Sorry but everyone who has given this place 5 stars haven’t visited other pie n mash shops in London. Visited Thursday morning place was empty and I soon found out why. Pies tasted like pukka pies to much gravy as for the mash it was runny and bland liqueur was tasteless soup. Only reason it got 3 stars was the staff friendly and chatty. Bit of advice if you’re east of the Thames go to G Kelly’s Roman Road and if you’re Sarf of the river go Manzies Tower Bridge Road beats this place hands down. Oh and for double double and a bottle of water £9.20. Save ya money go elsewhere

As an indigenous East End cockney, no visit to the UK would be complete without a visit to a traditional pie and mash shop. I was raised on F. Cooke as a kid and when I moved south it was Manzies, or Arments and a few independents like Harringtons, Cockneys, Goddard, Kelly’s & B.J’s on my travels around London. Today on this visit it was the turn of Maureen’s pie & mash in Crisp St Market, Poplar as I’d read rave reviews and it didn’t disappoint and was well worth the slog across London and through the Blackwell Tunnel. Needless to say I walked away with a couple of pots of jelled eels for later as I was stuffed.

I've become a fan of pie & mash recently--such a hearty and good-value meal. I'm getting to the point where I can make comparisons; and will safely say that Maureen's pies are the best I've had so far. This type of pie is a simple affair--but they do differ; and Maureen's somehow seemed to have more mince in them and a richer and stronger flavour than ones I've had before. The mash and gravy were also spot on; and they even do an excellent cup of tea, a crucial detail. That isn't to say the atmosphere was the best. The cafe was nearly empty, and the serving ladies were holding a conversation with each other while treating me as if I wasn't there. A few weeks ago I'd been to Eastenders Pie & Mash round the corner, which felt such a friendly, vibrant place by contrast. Their pie & mash was great too; but Maureen's was even better, unless I've imagined it. I'll be back to both in future. So glad they keep the tradition going in this otherwise depressing concrete precinct which could do with a total rebuild, in my opinion.

Very busy shop, which says it all really. I don't know why people have made some disappointed remarks about the mash - our pies, mash and liquor were all first class today - served piping hot and at reasonable prices. We enjoyed our first visit there today and will certainly be back for more. Special thanks to all the lovely ladies serving and those out the back, who we could spot filling the pies - lovely to know it's all cooked on the premises.

The pies were burnt..... and really poor. The mash was as you'd expect it to be when it's mashed in the same water it was boiled in....and the liquor? Definitely just for the locals. Now, I wouldn't mind so much...but I get regular updates on Facebook about this establishment. I don't want them! I never did!! I think Maureen needs to stay away from a kitchen!

What can I say, being a life long Peckham boy it pains me to say this. But after years of using Arments on the Westmoreland Road SE 17 and Goddards at Greenwich but I've crossed the river and Maureens is my local pie and mash shop and it knocks both these off the top spot for me.Great light pastry on the pies, good flavour on the liquor, chilli vinegar that has a right punch to it just hits the right spot! I always get collared to pick up a load of take away for the old boys I know who can't get out for pie and mash theses days. The salt beef dinners or beigels also offer great comfort food and are worth a try if your a pie a phobic.Theres always a genuine warm welcome when you come in and its great to see Maureens serving customers from all the diverse backgrounds you see in Poplar, some with their new bourns in tow. Which gives me hope that the tradition of pie and mash will continue for many generations to come.

A few of us walked from our office in search of traditional east end pie, mash and gravy. Arrived at Maureen's where we were served the local liquor with our mash instead of gravy... yes it appears a little odd, but with a splash of vinegar it is surprisingly tasty. The pie choice is mince or mince. But that is the pure simplicity of the place. It was packed and for under £4.00 for a hot and wholesome lunch it is great value.Go try!!

I am so glad a friend of mine recommended this place. I was passing by every day and had never eaten there before. They have great english food/breakfast/brunch and their prices are even better. Portion are big and quality is superb. It can be easily missed because of the outdated decor and limited opening hours. But definetily worths a visit!

Recommended to try Maureen's pie and mash. We weren't disappointed. What a pleasure the staff were, so helpful and accommodating. The pies were best we had had in long time as always have pie and mash when visiting London. We even brought pies and liqueur home for our sons. We just couldn't leave without the salt beef sandwiches and bagel which again proved to be extremely delicious. We will be back. Thank you ladies for a great experience.

Since my Pie and Mash shop of choice closed in West Ham many years ago, have travelled far and wide trying to find something as good. Maureens is hands down the best Pie & Mash I've found, return as regular as I can over the last 10 years or so. If you can't get there that often, take home a bakers dozen & put em in the freezer. I did go to Manzies once, think that says it all :)

When I visit Italy, Greece or Spain, I try to avoid the obvious tourist eating places, and eat like the locals. Well, Maureen's is the place to go if you want to try East End local eating! Two mince beef pies, silky mash and liquor (parsley sauce to the uninitiated), a mug of tea (tell them if you don't want sugar), and change from a fiver! Their salt beef sandwiches are great, too, and less than half the price of West End places. White tiles, plastic tables, big bottles of malt vinegar. And if you are not a native East Ender, listen to the accents!

We booked a table for a special mid-week dinner at Rogues having been intrigued by the seasonal menu. The Restaurant is short walk from both Cambridge Heath and Bethnal Green, with such a humble edifice, that you can miss the entrance, as we did initially. We were seated by a wonderful waitress, who seated us in a wonderfully subtle restaurant, that had a chic minimalistic atmosphere. The menu presented to us was both interesting and varied in the flavour combinations. The menu is designed for diners to choose a number of small plates from which to share, which some may not be to some people's tastes. There are no starters at Rogues, instead these are replaced by "Bites", you will have to order one of each "Bite" per person. These were very well balanced and left us wanting to order more, but more importantly excited for the food to follow. I should also add that we chose to order from the a la carte menu, but there is a set menu available, which was very reasonably priced at £59 per person. "Bites" are then followed by the small plates main courses. We opted for the Sourdough with Bovril butter, Cured Sea Trout, Katsu Cod Collar, Barbecued Cabbage and Kimchi, and the Highland Rump. I believe the menu is seasonal and subject to change so these may not be available at the time of your visit. I enjoyed all of the dishes, but some of the flavours could be a little overpowering for some plates, although I really all of the dishes. Our personal favourites, were the Sourdough, which was incredibly light, the Cured Sea trout, which my wife loved, but I felt there needed to be more of the dill pickle to balance out the bitterness of the grapefruit, and the Katsu Cod Collar, which I really enjoyed but my wife, thought the flavours were too strong. From pricing perspective, we paid c. £60 per head with a glass of wine each, which for a fine dining experience is very good. I would highly recommend Rogues, for anyone who is really enjoys fine dining, the seasonal menu is unique, offers great variety for dinners at whichever time of year they chose to attend. I would rate it as 4.5/5.

I’ve have eaten at many Michelin starred restaurants all over the world in the past 20+ years. This place is next level. It is outstanding. What Theo is doing is complex and outshines even the most traditional Omakase style London giants such as Hannah, Endo and Roji. Whist I accept it is not purely Japanese. It takes the best of what the others offer and enhances every aspect with dishes that are more culturally diverse. This place is a must. What an experience.
