This was my first visit to Meltham Fisheries, and the staff were really welcoming and friendly. I ordered a large fish with chips & peas, the portion size was huge. Given that I had a fair distance to travel home, the staff also wrapped my meal foil so that it stayed hot. At home the meal was still hot and the potion size was huge, the complete meal was high quality and cooked in my opinion to perfection. I really enjoyed the food, especially the fish which was huge. I will certainly be visiting this shop again in the future. I cannot fault the service and quality of the food.

I'd been in the local Optician and thought I'd try the local chippy for lunch, as a Lancastrian we miss out on the beef dripping so this was a rare treat. Beautiful fresh fish, thin crispy batter and tasty chips, lunchtime special a bargain at a fiver... I'll be back soon!

Outstanding taste and value for a lunchtime special .Chips cooked in beef dripping are so much tastier than by other methods - fish cooked to order - friendly service - and a regular customer bonus card too .We couldn't ask for more .

I have had a lot of fish and chips in my time as I travel for work. Im sorry to say that this was by far the worst fish and chips i’ve ever had. When unwrapped it, the batter from the fish was stuck to the paper in a big sludgy mess. The chips were overcooked, some were burned. And they also were just a pile of greasy slop underneath the fish.I am actually impressed at how well they managed to make such terrible fish and chips. Complete waste of money.

Got some fish and chips recently, after getting them home I peeled the soggy fish from the chips, losing the greasy batter in the process and put it on a plate. The fish batter was just a thin veil of grease around the fish, which was also greasy and tasted horrible. The chips were also soggy with black flecks, suggesting old oil. It was absolutely shockingly bad and ended up in the bin. It's not rocket science to make light crispy batter and half descent chips. No wonder why so many fish and chip shops are becoming extinct if this is the crap they serve.

Been here several times and the food is always great. Best fish and chips in Meltham by a mile. There are few fish and chip shops that really know how to cook chips. These people do.

I was driving through Meltham and wanted food before carrying on further. Cold sandwich was not good on a cold day. I had a smell outside the fisheries and seemed ok. Went in for a fish and tea cake known as a fishwich. Very nice will call again.

I am fortunate enough to live round the corner from this little gem. The fish & chips are delicious. You get ample portions for the cost. The ladies are adorable. Vonny who works behind the counter is quite a character. I adore her. She always serves the fish with humour and a cheeky smile.I eat here frequently and will continue to do so whilst I live in Meltham :) Well done team!

We thought we had tasted the best fish and chips when we moved from Hartlepool to Meltham......theses are even better! The fish is fried to order and the chips are excellent, give it a try.....

Generally the food is good. I understand the benefits to cooking to order, but the waiting time can be as long as twenty minutes,which puts me off coming in if I am wanting a quick tea on my way home.

Been to this fish n chip shop loads of times never been dissatisfied yet its an x army chef who has help prepare meals for royalty believe or not

I came here the other evening for some Fish and Chips and I must say they are the best I have ever had. Super friendly Staff and very chatty. I have had an Amazing time and did not wait long for my fish at all. Defo going to be back keep up the good work girls.

Visited on a tuesday afternoon, fish rubbery and old and bearing in mind it is shut on a monday, God only knows how old it was.Oil old, doesn't help when the shop is open in short stints.Greasy and horrible, shall not be visiting again, much better elsewhere in Huddersfield

We stopped towards the end of a glorious day in this very scenic area on an afternoon drive round Kirklees. We had fish and chips and ate them outside the shop in the sunshine. these fish and chips are some of the best we have tasted, not soggy or at all greasy, but crisp fried chips and the fish was really tasty with a thin layer of batter. as good as any at the seaside and we will definitely call next time we are round this way

Has potential to be a great chippy, with the previous owners everything was equally good everytime you went, now sometimes it's good and sometimes not so good, they need to get some consistency.

This rating is based on my earlier visit when the fish wasn’t bad and the chips were, by a long way, the best I have ever eaten, ever. Just like the best triple cooked chips in restaurants - crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfect. [tonight I just bought chips to go with something I’d prepared at home - sadly, disappointing - too fat (“hand cut?”) and not cooked enough; maybe just an off night...)

I’m not sure why but for some strange reason we went to a rival chippy in Holmfirth where the fish and chips there were average at best , so on a shopping visit to Meltham we decided to give Meltham Fisheries a try . We weren’t disappointed friendly staff in a very clean environment with lovely tasting fish and chips in generous portions . We’ve revisited several times now and every visit they’re always beautiful and just to our liking. Keep up the good work.

We were visiting my father for the weekend, and his regular routine is a fish butty on Friday evening. So we joined in, and had fish and chips for dinner.

We live in this village but always traveled a couple of miles to get decent fish and chips. After friends called in and recommend our local chippy we gave them a try and yes very good, nice sized fish ( although only haddock and pollock no cod ) good batter and the chips and mushy pea’s were better than our usual . We will save on petrol , well done Meltham Fisheries

Recently taken over the proprietors have introduced the use of beef dripping as their cooking fat of choice. Combined with the freshest of cod & haddock the quality and taste is excellent and well worth a visit!

I have been to this chippy nearly every week since lee took over.The fish and chips are all fried in proper beef dripping and taste wonderful.In regards to previous comments- the chips are not being reheated, they are being blanched to start them cooking, and fried to finish the crispy outside and soft inside.But to reinstate why im here, i love meltham fisheries and believe you should visit, given the opportunity.If theres a problem with your food, the staff are more than happy to re-do or refund, before you write bad reviews.

Staff are lovely but fish and chips poor. Fish beautifully filleted but bit raw in middle chips boiled in grease.

Didnt fancy eating in Durker Roods Hotel so went for a walk into Meltham and came across this place.Great friendly service, lovely chips.Well recommended.

By far the worst meal ever had, The fish was just dripping in grease, the chips were partially cooked, and not hot, Had I not taken them home to eat I would, have taken them back, TERRIBLE, would not use them again..1/10

Great fish butty, really nice chips. what surprised me is the fryer actually filleted the fish in front of us which just shows how fresh it was

chips that had been cooked were greasy and reheated in fryer before being served, will not ever go to this chippy as long as I live

We are very lucky in Meltham to have such lovely fish and chips. Always fresh and hot and the place is lovely and clean too.

Have eaten here several times during visits to the UK. Always a good feed. Fish chips and peas. Traditional English fayre at a very affordable price. If you have a hunger for food, and touring the area. Stop by and give it a go. A nice village with several pubs and eateries.

Have visited four times since new owners ...spot on every time , fish cooked to order , cracking portion ,light batter , a joy !These folks making a real effort, well worth a visit...enjoy !!!

Wow!! Had fish & chips from here last week and they were absolutely fab. The portion sizes were spot on. Fish was a great size, flaky & lightly battered. cooked to order so it wasnt sat in the heaters to go dry. The chips were lovely too not bitty or greasy. Staff were friendly. Will most definitely be returning here & last but not least they are not overpriced like a few of the other chip shops in the holme valley area.

Having had the best fish and chips in the area for about 3 years we thought we would give the new owners a try last night, wrong! We ordered our "usual" but found that the haddock was dry and over cooked, the chips were very "bitty" and a bit grey looking and the chicken nuggets were not proper chicken, tasted and looked like cardboard! (previous owners were very particular about their proper chicken nuggets) , and to top it all the price charged was about £4 more than we used to pay for the same order. So sorry to say we won't be getting our fish/chips and chicken nuggets from there again, but we wish the new owners well for the future.

As the shop has new owners I was advised to try them out, far better than the last owners I was informed. However the standard of the Fish Chips we received was far below our expectations, one fish portion even had two separate bits in to try and equal a portion, maybe we were unlucky. This shop certainly has a long way to go to equal my favourite fish shop on Manchester road which supplies freshly cooked succulent fish twice the size, accompanied by perfectly cooked crispy chips (unless of course you like them floppy & fatty) and also it's also cheaper. With the right materials cooking fish and chips is not rocket science, keep practising. I hate upsetting friends and throwing food away I have just purchased.

Not our usual chippy, but on occasions has been very good, depends who is in frying, as they have a habit of refrying fish the chips to keep them warm!

We are regular visitors to this wonderful little fish and chip shop, it is so great to find traditionally fried fish and chips. I can't eat fish and chips cooked in veg oil as they are too greasy and my mouth just feels full of fat, so these, having such light crispy, non- greasy batter are a God-send, please don't ever close or I won't be able to eat fish and chips any more. Also love that there is a choice of haddock, cod or coley as so many places now just serve coley or pollack as 'fish and chips' which are nowhere near as nice as haddock and cod :)

First class fish and chips in the centre of the village good friendly staff, however would like to see better opening hours

Sid Popped in for fish and Chips at Lunch time , They were enjoyed at the time, but for the rest of the day i felt like a record on repeat, Sorry Saturated fat don't agree with me. Price was good the t cake was nice, I agree with some of the other comments re touristy places in Holmfirth. Best fish and chips i have had in the area Harry Haywoods linthwaite.

If you like traditional fish and chips (the non greasey kind!) here is wonderful. I buy here a couple of times a week and I am never disappointed, the fish is the best anywhere, white thick fish not grey like yuo come across elsewhere and chips golden and crisp with soft insides (don't like hard chips!) Also went during Meltham 40's weekend and they were queuing down the street but still worth waiting for, can highly rcommend.

Visited this establishment today with fellow walkers, greeted by friendly staff and served within minutes of walking through the door. Great value, good quality fish and lovely thick chips-a must visit if you are in the area. Lots of choice, family deals and daily specials. I will be back.

Best chippy in the Holme valley and there are a lot of them!! friednly helpful staff and the best fish and chips you cna find. If visting the area seek this little place out as the quality of the food is far superior to the more expensive touristy chippies in the area especiall y in the centre of Holmfirth. Family deals make a day trip with the kids a really affordable treat.
