Max's Traditional Fish & Chips in Swale

Was good when it first opened but the chips are not good anymore and batter on cod is far too soft. People are friendly and helpful but chips definitely need improvement.

I won't buy fish and chips from another shop . Tried a few and they failed this is by far the best on the island . Good prices and very friendly staff .

Hubby picked up fish and chips last night whilst staying in the area for the night. I’m fussy with this sort of meal and was dubious with the 3 star rating on Google… however the food was absolutely delicious, cooked fresh, we thoroughly enjoyed so thank you!!

Avoid and take your money elsewhere. Poor chippy.

Was the start of the day for them, so the oil was a little cool, so the batter was a little bit oily, but still golden brown and crisp

Tried a few times. Never been great but local to me Last time I'm going though because saveloy had zero taste and didn't taste fully cooked. Chips are average to bad cod wet batter. Used to be good years ago?? also no opening times online? They just decided to put a piece of paper in the window?

This place used to be the best fish and chip shop around. Unfortunately it’s been going down hill recently. Had a batter sausage and chips. The chips were soggy and the sausage was like eating raw mince meat in a condom covered in grease. The staff are beyond miserable and both look like they can’t stand being there anymore. You used to get a slice of lemon with fish and offered a choice of vinegar. Now it’s slap dash. Shame. They did the building up nicely and then ruin it with poor service and corner cutting. Please change back to how you were last year.

"How long for a portion of chips? "we asked. "5 minutes", they said. OK, said my wife. While they started to cook six pieces of cod for someone else they set aside ALL the chips that were ready... instead of serving them to us. 15 minutes later they finally handed over to us a tiny portion of overcooked stale-smelling chips that wouldn't feed my child let alone a grown man. £3 for that. NEVER again. A small mandarin is added to the photo for scale. Mean as Scrooge, and far less customer friendly. As for running out of chips for 15 minutes... no properly run chippy EVER does that.

Edit: from 2 star to 4/5 star. Recently got chips/sausage & it was perfectly done! Much much improved finally

Unfortunately after driving to our usual 1st class chippy marinos in Sittingbourne the A2 was closed so decided to try this one, the chips were dreadful, tasted like they have been frozen and the battered sausage was dreadful,, couldn’t wait to get the taste gone, thank god we have marinos

smallest portion of chip s i ever had cost £3.00 I think I counted 36 chips and to add insult sauce was £1.20 normally40p in places not trying to rip you off ..I definitely won't return to this one thanks very much. shocking

Where do I start 15 minute wait for food a large sausage in batter that when I checked it was 2 small ones a LARGE chips 😂 I could have picked up more with one hand and at the price of £3.70 😮 only bonus is the cod I ordered is a fair size but this is a joke never again and I can’t get in contact with them no phone number anywhere 100% will go the extra mile to Queenborough next time

Omg it’s the best fish & chips I’ve had in a long time the fish was cooked fresh and cooked perfect and the quality of the sausages in batter were lovely can’t wait to get it again it was lovely 👍🏻😊everything was perfect 👍🏻Also we came down from London 👍🏻

I ordered 2 large Cod and large chips yesterday evening, it was cooked to order, the quality of the Cod was excellent, the fillet was really thick, cooked perfectly too, the chips were good too. I highly reccomend Max's

First rate! It would be fair to say that there are many fish and chip shops on the island and they're mostly all the same but this place really stands out. It says traditional on the sign and thats an understatement. Welcomed as I walked in and met with a smile. Questions answered and order taken. The food was served very quickly and presented very well. Thier choice of packaging meant that the food was still hot when I got home. Prices are good, more than good and the quality was fantastic. I liked that the meat was all butcher produced and not the usual store brand cheap meats that you would usually get at most places. The member of staff who served me was really genuine in his service and I left the place happier than when I went in. You know that feeling you get when you have just found your new favourite take out? I got that. I highly recommend the place and I will be back for sure. Thanks to everyone there. Great experience and great food.

My opinion has changed, the staff is extremely rude and the meals have lost it's charm, the greasy goodness, I quite enjoyed the decor but the short man at the front was really aggressive and treated me very poorly. Would not advise coming here unless they are gone and food is improved.

Had scampi and chips was SOoooooo nice …. Big scampi inside ! Lovely chips would highly recommend

Went here with my family to celebrate the passing of a family friend, Isaac, the staff was respectful, the food a work of art, the pie with fish in was bloody brilliant. I will be coming back here soon with Krispy. BOSHHH!

The fish was not fresh the chips well yeh lets stop there because the oil they used was old wont be going back there for sure

Is our nearest fish and chips , been many times , but just can’t get the chips right , Just don’t taste like traditional chips , they are like cardboard, normally underdone, or just funny tasting , fish it self okay, but batter soggy, such a shame as staff really lovely , place looks spotless and modern. We now go elsewhere 😢 hopefully will improve

Got served this beautiful piece of delicate art. I have to come back here in 5 years, it left me a nice after taste. too many homeless people in the area though, that wanted my beautiful food.

Don’t have a bad thing to say, some of the reviews don’t do it justice, really impressed by the large cod and chips, cod was huge and chips perfect, clean and very friendly staff.

Chips were greasy and my cod was squashed into box with a piece of lemon pushed into it, which I didn’t ask for and I hate lemons, so ruined my dinner - very disappointed. My sons asked for large battered sausages with their chips but they got 2 small ones each and the sausage was pink and tasted horrible! Sorry for bad review, hopefully Max’s will listen as shop itself looks really nice and clean and the lady serving was pleasant.

If i could put a lower star I would this used to be a great chip shop, i purchased 3 large portions of chips which came in a box and were RANK, GREEN ENDS, BLACK ENDS, Obviously been sat there far too long. could not even eat them, I am totaly apalled and I cannot even complain by phone as there is no phone number.

This used to be nice, it's not been opened for that long and everyone came out in their droves at first to try it out but the last half dozen of times we've had food from here it's been very hit and miss. My biggest complain is that the chips are never cooked properly and hard in the middle, happened everytime we've had food from here....I mean it's the one thing that people come for and if you can't get that right, you shouldn't be serving the food up to the public. I can see this place going the same way as the previous fish and chip shop went which was what the shop was before it became Max's Traditional Fish & Chips, that used to be lovely and then went downhill with horrible, undercooked and overcooked greasy food served up without care. I know this place isn't fine dining by any means, but you really need to sort this out as I'm not the only one complaining! I'd recommend either the Golden Fish bar in Queenborough or The Fisherman's Catch in Sheerness over this place.

Previously worked at Max’s Fish and chips shop however, when I questioned my pay politely as the owner didn’t pay me correctly I was fired on the spot because he supposedly ‘gave me an opportunity’ and I was only a ‘trainee’ and shouldn’t be questioning such things. He proceeded to get verbally aggressive and demanded I leave immediately. I would avoid working here as the owner will not pay you correctly and when you question you will be fired. Hostile, Aggressive and manipulative are the words I would describe Tinda (owner) who also owns the Londis next door.

Banging fish n chips but in my opinion they need to ditch the butcher's sausages and stick to the cheaper proper chip shop sausages. The butcher sausages are more for being grilled and just feel like they're boiled to eat when deep fried. Would probably be more kid friendly, popular and save you guys a couple quid 👍

18 Nov 12.15 ordered Cod Roe & Chips. The Roe batter was not brown & crispy, underneath it was under-cooked, pale & floppy. The Chips were again not crispy but hard & rubbery. After reading some reviews wondered whether to go here, but gave them a chance. However, the chef needs re-training how to cook decent batter. Would never go here again, and waste my money.

Don't normally do reviews but unfortunately the chips were terrible - asked for large sausage but got 2 small (wasn't told) & they were disgusting! This was from Friday afternoon

Shop looks great, the chips are brilliant and the curry sauce is better than you would get elsewhere. My cod was dry and a little overcooked and no salt or vinegar given despite being asked. The sign outside says "traditional", but they have new recyclable containers instead of Newspaper that would have been what I expect from "Traditional", I see this a good point but think that Traditional is the wrong word to have use. I will use again to see if the Fish still gets overcooked next time

Probably the best fish and chips in the world. Was cooked to perfection. Will come back.
