village pub again and seeing it do so well. My only criticism is too many TVs. Personally I would restrict to 1 screen except for big events but that’s just my own opinion

Not sure how to rate this pub.... The design is stark, but clean. Hate TV's, but understand why they have them. Everything is very grey. The pizzas were excellent. A good pub, but not like a country pub.

We went to the Malt Shovel for lunch on Monday as it was my husbands birthday. It was very quiet but we expected that, what we didnt expect that all food had 50% off!! We ordered the sharing platter & cheesy chips with sweet chilli sauce & chicken strips. The food was fantastic, tasty & hot & we struggled to eat everything. It was fantastic value for money & we will definitely go back as its at the end of our road.

Some customers, who seemed to be friends with the landlady, "subtly" directed a couple of racial slurs at my girlfriend and her friend when they visited. Wouldn't have been difficult for the landlady to shut that kind of behaviour down but she chose not to, for whatever reason. Definitely the kind of place to avoid if you're not white.

Dropped in for an afternoon rehydration during my hike along the Chevin and the moors. Two pubs next to each other, but only this was open--so that's a bonus point for a start. Just a handful of drinkers inside, but all very friendly and chatty, so I spent an hour very happily here, drinking a couple of Sam Smith's excellent organic lagers. The barmaid, Julie from Rawdon, was running the place during the owners' holiday. Along with the customers, she was a warm and lively character, who owned a sweet little dog, which she came round to let us stroke, and some well-drawn tattoos. Views on Sam Smith's differ, but I like their beers--and you can find a cheap pint in their pubs if you want. Pot luck whether a hiker finds good company in random pubs: but I did at the Menston Arms and will remember it with warmth.

Having had all its trouble's this little pub seems to be on a slow upward trend. My wife and I were regulars but we haven't been in for a longtime however we went in Sunday lunch time. It was fairly quiet although the regulars were in, we knew many of them. The beer and larger is first class the best I've tasted and at very low prices or three pints for£5.04p very good value. This little pub also doe's food but I don't know what it's like. Well worth a visit.

Wow, what a lovely place this is! We were staying at The Marriott, Hollins Hall and as their restaurant is closed on a Monday night, they recommended we try The Fox. We are so pleased that we did! Staff were so friendly and welcoming and we must give a special mention to Lisa who really made the evening special for us by helping us to decide upon our food order to bringing us extra sauce for the chicken and generally being so friendly and chatty in a really unobtrusive manner. What a star she is - real asset to this place - in fact, from what we experienced, all of the staff there that night were excellent. We loved the ambience and the decor (particularly the logs feature on the walls - we may just pinch that idea some time! We will definitely make The Fox our first choice next time we venture to Yorkshire from Cumbria Thank you to all :0) Lindsey and George - Hillsdale in Ambleside x

We haven't been to the Menston Arms since last year and popped in today as we were hungry and in the area. The place wasn't very busy but it had lovely log fires and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The place is tied to Sam Smiths and the draft stout was excellent. The food is also controlled by the brewery and the pies came from an independent butcher in Tadcaster. Both the Steak and Ale pies and the cheese and potato pies were excellent and came with chips or mash and fresh vegetables. We got talking to the barman to discover that the place had changed hands and they had only decided to start serving food again a couple of days ago. On the basis of today we will be going again. The lunch for four was less than ten pounds a head including drinks. Be aware they don't take credit cards, but there is a cash machine just up the road

Visited early Sunday lunchtime with my partner and little boy. Wonderful friendly welcome from the landlord and landlady, I presume. Nice bench area to the rear and a lovely warm interior with roaring open fires. Excellent priced food and drinks, as expected from a Sam Smiths house, including some of the best homemade chips I have ever had in a pub environment. Service was outstanding and the locals very jolly and friendly. Well worth a visit to this great hostelry, we will certainly be back for a full lunch, and to sample the extensive drinks menu babysitter allowing😀🍻🍽

Unfortunately this pub was lacking in both customers and atmosphere, but saying that We had Sunday lunch which was two course of either soup and main or main and pudding. I had beef after jokingly asking if it was still alive on the plate and was assured it was well cooked . I have to agree it was very well cooked and would have this again, this came with peas, carrots, green beans mash and roast potatoes followed by a tasty apple crumble. Value for money yes.

We came for mothers day with our friends. It's a lovely pub and the menu shows a good variety but everything we had was overcooked and basic. It was like my nanna had done it and she used to take things out when it began to fall apart. Liver and onions was like dog food, sausage and mash was floating in gravy soup and beef diner was like leather. Lovely village and pub but stuck to drink not food.

Place is clean and tidy. Food is awful. Had Festive meal of starter and main. Starter of nachos meant to have pulled turkey and bacon. Needed microscope to find it. Main of Xmas dinner was terrible. All the veg was way over cooked and soggy. Yorkshire pud needed hammer and chisel, roast pots under cooked, stuffing ball absolutely tasteless and I don't think you can get a smaller pig in blanket. £45 down the drain.

We were here for a family wedding and booked in for two nights. We arrived late afternoon and were shown to our room (called Botany) via a back staircase which was in urgent need of a vacuum cleaner. Halfway up there was an emergency door leading to the back yard of the pub which was wide open letting cold air in. At the top of the staircase was an office door which was wide open revealing what can only be described as chaos. On entering the room things were much cleaner and the room was quite acceptable although a little dark with all the old furnishings. The bathroom was well fitted and very bright with a bath and walk-in shower. We were then told that the only exit at night after closing time was via the back door as the pub was locked and unmanned which we found rather disconcerting as did other guests in the next room. We had arranged a meal in the pub with family that evening and everything was perfect, food, service and restaurant were very good, so that gave us a good feeling for the breakfast offering. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Breakfast is extremely poor, held in a tiny room upstairs where there are three very small tables and a kitchen set-up. You serve yourself with everything except a pre-ordered hot breakfast at your designated time, which was a big disappointment with sausages that tasted off and bacon that was overcooked and hard. All toast and teas/coffees were self-serve. Certainly not the experience that was expected given the room rate of £120 per night! Surely it would be much better served in the restaurant?? We were vastly disappointed and declined breakfast the next morning leaving early. It must be said staff were all very polite and helpful, perhaps management need to take a closer look at their offering. The website says nothing about the strange breakfast arrangements or the fact that the establishment is unmanned at night. We will not be returning.
