Very tasty food. Prepared quickly and piping hot. Lovely atmosphere. Staff friendly and attentive. Would recommend.

Really lovley beach side restaurant with a full menu. Gluten free cones for the homemade gelato made it a true seaside experience for us

This place has an enormous menu. It cant make up its mind wether its an ice cream parlour, a diner or a cafe. Its none of these. Paid £28 for two full english and a tea and coffee. My wife wanted scrambled eggs on toast but after asking if it could be well cooked was told it was runny?? The breakfast arrived and the hash brown was absolutely soaked through in stale oil. The sausage was awful and bacon undercooked. Worse was the toast had margarine on it. We decided not to have any more drinks and used the toilet before we left. Big mistake. The communal toilet had no blind on the window, had an open bin full of used sanitary towels and was basically filthy. Avoid this place its truly awful. Prime position on the front so they just don’t care. Filth pit. Bad food. Poor service.

just went and had a takeaway from here, i got sausage and chips, savaloy and chips, 2 rolls and 2 cans of drink- it was my son who went in and that came to £20.75. if it were me i would have walked out. chips were ok-ish the sausage was burnt and dry. they forgot to give us the rolls and son had to go back in and they were stale and not edible. you are lucky i had already driven away or i would have come back in and chucked them all back at you, absolute P-Take prices and diabolical food. dont give up your day job for this stint as you wont last long like this.

I went here for a TakeAway haddock and chips. Firstly the woman tried to charge me £18 but after I queried it she lowered it to £12.94 - very odd amount! Foolishly I paid up. Very long wait for food which was very sub standard and inedible. The chips were bitty and the haddock so over cooked it was slightly brown and so crusty you couldn’t separate the fish from the burnt batter. I didn’t return it as it was too far to walk back but I did email them with my comments. They didn’t have the curtesy to reply. Burnt Needless to say I would not recommend this fish and chip restaurant to anyone

We popped in here for fish and chips and it was empty so weren't entirely sure they were open! The service was quick, not especially friendly! The food was delicious , very fresh fish and perfect chips, but I thought expensive, at over £30 for 2 medium cod and chips and 2 cokes!! Would probably try and find somewhere more affordable in future.

I’m gluten intolerance and amazing offering gluten free fish and chips! The fish was yummy but the chips were underdone and greasy. I’ve never had fish and chips since not being able to eat gluten so hit the spot, but wasn’t best I’ve ever had! Saw another review they paid £37 for fish and chips! We paid £22 so no idea what else they had!

Review Makcari’s Fish & Chip Shop, Herne Bay, Kent Early evening and we’d parked the car at the eastern end of Central Parade just passed the point where the double yellow (anti-parking) lines begin/end – in front of the long line of tall and well-preserved period houses set back from the beach; gorgeous images of a classic 19th C seaside town. Check the parking restrictions and - our good fortune that evening - from 18.30 h on (until 09.00 h the next day) parking was free. Hop across the low wall from the road and there’s a wide beach-side walkway above the water with distance views across the Thames estuary. You couldn’t see the Essex coast but, further along towards the centre of town, there was an offshore island of steel trellis work, platform and a small central building that was obviously once part of a pier. It was. A severe storm took our more than half the length of Herne Bay’s Victorian Pier in 1978, thereby isolating the docking port from the remaining landward part of the pier. Read all about it on the wall in the dining room of Makcari’s Fish & Chip shop. The weather was dry, but cool and we were pleased that we’d carried some warm clothing for wandering into town. We passed the fish & chip shop, looked back and then stopped and gave thought to a meal for the evening … what time did the place close? Would it be open on the way back? We could ask - we did. Inside the shop there was a couple fronting the serving counter to the right when you enter, who fielded our questions. Neither were certain of the time of closing – either 20.00 h or 21.00 h they said (and it was already 19.30 h). That helped with a decision … a bird in the hand, so’s to speak. There were about 30 people seated/eating, milling around, ordering and such, in what was a large single dining room effectively split into two – the one half further from the counter a step above the other half. Space for an estimated 100 diners inside, more outside on the pavement. Half-dozen wait staff dressed in black were serving the tables. There was a distinct air of friendliness about the place with many of the diners in groups with the occasional waiter/tress standing over them and sharing in the talking – regulars/people already known? We explored the menu on the wall behind the counter – the usual galaxy of traditional choices (in addition to F&C) with prices to match. Elsewhere the wall was covered with all kinds of novel pictures, photos, more menus and even a bicycle. Why a bicycle? We did not think to ask. There were windows around two sides of the dining room – fronting roads, which provided light and pleasant views across the water. Chose an isolated tables and there's less risk of Covid-19 infection. We did. We ordered half-dozen small pieces of cod and a helping of chips – not realizing that the cod also came with chips – so we had more than we wanted/needed. On the side we had a pot of mushy peas and a pickle onion and shared a Coke between us. It was a great meal – delivered to the table 10-12 minutes after ordering, hot, tasty and delicious. Sure, F&C is, well, F&C but this was in a quintessential seaside F&C restaurant with all the right images – and the food was delicious. Service had been friendly and prompt. Cost? We paid £25.50 for the meal. Our leaving was good too – check out the photo. Also check out the feedback from other TA reviews; the ‘average to terrible’ more than 2x the ‘very good-excellent’ reviews. Why? Both reviews for 2023, for example, come within the former category. Critique focuses upon quality, cost/value & poor services. Sure, we can also lean towards higher cost, but we couldn’t fault either services or quality. The friendliness of the people came across well and we enjoyed the food helped, of course, by the atmosphere of the place. £37 for two cod and chips and 2 colas absolute rip off and the fish and chips was a small portion and not particularly nice. Overpriced and not even that clean in there. Won't set foot in there again. No wonder it was empty in there.

Went today with my Granddaughters, very disappointing . Table we sat down at near entrance was dirty, the bench seat we sat on was ripped. My granddaughters chips were very greasy. I ordered 2 buttered rolls , they turned out to be dry baps, and the mugs of tea were awful. Will not be visiting again , don’t usually use this fish and chip shop unfortunately the one opposite the children’s play area we usually use was shut. Very expensive also. Won’t be visiting again.

Fantastic fish and chips, we were looking for gluten free option and it didn’t disappoint. The fish was very tasty and the batter light and crispy. The service and atmosphere was also lovely. Couldn’t recommend enough! Also a very tasty gelato for dessert.

My partner is gluten and dairy intolerant. She asked about the chips and was assured they are gf and then ordered the curry and chips. When the food was served she doubled checked that that the curry was gf. She was told it wasn't and offered her another meal. My partner then chose gf fish and chips. This was £8 more expensive. No quibble. I offered to pay the difference and asked for my coffee to be re-heated. The manager (Eve I think) insisted this was not necessary as they were as much at fault as we were. They refused to accept my offer of the excess and and provided a new fresh coffee. Wonderful service, We will definitely be going back.

Nice food friendly but pricey for beach cafe , £32 for 2 x cod chips and a small portion mushy peas , lovely but think needs to be a bit cheaper to keep people coming back ,give a free cup tea or do a pensioner special .

Do not visit this restaurant if you want tto be full up when you leave or want value for money. Total rip off....... We had 2 x fish and chips in restaurant for £30. Totally overpriced and not alot on portion size. We also had 2 x Paninis which said come with side salad and nachos. The side salad was the size of a 50pence piece and we had 4 nachos. Will not be returning.

After walking around Herne Bay for a while, my wife and I, together with some friends decided to have a lunch-time fish and chip meal. Our order = Two(2) x Cod and chips + Two (2) x teas = £32.00 It certainly was not the best we had tasted and much of it was left on the plate. Wouldn't be our first choice for a fish and chip meal in Herne Bay.

Stopped for chips following the fireworks and will never go back! I thought it was a bit steep at £4.00 for a large and £3.00 for a medium ( no small), but that's not so much more than other places. However, when I saw the size of the portions I was shocked! Put together they didn't amount to a standard small in every other chip shop in Herne Bay. In fact the medium looked like the same amount of chips in a longer tray. I would've rejected them and refused to pay but my tired children would've been so upset & we had a long walk ahead. To make matter worse they were almost cold and completely tasteless so nothing to redeem them at all and children were disappointment anyway. With so many good chip shops in Herne Bay, luckily I won't ever have to.

After driving through a grey cloudy day we ended up at Herne Bay. Our Fish and Chips meal was Ace ! The fish was very well cooked and pr resented the Chips were well cooked and not greasy at all Every One I our party said how very much they enjoyed their meals. Well done Makcari’s !

£15 Fish and chips disgusting. Chips not cooked and fish was cold. No one in the shop interested. This on top of the fact that the toilets were dirty and no soap.

Food reasonably good and sufficient quantity but very expensive compared to others within 1 mile. I would not recommend them to my friends.

A very clean and large restaurant with a huge variety on its menu. Staff were friendly and efficient, food was (in my opinion) slightly over cooked, whitebait and cod too. Very big portions however. I would assume we may have come in a day in...

Visited just to try the Knickerbocker Glory and it was lovely. A little expensive at £8 but it was full of different fruits,melon blueberries,strawberries,cherries and lovely strawberry ice cream. Topped with spray cream,a little disappointing,but that's the norm these days.

We’ve eaten takeaway fish and chips and eaten them on the beach many times and always enjoyed them. We stopped by one Sunday evening to do the same whilst we were camping up the road at Hampton Bay Campsite. We were quite disappointed. It didn’t seem as tasty before and quite a bit more expensive than last year. Will go elsewhere when in area next time

A group of us went for a quick walk in Herne Bay after being at a pool party and decided to get fish and chips for the kids and everybody. We were firstly disgusted at how expensive it was so decided we should just get the kids something I ordered a few portions of chips and a couple of battered sausages. After paying £12 yes £12 it came and was wrong I got plain sausages and undercooked chips. You couldn’t make it up the girls behind the counter looked like a colouring book with their drawn on eyes and all we got was a blank look and they started serving the next customer. We got outside and just threw it in the bin and went somewhere else. I didn’t want it spoiling the kids day I lost £12 they gained it but a review can mean everything so I hope people see this and avoid as it’s just a rip off, bottle of water was £2 slush puppie £4 it’s just free comedy.

Have used this restaurant for fish & chips over many years and previously found it reasonably good.However, lunch this week (first time for a while) was a great disappointment for the following reasons (this review concerns only fish & chips):a) Fish & chips were served on cheap looking metal 'trays' (rather than plates) which, to varying degrees, were bowed such that they didn't sit flat on the table. Consequently, as the meal was eaten the tray tended to spin around, needing packing beneath to keep it still.b) The food was placed on a paper liner on the tray which began to disintegrate before the meal was finished, pieces being stuck to the food and eaten if not first scraped off.c) The cod was a reasonable size but the batter nowhere near crispy; the chips mediocre.d) I can only surmise that much of the above is thought by the proprietors to make its offerings appear more upmarket and justify the premium, and excessive, prices.e) The establishment is clean and airy, but lacks any character. It is unlikely that Makcari's will remain our first choice for fish & chips.

Visited today with a group of 20 girl guides. Food and restaurant were great, great service and very friendly and helpful. Food was quick to come out and great quality. Good variety of choice and catered well for allergies. Amazing time and and all girls say a massive thank you for the free ice cream

So after a nice walk along the front with my boy i looked in a few fish and chip shops they was packed but makcaris was empty so thought i would give it a go after ordering a medium cod and chips and one mushy peas two bottles of water the bill come to near enough £15 !! For one fish and chips ! I was more disgusted at a bottle of water for £1.60 .

Decided on a fish and chip lunch whilst out for the day and noticed this nice looking restaurant on the sea front. Was enjoying our meals when to our surprise three different couples entered with their dogs, one of which I thought was particularly smelly. Fortunately we had almost finished our food but decided not to stay for desserts. Challenged a member of staff on way out to be advised they had been allowing dogs inside since 1931. Confirmed I will definitely not be returning as plenty of others in the area which is a shame because the fish was delicious

On entering the restaurant our first impression was that the place wasn’t very inviting and really not very sharp, we did sit and look at the menu but I wasn’t at all comfortable with the place and we left without ordering, we then went to a competitor and I must say I’m glad we did, we had a nice meal in much nicer surroundings.

Had a walk along the prom, thought we will try some local fish & chips, went into the above restaurant, ordered, food turned up, just fish and chips for £11.00 per portion, not impressed as the fish was translucent in the middle and the chips were hard and half cooked, quite expensive for 2 meals which were of very poor quality.

We came here on the strength of their advertising gluten free fish and chips and they didn't have it. Had to go elsewhere. We had already opened our drinks so had to stay for that. You'd think they might have offered to comp the drinks in apology, but no such luck. Last visit here.

We went into this restaurant we ordered kids cod bites and chips 2 tuna panini with chips and a coke £23.50 was very expensive. When the food arrived the chips were cold the panini bread was cooked with cold tuna inside and loads/lumps of butter which isn’t to our taste the kids meal was adult size.... wasn’t happy atall with the food for the amount of money they were charging. Will never be going back there can get fish and chips for over half the price and actually hot elsewhere...

25 minute wait -fairly quiet restaurant - cod and chips - cod overcooked - batter hard and fish inside mushy. Chips were hard and tasteless. Being diabetic and having taken medicine , we did eat the food. Wasn't after a refund - but told the chef and he just shrugged his shoulders.Said perhaps something wrong with his batter mix. If you want to sit and wait for a tasteless meal prepared with little care - this is the place for you.

Stopped for a late lunch and sat outside with the dog. Staff friendly and helpful. Service good. The haddock was wonderful. Beautifully fresh and cooked to perfection. Batter thin and crisp. Ages since I had such good fish. Chips were plentiful, but need to be twice fried to crisp them up. Do this and this would be five stars.

we had food from fish and chip shop here , my pie had mould inside and the chips were hard they obviously needed to change there oil and the men serving were very rude

The food was just average the prices on the menu were just ok staff was rude not a very clean restaurant if you want to use the toilet you will have to queue up because it’s only a unisex toilet

Came here with my brother, sister and nieces after a long day of exploring the coast and fossil hunting. We are starved and decided to give this place a go and boy were we in for a treat. We all ordered fish and chips, which was such a massive portion size. You don’t see that these days especially where I’m from in London. The staff were very friendly. The toilets were ok but could be better. We then had coffee and ice creams, both of which certainly did not disappoint. Overall, this was an absolute gem of a place with authentic British fish and chips with an Italian twist, which all adds to the history of Kent.

Very poor services. Ordered two portions of chips stood in front of them waiting ten minutes later started to serve the people behind us even though we ordered before them. Very rude about it. Expect more from them

I have eaten fish and chips at Macaris and it was nicely cooked, fresh but it is a bit pricey in comparison to its competitors

Came in today and ordered an ice cream from the impressive array of flavours. We sat down to enjoy it was my daughter and I. However our experience was spoilt by the people on the next table. Their dogs kept barking at everyone. When my daughter came round the table to me one of the women accused me of letting her get down to the dogs. This was not the case. The lady was rude and aggressive and didn't even apologise for the dogs behaviour. If dogs don't like children they shouldn't be taken to an ice cream parlour because children like ice cream. A shame as it spoilt our visit and we will not be returning until dogs are no longer allowed and I shall tell other mothers not to take their children either.

A visit to the seaside is never the same without Fish and Chips..the food was good..fairly priced for what you get..service friendly..

Fish is fresh , It’s not your typical restaurant it’s more like a diner or a wimpy. Soups are good too and the bread is crisp and warm and buttered .lovely see vieuw and not to expensive , Will be back .

Rock era pequeño, maloliente y huesos, scampy era como que salió de una bolsa de congelados de Lidl. Venía con una taza de guisantes blandos, pero que era una porción cucharita. Pedí un escabeche de cebolla, que me esperaba una gran cosa en mi viejo como local "fish and chips", pero fue una pequeña de un frasco del tamaño de un 10 p, cortados en 4 y costo 60 p.

Good service and nice food. It isn't the cheapest but after a few experiences with miserable staff in some of the other food options in the area, I would rather buy my fish and chips from here.

Had a family breakfast here this morning. The English breakfast and fruit pancakes were very poor. Cheap food done badly and well overpriced. The milkshake was good but I would never eat there again. Due to a strawberry allergy we requested no strawberries on the pancake and they came with strawberry. When we pointed it out, they took the plate, went out the back for 5 mins and just took them off the plate. We spotted it before anything major happened and they were not happy to sort it out. Very poor service.

Second visit to this restaurant as they do gluten free fish & chips. Excellent food, cod nice, white & fluffy and the batter light,crispy & not greasy. Non gluten free cod was also the same. Cod came with proper chip shop chips & mushy peas.

There are several outlets in Herne Bay, this chain appears to have the monopoly on the sea front. We went and sat in the one on the corner.The first thing we noticed was that there was no indication as to whether we should sit down or go to the counter, even though there were a lot of staff and the cafe wasn't that busy. Secondly, the staff had limited English and limited service skills. They were quite rude and slow and we both felt that if they didn't want to be there, then why be? This is not a good thing for staff in a holiday town!Thirdly, The menu was quite extensive but very pricey. For instance, sandwiches 5.95, fish and chips 9.99 and an ice cream sundae 7.95..... ridiculous!Overall, this is not really a place to take the family, with the pricey eats and poor service.....a sad enditement of the decline of the seaside town in Britain and an unhealthy reminder of what we can expect for the future. Staff need training and pricing needs to be reviewed

Came here as they do gluten free food which is good. Not a bad selection and service is quick.Quite hard to get the order across to the staff and part of the order was missed. However after notifying the staff this got rectified quickly.Good portions and not bad tasting.

Makcari's is a lovely dog friendly cafe, situated on the corner of the seafront. It's called a Fish and Chip Shop but they also do variety of other dishes from sandwiches, and jacket potatoes to a roast dinner available 7 days a week. I've nearly eaten every dish on the menu and have never had a bad meal. This cafe is very dog friendly, I go in with my 6 dogs on a regular basis.They also serve ice cream sundae's made with their own Italian ice cream it's delicious, plus you definitely need to try their waffles and pancakes with fresh fruit and ice cream....Their is only one complaint that I have is their toilets. You need to go upstairs to get to them. These stairs are steep and anybody disabled or unsteady on their feet won't be able to use them. But the good news is 5 minutes walk away are a block of public toilets which also have disabled facilities.

I have been to this restaurant many times and had never been disappointed until today I ordered haddock with chips and it was disgusting the fish was slimy and watery and the fish didn't looked cooked. I did say to a member of staff as he cleared the plates that I wasn't happy with my fish he just shrugged his shoulders and what is it with the staff that think it is appropriate to chew chewing gum In a food establishment. It is such a shame as it is a lovely restaurant but obviously they are not interested in their customers

My husband and I both had a large cod and it was fantastic! We really weren’t expecting it to be that nice but we were totally shocked. It was piping hot, fresh, crispy and really really tasty. Both of us said this is the best chippy fish we have ever had!

Friendly service a good place to rest from walking plenty of choice for lunch or afternoon tea. Ice cream is a must do many different flavours.

My family chose to go here,as it looked very clean and we had eaten here before, and was very impressed. The food was excellent and worth the wait. The cod tasted fresh and not greasy. The chips were also cooked very well and we struggled to finish them. The staff were efficient and polite. The toilets were clean and tidy. Many thanks we will visit again !!!

Brought fish and chips that were supposed to be freshly cooked. Chips were warmed up and one piece of fish was the size of a child's portion. Tasted ok but will not be returning as very overpriced.

We called for a breakfast sandwich and a coffee, and we weren't dissapointed. This dog friendly place had great coffee and a really nice sandwich, to go with good staff. We sat outside across from the beach and just enjoyed a nice relaxing place with good food, perfect morning.

We have seen that Makcari's now advertise Gluten free fish and chips, so after the Herne Bay carnival tonight we popped in for a takeout to sit on the beach and we were very impressed by the knowledge of the staff, they even told us the have gluten free ice creams and conesgluten free cheesy chips were very nice and we will certainly eat from Makcari's againThank you

We were on our tour of Kent when locals recommended we come here.Served by friendly staff,the fish and chips were piping hot and delicious and the portion size was fine.What more does a seaside resort need?Well,Italian ice cream and,yes,they had that too!!

I could smell the vinegar from the seafront which led me to Makcari's Fish & Chip shop. I wasn't disappointed as the chips were superb.

Really really wanted to leave a review of mushy peas. Went their for lunch today and were looked after by Becca and Mitad (hope I remembered the right spelling) . They made us v welcome and the food was amazing . all prepared fresh, huge portions , including beautifully crunchy batter on fish and a lovely dressed salad with it too. Exceptionally good value in plush individual little booths and very clean and comfortable . Well done xxxx. PS WiFi would be the only thing you could add to improve this .

This restaurant seems to have been around for decades as I remember it as a child. Now licensed to sell alcohol to enjoy with your meal or snack. Worth a visit.

Friendly service, loadsa seats, right on the front, lovely and warm, and I can recommend the cheesy chips, if you like big portions of proper chips and loadsa cheese.

I've given this place a couple of visits and each time we've been underwhelmed. ... small portions overpriced even my 7 year old turned up his nose at the thing that was supposed to be a sausage.... won't be going back in the future

Don't be put off by the interior decor - these were some of the best fish and chips we've ever had! Huge portion of haddock, perfect chips and mushy peas thrown in for under a tenner each.

Last year in Herne Bay we had fish and chips in Makcari's in the wonderful old bandstand. Two boxes of average food were walked through the doors, obviously from their other cafe and thrown at us. We'd previously had a below average, overly priced for what we received, breakfast there. Gluttons for punishment!! Anyway, for some misplaced reason we last week decided to call in to their cafe at the end of William St. I had the worst omelette I have ever had anywhere. Absolutely disgusting. An omelette is such a basic thing I didn't expect anyone could make one so badly. My husband had fish and chips. The fish looked, on the outside at least, old, overcooked and unappetising. The cook/fryer/chef, whatever he thinks he is, looked miserable and the rest of the staff are just as charmless. It is also over priced. So very very sad. In the days when the Macari family (no K in the middle) owned this place it was superb. Go to Wetherspoons or anywhere else in Herne Bay. Give this place a miss.

The fish and chips were awful worst I have had in years. We only went as Neptunes was closed. The problem here is they are trying to be many things. Ice cream bar come chippy come carvery. As a result quality poor and overpriced.Service was with a snarl and disorganised. It felt like the place was on its last legs moral low hence the appearance of no one giving a damn.

Ice cream is as good as we remember as children in the 60's and they still have the same ice cream sundae dishes

We have used this restaurant several times and have always enjoyed our meals. We took family there this week and they were very pleased with their choices. My piece of plaice was delicious and perfectly cooked - two others had cod and one chose haddock.The chips were just right both in quantity and flavour - all together a good meal. The price is acceptable for the quality offered.

First visit here for Sunday lunch.Very wide selection of dishes offered and efficiently run, ordering food in advance at counter and then served at table.Waited about 20 minutes for food to be served, but it was a busy hot Sunday lunch time, so to be expected, and hopefully was freshly cooked.Not the best fish and chips in Herne Bay, and certainly not the cheapest !The restaurant is kept very clean and free Wi Fi is available.Plenty of seating, even at busy times and prime location on the seafront.

We visited today for a quick lunch to takeaway and eat on the beach. Really good chips clearly fried in nice fresh oil. Really pleasing food
