Mason + Rye in Newcastle upon Tyne

We attended backing workshop yesterday and both my daughters are vomiting now.. seems like they contracted Nora virus from the activity. I hope other kids are ok.

Hermosos colores brillantes de Mason + Centeno en Fenwicks - tan estéticamente agradable. Caro, pero sí, pagas por lo que obtienes. Vale la pena la experiencia que yo diría. Este lugar en Fenwicks está lleno de vida. Las cuppas que comimos estaban ricas, cremosas, con sabores encantadores 🔥 y los pasteles (¿fueron £ 7 por pieza? En algún lugar por allí) eran perfectos. Grita clase - y no es de extrañar que los clientes paguen de buena gana por la experiencia. La variedad de opciones es inmensa: dulce o salada, todo está ahí. Sin duda volveré para las ocasiones de celebración!

Beautiful bright colours of Mason + Rye in Fenwicks - so aesthetically pleasing. Pricey - but yes, you pay for what you get. Well worth the experience I would say. This spot in Fenwicks is buzzing with life. The cuppas we had were spot on - rich, creamy, with lovely flavours 🔥 and the cakes (was it £7 per piece? Somewhere around there) were perfect. It screams class - and no wonder customers willingly pay for the experience. The variety of options is immense - sweet or savoury, it’s all there. I’ll definitely be back for celebratory occasions!

Really disappointing experience. Visited Mason and Rye in Fenwick’s, Newcastle. Had two small scoops of salad and a 330ml can of fizzy pop. £11.95 ! Wow. I know businesses have to make a profit, but that’s taking the micky. I was wanting to pay in cash (given some notes over Christmas few days earlier) and had a £10 note ready, expecting a bit of change. But obvs I was £1.95p short. Had a rummage in my purse, every coin I had came to £1.85. 10p short. Asked the till operator if that would be ok - a solid “no.” Needed the extra 10p. So they made me break into another £10 note, for the sake of 10p. So I ended up with a tiny salad and a normal size can of pop, for the thick end of £12 !!! Actually ruined my day. Felt totally mugged. The salad was salad - nothing special or Gordon Ramsey about it. Throw in the till bit over 10p - dreadful. Despite being a regular in Fenwick’s, I will not be going back to Mason and Rye.

I drink a lot of coffee so I have a fair amount of experience and I can honestly say if you like to drink you coffee black you won’t be disappointed with an americano here!!!! Perfectly balance no nasty bitter after taste just a perfectly balance coffee.

Having been before, my husband and I called in for a take away. Despite being third in the queue it took 20 mins to get served. We couldnt actually see the food because of the que system. The guy (in between numerous conversations with other staff) gave us very vague descriptions of the savoury options available. Husband went with a turkey baguette. It was dry with minimal ingredients and tasted bland. I had two salads. The butternut squash was tasty but the chicken also bland. They were both on the small side and the bill was over £20 inc two sparkling water cans at £3 each for 330 ml. Overall not good value for money and slow service. Wouldn’t go back. Must say, cakes looked great!

Come every year to Fenwick’s always have tea and cake in Mason and Rye. Friday 15th Nov ordered tea and coconut passion fruit, the slice was minuscule it was changed for a better slice but still small not value

Just had a great lunch at Mason and Rye. A fantastic choice of salads with a decent glass of wine. The aubergine with pomegranate and chimichurri broccoli were excellent! Good quality coffee to finish. Service is always good here but a big shout out to Marc who we noticed engaged with customers (Inc their young kids) really well, whilst being super efficient at clearing tables in a no nonsense way, dealing with spilled drinks (not his fault) and pre tempting disaster with minimal fuss. We'll be back!!

Always pop in if I’m visiting in Newcastle RVI as a treat. Staff are friendly and efficient. Cakes are to die for. Best cappucino. Marc the server went above and beyond today to help resolve a minor hiccup, after chatting with him how could I not single him out, friendly courteous and gives amazing hugs , thank you Marc.

Dean made us a delicious PSL, and the food was also delicious :) we come regularly with family and it won’t be changing anytime soon

Brilliant place for patisserie/cake and coffee. Absolutely delicious treats and really nice drinks too. It's also a very baby friendly place. Big shout out to Mark- such great service and such a lovely friendly gentleman!

I have to say I have used the cafe on many occasions, however today Marc was amazing he helped my daughter to a seat as he saw she was struggling on crutches. Fabulous smile and a great asset. Loved his smiley face thanks Marc you made my visit perfect!

Popped into Mason and Rye for a quick coffee and bite, and while the coffee was good, the real highlight of our visit was Marc, our server. He was so friendly and welcoming! I had family visiting from the States, and Marc went out of his way to give us some great recommendations on things to do and try while they were here. He really made the whole experience feel relaxed and comfortable. If you're looking for a nice spot to grab some food with excellent service, I’d definitely recommend Mason and Rye!

Fuimos a Mason and Rye para darle a nuestra hija de 5 meses su biberón, ella estaba muy malhumorada y en las prisas al café nos dimos cuenta de que habíamos dejado las toallitas de bebé en el coche durante un golpe de bebé! Lo que habría sido una carrera estresante a otra tienda con un bebé llorando, fue rescatado por el miembro del personal Marc. Corrió a la parte de belleza de Fenwick para conseguirnos unas toallitas sensibles para usar para cambiar a nuestra pequeña, honestamente salvó el día jaja. Disfrutamos de dos rebanadas de delicioso pastel y dos cafés y nuestro bebé incluso se durmió, que fue un placer jaja. No podía pedir un mejor servicio, Marc fue más allá para nosotros. Heroico, especialmente para nosotros los nuevos padres. ¡Un mérito para el lugar!

Tuvimos un almuerzo ligero de ensaladas mixtas y un bollo de queso. Las ensaladas eran particularmente buenas, aunque el bollo era muy agradable también. Incluyendo el té llegó a unos £ 10 por cabeza, que era justo para la alta calidad.

Popped in for a light lunch with a friend and was taken aback by the excellent food and service. Marc served us and was so helpful as my friend is Vegan, nothing was a bother to him, he is a credit to Mason and Rye and so friendly. Will certainly be back and will recommend to my friends.

Had a lovely lunch at Mason & Rye yesterday. Opted for the Chicken and Avocado Baguette with the roasted Salmon side salad and a pot of tea. All freshly made and really tasty. Great atmosphere and service provided by Marc. Would highly recommend.

Used to love popping in here but honestly it’s a nightmare now! Food is always lovely but the staff either don’t know what they’re doing or don’t care. Waited for 15 mins to get our coffees and when we got them they were wrong. Lady in front of me had been waiting longer as they offered to take her stuff to the table and didn’t. Another customer was waiting for her drink and had to ask 3 or 4 times saying it would be cold. Won’t be going back as for the price it’s not worth the hassle

All good apart from the thumping club music in the seating area, which was entirely inappropriate for the lunchtime clientele, whose average age must have been at least 65. Surely something more mellow and chilled would have been more suitable.

Myself and my partner visited today for a coffee and to feed our 5 week old. We would like to leave this review for Marc, who helped us so much today as we had a mishap with our Daughter. He didn't have to be so helpful and caring but he went the extra mile to make sure we had everything that we needed. Thank you so much. We need more people like Marc!

Agree with the reviewer before me. Gone for years, but it’s changed. Used to offer decent protein component (grilled chicken, salmon or cauliflower cake) with salad selection, now it’s dwindled to just salad - cost cutting that saves them, but it’s now a rip off. Also, the flatbread was awful - hardly any filling, basically bread, with scraped pesto and scantly grated tasteless cheap “mozzarella”. Attitude from a waiter. Won’t be back in a hurry.

Ordered a celebration cake for a family members 50th birthday, the quality of decoration and taste was absolutely incredible. Very easy to order online and upon collection staff were so lovely- could not recommend enough!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We are here at least 4 times a week at our favourite corner table. Coffee is excellent we vary between scones and sourdough bread, both are tasty. Stef Terry and all of the staff are like a second family always there for a chat. I enjoy watching the cakes being made the staff behind scenes do a great job too. The place is always clean as the staff very efficient

If you advertise on here you close at 17:00… and it’s 15:50 on a Sunday and I can’t order a cake slice to takeaway… say you close at 15:50 on Google.

We ordered a flat white and a cappuccino. The cappuccino was fine but the flat white was as hot as lava. It was so bad it blistered my tongue and particularly of lip. Several minutes later once i was able to actually form a sentence I returned the drink to the counter asked for water and advised them of the scalding temperature. The girl who had served me was quite dismissive, offered no apology and asked if I wanted another... er no thanks! There was an older man who was a bit more concerned and did offer an apology. I am not sure why the milk in the flat white was scalding hot but the customer service was luke warm at best! Shame because it's usually okay but they need to better train their staff how n9t to make coffee.

I asked them to change my order as it contains ham and they did it immediately without any extra charge. However, food was not as I expected.

If there is a better carrot cake available to buy in Newcastle I’ve yet to find it after a lot of looking! I always end up comparing to the carrot cake at Mason & Rye in Fenwicks and wishing I’d gone there instead. It’s absolutely delicious, a perfect balance of moist carrot cake and walnuts and a not too sweet cream cheese frosting. So yummy!

10 minute wait for 2 cold soups and a view of cobwebs hanging from the ceiling lights. What a joke. And for those kind of prices? Never again.

We’ve had some great experiences here in the past but today has been a real stinker. Stood in the queue asking for our food felt somewhat like being back at school being served by the dinner nanny’s. We we’re a hassle for them to deal with, the two older women in particular - rude and unhelpful. Food came out, policy has changed and instead of a full piece of salmon, a meagre salmon salad or chicken salad is on the menu with a tiny piece of meat. My salad had a huge corner chunk of lettuce in it, and the rice was still hard. Not good enough.

Very disappointing. Been coming here for years and have always enjoyed a great lunch. Portions have been getting smaller but today was ridiculous, £11.00 for a small salad with “chicken” 3 tiny pieces in reality. Prosciutto flatbread literally bread and a slice of ham. Of course we appreciate the cost of ingredients has increased but management need to rethink the menu it’s not the quality and value Mason & Rye used to deliver consistently.

Too much going on with the prawn baguette, my gosh never had so much tarragon in my life! Overpowering almost left it but I was so hungry! Completely overpowering , which is a shame as the cakes are usually delicious but dry this time!

I popped in for a lovely sandwich and chai latte. I was greeted by the friendly manager who explained the menu to me and I had heard the chain latte was special so I opted for that and an experimental sandwich- prawn and tarragon with a lovely filling. I wasn't disappointed. The chai latte had just the right amount of spice and the sandwich. I was also given a complimentary small cake which had been prepared due to the fact I had arrived later than lunch but earlier than tea. It was a yummy cupcake with cream. All in all a lovely visit to Mason and Rye I'll definitely go back and take a friend or family.

We popped in for lunch whilst out shopping. The service was excellent, especially Stef who served us both times ( we went back for cake and she did not make us queue again) . The staff went out of their way to produce food that my friend with multiple intolerance's could eat. I enjoyed my salad though I think I made a few bad choices in terms or my selection. The chocolate/coffee mousse cake was however one of the best cakes I have ever tasted. Although it was £6.95 ( so a little on the pricey side) I enjoyed every mouthful!

Went yesterday with a gift voucher ordered and had food to be told at the till vohcher could not be accepted as they had new tills felt really embarrassed as food taken from us and told we could use voucher in the Terrace restusrant. So off we went exactly same thing ordered food not half as nice as mason and rye told we couldnt use voucher as it was not mason and Rye. By this time we were doubly embarrassed people in the queue looking at us however amember of staff tried to help and we got some food. What should have been a lovley experience as it was a gift ended up in tears. Did ring Fenwicks to complain spoke to a duty manager from beauty said she would get manager from food hall to contact me nothing so far NOT GOOD ENOUGH FENWICKS WE WON'T BE BACK. M Dunton

Mark was out waiter at Wednesday March 13 in the afternoon. And he was extremely friendly and went the extra mile. Super friendly and made us feel very welcome. Such a guy you want to meet! He made our day,

You have to pick your choice of food to order first then after payment find a seat to settle. Food is brilliant and desserts are delicious 🤤. Great place definitely a must try!

Waited 20 mins for eggs on toast. Cafe had 7 customers in. Staff quite rude when asked how long would it be! We come all the time. Never an issue before. The lady manager in blue suit is always lovely.

We ordered a slice of the tiramisu cake but disappointed to find a human hair on the plate (lodged between the cake and the plate). I took the plate of barely half eaten cake back to make them aware of this. No apology given whatsoever. If I were in their position, I’d be horrified that a customer has pointed out a lack of hygiene and would do anything to put things right. Didn’t get the impression they were the least bit bothered if I’m honest. I asked for another slice which, being the last slice on the plate, was half the size of a normal slice. I declined it and asked for a refund.

Do not get the cakes to take away!! I spent £30 on cakes for a special occasion got them home to find the girl who serverd me hadn’t secured the cakes down properly to find them all mashed up in the box once opened.

My wife and I have visited M&R (in Fenwicks Newcastle) for many years and always enjoyed the food and drink we have had. Today 18/12/23 was very poor indeed. My wife had a Ham Baguette which she had had on many previous visits and enjoyed. Today the baguette was smaller than usual, the ham was processed ( all previous visits carved cooked ham was used) and very scarce In the baguette. I had a fruit scone which was not fresh. Finally we had a Brownie which has now been made almost half the size they used to be. It seems like so many other food outlets Profit has taken over from quality which is so very disappointing. I do hope senior management can review these comments and duly consider the reasons why M&R have reduced both high standards and quality Regards PL

Been coming here since early 2019, the cakes always have me running to the food hall anytime I go into Fenwicks. Coming here at Christmas is always a treat, and there’s always a wide range of different and beautiful desserts here that can be enjoyed sat down or taken away. The staff are always lovely too.

We are regulars to the “corner table”, and are delighted to spend our day here, having breakfast… porridge with honey to start… followed by morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea… The staff are delightful, so friendly and welcoming…especially Stef who manages this great team… and lovely Julie, who always has a chat and a smile. The foods available are s feast for the eyes, and a true treat to the tastebuds… nutritious and delicious! Don’t leave without tasting a patisserie…or two!

Got two cakes sliced cake.and lemon meringue. Service a bit slow. Lady rushed boxing them sadly didn't put the sticker on the box handle for the lemon meringue so it ended up falling onto the floor when box out down as nothing closing the boxes, the way they are made of you don't seal with the sticker they just fall open. Did look nice though sure it would have tasted good

It's inside Fenwick it's a coffe and cake shop they have some really nice looking cakes it's a little up market it's lively little busy you just order what you want at the counter and then take it to your table it's not really table service just wanna thank them for giving me a class of milk as I didnt fancy anything else Thank you

Called in for lunch with something fresh and different on our minds. We shared the butternut squash and chargrilled broccoli salads plus a prawn baguette for a bit of protein. The broccoli was delicious! The others good but at the end of the meal I asked about the ingredients of our favourite salad- not only did the staff seek out the information but chef, Gary, wrote down all I needed and shared the prep method with me! Will be going again. And again!

Where is the customer service! Rude RUDE staff, how do you allow this - premium prices but can’t back it up with your staff. I was shocked and embarrassed when I arrived at 545pm (website for this store states 6pm close) to purchase 12 of your cakes for a dinner party to have a member of your team screech at me that “we’re closed” odd…. Lots of cakes still on display! You’re about to lose a regular customer!

WAY over priced....wanted a sandwich but were't available till 11'30.... I had 5 min till then, ok I'll wait....and waited and waited...25 min to be exact. Had finished coffee, which was only warm to start with. Had to take away as I could't hang around any longer. Nice friendly staff and nice and clean. Just not quick enough when we're all so busy. Definitely be swerving here next time sorry

Excellent choice of food, very clean environment. Staff are friendly and patrol the floor regularly maintaining the eating area. Service is quick and the food is delicious. Good variety cater for Vegan, Vegetarian and Carnivores. Great selection of cakes.

Food is very nice but the blonde-haired server with glasses has a very rude manner about her. She was talking about me to the guy at the till and was accusing me of pushing in. I know how to queue and asked for my order immediately after the couple ahead of me. There's no way I could have 'jumped in' unless they made a mistake. She was also rude to the couple ahead of me.

First visit but most certainly won't be our last! Food , Restaurant and staff were fab

Lovely cakes in mason and rye but the one star is because we noticed a male worker having what looked like an argument with a female member of staff in the glass booth. We couldn't hear what he was saying but he was very animated and aggressive towards the female worker who was standing in the glass booth and looked quite upset. It took away from the happy atmosphere and shouldn't happen in front of customers.

Found in the food hall at Fenwick. Lovely sarnies and cake for brunch with americanos. Tables were quickly cleared and cleaned.

Fab lunch time place ~ lots of great choice with friendly staff. Seating area could be bigger as queues build up during peak times, but don't let that deter!
