We visited Maison Bleue in September for our wedding anniversary meal. The restaurant is quite unassuming from outside, we almost walked past. The inside of the restaurant is warm and inviting. The service during our dining was very good and attentive. The food was delicious! Definitely on the pricier side but worth it! 👍🏻

We have been going here for 5 years and in our opinion this is the best restaurant in Bury St Edmunds. The menu is a delightful mix of the most delicious food. The service is immaculate. There is a fabulous wine list too. This is our favourite local restaurant for a special occasion. You won’t be disappointed.

From the amuse bouche to the petit fours, the meal was a joy. Tempting flavours and textures, all sort of cleverness but not overly fussy, good service with humour and attention, and a lovely Chilean red wine to go with it all. Just what you want as a memory to take home!

This is very nice restaurant. Excellent service. Great food and fair wine list. The portions are small - but that suited us - and leaves room for the excellent deserts and outstanding cheese selection. Very french! Just nothing to complain about.

We attended the wine tasting/dinner evening. Sometimes these wine evenings can be focused too much on the wine details but this event was good fun. The cost was great value and Kate, the host for the evening, was perfect. Kate ensured the evening flowed with just the right combination of being there for everyone but not intrusively so. Allesandro, the representative for Donnafugata wines, gave a short introduction to the winery and its history, followed by explanations, before tasting each of the 5 wines. Friendly and informative without being too serious. The food and ambience were, as always, superb. The staff take their work very seriously and it’s puzzling why this restaurant hasn’t received a Michelin star. Bury St Edmunds is the restaurant capital of Suffolk and the Maison Bleu stands out as one of the very best. We always appreciate the linen tablecloths on the tables which is rare these days. Overall a great evening and look forward to the next event.

As regular readers will know, we are also regular readers: regular readers of the Maison Bleue menu. We love this place and have watched with fascination its evolution over almost thirty years. Once it was a simple fish restaurant. Now it creates beautiful, ambitious but unpretentious dishes that have made the town of Bury St Edmunds say wow for a generation. Other restaurants have come and gone. But Maison Bleue remains the go-to place for lovers of wonderful food and excellent but unfussy service. We were there for a special celebratory lunch last week. Lots of others were there too for special occasions. But - in truth - the special occasion with Maison Bleue is just stepping out of the frenzy of everyday life, pausing, breathing, and knowing that being here is a special occasion.

Fantastic restaurant. we were extremely well looked after from the moment we arrived to minute we left. The food itself was outstanding. We experienced the gourmet menu and whilst there were one or two minor items that weren't for me (the restaurant cannot be blamed for my tastebuds). The food was delicious. Personal favourites of the evening and highly recommended would be the ox cheek ravioli and the chocolate soufflé, they were superb. Hospitality was also second to none.

Maison Bleue has consistently hits the spot during the several years we have ben eating there. Excellent meal, wine and service. The option to have single glasses of top end wines is a big plus for me as can try 125ml of two or three wines v single bottle of one. Good for intimate meals for two and larger parties, up to say 8.

My partner and I had been recommended to visit by family for a while and so for our 12th anniversary we booked online to visit. When booking online I mentioned that I have a gluten allergy, that it was our 12 year anniversary and asked about dress code. We were not advised about any dress code and receive no confirmation that gluten free could be provided as requested in the booking so we turned up hoping for the best, we dressed smart casual and this was fine. My partner and I have dined in many Michelin star establishments all around the world and admittedly there were times when Maison Bleue felt very close on our visit, but on this occasion, for the money that we spent we felt that there was no wow factor for us and that we wouldn’t return, for more detail read below. On arrival, we were promptly seen to and quickly seated. We were asked if we wanted aperitifs before we’d even had a chance to open the menu, which felt a little rushed. We asked for a few moments to look at our options, and I advised the waiter that I needed to eat gluten free as I have coeliac and I was told that they would check with the kitchen what my options were. Whilst I understand that good establishments have changing seasonal menus, I personally prefer to see what options are suitable to be written down than having to wait for confirmation, and then remember. It turns into a game of whispers between the kitchen and the guest. When the waiter returned I was advised that all starters, all mains and all but one desert on the gourmet menu were either gluten free or could be made gluten free. This was good news. At this time we then also both ordered a glass of wine each. Each costing £15 a glass, whilst the wines were nice, they weren’t outstanding for the price and felt that for the £30 spent we could have brought a nicer bottle. Soon after, we were approached by another member of staff to order. We were not told how the dining worked and there was nothing in the menu explaining, so we ordered all courses at once. After ordering it was not long till we were brought some bread and butter. My partner had three different types of bread and I was given two lightly toasted slices of gluten free bread that was clearly manufactured out of house. There was only one butter provided so I cut it in half and set some aside for my gluten free bread to prevent cross contamination. My partner enjoyed their bread, particularly the muffin shaped bread which had a cheesy taste. Whilst my gluten free bread was no different to what I could get from any supermarket, however I appreciate that I got something rather than nothing. I have however been to other fine dining establishments that went to the effort to bake gluten free bread in house which have been outstanding. After finishing our bread a small dish arrived with two different morsels each. One was a potato based disc of food, that tasted like elements of a roast dinner and was okay, I was expecting it to be warm but it was rather cold and it being potato I found that slightly off putting. The other was a beetroot foam, neither of us much enjoyed this one. My partners beetroot foam was served in a pastry case, mine was adapted to be served in a glass rather than a pastry case but all were served on the same plate. After finishing the beetroot and potato elements it again was not too long till our starters arrived. My partner opted for paying a supplementary £5 for the crab. Unfortunately they didn’t realise that the soya gel mentioned on the menu would be a jelly on the dish and my partner HATES jelly textures and as such, so as not to be rude, literally gagged their way through trying to eat the course. This is purely a preference of course but wasn’t ideal and probably impacted their enjoyment of the following courses. I opted for the mussels to start and sadly a number of mouthfuls were gritty, which is not what I would expect at this level of dining, I have been to high street chains that serve mussels and not been served gritty mussel, something to be careful of. In addition, I tend to opt for meat or shellfish as I am not a fan of fish, and at times the dish was also rather fishy, I think it may have been the foam over the top, so I also didn’t overly enjoy the starter, which again, may have affected my overall enjoyment of the meal. Happily, the starters for both of us were probably what we enjoyed least on our visit, The next course, the main, we both opted for the venison and also ordered two side dishes at £4.75 each. The side dishes ordered were buttered potatoes and green beans and courgettes. The main, whilst cooked very nicely, lacked a touch of seasoning for my partner and my own preference. When there are no condiments or salt or pepper on the table for the customer to adjust to their tastes you have to ensure that the seasoning is spot on, unfortunately it wasn’t,some sea salt across the top of the venison was really needed and overall the main lacked the wow factor. However, the buttered potatoes and the green beans were absolutely delicious. Very nicely seasoned and the most enjoyable of all the savoury items that we had on our visit. Though, one side dish for two is probably enough, as we struggled to finish both as well as our main courses. Our plates were then taken and there was quite a wait for anything else. In the time between finishing our main, we finished our sparking water and our wines and sat a long time waiting for someone to ask if we wanted anything, in the end I attempted to and then struggled to get the attention of the waiting staff. I believe because the restaurant was now full and each table was now at some stage through their meals that the staff then were not as attentive as when we first arrived. Eventually I got the attention of a member of staff with an “excuse me” as they tried to rush past us. I ordered a Japanese whiskey on the rocks, however I received a Japanese whisky on its own with no ice. Shame. When staff begin to rush, attention to detail drops. However, the whisky was delicious. I was surprised there was no palette cleanser before the dessert arrived however the desert was by far my favourite course. I opted for the crème brûlée which I did very much enjoy and would happily buy on its own to eat at home regularly, it was delicious. My partner had an apple based desert and again was a little underwhelmed. By this stage we were probably ready to leave and were waiting for the bill to arrive and was surprised to be served some sweet treats of some jelly, which my partner skipped, some nougat which was very nice and a salted caramel chocolate which was nice. However, we’d got through all our drinks by this stage and had been in the restaurant for two hours and were keen to get finished and get home, it would have been nice perhaps to have had the option to receive these in a little box with the bill to take and enjoy at home as a snack later on in the evening. Soon after receiving these sweet treats we requested the bill. The total for two, with two wines, a bottle of sparking water, one whiskey, the supplement for the crab, the two side dishes and a 10% tip was £203.70. Given the “extras” and supplementary charges the bill can quickly add up. Given the quality of the food we received, and how many were not to our taste or, simply lacked that wow factor, for us we did not feel it was value for money. Additionally, whilst I did not have any full blown reaction, I did have an upset stomach, I assume due to some cross contamination and was up at 1am with stomach cramps and needing the bathroom, a sure sign that I’ve ingested too much gluten. Whilst this is a risk in any establishment, I have eaten at many fine dining venues and many other places in Bury St Edmunds and had no ill effects, so if you do have a gluten allergy or coeliac, be very cautious. Overall, the service is good, but not exceptional and I was surprised that having booked specifying an anniversary that there was no mention, congratulations or anything done as a result. Others were celebrating birthdays and the gentleman next to us was celebrating a 60th and again, they mentioned how they were surprised there was nothing done in conversation to each other and when then mentioning it to a member of staff all they were offered was for a waitress to take a photo for them. The food is okay, but not exceptional, a number of dishes were not to our taste and those that were lacked seasoning. The cost however, is exceptional. In summary, for the price, the experience and that I reacted to consuming gluten, as things are today, we would not recommend and we would not return.

This was our second visit to Maison Bleu. We chose dishes from the Gourmet menu. I had the Mussels with leeks, Angus beef for main and a Mango Millefeuille for dessert. Our first visit was brilliant. We both thought that our experience this second time wasn't as good as the previous visit. The Dishes didn't have as much seasoning and I was very disappointed with the dessert as parts of the caramel were burnt and made the dish very bitter. I did politely mention this to the owner and the gentleman said that the caramel was supposed to taste bitter. This I do not agree, you can see in the photo the colour of it looks burnt. The Service from the staff was lovely and polite and good humoured.

Another absolutely delightful meal at La Maison Bleue to celebrate my beautiful wife's birthday. As previously, every morsel of food was a delight to eat and the service was most pleasant and attentive. In our opinion, comfortably the best retaurant in Suffolk, and more or less equal to any of the 1*, 2* or 3* Michelin restaurants at which we have eaten. I read a few poor reviews suggesting that the staff are "snooty"; that was not our experience at all, but they are French, which makes a difference. Vive La France! The only tiny problem that we experienced was the nearby table of 4 persons who were talking in outrageously self-promoting and repulsively pompous terms about all the amazingly important things that they had done and were doing. Being forced to hear their vacuous chatter was enough to make you want to vomit, but the food was far too good for that. I sincerely hope however that they never return.

This remains our favourite restaurant- we don't get there often enough but it never disappoints. Although it is a fine dining restaurant you never feel uncomfortable at all. The staff are efficient and very friendly. The fixed price menus are good although I notice you cannot mix and match now? My celeriac starter was unusual and really tasty. My partner's crab starter was divine. Our main courses of Angus Aberdeen beef was done to my liking and so tender and full of flavour. My partner's cod dish was amazing. We had the lovely sauté potatoes as a side. My dessert of mango and saffron was exquisite while my partner had the apple which is stuffed with a delicious mousse. The breads are beautiful, the amuse bouche amazing and the petit fours round a perfect meal off with a sweet treat! The wine list is extensive but there are reasonably priced bottles of wine as well as more top of the range selections. Not a meal out but a truely wonder dining experience - thank you!

Well... I was highly recommended this Bury St Edmunds restaurant and I have to say I was disappointed !! Whilst the food on the set menu was just OK it was, for my taste , grossly over salted !! As for the service a couple at a table close to mine had to wait over 12 minutes for their used plates to be removed, I also experienced the same sort of service. But when the staff did attend they were very friendly and efficient. For a restaurant that charged me over £ 100 for my dinner and a bottle of wine (£29) I wasn't impressed.

Yes, we're back at MAISON BLEUE, this time because we wanted somewhere special but not stuffy for a special lunch. And that's just what we had. The menus continue to surprise and delight; the service remains attentive and friendly. Tables at the front of the restaurant have a more informal feel; in the other rooms with their crisp white tablecloths there's more of the classic French restaurant feel. But wherever you choose to sit, the food here is the star of the show - beautifully balanced flavours, elegant presentation, amazing flavours. Karine, Pascal and the team run a tight ship. They've been feeding West Suffolk with remarkable food for more than a generation. And, as we saw again at lunchtime service today, the restaurant was buzzing with diners old and new, all here for that very special MAISON BLEUE experience.

Noted that Covid hygiene was fully in place. The service was impeccable - friendly and professional - and each of our 3 courses was a mouth watering treat......the best restaurant food anywhere this year . Wines by the glass were top class and a great complement to the very tasty dishes. There was a lovely ambience and for us the whole experience was a truly memorable occasion. We are lucky to have such a fine establishment in Suffolk , and will certainly return.

Great food, wine, service and ambience. Staff welcoming and knowledgable. More than happy to help with wine pairings for the food we ordered. Service was on point and not fussy. All 3 courses, bread and amuse bouches were wonderful. Thoroughly recommend Maison Bleue.

That Maison Bleue doesn't have a Michelin star says more about the idiosyncracies of their inspectors than the quality of the food. Simply put, the food - in fact, the whole experience - is exceptional. The entry in the guide describes the cooking as "classical", but it's way more than that, with subtle but unexpected combinations of flavours and textures and a refreshingly sensitive way of presenting vegetarian dishes that avoid non-meat eaters from feeling short-changed. The prix fixe menu is also excellent value at £37.50 for three courses plus amuse bouche and petits fours. Service is spot on too with tables that are just the right distance from each other. A place to return to time and again.

Thank you for a wonderful, wonderful lunch for my birthday.I started with a wonderfully imaginative creation around a tapenade base, followed by pork and a pear dessert. This doesn't do any justice to the technical expertise and finesse shown in preparation and delivery, and service was stylish, prompt and with genuine warmth. This is such a special place-our next birthday isn't until February, but I'm sure we'll be back well before then.

Wonderful experience from start to finish We’ve eaten at Maison Bleue many times and get on so well with the team but every experience is unbeatable! We chose Maison Bleue for our date night after lockdown to celebrate our engagement (just before Covid hit!). It’s fair to say, it absolutely did not disappoint. Such an attraction in Bury and worth every single penny

Despite Covid19 precautions our visit was relaxed. As usual the food was of the highest quality and perfectly cooked with enough unusual flavour to make every mouthful a taste treat. One of our group ordered vegetarian starter and main and was immediately asked "Are you vegetarian, I can tell you which desserts contain animal products".Service was unobtrusive but impeccable. We will definitely return.

Everything you would expect from a top class restaurant. Naturally, the food was superb, from the amuse-bouches to the final treats. The service was not so stiffly formal as in some top places, and there was a little more space than usual, which was welcome. Do yourself a favour and treat yourself at the next anniversary, birthday, or just because you deserve a treat apres-lockdown :)

We plumped for the £55 a head menu as I fancied lamb. There is also one that costs £33. Started with bread which was lovely. Chefs treat was fabulous. To start I had a tart with mushrooms and runny egg which was lovely, my husband had pasta which was light and flavoursome. My main of lamb was tender and tasty and my husband said his halibut was amazing. We had a side of saute potatoes as we know they are always delicious. My husband's apple dessert was superb and I loved my raspberry meringue one. The wine list is extensive and priced from about £28 upwards. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and efficient without rushing you at any time.We really enjoyed a wonderful lunch experience.Thank you

Our favourite restaurant on the planet. From the moment you walk through the door the experience is amazing. Karine and her front of house team know exactly how to treat a customer and just make you feel special. Pascal and his team produce the quality of food that just makes you want to go back for more. The menu never disappoints. Our latest meal in a Covid 19 secure environment where Karine and Pascal had thought of everything was perfect. There was a choice from two 3 course menus that cater for every taste and you can just take the whole evening at your own pace. It really is a very special place to eat!

We have had 2 meals at this restaurant in the last 2 weeks, a dinner and then a lunch both to celebrate birthdays. We normally eat here 5-6 times each year, so know what to expect under normal circumstances. The adaptations the owners have made to conform with COVID restrictions are excellent: you wouldn't really feel that too much was different. The fixed menu options at 2 price points are both excellent value considering the ingredients involved, and presented to the normal highest standards. The quality of service was, as always, exemplary. This restaurant has shown what can be achieved under such restrictions and puts some of the others in the local area to shame. Well done!

Ate this evening with my family at Maison Bleue. We’ve been before and loved it, and tonight was no exception. It was however my first time eating there as a vegetarian, so I was wondering whether the experience would be diminished at all by that.Obviously, being vegetarian, there was less choice. An impressive 3/6 starters were vegetarian, but only one main option on the £36.50 menu, and no vegetarian option on the more expensive menu. The celeriac lasagne was not quite to my taste. Nothing wrong with it as such, just not for me, and certainly nothing to complain about. The main, which was a risotto, was absolutely delicious! Both by 9yo and partner both had the beef, and said how delicious it was. The potato purée side was absolutely Moreish and buttery. Perfect.Dessert and petit fours was, as ever, delicious. The service was attentive, despite COVID measures being in place.Thank you Maison Bleue for another fabulous evening out! 5 stars well deserved.

We visited for a birthday family meal, decor was reasonably nice but not amazing. Staff were well trained and pleasant. Unfortunately all three courses were tiny in size and more disappointingly completely lacking in any flavour. We were surprised at previous reviews as we left hungry and unimpressed. For the cost this should have been much better as we felt it was a complete waste of money and will definitely not be returning.

I booked this restaurant to belatedly celebrate my wife's birthday, and we were not disappointed. The overall experience, from the initial reservation, communication pre visit, welcome on arrival, quality of food and service level, were all of an exceptional standard. This restaurant sets high standards that many others could not achieve, and they do it effortlessly. Hygiene was at a very high level post lockdown, face coverings are required when you walk through the restaurant, and the staff wear face shields throughout service . This is a place where you can feel safe given the current situation. Dress code is smart. There were no children in the restaurant during our visit for dinner at 7pm until 9.15pm, you may wish to check their policy on children dining before booking. Toilets were clean and presentable, high standard of hygiene. As you walk through the restaurant you can see into the kitchen through glass. This establishment has nothing to hide. Price was £55.00 per person for a three course menu, fine dining standard. Wine starts at around £20.00 a bottle. Good value overall. Highly recommend and will visit agin.

I’m grateful I made the mental note to try this place while I’m still in Bury and the women who work there were so so so chatty and genuine nice people. I went in with no idea what to have, I’m often very picky but today I told them I was leaning towards their cajun chicken and that they could choose the rest! They offered up the best additions, even suggested I get it in a wrap and I was all for it. Totally inexpensive as well, so affordable and I think this is the true selling point for Hatters Sandwich Bar, other than their delicious fresh ingredients of course. Pop in for breakfast or lunch and you’ll be sorted right out :)) I WILL be back to try more variations!!!

We tried this place for the first time a few months back and really enjoyed the food. So much so we said this can be our takeaway spot when we fancy something because we are finding it really hard to find nice takeaway places near us. We visited again and didn't enjoy the food. The cod was very greasy, and I'm not sure what oil it was cooked it but it was actually quite horrible. It gave the food a tinted orange colour. The chips weren't the best either. We let it slide, and said maybe they had to change things. We tried again recently and it was the same again. Very greasy, orangey looking coloured battered fish, chips didn't seem the freshest. The fish is always stuck to the paper too and ends up very wet and soggy, so I feel like you end up losing some of the batter. The fish hasn't seemed fresh, white, fluffy and nicely battered like the first time we tried them. I disliked it so much compared to the first time we tried it that I said I never want to eat from here again unfortunately. The service is brilliant. That I can't fault.
