Iced coffee, burger and chips all were amazing best burger in Canterbury I have tried, Highly recommend!

This is my first review on tripadvisor but I’ve just received such appalling service I felt compelled to write one. We came for ice-cream, I asked the price and she simply pointed to a board, I asked for a single in a cup, she said yes, I then asked if I could have two flavours as a single portion. I was told no as this would be a ‘double’. Ended up sharing a ‘double’ with my husband, charged £4 for two tiny scoops of ice-cream. My son then asked for a single in a cup - he was told no as they don’t have single cups (opposite to her earlier comment). We asked if he could have a single in a bigger cup but was told no as that would look ‘silly’! I did point out that for those who are gluten intolerant, they would probably prefer to look ‘silly’ with a cup! Honestly can’t believe what we’ve experienced. We paid for our ice-creams but really wished I’d said we’d not have any ice-creams when I saw the first tiny scoop but felt it was too late! Very unfriendly, unhelpful and overpriced. Such a shame as rest of our day in Canterbury had been lovely.

Putting a board outside advertising "fish and chips" is an insult to decent chippies. Cheapest pre-breaded frozen fish and anaemic chips. Almost £20 for 2 people without drinks. Was furious at myself for going in here.

Only gave one star as there is no option for zero. Tried to overcharge us. Never apologised for her error. Witnessed her attempting it with other customers whilst we waited. The older female is rude, and has no customer service skills. Refused to supply tap water. Refused to accept credit card. Refused to apologise for her errors, Never washed her hands between serving. I feel for the younger female as she tried her best. She did the cooking and the,meal was nice, but the service from the older female was absolutely appalling, especially the blatant attempt to overcharge. Stopped going there over ten years ago, thought we would try it again. Never again.

The title says it all. Avoid. No wonder why it was empty. There are dozens of many other nicer places in this picturesque city. No need to stop here

Could not be more disappointed in this place. Asked if there was a menu - was told "no look on the board". Asked for children's menu to which the woman serving said they could do so ordered a child's burger on it own and 2 chicken nuggets and chips. Price came to around £25 and had to pay up front. Was told by the lady serving that she didn't like the old £20 note that we paid with and said "don't you have any newer £10 notes to pay with? " Half an hour later the food arrived which was underwhelming to say the least. No burger arrived however, and when asked the woman told me I hadn't ordered a burger! We asked for the receipt as proof which she declined to provide. When we left there was no appreciation for our custom or acknowledgement that we were leaving which was odd seeing as we were the only people eating in there the whole time we were in (should have heeded that warning!) So we ended up paying £25 for a couple of chips and 8 nuggets and an old lettuce leaf, no drinks (£3 a can!) and the worse the customer service I have ever experienced. Initially decided to go there to support local business but BELIEVE the other low reviews as it really is that bad! Also, observe the managers automated responses over 3 years - clearly they do not take feedback seriously.

Came in with the family was charge £7 for kids meals chicken nuggets and chips not all the order was received then. Rude staff food was appalling wouldn't recommend and would never come here again

Popped in for a coffee and ice cream. Clean and tidy. Staff friendly and the ice cream was delicious. Good choice of food and family friendly. Will defo go again

We were visiting Canterbury today as a treat for my sister who is autistic and loves going on buses to different towns (we live in Folkestone). Many of the cafes we passed were very busy and we fancied a simple and quiet place for lunch. We both had chicken nuggets and chips with salad and a cake for my sister and apple pie and ice cream for me. Food was very nice and lady serving friendly without being too overbearing which I prefer, some cafes have staff who are too attentive and I prefer to be left alone once served. Not the cheapest place and side salad was an extra £1.85 on top of the meal £6.95 but apart from the high prices, it’s a pleasant place.

Wish we had read the reviews before we went here, but it was the first place we came across. Small portions and overpriced, the lady was rude to foreign students even bullying one in the group to buy food if she wanted to sit with her the rest of her group. Such a shame in this beautiful city. Will mot be returning.

I wasn't sure what to expected as the decor was dated. However the staff were lovely and friendly made me feel welcome especally as I was on my own. The food was really nice, nothing fancy but that is what you would expect. I don't think the food was over priced, compared to what it would of cost to have a sandwich and a coffee in a large coffee shop chain. Overall very happy and would go again.

Nice little cafe, great service and the food came out super fast, less than 10mins wow, would recommend

This cafe is lovely, old fashioned, historic, first cafe on Canterbury been here for over 40 years, big portions and cheap prices, want a meal and drink, around 10 pound, if u go to Nadios it will be £15 or more for the same portion x

Lovely little family run business, does Traditional English dishes with great prices and allows you to stay out of the cold any time from 10:30- 6:00 xx would recommend Every one to try a lot but of English cuisine, in the cafe that been here 40 years x

Was unlucky to be caught as a Canterbury newbee. No prices but you'll know the price when you pay and need a morgage. Awful staff, awful food, awful prices and awful shame it's squatting at the entrance to the high street.

Nous étions 4 , mon épouse et nos 2 enfants , un fish and chips , 2 hamburger et des nuggets avec 4 boissons = 47£ , nous avions demandés les hamburgers sans salade , et voilà qu'au moment de l'addition , on nous compte la salade du burger , eh oui on vous taxe ce que vous ne mangez pas , PLUS JAMAIS

First of all the prices of the meals are extortionate considering the portion sizes are tiny and look as if they’re from a kids menu! The staff were talking very rudely about customers who from another country knowing they could not understand what they were saying about them, the food was disgusting and gave me bellyache. My table was dirty and they did not clean this before we sat down. Overall very bad customer service and will not be returning ever again.

The worst meal ever! I wished we have checked the reviews before we decided to eat there. We were really hungry and this was the first place we came to from the station. Miserable owner, tiny plates with anaemic tasteless chicken. Felt sick afterwards and yet this wasn't reflected in the bill. Eat there at your peril!

The place is shabby, the lady who runs it is absolutely vile, rude and ignorant, her staff are clueless, the prices are a total rip off and the food is rank. Not a good word to say, she should be closed down.

Muy negativo para nosotros Nos cobró 25 por un batido, 2 knickerblockerglorys y una botella de coca-cola. Incluso nos cobró 20 peniques por pagar con tarjeta de débito, lo que pensé que era ilegal. Evitar a toda costa! !

Lo único bueno de nuestra visita es que podemos advertir a otros que no se vayan.

Yo y la otra mitad solo queríamos un freír, nada importante, solo unos pocos pedazos, hicimos uno nuestro, tuve 5 artículos, él tenía 4, una botella de agua y una Fanta, 19. 20? ! ? ! ? ! ? ! podría obtener el doble de la comida por la mitad del precio en un café normal! evita este lugar! ! ! !

Awful place, think they make the price up on the spot, give it a miss... Think they noticed some of our group weren't English and added on even more!

They should be ashamed at charging £3.50 for a pathetic excuse of an ice cream. Not creamy, just cream flavoured ice. Should be shut down! Disgrace for them to be in such a beautiful city!!!

Most expensive ‘Mr Whippy 99’ and slush drink I’ve ever purchased.....£2.50 change out of a tenner! Frosty service to boot also, no wonder the place was empty.

Having had a trip to canterbury saturday and finding lots of cafe's rather full we chose maria's we did hesitate as it was empty but thought well we don't have a lot of choice so in we went, my friend chose cheese omelette chips and side salad and i chose chicken chips and salad garnish and two hot drinks very over priced, when the meals arrived the chips were very brown and dry, the salad was wilting and the top of the chicken looked grey, so i returned my meal straight away and said i am not happy with the quality of the food, they said well that is how the chips are but i queried it and said you don't expect them to be burnt and dry, reluctantly they refunded my meal and drink, then asked me to leave the premises i said i am waiting for my friend to finish her meal first. My friends omelette was undercooked and she thinks they may have used powdered egg rather than fresh eggs, after a few mouth fulls she said i cannot eat any more of this it is too under-cooked and still runny, so she finished her drink and we left. The next morning she had a rather upset stomach. The two female staff could do with a lesson in customer services. Listen and learn maria's or enjoy an early retirement.

6 pounds for 2 small flake icecreams made with yellow icy cheap ice cream that curdled in our stomaches. Ridiculously over priced.

I had always passed this place and thought it looked like the old school Italian cafes of my childhood. So today I tried it. Wish I had read TripAdvisor first. Totally average food. My daughter had two slices of ‘toast’ with cheese on top and a strawberry smoothie. The bread seemed like it had been thawed in the microwave then barely toasted, the cheese was meagre. Here smoothies was not anywhere near thick. for those two the price was £8. I had ham, egg and chips and a ‘capuccino’. The chips were the very thinly cut frozen ones , the ham just passed muster. I was charged for a meagre sachet of sauce too. The cappuccino was the kind of sachet you but in supermarkets and pour hot water over. That cost be £11.40. Never again. I am shocked at how this place survives.

My sister and myself decided to have lunch here as it was nice and quiet and the place looked spacious and bright, I had a roast chicken with salad and chips, my sister had gammon, egg, salad and chips. Coffee and a chocolate waffle for afters. The two ladies there were polite and service was quick and efficient. Food nice too. The only criticism is that it is a bit overpriced and they charge for extras like ketchup sachets which I think should be included.

What an absolute disgrace to Canterbury town. Food awful and overpriced!!! The staff well they could do with learning some customer service skills. Personally think they should just close down and let someone else have a go.

Tres de nosotros visitamos para el pescado y chip el almuerzo. El pescado estaba delicioso, pero tan caro! Nunca he comido pescado y patatas fritas como caro! ! Personal podría trabajar en sus habilidades de atención al cliente. No había y no hay exquisiteces en robot. Repentinamente preguntó qué queríamos al entrar en el establecimiento. Una pena que no explorar lugares para comer antes de colocarnos en éste.

Realmente yo aconsejaría a la gente que no compre un helado de este lugar. Pedí una bañera con un flake y esperábamos pagar alrededor de £3. Fue sólo una bañera pequeña y la señora (que era muy grosero y no interactuar) dijo £5. Lo pagué pero no sé por qué ya que realmente debería haber girado alrededor y dijo no gracias. Me siento para nuestros visitantes que quizás hubiera pensado que este es aceptable pero realmente no lo es. Este lugar debe avergonzarse en cobrar estos precios.

Caro y no mucho si la opción de menú de comida. No nos visita este nuevo ya es muy mala elección si menú :-(

Pedí a la señora ¿cuánto cuesta un helado de crema, completamente educadamente flake ignorando mi pregunta que me dio un helado en la mano. El flake es falsamente anunciaba que iba a ser 99 p, que no es el caso y, de hecho, es de 2 libras. 50 lo que es ridículo comparado con cualquier otra cosa, para ser honesto. Ella era bastante desagradable cuando le dije que el helado es falsamente anunciada en la junta y en respuesta ella me dijo que ninguno de mi negocio.

Paramos para tomar una copa con mi novia después de un día en la ciudad. Tanto las bebidas estaban bien y el personal era bueno, pero estoy de acuerdo con las críticas anteriores diciendo que son bastante caros!

Me and my friends came to this place for lunch and it looked really nice but when we got our food it was cold, hairs in our meals, scrambled egg was rubbery no taste, they haven't got signs up to say how much the drinks or the sauces are, we paid 90p for 3 ketchups! Never going here again!

The reason we visited here was its location, arrived in Canterbury and hungry Maria's was the first place on the high street. It's basic food using potentially "value" ingredients. Two white "value brand sliced loaf" bread bacon sandwiches and two cokes = £13. The two ladies serving were not rude and the food arrived quickly

Visited yesterday Canterbury yesterday. It was extremely hot and both my daughter and myself fancied an ice cream. We went to the take-away kiosk. I had one scope of rum & rasin in a normal cone and my daughter one scope of strawberry in a normal cone. This was standard ice cream - not home made or from a specialist. I nearly collapsed when the woman said that will be £6.00! Total rip off - BEWARE!

This place is ghastly. Read the reviews: there's not much more to add. The food may or may not be past its sell-by date. The place definitely is.

My wife and I thought that that the place would be an older style of cafe. Although, our three children had reservations. So fools that we were, we went in. Within minutes, three cod and chips and two chips plus two cups of tea and water for three came to £38 with the money asked for upfront. When I queried this, the price dropped to £33 - they were trying to charge for the salad. It was cold outside and we were hungry, so we went for this, although we thought it was quite expensive. WHAT MUGS WE WERE! What arrived was inedible; two of the supposed cod were clearly undercooked and appeared grey with a strange texture. Normally, I am not a person to complain, but this was too much. I took the fish back and complained, and one of the ladies who worked there picked over the fish. Eventually, we got a begrudging refund of only £8.90, which took them a calculator and two attempts to work out. I can say without any shadow of a doubt that this is the worst cafe any of us has ever been in, not only is it a complete and utter rip off, its food is of a highly dubious quality.

I went here I had two slices of cheese on toast and a coffee cost £7 , over priced ,the cheese was very thinly put on and was very salty .Did not enjoy it one bit

If being served by an indifferent waitress who is too busy picking the scab off their arm and chatting to a colleague to serve you is your thing, you are in luck, I was absolutely horrified and did not stay, we left immediately, I will not have ice cream served by someone who is picking scabs off their arms, utterly unhygienic and totally gross, environmental health should shut this place down! What was I thinking going in here in the first place?! Seeing the catalogue of horrendous reviews, how on earth is this place still open?

acceuil très froid ,les prix y sont excessifs,et nourriture très minimaliste,ex un hamburger se constitue chez eux de 2 tranche de pain et d un steack haché,16 frites dans l assiette ,les sauces sont en suppléments,les plats servis avec beaucoup d attente,et pas en meme temps,en fait il s agit d une arnaque à touriste ,ils n ont rien à faire dans la restauration et je ne comprend pas qu ils soient affichés sur la liste de tripadvisor

What was I thinking? I didn't check trip advisor before going into this dingy cafe. I asked about the size of the 'fresh salad' and was shown a large round plate. The salad was £11. Because it looked like it was going to be a fair size, I ordered it. The food bearly covered the plate and the plate was not the plate they showed me. It was a very average salad with about half a tomato on a bed of iceberg lettuce., with a small amount of ham and cheese. I should have complained, but didn't. I call this highway robbery. Don't go here. Run the other way!

Some friends and I were gobsmacked at the madly expensive prices of their frozen food that came overcooked and dry. Also their drinks. A cup of squash was nearly 1.50! A 99 cone is 2.30! Do not know how they justify their prices. Definitely walk past plenty more cafes in the high street. Poor service terrible food extortionate prices!

Etant dans la principale rue pietonne de la villle, l'endroit est bien situé. Et apparemment ils en profitent. Ok c'est un snack mais la qualité et la quantité ne sont vraiment pas de mise et le prix est élevé. La sauce est en supplément. L'accueil est comment dire... froid. Je me suis demandé si cela provenait de mon anglais limité mais voyant les autres commentaires en ce jour, je comprends mieux ou j'ai mis les pieds. J'irai ailleurs la prochaîne fois.

I'm going to be charitable and say what goes on in this . . . . 'place' . . . . are sharp practices; judging by some of the other reviews from people who had a similar experience, it's probably actually closer to out-and-out theft. My family left a matinee at the Marlowe back in the summer. We'd just moved to Canterbury, and didn't know the Westgate end of the High Street well. My son asked for a Ribena as we passed 'Maria's' - I wasn't aware of anywhere else nearby-ish where we might get one, so agreed - God knows, I wouldn't have *eaten* there, as it looked ghastly. We went to the ice-cream window and asked for a Ribena. As my husband handed over a two pound coin, the -surly - woman said 'One pound ninety.' FOR A RIBENA? Is this 2028? At least the people buying bellinis at 'Harry's Bar' *know* they're going to get ripped-off. My son had already pierced the carton otherwise I have given it back. She then looked at the coin in her hand and said 'I haven't got any change.' Really? REALLY? You can't waddle over to the till and see if you have ten pence? My husband had gone purple by this time, and I feared violence, so I just commented that her horrible, tawdry greasy spoon obviously needed the money, so not to worry about it. In fact, I daresay the owners sleep on a bed of money, the prices they charge. I suggest anyone else who has been stung, contacts Trading Standards, so that a log of all complaints, exists. DON'T GO ANYWHERE NEAR THIS PLACE!

My partner and I went in for breakfast with my 8 months old son. We ordered 2 breakfasts, egg, bacon, saussage, tomatoes and fried slice, 2 coffees and a glass of coke to my amazement it came to £20.95!!! Considering the breakfasts were priced at £4.95 I assumed she made a mistake and asked her to recalculate. we asked to swap the tomatoes with mushrooms and we're charged £1.20each, im not adverse to paying for extras but I nievly thought as we were swapping for a like for like item it wouldn't be classed as a extra. We were also charged for tomato sauce sachets, never in my life have a been charged for condiments in a CAFE!!! After her recalculation I explained that I wasn't willing to pay that and said we would find somewhere else to eat, I was told I still had to pay for the drinks which came to nearly £7, I do understand that they had already made 2 out of 3 of the drinks but considering Costa only charges £2.10 for a good coffee I don't know how they justify their prices here. I did refuse to pay for the drinks and she told me to 'just get out'. I can only assume she took offence at my shock to the prices here. We ended up eating a few doors down where we ordered the exact same breakfast for £11.90 and even gave my son some fruit for free

Lousy near poisonous food, ice cream rancid, staff not only rude, but short changed us by 15.00 and refused to open the till to check. Police refused to assist, so they got away with it. I would post them some maggots, but they've already got them (in millions)!!!

We popped here for some ice creams, giving over 5 pounds for 3 x 99's which I thought should be plenty however... They came to 6.90 and had a strange taste! Wouldn't recommend.

We bought three mr whippy ice creams and a mint chic chip cone and couldn't believe it when the total came to £10.60! Crazy money. We definitely won't be going back! Shame as we are local and could pop by any time. Will try Benji's ice cream next time, just up the road!

Overall the dinning experience was very poor, the food was basic and of poor quality ingredients. The jacket potatoes was microwaved and salad dry and brown. Deep fried sausages and one slice of bacon in a sandwich and with two sandwiches at £6.20, I feel this was really over priced. When asking the chef regarding quality, it was clearly stated this is high quality and fairly priced. I wouldn't bother. Poor quality and a real poor show!

Popped into this cafe for a coffee and sausage roll. Both were really nice. My son enjoyed an ice cream. Toilet facilities were very clean. Staff friendly.

This place has been here for years and if you venture inside you will find a clean and well cared for milk bar from the 1950's a gem of sorts, but food wise you could do better.
