We were staying here for three nights and had dinner here one night. The food is really very good. My wife had breast of chicken and I had duck leg. Both were good sized portions, my wife's with skinny fries and mine with a good selection of vegetables. The sauce for both meals was really very good indeed. The wine by the glass was also good and reasonably priced. Whilst it, perhaps, lacks some atmosphere, being a hotel dinning room, I think that for the food this place is very underrated.

Excellent dinner Saturday evening with friends. Confit duck starter was very good, crispy with a spicy sauce. I had the trio of fish. Again perfectly cooked and served with a white sauce, roasties, plus vegetables and dauphinoise potatoes. Good portions served on very hot plates. Service was friendly and professional. Happy to go back next time in the area.

Six of us went last night to try the Xmas Menu. Everything was superb ! Very friendly and helpful staff. We all tried different items from the menu - duck, lamb, turkey, sea bass, etc and everyone was extremely impressed by the delicious food - all generous portions and served piping hot. One person Gluten Free and catered for without any problems. We all agreed that this is probably the best restaurant in the area. Highly recommended restaurant and we will of course return soon.

Strange set up at this place, has a fawlty towers vibe and decor without the slapstick. Having dined at the Langham London and The Fullerton Hotel, Singapore prior to arriving in Cockermouth, we were (as you may imagine) rather surprised by the choice of waiting staff and lack of diners at this restaurant. To be fair the food was decent enough, however the front of house was slightly comedic, and I suspect our wine may have came from a box tap. As we soon realised the whole area is like stepping back 30 years in time.

I’ve eaten at the Manor House a few years ago for a special occasion and recall the food being very good. We visited on a rainy September evening for the midweek menu. It’s unbelievable value with three course for £27. The food is literally amazing, everything we ordered was cooked to perfection. My usually hard to please wife gave it 10/10 and rated the dauphinois potatoes as the best she has ever eaten. Often with midweek set menus the portions are reduced and the quality of food is not as good as al a carte. Not the case at the Manor House, we left full and the food was superb. A strong recommend.

This is a lovely place and we have only recently "discovered" it, having lived in the town for 5 years, and the area for 18! We pass it often and had thought about going for quite some time, eventually taking the plunge last month.... what had we waited for??? It was extremely good, quite good value for money and delicious menu and food. We have since been back twice and it is fast becoming our favourite place to eat.

You have to hand it to the Manor House in general and Eddie & Carol Anne in particular. Carol Anne runs the front of house with aplomb, always makes everyone feel welcome and at home. Eddie performs the magic in the kitchen, being consistent is one thing being consistently superb is quite another. This for us is the gold standard the restaurant we judge ALL others by, never ever have we had even the slightest disappointment when dining here. Highly recommended.

We were a group of 9 visiting the beautiful Lake District for a wedding. From my initial contact I found all of the staff at Manor House extremely helpful, friendly and accommodating. The hotel is absolutely charming; it has a warm and homely feel and the immaculate, quirky period decor is delightful! We were all very comfortable in our well equipped rooms and pleasantly surprised with the excellent food on offer - Edward (the proprietor & Swiss trained chef) not only served up a first class dinner menu but also effortlessly russled up delicious veggie/vegan dishes with pretty much no notice. Breakfast was a winner too... the extensive choice of home-made and locally sourced produce was throughly enjoyed by all.. perfectly cooked and served with a smile! Kane, the Manager, was a star and he made sure everyone in our slightly chaotic group was well looked after and had a fantastic time. Thank you all at Manor House for making a very special occasion extra special!

We always go to the Manor House when we are over visiting our friends in Whitehaven and have never been disappointed with the meal. The bread comes in the form of buns half white/brown and is made by the owner Edward who is the chef/owner. We all had different starters, two had King Prawns with Mussels. My friend had Duck and I had Smoked Salmon with Scampi , for the mains we all decided on the Turbot in Chardonnay Sauce. The food is freshly prepared and there is a nice rest between courses. We did not have a dessert as we all too full, so we selected to have coffee in the Lounge.

Four of us visited here for a meal on a Saturday evening. The decor is interesting and not out of place in the grand building, if a little tired. We were early diners so the place was empty when we arrived- but full when we left. The staff were very attentive and helpful. The food was splendid. However, the 8 green lipped mussels and about 15 king prawns in a lovely garlicy sauce, was a huge starter. One of our party had the confit duck cakes with asian spices and pronounced that it was beautiful. The home made bread and butter was irresistible, so stay clear of this too as you will need room! We all had steak following recommendations- 3 fillet and one sirloin. All were a very good size and cooked to perfection! The mushroom sauce was very tasty, but too large a portion! The individual tray of home cooked fresh veg included dauphinoise potatoes, colcannon, carrots, broccoli, and mange tout- all cooked to perfection. For research purposes (!) we shared the assiette of deserts, all of which delighted the palate! The bill was not cheap, but as seasoned cooks and eaters we all felt that it was excellent value for money as the food was fresh, well prepared and presented! Well done the Manor House. We will be back!

My wife and I were staying locally on a B & B basis and opted to have dinner at the Manor House restaurant on one of the evenings - wise choice! With off road car parking, the Manor House restaurant has an air of grandeur, yet there is nothing overly formal. Our orders were taken in the lounge bar and we were shown to our table shortly before the food was served. We both opted for the breast of duck which was delicious. We were asked beforehand how well done we would like it cooked and it was served exactly as ordered, accompanied by a generous selection of vegetables. There was a reasonably wide selection of desserts but we were drawn to the medley of 5 miniature desserts which can only be described as fantastic. Wine was reasonably priced and the service excellent.

The food was sensational - my steak was cooked to perfection and my partners lamb was beautiful too. The restaurant is 'old school - waiters / waitresses stood watching waiting to clear your plates. You definately feel special here ! I would suggest my only reccomendation would be to - do out the hotel as it is a bit stuck in the past - the decor of the restaurant - mahogany chairs. For the price and the venue I feel that it could do with a re-vamp to reflect the £100 price thag that we paid.Could not fault the food though - absolutly devine !xx

We ate dinner here for the first time, having seen the building many times from the outside: a mid-nineteenth century Grecian villa. Inside the décor is traditional, in that pattern and colour are used liberally. Mint green ceilings are in evidence throughout. The restaurant was busy with older local couples, suggesting a loyal customer base. It is quite expensive for a regular meal out.The food was on the whole well done: we had lamb and duck breast accompanied by classic sauces and excellent dauphinois potatoes. However, this came after starters which were less assured. Smoked salmon is difficult to get wrong, but it was a surprise to see it accompanied by deep fried prawns in a very spicy batter, beetroot in vinegar and a salad dressed over-acidulously. Perhaps a different chef is devising and preparing the starters? For dessert, I chose the salted caramel chocolate tart, which looked wonderful but was quite a challenge to eat. Other choices seemed better, although I have never seen crème brulee served with ice-cream before.

Very impressed with our meal here. Good company helped too! The surroundings weren't "to our taste" but then in a way it's nice to go somewhere that hasn't been given a corporate minimalist makeover. The food was very much to our taste.Missed out on starters so will have to go back to try them ..but then again need to leave room for the "suprise plate" for pud - selection of about 5 mini puds, really good value at £6.50.(Fab Creme brulee and it wasn't very mini) What impressed me most was that even though the steak was meant to come with veg my friend wanted chips, onion rings and mushrooms -with no fuss at all that's what he got - specially cooked on a very busy (pretty much full) Sat eve. Main courses were great too - lovely sauces, meat cooked to perfection and the best roast potatoes I've ever had (sorry father-in law, yours are now 2nd best) We don't eat out very often but when we do we'll be back.

One of the disadvantages of living in a small town like Cockermouth is that there is a paucity of good restaurants.Travelling further afield for supper is difficult because I will not drink and drive and a taxi would see the cost of the evening almost doubling so for routine occasions I dine out locally. It was a tuesday evening. There were no other diners apart from myself and Kit. We chose a table near the bay window. We took the drinks we had orfdered from the bar through to the dining area and I ordered another bottle of wine for us to enjoy with our meal.i would rate the food here as consistent , but sadly that does not lift it higher than a six or seven out of ten.The best part of the meal was the dessert. Price wise it didnt burn a hole in my pocket , but then the meal didnt set my taste buds alight with excitement either .I have moved from Cockermouth now but if I ever returned there I would I suppose find it necessary to dine here again

Edward Bassam is rightly proud of the food he creates at the Manor House. Everything he serves is prepared by him alone. Because of this the menu is limited but you can guarantee that all the produce is fresh and presented at it's best. The locally produced steaks are exceptional quality and at under £17 are great value coming as they do with a selection of potato and vegetables. I can also recommend the duck both as a main course and as a crispy aromatic salad starter.Portions are on the larger size and I would recommend the Manor House surprise dessert which is a collection minuature desserts. Then again, I would recommend the chocolate torte as well.......or the raspberry Romanoff! I would recommend everything Edward produces and I would recommend that you book to make sure of a table. If you go to one restaurant in and around Cockermouth for the finest of dining, make it the Manor House.

Walked from Keswick centre to Nichol End Marina. A lovely walk but was glad when I arrived at the marina cafe. Roger (jolly Roger) welcomed me in and was so helpful and friendly. It was quiet as the season is coming to an end. I had an oat milk coffee and a raisin sticky toffee scone. It was so big! Put half in a bag to take home. Plenty of choice of scones all fresh and looking delicious. Prices were so reasonable. Roger then gave me a ride in his boat across Derwent Water. He’s such a nice man. It made my day to find a gem of a place. Would def recommend if in the area. Will return and try out the boating/canoeing etc next year.
