Visiting the area to go to the theatre and happened upon this place the next morning. Top tier ham and cheese pastry and excellent cinnamon swirl. Not often visiting the area but if we do we will be back.

Fresh Bristol sourdough, warm from the oven - it's the food of the gods! I've also enjoyed baguettes, rye bread and pastries, including the Marmite swirl. The young, smiley staff are lovely too.

I was lucky to be visiting my daughter in Bristol for two weeks to find the most perfect café and bakery. I found the staff and the quality of your products to be exceptional especially the leaks, bacon, and cheddar Toasties that was prepared, especially for my breakfast, even though it is a lunch item. I wish I had that recipe. I just returned home and I’m dreaming about my breakfast for the self Anointed king Richard! Please send the recipe my way.🙏

In the past the shop was noted for great food ,friendly service and a nice ambience. The service is far less welcoming and some of the staff could do with an attitude adjustment.Loos no longer available and coffee served in a waxy disposable cup that leaves a "different" taste . All in all a big change since new owners arrived

Disappointed this morning, as we popped in for some pastries as a treat to start the week. The woman serving me was curt and actually rolled her eyes at me. Amazing behaviour for a place charging £3 a pastry and £4 for bread. Spoke to a friend shortly afterwards who laughed and said "I know exactly which woman you mean". Staff having a bad reputation among locals isn't a good look! Won't be back even though we like the bread.

When Mark was running Mark’sBread the quality of the sour dough and everything else was excellent. Bought bread there for years. Now the French sticks have a soft crust as do mist of the other breads that used to have a tasty crunchy crust. And the texture of the bread is soft and doughy in an unpalatable way. Sadly yesterdays shop there will be our last as we’ve hoped every time the quality would return.

We used to love Mark’s Bread and popping in would bring us joy, but I went today to buy take out pastries and the whole experience was just dreadful. I was stood back from the counter and was shouted at to stand back behind the yellow line (I had wrongly assumed the yellow line was for a second customer to stand behind as it was quite far back). I completely accept services have put measures in place and I trust the distance to the counter has been measured, but there was absolutely no need for the hostile way in which the message to stand back was delivered. I moved to stand behind the yellow line but couldn’t then see the pastries so it made it harder to decide and I had to shout my order in. The whole experience felt very uncomfortable. I asked for a pork sausage roll and a vegetarian sausage roll and was given 2 pork sausage rolls which I didn’t realise until I’d arrived back at home. I also bought some sweet pastries which were dry and not as enjoyable as they once were. A real shame as this used to be such a valued bakery in the community!

I have been coming here for almost 10 years. The bread is always excellent. However, the service has gone downhill significantly. The blonde lady (usually on coffees) is always so angry, never smiles and appears to hate the public. A trip to Mark’s Bread used to be a joyful experience. I still go for the bread but dread the grumpy reception. Unfortunately this lady’s attitude (she seems to be one of the longer-serving members of staff) appears to have rubbed off on some of the other staff now, who have adopted a similarly curt attitude. Don’t let grumpy staff ruin your bakery, please!

Have been in frequently for lunch, I go in with a face mask and respect social distancing but feel staff are very hostile and unnecessary with their attitude as i must of been 3+ metres away from counter and was abruptly shouted at to stand back. Visited this cafe at 12.45pm on Friday 14 February, Valentines Day. Liked the look of the sandwiches on the board so asked for 2 types only to be told there were none left. I then ordered soup of the day off the board and again was told there was none left. Finally, I ordered 2 meatball baps and, guess what, there was only one left! So much for our Valentine's lunch which ended with up me not having anything! When the board was finally updated, I noticed many other people coming in and leaving again without buying food. I have 2 comments on this: 1. Please keep the specials board up to date. Its frustrating to have to have keep going back to the table to look for something else. 2. Why was it out of so much food still at 1pm? Isn't that still lunch time for many workers?

We only buy their read. It's the best in Bristol and worth every penny. Mark and his wife are absolutely lovely as are most of the staff although the last couple of times I've been given a rather brusque 'welcome' from a particular staff member which lets the side down. The food is lovely as is the coffee. Cheese toastie at £6 is pretty expensive though.

I recently attended the Basic Ferments and Global Ferments courses run by Rachel De Thample at River Cottage HQ on consecutive days, and both were absolutely fantastic. Rachel is an excellent teacher—knowledgeable, engaging, and passionate about fermentation. Each course was packed with information and hands-on opportunities, and I came away with a solid understanding of the techniques, plenty of inspiration, and confidence to try more at home. The sessions were well-structured, with a great balance between learning the science behind fermentation and the practical steps for creating delicious ferments. I especially appreciated the range of recipes we explored, from classic basics to more adventurous global flavors. I’ve brought several ferments home and can’t wait to taste them once they’re ready. These courses have truly transformed how I think about fermented foods, and I’d recommend them to anyone interested in exploring this fascinating and rewarding area of cooking. A big thank you to Rachel and the River Cottage team (including Sean for chauffeuring) for such an enjoyable and educational experience!
