This was Wetherspoons at the prices of a Kings Road brasserie. I had the fish and chips, was fried in old oil with both the fish and chips left burnt.

It was our first time trying The Mariners and it was fab! We got a good table by the front window overlooking the bay and outside seating so we could enjoy the lovely evening. I didn’t catch her name but there was one lady handling the bar and orders on her own downstairs and she did an awesome job, was proper on top of everything and was friendly too. The food was amazing! So tasty and really interesting options too. Not the cheapest but for the name attached to the pub it’s not surprising, but also very fair because the food was extremely well done. The chicken thigh madras curry in particular was delicious. It was quite loud at times so occasionally difficult to hear each other, but overall a great atmosphere. Will gladly return one day!

The views & decor itself as well as the staff are great. Two of us had the monkfish (£40) which didn’t come with anything else so £9 for a broccoli side we thought was expensive. If they added a few potatoes & some veg with the mains then it would be worth it. The desserts were again delicious but a bit pricey at £9 each.

We have visited Mariners a few times before and we were not disappointed again this last visit. The Scotch egg starter and the goat cheese with beetroot were a superb start to our meal. Shepherd’s pie and burger were excellent and we finished off sharing a Pavlova which was to die for. Our waitress, Macy, was excellent. She made the effort to welcome us, as the maître d was busy with other diners when we arrived. We had a window seat downstairs as we had a dog with us, which was also made most welcome too! Mariners is unpretentious and we will definitely be back again.

First time we have visited The Mariners since it has been run by the Ainsworths. It is still a great location and the terrace was packed/buzzing on a sunny BHW Sunday. We had booked and were seated inside downstairs next to a large terrace facing window - it was a lovely (dog friendly) table. I had the roast beef and my wife and daughter had the vegetarian roast (it was great that a child’s veggie roast option was available). Followed by the Spotted Dick dessert for me (set roast menu) and the trifle for wife/daughter. The food was absolutely delicious. The beef was tender and perfectly cooked (would have loved just a little bit more of it!) and the desserts, especially the trifle, were outstanding. Hats off to those working in the kitchen, which must be an extremely well-oiled operation - the number of high quality plates of food being served up was very impressive. It is not cheap but offers good value and the cask beer was especially well priced (£5 a pint). £100 for two course beef roast, veggie roast and dessert, child veggie roast, two pints of beer and a non-alcoholic cocktail. The only negative was that the service was not quite on point. We were left standing awkwardly at the bar when we arrived - this really is a pet hate and is so easily avoided (‘good afternoon sir - I’ll be with you in one moment’). The waiting staff in general looked stressed/unhappy and an order for another pint with dessert was forgotten about (it did arrive immediately with apology when reminded). I get it - it was busy and there was a lot going on, but maintaining top level service in those conditions is what sorts the wheat from the chaff. Will we go back? - absolutely. Hopefully when we do the front of house will have been sharpened up sufficiently to elevate the whole experience from ‘very good’ to ‘outstanding’.

Went in for a drink and we decided to have some snacks. Everything we had was superb. Possibly the best cabbage I’ve ever had and the truffle mayo was worth the money on its own. The scotch egg is worth a try too. We will have a proper sit down meal next year. Unfortunately I didn’t get his name but the gentleman front of house is a credit to the establishment. Return visit, arrived 15 minutes early for lunch and taken straight away to our table upstairs, overlooking the estuary and watched the farmers working the fields during an excellent lunch. We shared an Olive small plate (best and largest I have ever had) then we both enjoyed our mains burger and fish n chips, I finished with cranachan pavlova while she had coffee. We polished off some great drinks. All fantastic and well waited on by nice staff in a great air con interior, outside was scor thing today.

We had a fantastic experience at The Mariners in Rock. The ground floor is dog friendly, which was perfect for us and the dogs were honestly better behaved than some of the other guests! While we were being shown to our table by the staff, a group of very rude people barged past us (including my mum, who uses a walking stick) just to grab a table by the window. Despite the situation, the staff remained calm, professional, and handled it brilliantly. I take my hat off to them, it’s a real credit to the level of training and quality of service that Paul and Emma clearly instil in their team. The food was absolutely amazing (try the cabbage - it’s to die for), we had the fish and chips and lamb Shepard’s pie, followed by pavlova, pineapple upside down cake and chocolate orange crème brûlée. Every member of staff we interacted with was very friendly, attentive, and welcoming. We’ll definitely be back. Thank you for a lovely lunch.

Probably the best roast dinner I have ever had in good old England. We had the beef. Meat was perfectly pink. The sliced beef had a shredded beef underneath with was packed with flavour. All the veg was on point. The Yorkshire was filled with rich jammy onions which was a most welcome surprise. The gravy was the kind you always wish for in a restaurant and they brought and extra jug without even having to ask. The entire meal was a solid 10/10 throughout. The service was friendly and professional and they made sure we got everything we needed. We had kids and dogs onboard and that was never a problem. We stayed in Morgan Porth and took the ferry over to get there and was well worth the trip. A huge thank you again and again. Cheers.

Decent food, although a little over hyped, they know the audience here and cater to it, but wasn't overly impressed with the food, still delicious, just not stand out. If your ever in the area you must make the effort and visit!! Visited The Mariners Public House in Padstow many times. This time for a family birthday and was thoroughly impressed. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming—perfect for a special occasion without feeling overly formal. The food was excellent across the board, but the standout for me was the buttermilk fried chicken starter—crispy, tender, and packed with flavour. I've even recreated it to great success from Paul's book (also highly recommended!). Mains and drinks maintained the same high standard, with quality ingredients and well-balanced dishes. With an average spend of around £50 per head for a starter, main and drinks, it felt like great value for the quality on offer. The service was smooth and friendly, and the views from the restaurant were simply stunning—especially if you're lucky enough to visit on a clear sunny day. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Padstow, especially if you're after great food in a relaxed but special setting.

The Mariners Public House Review: A Disappointing Experience My visit to The Mariners Public House was unfortunately a letdown from start to finish. Upon ordering, the food arrived with alarming speed—within a minute or two. At first, I was impressed by how fast it came out, but then I realized that this lightning-fast service had its downsides. The food was barely lukewarm, as if it had been pre-prepared and simply reheated. The roast potatoes were unpleasant, stale and lacking any real flavor or texture. The single slice of beef was dominated by fat and gristle, leaving much to be desired in terms of quality. The cauliflower cheese was not only unseasoned but also thick and gloopy, as though it had been sitting out for far too long. The broccoli, oddly, tasted like lemon dish soap, which was off-putting and unappetizing. The only redeeming features were the gravy which was rich and flavourful, and the Yorkshire pudding, which was light and well-cooked, but they were far from enough to salvage the meal. As for the service, it was equally disappointing. The staff were more interested in chatting amongst themselves than attending to customers. We were left unattended for long stretches, not checked on at any point during the meal, and had to wait at every stage of service. For two courses and drinks, the total bill came to over £80, which is steep for the quality of food and service provided. Overall, my experience at The Mariners was far from the standard I had hoped for. I won’t be returning anytime soon, and I would not recommend it to others.

I love it here and have been a lot. But the menu has not changed since the revamp (years)....which now puts me off going!

Dined here after watching a review on Gary eats, I was so looking forward to the same experience, sadly not! My daughter had" The Dogs Pollock" which she enjoyed. I had Shepherds pie, it had good flavour but was extremely dry. My side of broccoli was stone cold. We both had trifle for dessert, this was awful! simply flavourless stodge. I'm a good home cook, nothing fancy and my daughter says our meals at home far exceed what we had at the Mariners.

Relaxing atmosphere, clean and excellent service. I will definitely recommend The Mariners to my family and friends. Best of all I had a birthday card waiting at my table did not expect that. Thank you The Mariners.

We had a weekend in Padstow and it was our friends birthday and decided to try The Mariners, which was booked months ago. We were not disappointed at all, the food was just delicious, the drinks were yum, the negroni was a big hit and the dessert certainly went down a treat. The staff were so welcoming and friendly, the atmosphere was good but probably even better in season. We will definitely come back again (well, whenever we next come back to Cornwall).. :0)

The food was exceptional , very well presented , extremely tasty and very good value for money. Service was first class , servers were friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was easy going and relaxed. We were treating ourselves to our belated anniversary and the staff made us feel very welcome and even presented us with a card , which i thought was a very nice touch . We will be back.

It's a bit stuffy, but the food is good and the setting lovely. It's a bit expensive, but I suppose that is what you have to expect when it's a celebrity chef gastro pub / restaurant.

Simply outstanding!! From the moment you are greeted to happily offering a generous tip " The Shack " in Falmouth is a must for all sea food lovers! The food, the flavours, the portion sizes, the choice, the price.. all just great value! If it was closer this would be our local go to most weekends. Nothing to fault here! Highly recommend you visit! Thankyou for a super lovely evening Keisha Craig and family from Newquay. Food: 5/5 | Service: 5/5 | Atmosphere: 5/5

We stayed at The Scarlet Hotel for a 3-night babymoon—just me, my wife (heavily pregnant with twins), and our two small dogs. We booked a month in advance, hoping for something calm, luxurious, and memorable before everything changed. The total cost came in just under £2.5k, including the room, spa access, meals, and on-site extras. The location is stunning—easily one of the best spots in the south. The view from the hot tub at sunset is unforgettable, and sea views throughout the hotel are genuinely impressive. Our two-storey, dog-friendly room had a private garden and ocean view—on paper, it had real promise. The food was exceptional. Huge credit to the chefs and kitchen team. Every meal was top-tier—some of the best I’ve had anywhere. It’s something to be very proud of! Staff were polite, but it felt like everyone was new. There’s a barcode ordering system—great idea when it works—but it’s not thoughout the hotel. I had to chase down someone on more than one occasion, and it isn’t available by the hot tubs. We used the tubs twice, and weren’t checked on—despite staff showing the tub next to us to new guests. At this price point, the lack of service isn’t acceptable. Also, adding a 12% service fee to everything—we really shouldn't need to be chasing for service! To be clear, it’s not about the money. I’d have paid double for a truly special experience we’d remember before the twins arrived. But it didn’t feel special—we were left to figure things out ourselves. The room? Not great. The finish was poor—I’ve done better DIY. Rough paintwork, rushed fittings, and it felt unclean. The private garden was full of old discarded small bones—which our dogs loved, but we didn’t. Constantly stopping them from eating leftovers from previous guests is not only unpleasant—it’s dangerous. I’m all for reusing towels to be sustainable—but ask. Using the same two towels for four days with no offer of change didn’t sit right. Even if we’d said no, being asked shows care. One day, we asked for the room to be cleaned while we were out. On return, someone had clearly been in—but the bath hadn’t been wiped, my wife’s used contact lenses were still on the edge, my wine glass and empty bottle remained, and the bin hadn’t been emptied. That’s not attention to detail—it’s poor housekeeping by any standard. The restaurant? The setting didn’t match the standard of the meals. Light fittings, broken curtains, and lampshades had dust or cobwebs. That lack of care was visible throughout the hotel—corners cut, details missed. The spa? Underwhelming, with a tired, run-down feel. The lift didn’t inspire confidence either. I joked we’d get stuck and my wife would go into labour. It didn’t look or feel recently serviced, and I couldn’t find an inspection tag. Safety isn’t optional—it’s essential. One final point—there are a lot of steps and uneven paths throughout. These aren’t gentle slopes—they’re steep, awkward routes, especially down to the beach. One wrong move and it could end badly. I’m not blaming the geography—but this wasn’t made clear when making the phone booking. A simple heads-up would’ve helped. Final thoughts: I didn’t do enough research—and that’s on me. I assumed the higher price meant a better experience. It doesn’t. Looking closer, many glowing reviews seem like paid promotions or influencer freebies. If you're getting it for free, of course it seems acceptable. I didn’t realise it was a 4-star hotel until I saw the plaque at reception. It’s definitely not 5-star. Without the food and a few kind staff, I’d question whether it’s even a 4. Some may say I’m being picky. Maybe. But expectations are personal—and ours weren’t met. This isn’t about extravagance—it’s about basic care, cleanliness, and guests feeling like their time and money matter. Would I recommend it? Only if it’s heavily discounted. There is, however, real potential here—but right now, it’s not worth the money, and it doesn't meet expectations.
