The food was nice however the service wasn’t great today. Very slow. No pepper on the table. Items of food arrived after we’d finished eating. No front of house staff to welcome you or indeed a ‘Thank you’ for visiting when departing. Staff didn’t even mention ‘Happy Birthday’ despite noting this was a celebration meal when making the reservation - Not the usual experience. Having said that - It’s a lovely venue in a great location and it’s usually lovely so we will be back - hopefully with better luck next time.

“The Ivy” Expectations? Warm, welcoming, great food and service? Not in Guildford! Attitude, missing drinks, cold food, even the cloakroom attendant couldn’t bring himself to say please or thank you! A birthday ruined, would have rather gone to KFC or McDonalds and therefore not been disappointed!

First off I’ll tell you that I am a local. I have lived here for 5 years now. I know most of the restaurants around Guildford pretty well. I can walk to most of them and I know where to go for what. For instance, I go to the Ivy castle view for the vibe, atmosphere and ambiance. I chose the Ivy to take some visitors, from outside the Uk, for a late lunch today. I wanted to show them one of our most attractive restaurants. I already know and think that the food is just ok, not spectacular; so I was really taking them for the experience. The drinks and bar creations are very much worth a visit in their own right as well as the homemade sourdough, however. I also need to say that I always get very kind and attentive service; today was no different. Nevertheless, I have a complaint today. We were rushed out of our table and our reservation was not until after 1pm. I absolutely can’t stand this about restaurants here in Guildford ( there are more) and the uk. So much so, that I stop frequenting ones that give a time limit. I have lived and dined in Europe for over 25 years and any Swiss, German, Italian, French, Austrian or Greek ( and more) restaurant would never dream of putting a time limit on their patrons. It is thought extremely rude. And it is. We just spent over 150 pounds for only three people and they want us out to use our table to pull next to another for a larger group. They did, graciously, offer to move us to another place to continue our afternoon. I also need to say that the gentleman who came to inform us was very kind about it; I could tell he did not want to be asking ( so again it’s an uncomfortable policy for the servers as well). The practice of an hour and a half dining limit itself is extremely rude and only services to gain more money and is not designed to keep loyal customers. No one wants to watch a clock when out for a “pleasant” afternoon of socializing over a meal and drinks. Furthermore, I was not told when I made the reservation this was their protocol, I’ve never run into this issue at the Ivy before today. Today it was almost, as if on the dot, we were asked to move. We all had lost the desire to stay any longer, so we asked for the check Instead. After I signed the check and we were gathering our things preparing to go… two servers came over to begin to clear our table. Again, her words to us were very kind but the action was extremely rude and not well received by any of us. I had to ask her to wait and give us a moment to get our jackets on and gather our bags. We were trying to stand and put on jackets and she’s reaching for plates! Manners are not just expressed in words, they must be expressed in action as well. Dining out should be relaxing and designed for absolute pleasure in all aspects, just as I have experienced pretty much everywhere else around Europe. I feel like too many Uk restaurants have jumped on that hurry hurry more more bandwagon. Sadly, the Ivy has done just that.

Attended your Guildford restaurant on Saturday 13th April 2024 for afternoon tea. I have to say, out of all the afternoon teas we have had, this was the most mediocre of them all and I am extremely disappointed given your reputation as a brand. The sandwiches were sparse and mostly tasteless, the cucumber sandwich in particular was awful and the bread was stale. The most frustrating thing of all is the complete lack of tea/coffee? We had to ask over halfway through the afternoon tea for some tea/coffee as no one had brought any over nor offered any. I don’t think I have ever been to an afternoon tea where this hasn’t been offered. We had attended to bring our friend for her birthday and I have to say I was highly disappointed and will not recommend your afternoon tea to anyone.

I have been visiting the Ivy for a few years and really love the afternoon tea as a treat with guests when we visit. Unfortunately today is the first time our experience wasn’t positive. There were 3 of us and we were sat on the bench seating with two odd shape tables that were different sizes pushed together. None of us were facing each other and I had to rearrange one of the table as it was so wobbly. Why sister and I were celebrating my mums Mother’s Day treat. The afternoon tea arrived and I had told them both how amazing the chicken in truffle oil with brioche roll is the best. My mother had a few bites and said she didn’t like the taste so I went to try it, as I took a bite I was hit the most awful smell. I took a little bite and it’s was foul. The chicken must have gone bad. It’s smelt disgusting and tasted really bad. We called the waitress over and discretely told her about the taste and smell. She smelt it infront of us and pulled away with a grimace as it was such a strong horrible smell. The waitress took our plates with the sandwich roll on. We were then left without a plate for quite a while. When she returned she told us she could not replace the chicken and the mix was already done so it would all taste and smell the same. We asked if we could have something else and she said they would bring up another option. We had to ask for more plates which took a while. Another staff member bought over 3 of the salmon sandwiches (my mum doesn’t really like fish but has eaten the first one in our selection) this was really disappointing to us to just be given the same sandwich we had already eaten. It he made staff member didn’t apologise or give an option for a replacement and said he thinks we aren’t used to the truffle oil taste and smell!!! I’ve had that sandwich many times and it never tasted or smelt like that. Off chicken has a very distinct smell. It was very hard to enjoy the rest of the afternoon tea the smell of the off chicken was just stuck in our noses and my mum felt quite poorly thinking about the mouthfuls of bad chicken she had consumed. We tried hard to enjoy the rest of our visit and the beautiful sweet treats in the selection but the experience had been ruined. The bill was charged at full rate with a 12.5% service charge. We feel we shouldn’t have been charged full after what happened and feel disappointed with how we were treated. I have been so many times and always had such wonderful service and amazing food. I am really sad this has put me off of ever coming back.

I have been here many times and will defiantly be back again but a few things have changed and im not sure why, Firstly I can't fault the food its great and the presentation is great its tasty and good ingredients used as normal. This time tho it was a Thursday evening, on arrival im normally asked if I would like to leave my coat in the cloakroom and this didn't happen this time. We were sat in a booth so couldn't use the back of the chair to hang a coat so we ended up with a pile of coats on the booth. Not a big problem just a bit disappointing. The only other negative was after finishing mains and ordering desert we asked to see the wine list and it never came so we didn't have any after dinner drinks like we normally would. Don't let these 2 negatives distract from the great restaurant tho the food is great.

Definitely the best Ivy of all locations both for the ivy and ivy Asia (Guildford the best) and I have been to the majority. I just find it over priced and will do every time. It's one of those places when you expect the bill to be about 20 per cent less than when it arrives. Drinks and certain dishes are over priced. I hope they find a balance going forward to preserve longevity and repetition for customers.

Very pleasant experience for a birthday lunch during the week. Coats taken on arrival by calm and assured front of house staff. Food was excellent and the wine served at a good temperature. Our host was Spencer who graciously fielded my request to alter the set menu. If you give waiting staff the autonomy to be flexible and to work on an individual basis with customers, then they can have the confidence to trust their own judgement on how best to serve their clients. In Spencer’s case, his experience and his remit to work flexibly (i.e. not read from a script or a company policy manual) made a vast difference to our dining experience. It’s this kind of flexible and discreet yet thorough service that promotes recommendations to others, beyond food, decor, ambience etc. Well done Ivy recruitment and thank you Spencer.

We go to this Ivy a few times each year and our latest visit was surprisingly poor. The restaurant itself was also the quietest we have ever seen it on a weekend. The steak tartare is always a favourite but now they have started serving it table side. This is awful and completely unnecessary and has basically ruined one of their best dishes. The crab starter was served in a ridiculously over the top display, again just ruining a perfectly good dish. No idea why they have pivoted to this style over substance approach but it's not good and the empty tables on a weekend evening says it all. The service was also poor, they forgot our wine meaning we had are starters on the table when we had to remind them about the wine which was rushed over. Also, its the first time I have ever seen them leave tables dirty after the guests have left. The table next to us had dirty plates with half eaten food on them when we say down and were only cleared about 20 minutes into our meal. I really hope they have not ruined this restaurant.

Nice restaurant. Always full at all times of the day. Food is generally OK but the steak with a sauce is now getting a bit on the expensive side passing the £32 mark for an 8oz sirloin with sauce. However, this is another restaurant where the menu hasn’t changed in several years. Wine is a bit on the steep side, too. And, for the second time running, we had our nibbles, starters, Champagne and main course wine all brought at the same time. Customers don’t want this as it appears they are being rushed. Having said all that, the food is good and the toilets and public areas are always immaculate. I will be back as I have a £100 voucher to spend with a free bottle (not glass!) of Champagne. I can’t miss that.

I’ve been here a few times and usually have a good experience. This time was disappointing. We had a party of five booked for 19.30. We were shown to a table which was way too small for our group. I asked if we could move but was told it was not possible. The table was suitable for a couple, not five. Inevitably when our starters arrived we had to juggle everything around to clear some space. This went on throughout the evening, moving the puzzle pieces to accommodate our food/drinks. I friend asked for a Moscow Mule cocktail but was told if it wasn’t on the drinks list it was not possible. I made the point that it’s quite a simple drink to make and could he ask the bar staff first rather than refusing. Low and behold they made it without fuss. Clearly the waiter wasn’t best pleased the rest of the evening. I had the veal cheeks special which was supposed to be in a horseradish and mustard sauce – powerful flavours. I couldn’t taste either. The rest of the party enjoyed their fillet steaks and the Primitivo red was a nice drop.

I visited The Ivy Guildford on Friday, 9th February. As I suspected the paltry GF options is not just restricted to The Ivy, Windsor, (see my review of 28th January) but the poor GF appears to pervade “The Ivy” Chain; except that at Guildford, the situation was even worse than Windsor! I attempted to order the Bang Bang Salad as a starter, but was told this what was not GF. What in a salad contains so much gluten that could not simply be removed without substantially affecting the dish?? The 2 GF ‘starters’ available were not appealing AND why should I pay around £10 for a dish that I did not want? Zero imagination (aka lack of caring) from the waiter/chef. So while my companions savoured their beautiful looking starters, I was left without any food whatsoever. Leaving a hungry customer without food is an appalling situation, especially for a premier restaurant. After my experience at Guildford, I will not be visiting any of "The Ivy" chain anytime soon. PS I did write to The Ivy CEO a week ago. I am awaiting a response.

First time dining at the Ivy Castle View. We attended as a group for Brunch Sunday Mid-Morning. Venue is well presented. I did notice some cobwebs hanging from one of the lights attaching itself to one of the plants - other than that looked clean. We were seated in immediately and given time to peruse the menu. Our orders were then collected by one of the waiting staff. I ordered the Full English Breakfast for £15.95 and an Americano. I also asked for additional Black Pudding and toast and was told that additional toast was complementary. The food and Drinks arrived in good time. The Coffee was hot and very tasty. The Breakfast above average, but not 10/10. I asked for another coffee and toast part way though my meal. There seemed to be a good amount of staff serving, however, the toast and coffee didn't arrive, so I had to ask again 15 mins later. Then the waiter went off and chased this up before returning with the additional items. After breakfast our table was cleared and we waited around 25-30 mins before having to ask for our bill. I was surprised to see on bill that I had been charged an extra £4 for a slice of black pudding, given that the entire breakfast of Bacon, Sausages, Black Pudding, Beans, Eggs, Tomato, Mushroom and Toast with butter, only equated to £15.95, so that was a little off-putting and I wouldn't usually mind, however, the black pudding was thin, dry and tasteless - not the best I have ever had. I meant to bring it up when paying, but there was such a delay between asking for the bill, getting the bill and paying that it slipped my mind - but definitely something to watch out for in the future.

One of my fav places to eat! The cheese soufflé is to die for and if you love a spicy Bloody Mary you’ll be in heaven!

Normally always our go-to restaurant, but after last nights visit we won't be in any rush to return in a hurry. Upon arrival we were meet by very loud music playing which meant that everyone was having to raise their voice to make themselves heard! Background music is so important to add to the atmosphere but when you can't hear yourselves speaking above the noise level....somethings seriously wrong! Service was surprisingly fine during the very busy mid evening period but strangely enough as the restaurant slowly started to empty around 9.30pm the standard of service dropped dramatically. We waited SO long for drink re-fills at one point we had to walk in search of finding a member of staff? The dessert order was wrong when it arrived and the excuse the waitress gave was she couldn't hear what we'd said?? Slightly worrying when the staff themselves were clearly struggling to hear customers over the din! All in all not a good experience and with all the competition in Guildford now The Ivy seriously need to start upping their game!

Wish I could award 6 stars in all areas! Wonderful, friendly, funny and attentive service from all staff. Great value menu, but in surroundings that feel so decadent - I couldn't stop looking around the restaurant to take it all in! And, of course, everything was delicious, with well thought out combinations and textures.

Was asked my name three times, wasn't asked once if everything was ok, wasn't asked if we would like anymore drinks and even though we refused the complimentary tap water, it was still poured into a glass with the remaining water in a glass bottle with water marks around the top, scones were amazing but way too much chocolate for the rest of the deserts.

80th birthday celebration, thought we'd go somewhere different. The restaurant looks a little tired. A lick of paint and some new tables would go a long way. We dressed up as it said smart casual. However we felt a little out of place as people were in jeans and trainers around us. The staff were very attentive and could not be faulted. In that respect it did feel a step up from your local gastro pub. The food was nice (what i had anyway). Salt and pepper squid was nice, a choice of dip would have been nice as i am not keen on wasabi. However the squid itself was very nice. I had the Keralen duck curry which again was very flavourful. My only criticism was the amount of rice which was a little lacking. Others on my table had fish and chips and really enjoyed that. My daughter said her burger was not as nice as Byron/GBK. The large bar had nothing on tap which was dissapointing, but they did have a good selection of bottled beers and ciders with some from local Hogs Back Brewery and didnt charge silly prices. Overall at this price point i would reccomend to others who want something a little more special than a pub but not too expensive.

We went for dinner as a pre-Christmas treat with a friend. Time 5.30 pm. We have been to the Ivy restaurants on numerous occasions in Covent Garden and Cobham with a smattering of other venues once. We have always enjoyed it. This time we recommended it to our friend. He is young and enjoyed the atmosphere. The table for 3 was minute. Really hard to get plates on it. My cold fish and chips had to be returned. Having to wait for a replacement meant I ate alone. To be fair, my meal was credited to the bill. I was therefore quite surprised when it still came to over £50 per head. With one bottle of wine for 3! We had friends from overseas on 5th Jan. Booked for dinner. Group of 4. Wanted something glamorous and special as they were visiting us at our new home near Farnham. Time 8.15. We were given a tiny table in the corner by the windows. The noise was horrendous. Thumping nightclub music. Impossible to hear each other. Asked to turn it down, they did (a fraction). It was a complete disaster. The tiled floor and open plan, complete with tables rammed in, meant the sound echoed around the space. Deafening. We were all disappointed, embarrassed and grateful to leave. The friends were from Dublin. I don't think they will be recommending the Ivy in their City to anyone. I assume you have a different clientele in mind to us. They were our guests, we paid the bill, but it was the first time I genuinely felt resentful. Our long planned for visit was spoilt and I felt deeply upset.

This restaurant is one of the numerous spin-off branches of the legendary Ivy, which was founded in London's centre in 1917. Like most of the others within the restaurant collection it is decorated in a kind of colourful and plush neo-art deco style. What's special about this location is the fantastic view as the picturesque ruin of Guildford Castle is only a stone's throw away. So far we visited this place twice - for afternoon tea and dinner. The food turned out to be surprisingly good (e.g. duck parfait with hazelnut crunch, chutney & toasted brioche) but I wasn't extremely happy about my thin cocktails (Marlene Dietrich's Glitz/Saffron Negroni) and the bitter, grainly tasting espresso at the very end of the meal. The service on the other hand was cordial and friendly but two of the things we ordered were forgotten on the way to the bar. However a rather adequate choice in the heart of Surrey.

Always a great night at the Ivy. Staff make you feel special from the moment you walk in and nothing is too much trouble. We just had some cocktails and the bar staff were happy to accommodate our preferences. The bar itself was not quite as clean as I would have expected, hence the 4 stars, however we are repeat guests and this blip would not stop us from returning. See you soon, Ivy Castle!

I was not satisfied with my experience at The Ivy Castle view on New Year's Eve. We were a table of four, the three of us did not enjoy the food , as the quality was below average. The price of £75 for a three-course meal seemed quite high considering the lackluster food. Although the scallop starter was decent, the fillet steak was poorly presented, lacking seasoning and flavor. The side of creamy spinach was disappointingly bland, possibly indicating the use of frozen spinach or an overall uninspiring preparation. It was adorned with a few peanuts and bread crumbs, referred to as pangratatto. Surprisingly, despite leaving a significant portion of my main course uneaten and barely touching the side dish, no one inquired about my satisfaction with the meal. My husband had the cheese platter with four pieces of cheese and four crackers, and chutney and some grape. We wouldn’t return, and wouldn’t recommend it.

Excellent atmosphere, very relaxed as expected for Ivy. Great service from staff who are very prompt and direct, really friendly and went out of their way to help us out on our visit. Food came out with minimal wait and was exceptional. It’s really good value too. Cocktails were very nice, would definitely visit again asap. Team all of this up with an exception view of the Guildford castle ruins and it makes for a lovely visit.
