The hotel is an ideal location for a lovely meal in Guildford, right in the heart of the town. The service was friendly (and fast), and we were made to feel very welcome. Food was great - will come back again.

We stayed at the Mandolay. We had food both nights, everything was great and the service was very good, friendly and attentive.

I visited with my partner for afternoon tea in the restaurant and I must say we thoroughly have enjoyed it. The food was fresh, tasty and well presented. The service was very good, all staff were friendly and attentive. We will return again!

Have stayed before. Always a great place to eat. I must say the breakfast quality has improved. The host and service was very good.

Visited for pre dinner drinks. Waitress may have been new maybe? But sadly she was very poor. Ordered cocktails and we asked if a virgin mojito (on the menu) could be made with alcohol. She said no! Really! When I pointed out it only involved adding spirit she checked at the bar. When it came it was very poor quality. Second round we decided on gin. Ordered our selections and a while later told they didn’t have the tonics on the menu any more ??? After waiting another 15 minutes were tempted to cancel the order but it arrived a few seconds later. No lemon, lime, garnish. Nothing! At these prices in a 4* hotel this is completely unacceptable. Would not recommend. Sorry.

We had an early pre-theatre dinner (this venue is almost opposite G-Live so a great location for pre-theatre eats). Disappointed to see we were the only customers so therefore the atmosphere was a wee bit lacking however the food was excellent. All dishes beautifully prepared and presented. Nothing fancy, the good ingredients just spoke for themselves. Excellent and attentive service (would expect as we were the only ones dining) we would definitely visit again for a pre-theatre dinner.

Booked the standard afternoon tea at the Mandolay on a dismal February afternoon. I was surprised to see that there were pay and display machines on the hotel forecourt. It was pouring with rain but I did my best to scan the small print on the machines to see if diners or residents get a discount for parking. Sadly not , nor does the machine give change! I decided to pay by card, £4.50 for 2 hours which I hoped would be a suitable time for us to partake of the tea time offerings. We were welcomed by a friendly receptionist who asked how we were. Actually soaking wet but that wasn't her fault. We were shown to our seats and a tea menu was brought to us. The tea menu itself was presented beautifully in a clasped box. Sample teas are contained in screw top jars within the box and we were invited to unscrew the jars to smell the teas. The teas offered were wide, varied and also unlimited. The restaurant was quiet with just a few friends gathered, sampling the afternoon tea as were we. The table linen was clean and crisp and service excellent. In due course a stand was brought to us with the usual fare of sandwiches, cakes and scones. There were 2 fingers each of smoked salmon, coronation chicken, egg mayo and beef and horseradish. Before we started on the sweet items, we were asked if we would like more sandwiches but we politely declined. There were warm homemade scones, plain and fruited, (a little on the dry and heavy side) along with clotted cream and strawberry jam. Patisserie included a macaron, strawberry tartlet and chocolate cake each. The chocolate cake in particular was very light and delicate. We ordered more tea and the waitress very kindly provided a box so we could take home the strawberry tartlets that our tummies could not find a home for. The afternoon tea itself was nicely presented and plentiful and the service good. The decor in the hotel was not very cosy and I would imagine that the hotel would lend itself more to business or conference delegates. The parking situation was a bit off putting, this is the first time I have had to pay to park my car before dining in a restaurant or partaking of afternoon tea. I appreciate that the hotel is fairly close to Guildford Town Centre and they would need a deterrent to stop people just parking their car at the hotel and going shopping. However, I think it would be appropriate to offer free or discounted parking to residents or diners. Whilst the afternoon tea was acceptable, I think there are better alternatives around.

I am gluten and dairy intolerant. Today I had the afternoon tea at the Mandolay hotel and I was so pleased to have been served an amazing selection of gluten free sandwiches, cakes, scones and pastries as well as almond milk with tea! Thank you for making my experience such an easy one - looking for good gluten free food can be tricky so to find a place that catered so well to my needs as well as making delicious food was so great. Thanks again and we’ll definitely come back!

Lovely hotel, positioned in the edge of the town centre but everything is accessible. Food is great, rooms are very comfortable and staff were friendly. Very happy with the service, thank you.

The food we had was good, the only drawback is that it had nothing to do with the menu available here. We went for dinner and they had grilled sirloin steak and burger. As a main, they also had few courses, such as fish and chips and traditional pub food. Again, nothing like lobster, quail etc as described in the menu here. First time at The Mandolay and we were definitely impressed with the free-flowing prosecco afternoon tea. Friendly staff (Katie) attended to us promptly and efficiently. Well presented and tasty sandwiches, scones and cakes. Would definitely recommend this to anyone and we will be going again.

I was 'treated' to afternoon tea,one plate of sandwiches between 4,2 cake stands with a poor selection of cakes the only saving grace was the scones.as we were finishing the staff had started to dismantle the surrounding tables!!! I didn't want to upset my children who were paying for this but this is not what I would expect no matter how much you pay.

Whilst the food was good the restaurant was woefully understaffed. The wine list was extensive but I had initially booked at table for 4 at 8pm. They rang to say they had a large party in at 7.30 could we make it 8.30 - OK. We didn't order until after 9 and didn't finish the meal until closer to 11.30. Much too long waiting for our food. The ambience was sterile and impersonal. It was a typical hotel restaurant with little to recommend it.

I took my family for an impromptu afternoon tea between Xmas and New Year. I thought it might be crowded but it was an oasis of peace amid the mad rush in town. The staff were attentive and brought us lashings of tea to go with tasty sandwiches, scones/cream/butter/jam and an assortment of little cakes and festive muffins. Lovely!

Very disappointing never again. <br />Scallops were overcooked,ordered two fillet steaks medium and they arrived rare ,they were taken away without an apology , and we had to wait 15 minutes whilst they were sliced into smaller pieces and cooked they didn&#039;t even make new ones the steak was also very chewy for a fillet steak. Which the waitress told us was normal for 36 day aged fillet (interesting). <br />My wife and daughter ate their food whilst we waited for ours. <br /><br />No apology for keeping us waiting for the food and no offer of a an appeasement/discount nothing,worst service I have ever experienced at a two rosette restaurant .<br />And it&#039;s not as though they were busy <br />Just the four of us in the whole restaurant. <br />Paid £200 for a terrible meal and experience then left. <br /><br />I am leaving this review to warn others and not to benefit me in anyway , as I will never return .

Both the breakfast and evening meal was very good and very tasty. Breakfast is either continental or continental and English breakfast which was expensive for both. Options of either might get more customers.

My Wife and I stayed here for originally 2 nights that we extended to 4 nights (after a room change).

Possible the best Restaurant in Guildford regarding the quality of food, setting, and service. And I should know as I have dined numerous times in every restaurant Guildford has to offer! To be honest the quality of food is virtually on par with drakes in Ripley but served at a decent price!

Great food and cosy seating - beautiful terrace area for outside drinks . Can eat brasserie style food in bar if you prefer to not sit in the dining room which is great if your on business.

I went with 3 friends for a much needed treat and the Mandolay delivered in every way. We love afternoon tea and this was the very best we have had in the area and a bargain at £17 by comparison to other places. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the food plentiful (a rarity in afternoon tea!) and an extensive tea list to choose from, we had a doggy back each to take home! I have already asked my husband to take me back and maybe add in the champagne version! The atmosphere in the bar was relaxed and everywhere spotless, it's very unusual that I cannot find fault with something but I really can't with afternoon tea at The Mandolay, five stars from me!

We booked afternoon tea for 4 people, including 2 over 90 years old, and it proved to be a triumph. Staff were attentive and friendly and the food was excellent. We each had a gondola style cake stand with sandwiches, scones, cup cakes and small fancy cakes along with cream, jams and a choice of teas. Doggy bags required by all.

Lovely stylish restaurant only 10 minutes walk from the centre of Guildford.

We ate at in the bar in the evening, expecting high standards once again from an AA rosette award for dining. We sat at a high table for 2 between the bar and the main restaurant and the staff were very polite informing us the chef was absent due to illness.

Food was good and the one waiter was friendly but service was terrible.

We came here on New Years Eve 2015 for the hot buffet dinner & disco evening and we were all pleasantly surprised at how good the evening was. The venue itself was beautifully decorated appearing fresh, clean & modern & as soon as you entered a good atmosphere appealed.

We went as a group for tea and apart from being a nightmare place to park I thought it was totally lacking in atmosphere . I thought the tea was good ,but a ridiculous set up trying to put a large cake stands on a narrow tables for everyone , we had to keep moving things off the tables to accommodate them . It was quite frankly a ridiculous situation . It should have been thought out better . I also thought the waitresses were lacking in any personality and a bit clueless . I wouldn't recommend it as there are much more relaxing places to have tea without the hassle of trying to park in Guildford .

Excellent selection, efficient but unobtrusive service and great value for money. The scones were massive, warm and served with home made jam and clotted cream. There were so many cakes and pastries that we all took some home with us. Highly recommended.

I hosted a business lunch for around 15 people at the hotel in November, the events co-ordinator Kat was extremely helpful and showed great attention to detail. I would definitely return and recommend this venue for business lunches

My only complaint is that there was too much. One would be more than enough for 2 people. Excellent pastry chefs - lovely fresh scones, beautiful little cakes plus carrot cake, Victoria sponge and fruit cake. I have the capacity to eat large meals but was completely floored. The gave us the remaining cakes to take home!!!!

Went here for a meal with friends - we won't be hurrying back - food ok but nothing special and despite us being one of only 3 tables taken in the restaurant, they still managed to get one of our orders wrong several times resulting in one of us having to eat our meal when everyone else had already finished theirs.

The service was exceptional without being intrusive. There was plenty of food. The venue modern with clean rest rooms.

Visited the Mandolay for afternoon tea on a Saturday in a group of 6. All of the sandwiches and cakes were delicious and beautifully presented. The room is nicely decorated and we were not disturbed by other customers. There was so much food we spent a few hours and did not feel at all rushed. Staff were friendly and polite, but we felt that we were left waiting for more tea for long periods of time, had to wave a member of staff over.

Went for afternoon tea with a colleague from work a few weeks ago, and this was such great value for money. This HAS to be the best in Guildford. The waitress was lovely. She was polite and attentive, but not overly so. Food was good, especially the macaroons and cakes. And there was real clotted cream for the scones (I mention this having had very disappointing afternoon teas recently in Devon and Jersey that were served with whipped cream. I mean, really?) And what was left was put in a doggy bag to take home. I don't understand why this place isn't pushing its afternoon tea forward. I live nearby and hadn't even realised this was an option, I heard about it through word of mouth.

10 (8 adults 2 children under 3) of us met up here for afternoon tea, and it was excellent! 1of our party was gluten free, nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely go back, or recommend, excellent value for money.

The food was really good and we both had a great night. We both had scallops to start followed by steak. The steaks were both cooked to perfection. Our only minor comment would be that whilst they were well cooked, the scallops felt a little stingy for the money, compared to what we have enjoyed at similar restaurants. It was also a shame the main restaurant wasn&#039;t very busy (there were only two other couples) but it still had a nice setting/atmosphere and it was a really nice meal. I guess it is just a bit out of the town centre and misses out on some of that trade. We would definitely go back.

If you like steak then this is a good place to eat The menu is not the fullest in the world , but what they have is not bad . Quick service good waiters and a nicely decorated room.

Afternoon tea here is very relaxing and enjoyable. You have a very attractive 3-tier tray each, full of sandwiches, scones and cakes. They were all delicious. There is a nice selection of teas to choose from and the service is excellent.

Best stay in Guildford. Not cheap really, but Guildford is expensive everywhere. Only decent hotel can walk into town.

our party of 10 had a wonderful afternoon tea here. When it arrived we really thought that each tea was for 2 to share, but no, it was an amazing quantity ! I think we took about half of it home! Delicious food, and really good service. And all for £17 a head. Really recommended.

This hotel is ideally situated and in easy walking distance to the town centre.

This would be five stars if it was not for the Chocolate Torte which was very heavy. My Husbands steak was cooked to perfection and my fish was very nice.

The afternoon is reasonably priced. We met with our friend from Norway. The food is lovely and good portion size. We didn't manage to finish it. They also do coffee if one does not fancy tea. The scones are a bit big which kind of makes it look even bigger given that the cakes and sandwiches are of smaller sizes. The ambience is quiet but there were only two tables - ours and another table of two.

At first looks the brasserie is a beautiful place to eat. Don't be fooled. During breakfast staff ate in the kitchen area (in full view of guests), chewed gum whilst taking your order, took forever to clean tables and upset another guest by called her 'sir'. She was so annoyed that she physically got up and left the restaurant.

We went to a half empty Mandalay for lunch. I wish I haven't bothered. The staff are rude and uninterested. The lack of basic communication skills makes the whole experience miserable. The food order came out incorrect several times and 3 out of the 6 mains were very cold.

My mum and I visited Mandolay Brasserie for afternoon tea. We were very impressed with the great service we received and the fabulous food!

I can say that the service we received during our 3 night stay for my daughters wedding was very very good. The staff really worked hard and looked after us our family and wedding guests.

My mum, dad and I went to The Mandolay in Guildford today. I saw the restaurant was empty and despite this the waitress said 'Have you booked a table?'. I said I had but was not impressed as she did not welcome us or even say good afternoon! We were taken to the restaurant area and said we could sit where we liked. When I chose a corner table, she said it had been booked for a wine tasting! We were there for over an hour and no-one arrived for that wine tasting, so why were we given a choice to site where we liked?.

Two weeks ago I went their for breakfast on my way to work, food was delicious and for a good value, I will definitely go back !

We visited the restaurant on Valentine&#039;s Day. We are not residents of Guildford, so we selected the venue on-line and were not disappointed. The special occasion menu was well presented and of very good quality, featuring octopus carpaccio (something I have not seen in the UK before) and including an extra sorbet course. The dining room was quite full but airy the service was attentive and the restaurant was clean and well laid out.<br />A very good experience overall and worth a visit if you are in Guildford - the restaurant is located in the centre of town and easily accessible.

I was awoken in the hotel today at 5am with banging doors which continued sporadically followed by hoovering of the ladies lavatory at 7.30 am and I was really looking forward to breakfast .Can you imagine my surprise on arrival for breakfast which is Continental (all cooked food costs) to find that they are unwilling to include a latte and even considered charging for porridge .- my only request save 2 mon slices/apple juice.The charge of £10 for this style of breakfast is expensive . How short sighted and mean of the restaurant manager to adopt this attitude.

I came here with my parents and boyfriend in September, I'm a vegan and the menu didn't have anything that could cater for me. So we asked the chef if he could prepare something for me. He was so lovely and accommodating. He made me a beautiful fish of beetroot rice, caramelised shallots, grilled asparagus, roast cherry tomatoes and cabbage. It was incredible! The rest of the party's food was lovely too. (I may have stolen some of my dads chips and they were perfect)

Paid £8 for a small panini which came with a minuscule amount of vegetable crisps and a few leaves. Used to be able to get a decent sized lunch with a choice of chips, crisps or salad. Premium prices for an average venue.

We went here for a celebratory family lunch and it was great! It was booked by family visiting from afar (we are local) and I was slightly apprehensive as it wasn't somewhere I knew of and online reviews of the hotel accomodation were generally dire.

I have now been to the Mandolay Hotel a number of times for business meetings and have found the buffer breakfast to be consistently high quality food. With nice friendly approachable staff who genuinely take care and attention to ensure each visit is as good as my last.

I have stayed in the Mandolay a few times over the last few years and always look forward to returning, the staff are very friendly. the rooms have a very stylish homely feel, always clean. the food has always been very tasty i noramlly get room service due to being alone on business! free wifi and walking distance in to the town so its an ideal hotel for if your working or fancied a weekend away
