Masala Club in Mid Sussex

Another disastrous service too far which means we are unlikely to visit the restaurant again. Our booking last night was a mirror image of the poor service we experienced only a couple of months ago with the same lame apology and measly 15% discount . We waited 1.5 hours our mains to arrive with no communication or offering of drinks. Just made to sit there whilst others were getting served their food before us. We chatted to the smarmy arrogant manger after the meal who blamed it on them “being busy”. Not our problem mate. We would have gone elsewhere if told of the wait time. And considering we had exactly the same experience and lame apology previously you’d think they staff would have kept us sweet, but they didn’t. The manager gives it the swanky demeanour but he’s in house management attention/ customer care is less than zero and that goes for the whole staff. That may be proved by a narky response to this review.

Booked easily online Tables were very close together but restaurant nice and clean. Food was delicious! Lovely presentation. Service a little rushed but waiting staff friendly. Good value for money.

Visited with parents on a Tuesday evening for the special night. Ok ordering, I asked which items were gluten free - neither the waitress, waiter or manager were very clear which items contained gluten and the type of flour used in the dishes. If you have a serious food allergy, I would think twice about visiting here. Disappointed by tasteless chicken curry (more like sauce from a supermarket jar). Rest of our meal was nice enough. As part of the “deal” you are entitled to a coffee but no one asked or offered us one. When we asked for the bill and wanted to leave by this point, we mentioned that no one had asked us if we wanted anything else, or wanted a coffee and were told that we should have asked ourselves. I’ve not been to any other restaurant where a customer needs to ask, usually someone would come over to check everything is okay and ask if we would like anything else. When we asked for the bill, we asked if we could take home some of the curry that was left. The bill came and we were charged £2.25 for the containers. I’ve never been to another restaurant where a charge has been made for these. It would have been courteous to let us know there would be a charge for these first. Given we hadn’t had a great experience throughout, we asked to speak to the manager to give some feedback. The waitress told us he wouldn’t come over to our table. We asked again. He came over and was clearly disinterested in what we had to say. He did though remove the £2.25 container charge from the bill, rather rudely and dismissively though. We will not be returning. Far better curry houses in BH and surrounding area.

Went on a Tuesday evening when they do a special menu and deal. Restaurant was about half full with 3 waiting staff on duty. Menu was very well presented and explanatory. We asked for a jug of cold water. It arrived tepid with no ice or lemon. Our food order was eventually taken and arrived in a timely manner. However there was no conversation from the waitress or waiter. We guessed the waiter did not understand English at all as we asked questions but he did not appear to understand? We asked for a chutney tray but it did not come so asked another waiter who was dismissive just saying she doing it. (then when we got our bill we were charged for 2!) The mixer platter starters was delicious and all our mains were good too. 3 of us used the toilets and we all felt although clean they looked shabby with rusty bins etc. What let the place down most was lack of welcoming chat with the staff during the service of the meal and as we left. The other Indian restaurants that we frequent are far more welcoming from the minute we walk in the door!

Gone rapidly downhill. Never expected great things from this restaurant but the food has always been edible. Last Friday was a complete disappointment. Meat that tasted like the sauce had been tipped over it instead of marinade, potatoes (watery), rice greasy. Would not waste my time driving to this restaurant again unless the chef is changed.

Our booking was for 17:30 and we had to wait for 5mins outside as they didn’t open on time. Food was clearly warmed in a microwave and tasted bad. First time and last time going back. Shame really as I wanted to find a nice Indian.

This is the best place i’ve ever visited! definitely worth way over 5 stars, staffs are friendly, food is absolutely outstanding in my whole life, i’ve never had an amazing experience just like this.

have to agreed with other reviews , the Malsa has gone down hill in my view , the food portions are not what they used to be and lack previous good taste and the staff need to smile a bit ! we were regulars but have found a better value Indian in Burgess Hill now so we go there now , such a shame because this was always one of the best !

Pretty average at best, restaurant was a wee bit chilly & our Mum & my wife kept their coat on, one of our starters (the sheek kebab) was a little overcooked & not overly well presented with a meagre side salad & no yogurt sauce. Main course was OK but to be honest it all just lacked its old sparkle. We used to be very frequent diners here but somehow it just seems to have lost its edge. What was once the best Indian (there’s not that many) in a very desolate Burgess Hill the food mostly just seemed to be quite bland. The highlight was the vegetable samosas which were lovely but those alone will not hasten a return. I understand that Covid has many businesses hard so I would have thought that they would try to encourage customers back with a spot on Indian experience, but sadly not this time & so next time we will reach out to an alternative venue

Went with parents when visiting from Bristol. Prawn puree starter was nice but other starters were pretty mean on portion size and king prawn butterfly was overcooked. Korai was very bland and motor paneer had only 3 tiny cubes of paneer and was so sweet I think they must have tipped loads of sugar in. To be fair the dhansak was good. When I was asked if I'd finished (because virtually all of the motor paneer was untouched) I pointed out how bad it was and that there was virtually no actual paneer in it...they just shrugged and said that's how they did it! They even charged extra for mint sauce to go with the onion bhaji which were tiny, dry and overcooked. The best thing was the wine.

Booked a table for tonight (7 March) for 3, girlie catch up. Arrived at 7.30pm as booked and hey presto it’s CLOSED!!! Notice on door saying kitchen refurbishment closed from 6th March! Would have been nice if they could have called to let me know!!!

The only good thing about this place is the food. The staff are rude had no manners. Felt rushed when they were taking our orders. When the food arrived they handed one of the curries to my mum without telling her that it was hot she burnt her hand, I was going to say something but she told me not to. Such a shame that the staff are not trained properly and have no people skills otherwise I would be returning as the food was lovely.

Well what can I say...no free Poppadom, but we did get free hairs in the rice ! Also the nan bread was tiny ! Not sure what's happened with this restaurant as previously nice. Shall.not be using again

Just returned from an amazing meal with my husband. The service was great and the food was lovely! The food tasted so fresh. I like the fact that you can see the herbs and spices in the sauce.

I was with my friends to eat and drink but when I saw the food only I drink. The food is unsafe and fake. All spaces where is preparated and keep the food is very dirty.

I am not local to Burgess Hill, but we visited with friends who were recommended the Masala Club. The food was absolutely outstanding, the best I've had for a long time (and I eat lot of curries!). There are plenty of Covid measures in place, including hand sanitiser, all of the staff are wearing gloves and masks or shields. The food was absolutely delicious, my vindaloo was so flavoursome. My husband had the tikka masala and he doesn't normally enjoy curries as much as I do but he was thoroughly sold. We will be coming back again, it's worth the half hour drive!!!!!

Great value, friendly and efficient staff. All the curries were full of flavour and a real treat. Tuesday is now the new Saturday, a great atmosphere in these difficult times. If you love your curry this is a must.

We’ve recently discovered Masala Club - what a great find! Having moved to the area just over 7 years ago, and loving Indian cuisine, we set about finding a new local restaurant/takeaway. After a fair bit of research and tasting, we settled on our favourite place and have been regulars for 6 years since. However, sadly but understandably, they recently found it necessary to temporarily close due to Covid-19.So, back to the research for a replacement and Masala Club has really impressed. We’ve had three takeaways from there over the last couple of weeks, starting with our regular dishes for comparison, and everything has been delicious. The chef of course has his own style, but the quality is every bit as good as the restaurant we have been very loyal to - and that is a great compliment.The cost is slightly more (our other restaurant did a 10% discount on takeaways), but value for money is still good because we’ve noticed that the standard sized containers for main and side dishes are a bit more generously filled - bigger portions! They’re also clearly being very careful to follow social distancing measures for takeaway collections.Overall we have no hesitation in recommending Masala Club very highly. I understand they opened about 4 years ago (i.e. after our original consumer tasting research). Once we’re getting over Covid-19 I think we’ll now face a dilemma over split loyalties...

Group of us came tonight for dinner, a meet up after months of not seeing each other. A Table was nearby of immature chav lads shouting and swearing and causing a scene, clearly Wetherspoon clientele. We asked waiter to calm their table down few times, few tables round us complaining about noise and shouting And bad language from the chav lads table. Waiter told us, he not bothered about bad trip advisor reviews, as he's got our money. I told him, he had terrible attitude, he said, he's got our money, and strugged his shoulders. No offer of discounted meal. With tiny businesses like this closing quickly on the high street, his attitude was absolutely disgusting, unprofessional and clearly not bothered in slightest. Indian food is much of a muchness, this establishment has no customer service, no professional manner and training what so ever. Food was ok, but service made this evening a total disappointment and disaster. The 4 chavs were shouting at the lady on our table, telling our whole table to go outside for a fight. The waiters are not bothered. As one pointed out. They in it for money. Do you want to give this awful place your money? Do they deserve your money? The waiter told us, hes not bothered! Plenty of indian restaurants, they turn a penny.this place don't care.

Group of us had a lovely meal last Saturday, we can't fault the service either but we were disappointed to be charged £4.50 for a pint of lime cordial and soda water. We had had 5 between the 3 of us so it turned into an expensive night. We queried the price with the waiter and were told it is classed as a soft drink.

Had dinner here last weekend and had no idea this place existed! Really enjoyed the food and my family agreed! Will definitely return. The dhansak was delicious!

This is the best curry restaurant we have ever been too, the food is exceptional, the service second to none, food is always hot and received in good time and is always a friendly greeting when you arrive. If you want a great restaurant then this is the one to go too and by far the best in burgess hill

The service was good, quite fast. The waiters were friendly and helpful. The food was good, fresh and tasty. We approciated the mix of different tastes. It.s close the train station. Excellent value.

On arrival I explained that I’d made a reservation on line earlier and received confirmation although the email didn’t show any details. The man at the desk suggested that I had in fact booked somewhere else. When I showed him the email he reluctantly agreed that it was in fact a correct booking. It turned out that that he did have space and did have our reservation. All of this took place without a greeting, apology or smile. The next customer service contact as we were shown our table was equally unfriendly and unprofessional. I asked for a glass of house rose and was told I could only have a bottle until I showed the glass option in the drinks menu. From the point of ordering the meal (with someone different) things improved and the meal and service were very satisfactory. Disappointing start but tasty meal at a reasonable price.

Visited on Tuesday night which is also their Banquet Night! Good vibe as plenty of people in there. Drinks offered straight away and poppadoms with the usual accompaniments. Think it was the manager who took our order who was very unwelcoming and unhelpful. The waiting staff are friendly enough though. We both had the banquet which are smaller portions than the main menu but plenty of food so we didn’t go hungry. Food was very tasty and if you like garlic then it’s even better(we do) so thats why i would rate the food higher. Service is ok but you have to ask for more drinks as the staff are inattentive. Will be back again!

Came here with a group for dinner. Had great mixed starter (Samosa, bhaji, kebab & tikka pieces), Naga chicken- excellent spicy curry & snowflake desert. Food was great (although garlic naan was too garlicky!) Service was slow, didn’t check if we wanted drinks between long waits and missed couple of bits ordered. Maybe best for takeaway.

There is always something about a busy Indian restaurant which feels customers with confidence. Food and service are always very good but if you are intending to visit, especially on a Friday or Saturday then booking is essential. Very easily done online or by phone.

We’ve been to the Masala Club on previous occasions and never had any reason to complain. However, the same cannot be said for our last visit. The food .... that was OK. But the level of service we received from the staff was absolutely dreadful. It’s a shame, but due to their poor attitude - we definitely won’t ever be returning here.

Reserved a table at the Masala club for a birthday dinner. The food is average, the waiters are very attentive but the thing that was the most disappointing was the atmosphere... there was NONE!! There was no music, no lighting you could practically hear and touch the person on the table next to you..This is ok if you are a group of lads going for a curry before a night out but don't expect a quiet, relaxing evening as you really wound get this.Much better to collect and use as a takeway.

The Masala Club had been chosen for our annual club meal, and having not eaten there before, was looking forward to a good night.Knowing that what was being provided was a buffet, I expected rows of containers of food to help yourself to, but there was no evidence of that - so went with the flow.We all sat down at the tables, chatting away and eventually got served our starters. These were little tasters of various items, tasty and hot.More chatting ensued, and became aware of the disorganised chaos that ensued with the main courses being served. Some of the group appeared to have half their meals, others had finished before others had started.I take on board other peoples comments on here of the good service they experienced, but unfortunately sadly lacking last night.Add to that the astronomical price of drinks, large [house] white wine, G & T plus small Diet Coke [probably a mixer to] and less than £1 change from £20.The food was really tasty, but the service was poor, and as it had been booked for months, they should have been able to cope.In summary - really nice food, but that's not enough to bring me back - sorry, but there are others that offer better locally.

This restaurant is consistently good, with an extensive menu to suit all tastes. It is always well frequented with a good atmosphere if a little on the noisy side, but rather that than a quiet morbid atmosphere. The service is reasonably quick but is reliant on the small kitchen where the food is freshly cooked and space dictates the throughput. Strongly recommended for a traditional curry meal and we will certainly return.

Went there for a birthday meal with my family & the staff were so friendly and welcoming! Excellent food, best in burgess hill I’d say... not to mention how promptly it came. Waiters were very attentive which is always good and they even gave me a special birthday dessert which I thought was really lovely Will be returning for sure and would definitely recommend!

Came here with 10 of my friends and we had the best time and Indian food ever we tried! Good service , quick and efficient.(they were very friendly tho) We loved the place as is very big and spacious. Can’t complain and back again for sure !

Went here with friends for an evening. As with other reviews service is very quick and staff very attentive but did find this a bit too much. Plates being whisked away before we had finished and must have tried to take our order every 30 seconds when we said we weren't ready. Felt like they wanted us out to get another booking in so not very relaxing. Food was average. If you want fast food this is the place to go! just wasn't for us. Coffee machine broken, ordered a tea and got a cup with a tea bag in..

I was sceptical about visiting this restaurant as I have been going to my 'usual' for the past 15 years. However, I was more than pleasantly surprised. The staff were very polite and except for trying to rush my friend through her poppadoms in order to put her starter on the table I couldn't complain. The food was excellent - it was served well, hot and extremely tasty. The prices are quite reasonable and I would certainly visit again. Infact thought it was so good that ordered a takeaway Friday night for six and again certainly did not disappoint. Will return!!!!

My second visit, thought I’d give it a second chance. Not a great Indian restaurant. Staff make you feel uneasy, constantly walking around and looking at you whilst eating.My starter was inedible but was taken off the bill as I’d hardly touched it. ( tandoori chicken ) undercooked, tough and unpleasant.Service far too quick, still finishing one course and the next one arrives. Staff not very friendly to the point of surly.Toilets absolutely filthy. Main course was delicious and very reasonably priced, all in all I would not go back based on the above.Had better Indians in better surroundings in burgess hill.

Came here for my birthday with family for the Tuesday Banquet.They were struggling with how busy they were, but it was worth the wait!Some of the best Indian food I've ever had. Everyone enjoyed their meal and it was a slow walk home.And they are only a 5 minute walk away, dangerous!

This was the first time I have visited so as I had heard good things, I thought I would give it a try. Very good value for money on the banquet night but unfortunately, the quality wasn't as good as others I have tried. This may have been down to it being absolutely packed because it was a Tuesday banquet night. The curry I ordered had no chillies on the menu but I had to ask for yogurt to cool it down. Might be a one off so would try again to see

Ordered online very easy, gives you a clear indication what time to collect. Food was ready to collect at time specified no hanging about. Really hot and very tasty. Would recommend dine in & takeaway. Staff really friendly.

- very small starters, no value for money, average taste - had to wait over 1 hour 10 mins for food despite restaurant being pretty much empty - intimidating staff, what appeared to be the manager walked around with hands in his pockets awkwardly standing at tables while other staff did their jobs - claim a 5 course meal: although food nice, starter was v small, main was nice, you only get to choose rice or naan as another course, nice side dish and only option of coffee for last course - nice food but extremely poor service

I went here with my family this evening. We left half way through our meal. Let me divulge...Now, iv eaten currys all over for the best part of 30 years so I'd like to think of myself as a good judge of cuisine .This , by no stretch of the imagination is the worst curry experience me and my family have had.The dansak was by no means authentic , tasted like something you'd get out of asda.The garlic chilli chicken was weak, tasteless and the garlic was burnt.The meat, chicken and lamb was tough as anything.And to top it off, we had to wait 1.5hours!! Yes ! 1 and a half hours for this dross to arrive.The only thing that was decent was the papadoms and starters , so we were all disappointed with all the mains and again yes, all the mains.They took the drinks off the bill as a token of good nature as by hell we let the waiters know why we were leaving half way through..So to reiterate It's within the bottom 3 bracket worst curry houses in burgess hill.We will Never go again, you can't cock up a useless quizine to that extent to warrant a second chance, no way.End.

Popped in for a quick evening bite in between taxiing the progeny around and had a delightful experience. Service was quick and efficient especially as we were walk-ins on a busy Saturday night. They were very accommodating and wanting to please; something that many other places don't seem to do these days. My wife, who's a 'korma girl' but has been trying spicier dishes, asked for a butter chicken but with medium heat. And it was excellent - she loved it! Thoroughly enjoyed our hour there; it is definitely our 'go to' Indian in Burgess Hill now.

First thing they should do is buy another iPad for taking orders, takes ages for the man in leather trousers to take your order. Or go back to the old fashioned paper ordering system so you can all take orders My partner is dairy intolerant so he had one suggestion only.It’s nice to see the chefs cooking which is a nice touch.I think it does well because of location

So strange to read another review that captures our thoughts exactly. Out local Indian restaurant had become utterly boring and service deteriorated. What a breath of fresh air at Marsala Club. Great service and yes differentiated curry dishes that are distinctive and interesting. Absolutely restored our faith and we will visit again next time we are in Burgess Hill. It was busy for very good reasons. A good night out.

Visited here with friends for an evening meal. Great atmosphere and very busy mid week. Excellent service and the food was served in reasonable time. We shared several dishes so were able to enjoy many tastes. All were delicious. We will be back.

Found this restaurant on google & researched it on trip advisor. My starter & main were really nice in fact one of the best I have had in West Sussex for a long time and I know when I get a good one ! Will be back very soon

Was a lovely meal, which we enjoyed at leisure. The restaurant is very large and open, so being busy, was not a problem. Drinks were priced well. Certainly recommend.

We weren't rushed into ordering our meal and allowed to enjoy our pre-dinner drinks and poppadums in peace, despite the restaurant being very busy. Our meal was brought to us when we indicated we were ready and it was absolutely first-class. Can't praise the food enough and complimentary chocolate with the bill was a nice touch. I only wish they delivered locally as well because you don't always want to go out. Maybe you could consider home delivery - you will certainly get calls frmo me!!! Many thanks.

After reading the reviews we decided to try a take away from here but were left a bit underwhelmed. The food was quite tasty but the portions were very small. Nan bread was no bigger than 6" round, the onion bhaji were smaller than golf balls and my chicken curry was filled out with more potato than chicken. The other dishes we ordered were ok portion wise but needed more flavour. Would not hurry to try again.

Can’t recommend the Masala Club more, a great recommendation from a friend and won’t go anywhere else now. Chicken Shashlik and Murgh Jaal (not on the menu) are a favourite. Staff are amazing and friendly with nothing being to much trouble.

we had a take away from here for the first time.Never really been impressed by the Indian restaurants around here but this seems to be the best of an average bunch.The chicken tikka shashlic was really good, the lamb madras very tasty and the sag paneer a bit lacking in paneer. Overall we enjoyed our dishes and will go back.

It has been a while since I last visited the Masala Club but as ever, our welcome was warm, the cost reasonable and the food delicious! Service as ever was attentive without being over the top. I just wonder though why are complimentary drinks not offered with the bill?

We have eaten in here once in the winter months, which we found the food was nice but it was so cold in there we had our meal with our coats on. Since then we haven’t eaten in but got take aways on numerous occasions (once a month) can’t fault the food from here but wouldn’t advise eating inside during cold months.

We have eaten both in restaurant and take away and I can say I was very happy with the food and service both times.The restaurant is very clean and you can see the chefs cooking through a window which I nice touch.We will be good many more time, great place to go.

Thought I would see what the fuss was all about at the Masala club it is getting great reviews. Service is good but the food I found was very bland. For my opinion Burgess Hill just doesn't have a great curry house. Can not see what or how this place is getting get reviews. Sadly I won't be going back.

If I had a tenner for every time I have been told "we have found a really good curry house you should try it" and guess what it has been the same as every other curry house, I would buy you dinner at the Masala Club. I went there on the recommendation of friends (I have to admit to having low expectations - "We have this great curry house"...yadda yadda same-same).Well, the Masala Club is at least a level, or three, above your average High St. curry emporium. It was packed on a Friday evening, 7:30 pm with diners and we were glad that we had booked. This is rather more than your post-pub vindaloo. You can see into the kitchen, always a good sign and the food excellent: a great range from the mild to the rather more challenging on the spice front, fresh and good value. The service is friendly and the atmosphere, buzzing. I have been back, and will again.

I was going to order online, which looked very user friendly but due to food allergies phoned up to check as suggested online. We have nut and fish allergies but found staff to be very understanding and helpful and cooked the sauces from scratch to ensure these ingredients were excluded.We ordered vegetable madras, chicken tikka madras and chicken tikka masala, pilau rice, keema and plain nans. Every thing tasted absolutely amazing and obviously very fresh and natural ingredients and tender chicken. Prices were in line with other takeway/ restaurants in B.Hill but liked the fact that you get full, large tins of curry whereas others you only get the smaller tins for the same price. Will definitely return.

Have been eating at this local curry house for years. In the last year, they have gone in to overdrive with the quality of food and service. Always a very warm welcome and great food and service. Very popular place so expect a small wait at busy times - but worth waiting the dishes served up are great!
