Worst Fish&Chips we have ever bought, chewy chips, completely indigestible, probably left over from previous cooking or even before that. Would not recommend this place.

So disappointing. Chewy batter on the fish and chips were awful. The food I guess had been sat for a while. £19 for two small fish, one sausage and two chips and honestly, it was awful. Such a shame and certainly won’t return

Cod and chips looked great but all batter. No cod. Chips awful frozen I think. Expensive to. Nice location just crappy cod and chips.

We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch of fish & chips. The cod had just the right amount of batter and was cooked really well. Generous portion of chips too. We also ordered sausages, chicken nuggets, mushy peas and curry sauce. Happy customers here!

Had and order for family from here last week and it’s really sad this has gone down so quickly. Fish not very good and batter doesn’t taste very good. Seems the oil may have needed changing as the Chips had loads of tiny black dots all over them. Everything tasted greasy. We also had kebab and it is sliced off and fried… I can understand this is because not everyone wants a kebab but husband didn’t eat it. It’s such a shame as lovely people but standard has dropped.

Tried the kebabs today... Personally we think the meat started life in Wickes, and has been cut to suit !!!!. Normally ( being male ) i flick off the green bits to get to the joy of crispy meat ...... having tried that ,we threw away the meat and ate the greens just to obtain moisture !!!!! . This has to be in many years of " kebab research " the worst possible excuse going. They need to stick to chips !!!!. Priced at £7.20, its worthwhile going elsewhere.

Probably, the worst fish and chips i have ever had the misfortune of buying !!!!, cold,greasy,grey,old,,,, how can you discribe such a complete and utter waste of hard earned cash. Avoid this place and go elsewhere!!!!!!!. Such a shame as it used to be Really good,,but no longer!!!!!!!

Greasy chips, cheese and onion slice heated until it wilted. We have had mixed experiences here. Sadly we are disappointed more often than not. We won’t be using this chip shop again.

I have been here 4x and every time I get food poisoning. I always order the fish and chips. I eat from other chippys and am fine so it is something to do with this place. I would not recommend.

I normally frequent my local chippy in Whitchurch but thought I would try pit Overton's. When I watched the lady make up a cod and chips thought that was an unusual piece fish more a large cod bite although it had a branch off the side. Unusual I thought. I waited a while and was then presented with my purchase. Got home only to discover that excuse for a piece of fish was mine. At £6.35 what a rip off compared to my normal.. Lots of people waiting and staff in disarray bickering about their employer ..shall not return any time soon but stick to my chippy in Whitchurch just 3 miles down the road

Popped in for a quick meal. Food was lovely and fresh. Didn't need to order a large chips as small was plenty for me a 8yr

To be able define consistency means I’ve been a fair few times, and unfortunately due to a lack of consistency throughout the area I’ve returned despite periodic below average experiences. Portions can be terrific but they can also be awful. Be a while before I visit again.

..... and the portions are generous, but I didn't much care for the haddock with skin (unusual these days) and thought the quality of the fish was pretty run-of-the-mill. Chips could have used another couple of minutes in the fryer. Still, it was a good feed washed down with some nice red wine.

Visited on a popular Friday and well worth the wait. The food was delicious and such large portions. All cooked to perfection. Thank you Mariners, we will certainly be back.

Let me put it out here first, this chippy is amongst the best. The chips are just right and they have such an extensive menu meaning there is something for everyone. Everything is cooked fresh and the fish is always of good quality.Now for the negatives, and I'm sorry there has to be. 1st off they no longer open gonna Monday. Now because the only other chippy nearby us is also closed on a Monday it's now left the local community to find it impossible to have fish and chips on a Monday. They were also closed Xmas eve which is our families traditional Christmas takeaway night (And I know it is many others as well)Now I am a great lover of Rock, nothing better than a good portion of Rock & Chips, but lately they have left me disappointed by not having any in stock. Now it might just me being unlucky, but we do travel quite a way mainly because Rock is on their menu, but when ordering being continually told it's sold out is a bit gut wrenching. They hadn't even put a sold out sticker over it like they had other items on the menu.I would love to mark this place 5 out of 5 but these 2 detractors have marked it down in my world.

I have been using Mariners for a number of years and always found the food variable. In the evenings it is generally fairly good but lunchtimes have become something of a disaster. About a month ago I bought a “Senior’s cod and chips” and was charged £4.70. When I got it home I found that the fish had suffered second-degree burns and the chips were a single, sodden mass. I picked my way through it and discarded almost half. Last week I decided that it must have been a one-off so ventured in again. This time I saw a sign on the pavement advertising a “Lunch-time special, cod and chips £4.90” In I went and ordered cod and chips. As usual I did not examine my change but when I got home found that I had been charged £5.90. (I thought it had been a mistake and did nothing) To make matters worse the chips were again a cold, solid glutinous mass although the fish was reasonable. You would think that I would have learned my lesson, wouldn’t you? Today I was starving, on the go from 5.30am and nothing to eat all day. Again I saw the sign outside, “Lunchtime special Cod and chips £4.90”. In I went and asked for the cod and chips. “£5.90 please!” Said the assistant. (Hang on, I thought, this isn’t a mistake at all.) “The sign outside says cod and chips are £4.90.” I said. She gave me a “Are you thick or something” look. “That’s the lunchtime special.” She said. Surprised I asked her, “What’s the difference?” “The lunchtime special comes with a smaller portion of chips!” She announced. So what makes the “Lunchtime Special” special, is that it is actually inferior in that you do not get a full portion of chips! Apart from the obvious trick being played here the fact is that the quality of the food has actually gone down-hill dramatically since the shop re-opened after refurbishment and the proprietor put a notice in the local post office apologising for the poor service and quality of the food. I think I will make the journey to Whitchurch in the future.

Get a nice portion of fish and chips here, always good service and very reasonable prices. Would recommend.

Amazing local business, with friendly staff. Good variety of food. Love the sweet potato fries. They also do gluten free days every couple of weeks.

Possibly the worse fish and chips I’ve had.

Visited to order a takeaway for family of 8 while on holiday. Staff were knowledgeable and courteous, service was prompt and food was very tasty. No complaints and would happily use again next time we are in this part of the world.

I pre-ordered my large chips and pea fritter for 9:45pm, to have after a trip to watch a film at Movietime (the village cinema), in the hall opposite the chippy. I arrived at Mariners at 9:35pm, my chips etc were handed to me almost immediately. The chips and pea fritter were cooked to perfection, crisp and light a perfect meal to end a busy day. This is not my first trip to Mariners and won't be my last, a well run chippy, staff friendly, shop clean I would highly recommend it as somewhere to get a quick and delicious meal.

Stopped here few times and love the chips. Quick service and very fresh. Parking not great to find when busy but it street parking

We have had a few takeaways here and the food has always been good. The sizes are really generous, too. Sometimes the chips can be a little underdone, but the food is always hot and the pre-order option always works well if you want to avoid the queues. We would recommend this takeaway with no hesitation.

Living in a nearby town, decided to give this shop a visit one Friday night.

I've always liked Mariners, and until today haven't had a bad experience. However, tonight my haddock was simply off - smelled bad, tasted dodgy, and couldn't be eaten. I'd got home by the time I found this to be the case, so simply ate the chips and threw away the fish.

This is our local chippy and the quality was variable in the past. However, since it was refurbed about a year ago, the quality has been consistently good, as evidenced by the queue on a Friday evening!

Moved to Overton recently and was pleasantly surprised that Overton has a chip shop and could continue my Thursday night fish and chips ritual....... yum yum

Sadly this is not the one to go to, the batter is awful with dirty oil swimming on soggy batter the fish tastes like Coley not Cod, will have to go to London Road Old Basing for nearest good fish & chips, how sad when good quality oil fish & batter are not too dificult to achieve, just awkward in your own home coping will hot oil.

As a local I have used Mariners on a number of occasions recently mainly through necessity and found it to be nearly OK at best. I realise that fish is expensive these days but at about £5.40 for a small cod and chips this place (pardon the pun) is not good value. The quality of the chips also leaves a lot to be desired, they seem to be offcuts from the makings of proper chips and they are often cold. On one occasion I bought cod and chips for lunch and had to exit quickly when the traffic warden came. I drove about ½ mile and parked up to eat my food. The cod had a very strong smell and was very greasy and the chips were sodden and very cold. (Thankfully the portion size was very small.) The staff are, “Couldn’t care less” and even when serving you they talk to one another, completely ignoring you. Most of the good reviews of this establishment seem to come from locals and I wonder how partisan their reviews are. The owner put an open letter in the local Co-op some months ago apologising for the poor service and quality of food during and after their refurbishment but little seems to have changed despite his promises to the contrary. Just by giving the staff smart uniforms does not help the quality of the food although may fool you into believing that it will be good, which it generally is not.

This is our local go-to fish and chip takeaway. One large cod and chips is enough for two - add mushy peas and its lovely. Conveniently on the way home so easy to pop in. Service very quick and usually cooked to order. Highly recommend

Having just spent over £10 on fish and chips here this evening I can honestly say these where the worst I have ever eaten, cold chips , grey cod, with batter laden in fat yuk. Why is it so hard to make a good batter it's not rocket sicence we will never return .

Pretty good Fish and Chips, and a regular Friday night stop for us. Usually excellent, but standards have varied recently when busy, and the non standard Fish are cooked from Frozen

We tried Mariners for the first time tonight on our way home to Whitchurch from Basingstoke. Chips were great and the fish tasty! I had Rock and it was a nice large piece. It is somethong not found widely anymore. Highly recomended!

We enjoy the fish and chips at Mariners very much. The fish batter is perfect: not too oily or heavy. The quality of the fish is excellent and the chips are high quality,proper potato. Aren't we lucky in Overton to have such a good establishment!

We use this fish and chip shop regularly, and have always found it to be good and the service speedy. It can get busy in a Friday evening but wait times are still not too long at all. Recommended.

When the owner worked this restaurant the food was amazing. There is a willing and friendly staff there now but I personally think the food isn't as nice.

Great fish and chips - consistently tasty and more than ample portions - its popular because it is good quality food so can be busy but that, in my book is a sign of success.

Visited on Saturday lunchtime, the third time we've been to this fish and chip shop since moving nearby. Had to wait a little while as it was very busy but it was definitely worth the wait - huge portions of delicious and freshly cooked food. Good customer service too - thank you, we will definitely return :-)

Service is dreadful,cooking isn't any better greasy chips the fish smells of the cheap cooking oil they use more than anything else ,this establishment gives a bad name to a lovely British institution .

Just had a really disappointing visit to Mariners today, our first since the "refit". Prior to the refit we decided to give up buying food there as we were continuously let down by the waiting time, quality of food etc.

26 minutes to wait for fish and chips, and a battered sausage! Is that what you'd call acceptable service? I think not!

This is a great little fish and chip shop. They have a lot of choice on their menu including some nice extras like white bait and calamari.

We get our tea every Friday for an end of week treat. Outstanding value for money and absolutely yummy.

Last night we ordered 5 portions of fish and chips to be delivered to a neighbouring village. Not only was the quality of the fish and chip takeaway first class but the delivery was excellent too. The food arrived extremely well packaged and piping hot. Best fish and chips I've had for a long time and delivered to my door. Totally excellent in all respects and all five of us were on the same opinion. Thank you for a lovely meal!
