OK, this is a poor rating, but let's get this out of the way first, they were really good fish and chips, a nice meaty fish, crisp batter, good chips, mushy peas were, well, mushy peas and the curry source very nice, spicier than average.... Why the poor rating you ask? Well, we visited on a Friday evening, around 6:30pm at the end of half term week, there were a few people waiting for orders ahead of us, but it certainly wasn't busy. Our order was taken promptly through the hatch when we arrived and we were told they would give us a shout when ready... The wait, 42 minutes!!!!! I'm not sad enough to time it, but once I started getting bored with the wait, I could see the transaction time on my phone, gradually counting up to 42 minutes ago!! That's for 2 fish and chips, 2 sausage and chips and some peas and source. Honestly, you'd think they would be expecting customers at that time, but there was one guy by himself, taking orders and cooking/serving. Unfortunately, he was completely loosing track of order too, and we saw our fish and chips (not knowing they were ours), sat on the side waiting for several minutes before he finally shouted us. They were such good fish and chips we'd probably go again, but I'd certainly ask the wait time before ordering!!

Absolutely lovely fish and chips. Some of the best I’ve ever had! Lovely thick, chunky fish, freshly cooked in light crispy batter with a generous portion of chips. Piping hot. This week I ate at magpies and trenchers in Whitby and I can honestly say that that both probably scored about a 5/6 out of 10! Maid Marians was more like a 9!!

I called in Saturday for an early lunch, its was terrible. I have a house in the Bay so know the chip shop. Granted i think i was the first customer of the day, however it was a poor experience. The batter was soggy, the fish undercooked, and it was swimming in oil both in the tray and between the fish and the batter. Disappointing considering the reputation, maybe it is under new management, or maybe it should be. Drive to Sleights, Seamer or Thomsons on the A64 if you want quality, i will,

This certainly seems to be where the locals go. It wasn't hard to work out why either. We ordered 4 lots fish and chips and there was no way we could finish it all. But more importantly the quality was great. The batter was light, crispy and not too greasy. You could tell that not only was the fish fresh but the oil was too. With covid it was a case of eat outside on the picnic benches or take it to the beach. No complaints about either option. You might want to call ahead and order to cut the queuing time but despite the 20 min wait it was definitely worth it. Opening and closing times are a little flexible so worth checking out that too.

Happened upon this cute little shop in an alley way in Robin Hood's Bay. There was a bit of a wait but I ordered and managed to get my cod bites really quickly - I later realised I might have been given the wrong order when I heard my order number called out! The set up seemed like a cottage industry as there was no dine in. You order through a window, wait and get your food, then walk across to where there is some salt/ vinegar, etc placed on a table and a few seats. The cod bites and chips were freshly fried and tasty. Only negative was an uncooked chip and it was a tad pricey at £7.20 for the smallish portion. I spotted the seafood basket on the board only after ordering, so would have liked to try that as well - maybe next time!

We were staying nearby so this was our local chippy and were pleased it was so close on our first night, but the batter let down the meal and most of it ended in the bin, The quality of the fish itself and chips were fine. The menu sounds very good however the portions are very small. I ordered the basket of seafood which listed all this seafood however it was only 1 squid ring, 1 prawn, 2 cod bites and something else which cost £7.50 and it was extremely deep fried. We have been visiting here for years! 4 generations of our family in fact have been enjoying the fish & chips when visiting Robinhoods Bay! However was very disappointed to find after the lockdown prices had rocketed, portions smaller & quality not quite as good. I was even more disappointed that they had ran out of ketchup pods that are 40p each and was selling very small bottles for £3 ! Someone in front of me in the queue asked just for a “squirt” on the chips for their child when they was putting on the salt & vinegar and they said no you have to buy a bottle for £3 ! They could have just opened a bottle to give their customers a little bit if they asked especially for the children ! The queue was big and people was paying lots of money for these fish & chips, no children’s options available I thought it was really tight & bad customer service . Such a shame as this used to be a really family friendly fish shop and are not sure if it’s been taken over, it just doesn’t seem the same.

We went here as a family during a blustery autumnal day and were really looking forward to some fresh fish and chips by the sea. Unfortunately, we were put off when we entered the shop - everywhere was dirty, messy and greasy and there seemed to be no concern for hygiene. We were also very shocked to see a member if staff frying food in shorts, surely this is against health and safety standards. We ordered our food (fish and chips x2 and sausage, chips and beans x2). The service was very bland and staff seemed disinterested in questions that we asked about the area. When the food arrived, the chips were very greasy and overcooked, sitting in a pool of oil, the fish was soggy and did not taste fresh at all, the sausages had some gristle in them and the beans looked like they had been sitting in a warmer for days. This chip shop used to be a staple of our bi-annual visits to RHB, but sadly, it has changed hands and we are disappointed and saddened to say that we will be giving Mariondale a wide berth in future.

This is everything a fish and chip shop should be. Fairly basic, yes. A bit cramped, yes. A powerful smell of frying, yes! But the focus of this business is on the quality of the Fish and Chips, not on the decor. The fish is fresh, and cooked to order (and yes, that might mean you have to wait a bit). The portions are generous, and supplied in lidded containers which can be closed - very handy to take away. Rather than eat them in the little area opposite the shop, I recommend going down to the beach and finding a comfy rock, or going up to the 'Quarter Deck' (up the steps to the right of the old lifeboat station).

We arrived just after they opened at lunch and there was a queue. Initial impressions were not good as they were playing really loud music which was odd in a chippy but we really wanted fish and chips so we queued. We wanted haddock but they didn't have any so we had cod chips and peas each. The cod was terrible, grey, chewy and the chips were greasy. It was also rather expensive. They also ran out of skinless fish by the time we left the shop. Such a disappointing experience at the seaside where the fish should be the best. We spent many years at the bay as kids and this place was great but it's obviously gone down hill and I would not recommend.

A chippy with charm and great fish and chips but no bling. Cheerful service and old style fish and chips (no thin, wrinkly chips here!). Very convenient for beach visitors and walkers. An essential stop!

I have visited mariondales for fish and chips every time I have been to robin hoods bay. Yes the queue can be big, there is a reason for that, because it’s worth it. I have read that the staff’s attitude isn’t good. I have never found that to be the case, perhaps they treat people in the way they are treated. Super fish and chips and very good price. I will be back for sure.

We didn't want to leave the beach the other night as the weather had turned so lovely. As more and more people came down the steps to where we were sitting carrying their dinner in boxes, the smell of fish & chips surrounded us...

We always knew we wanted to get married in Robin Hood's Bay and have fish and chips from Mariondales and they didn't let us down. We got married at Secret Seaview Chapel, then partied at Fylingdales Village

Bought fish and chips here today. They were terrible and had a very bad taste. Probably the worst fish and chips i have ever bought. Dont waste your money which was exactly what i told the person on the beach who asked me where they were from.

We had fish and chips from this takeaway. They were cooked fresh so we waited a while, but well worth it. Nice chips and crispy batter on the fish. Friendly staff who chatted whilst we waited.

Fish & chips were so good! Glorious smell wafting up the street! Loved the bioboxes, Ate them on the Quartermasters Deck round the corner overlooking the sea, warm breeze blowing & it was a great ending to a lovely day.

Visited after finding on the Internet. Fantastic freshly cooked haddock & chips, great mushy peas. Not the cheapest but certainly some of the best fish and chips that I’ve had. Great service from the lads frying too. Will visit again when in Robin Hoods Bay. Thanks

My good friends had recommended here while we were skiing in 2017. Finally got round to a camping trip here where our friends joined us for the day. Obviously this was where we were going to indulge in this very British meal. I have to say I wasn't disappointed. Fish was delicious with nice crispy batter, chips were great too. Very friendly staff. The young lad had only had 3 hours sleep (oh to be young again!) I fell in love with Robin Hoods Bay this weekend so I'll definately be returning in the future.

Although we hadn’t planned to have fish and chips whilst sat in the Bay I’m glad we did. The lads working there were a friendly bunch, even when I bet they would’ve rather been in the pub down the road watching the World Cup. I’m sure the relaxed atmosphere, the warm sunshine and the sea air helped, but these really were the best fish and chips I’d had in years. The fish, as you would hope at the coast, was really fresh and tasty and the batter was light and crispy. And they’re guilt-free too because that walk back up the hill will certainly burn a few calories off!

Bought fish and chips to eat on the beach. Huge portion (haddock more like a whale), freshly cooked to order. Overall best fish and chips in a long time!

I don’tknow if this place is any good. After 15 minutes waiting at the bar, only 1 person got served - by the 2 staff. The 1 ‘serving’ then left 6 of us waiting and went outside to wipe down tables. Rude, surly, we up and left.

I came here during each visit from Canada and we were just getting ready to return again. I am just shocked to find out that they have closed permanently and I can only live with my memories. I wanted to bring my wife there for what I hoped would be another incredible weekend. I can only hope the very best for the family and say thanks for all of the memories and the fantastic bar towels that I still have after 20 years Thank you. Muchas gracias. Hvala, arrigoto, Merci,

We had a nice English breakfast for the start of our walk. Not the best ever perhaps, but enjoyable and open at 7:30. Prices are reasonable, but cash only

We had the unfortunate "luck" of spending a night at this place. Got a "suite" under the creaky flooring of the pub with noise-channelling ventilation ducts overhead, a substandard kitchen with no cupboards and wobbly table, a toilet with no ventilation, exposed pipes and disjointed faucet and a door with no handle in sight... All this came with a delayed check-in and service that leaves much to hope for. While the rooms above the pub may make for a better night's sleep, there is little hope that could improve this establishment's culture of hospitality.

What’s really interesting about this cafe is that it’s part of the now closed second funicular tram at the top. Loved the Yorkshire owner of the cafe ☕️. Great bacon rolls before we checked into The Grand next door 🚪 (which we liked ❤️ too)
